What's (in) a module?

Two maybe related questions: 1. What constitutes a module? I wrote a couple of definitions and put them in a file t-foo.tex. When I write "\input t-foo" in the preamble of my document, everything works fine (so the file is found by TeX). When I say \usemodule[t-foo] or \usemodule[foo], I get "system : no macros found in module foo" and, obviously, "undefined control sequence." So: is there any special form for a module? I'm very curious because I defined a set of similar macros in another module, and everything works fine. 2. Is it possible to use a certain encoding file, enco-bar.tex, for parts of a file only? Could one define a macro (in a module???) that would do something like \switchtoencoding[bar] and switch back to the file's default encoding afterwards? Thanks to all, best Thomas

critical editions in context

Sorry if this is a double post; I sent this message on Friday, and I think it somehow got lost. In March/April 2002, Hans and Idris had an interesting exchange about the topic "critical editions in context" here in ntg-context; the main question was whether the functionality of edmac could be implemented in context. I'd be curious to know whether anything came out of it, I couldn't find any follow-up. Best Thomas

book on context?

Is there actually a hard-copy book for ConTeXt? I am using the PDF, 300+ page manual, and it is rather difficult to continually navigate wtih a PDF viewer. I know I could print out the PDF document, but by the time I figure in toner cost and paper cost and the cost to bind it at a local shop, it would be worth it for me to buy a book. Moving to ConTeXt

I am (again) considering moving to ConTeXt. A few years ago I investigated the move because I have apositive impression of the quality of the ConTeXt project and because I find the standard LaTeX layouts ugly. At that time I decided against it because the first thing I tried (a list within a list) did not work and because I was under the impression that I would have to do alot of layout myself (and I have TeX for that, right?). I am thinking of using LaTeX and the memoir class. Anyway, I am still tempted. So I am investigating again. I would like to know if (and how) I can do the following in ConTeXt. I did read the manual before writing this: - Project structure for a book, chapters to be in separate files. Chapters to be processed individually when required, or better: chapter + index/toc/appendices, etc. How do you do that? I do not understand the manual here entirely and my test from a few years ago failed. - lettrine.sty (I have my own TeX code now, but lettrine is probably better) - Page layout as in a book (no whitespace between pars and indentation). Good readable. - mfpic or another way to program drawings (vectors/functions) - microtype.sty (protrusion,probably no stretching) - Optional paragraph (not line) numbering, suppressable (as in some philosophy books) - 2 output options: - Final: Large paperback size (somewhat larger than pocket) pages centered on A4 portrait paper - Draft: Two of those pages,slightly shrunk on A4 landscape paper. No fancy ordering, just page 0-1, 2-3, 4-5, etc. So, how do I do these things? I would like to try to recode a part ofmy book-project in ConTeXt to see if it works for me. Thanks, G

Initial Font Installation Question (Mac)

Greetings all, I've been having a lot of fun struggling with the installation of a newly purchased font, and wanted to double check a preliminary question before I give in and ask a more thorough question ;) I'm working with Mac OS X, so I bought a font-set with both Mac TTF and Postscript files. The Postscript folders have 2 types of file for each fontname: .afm and another without a suffix. The names also have uppercase letters, such as AndulBooBol (a.k.a. Andulka Book Bold). For the texfont script, it apparently needs the .afm files and .pfb files. Thus: 1) Are these non-suffixed files the .pfb files in question? If so, should I rename (add .pfb to) them before trying to install them? (I could convert the TTF files to .pfb?) 2) Should I take away the UpperCaseLettering as well? Rename them to something more Berry-like? In fact, I've tried these things with no success, but before I spell out the details of my failure I thought I would get this straight. some bib module questions

Folks, I am new beginner and have some rookie questions about using the bib module. 1. \setupcite[number][left=[, right=]] did not work. the citation still shows up in the text like (author, year) 2. either \completepublications or \placepublications wont show the publication list at the end of the paper without using \setup[pubs][criterium=all]. 3. \setuppublications[numbering=yes] fails to put a number before the publication list at the end of the paper. I got the most updated m-bib.zip from http://texaanhet.net/bib/ and copied those file to my local hard drive at ...\texmf\tex\context\m-bib\. Also I just updated my context to the new released version. By the way, I use pc and WinEdt. I probably made several mistakes. please help. thanks a lot. best, fei

Bad page breaks!

Dear ConTeXt-users, I'm trying to typeset a small book using ConTeXt (TeXLive 2004), and use the following setup: \setupbodyfont[rm,12pt] \definepapersize[BOOK][width=140mm,height=210mm] \setuppapersize[BOOK][A4] \setuplayout[ [topspace=24mm, header=8mm, headerdistance=10mm, backspace=19.5mm, leftmargin=15.5mm, rightmargin=23mm, footerdistance=5mm, footer=4mm, height=fit, width=fit, marking=on, location=middle] Page breaks are usually calculated automatically by TeX, but I notice that in my case they turn out to be very bad. A lot of pages are involved, so I wonder how this can be improved? Sometimes even 3 lines could be added without any difficulty to a page by TeX before inserting a page break! I've tried to use \adaptlayout but it doesn't seem to work, no effect! Has it perhaps something to do with the setup I use? Regards, Geert -- Geert C.H.M. Problem with DocbookInContext

In the last days, I played around with some truetype fonts, preparing them for use with ConTeXt by creating tfms via the texnansi encoding. Some of these truetypes have expert features embedded into their glyphs. texnansi automatically takes care of integrating the "ff," "ffi" and "ffl" ligatures. In order to extract small caps and old-style numerals, I created a modified texnansi encoding.
