Newbie screwed up his installation

Hi, I must have completely screwed up my Context installation--files that typeset OK yesterday now won't compile anymore, even for three-liners, I get this error: ! Hi, Here are some new thingies for pdf freaks: \setupinteraction[state=start] \useattachment[whatever][test.tex] % \setupattachments[\c!symbool={symbol-normal,symbol-down}] \starttext \attachment[whatever] \stoptext This will embed a file and works ok in acrobat <=6. If you have acrobat 6, there is now some rudimentary support for pdf-layering. http://www.pragma-ade.com/temp/pre-dtp.pdf http://www.pragma-ade.com/temp/layers.pdf In acrobat 6, there is a layers tab on the left end of the screen. The pre-dtp file only has layers enabled on the page that talks about layers (fyi, this is the presentation i used for eurotex). Not to be redistributed! ... and of course a new beta, take your most complex document, process it with \showlayoutcomponents, and you'll get access to all text/graphic layers that are in there. Nice for debugging. Runtime graphics

Hi, I run this simple test file test.tex : %&cont-en \setupoutput[pdftex] \runMPgraphicstrue \starttext \startMPrun input graphserieA \stopMPrun \externalfigure[mprun.1] \externalfigure[mprun.2] % \startMPrun input graphserieB \stopMPrun \externalfigure[mprun.1] \externalfigure[mprun.2] \stoptext \end . In the logfile, I got the messages : figures : figureobject test-mprun.1 is reused figures : figureobject test-mprun.2 is reused and twice the figures of graphserieA.mp on test.pdf. Is there a way to avoid the re-use of test-mprun.1 and test-mprun.2, I mean a way to overwrite the files test-mprun.1 and test-mprun.2 ? Or a way to get different names for each metapost output as, for example, graphserieA-mprun.1, graphserieA-mprun.2 and graphserieB-mprun.1, graphserieB-mprun.2 ? I could also give a different number to each of the figures in all of the *.mp files, but this solution is not pacticable since I have plenty of metapost files to process, each of it containing a lot of figures already numbered with almost the same numbers. Moreover, those numbers can not be modified because the figures are elsewhere referenced by their number and by the name of the metapost file. Thanks, --pv

Different behaviour Windows vs. Linux

Hello everybody, When I compile a MyWay (uses s-mag-*.tex) under Windows everything runs smoothly. When I compile the same file under Linux, where I got also a texlive7 tree installed, the \setupencoding[texnansi] is not read from the cont-sys.ini, though the file contains this statement. - As a consequence Context fails because it is looking for ec-uplr8a instead of texnansi-uplr8a. For the time being I edited the s-mag-00.tex and replaced the \usetypescript[palatino][\defaultencoding] by \usetypescript[palatino][texnansi], which solves the hick. Is this a specific Linux issue? Defining your own custom numbered itemization

For a simple manual I would like to setup a sort of customized enumerated list, but I don't see how to do this in ConTeXt. What I would like to do have something like \setupitemize[9][inmargin][before=\itemcolor, inbetween=\stopcolor] \startitemize[9] \item This is step 1. \item Followed by step 2 \stopitemize In which the text is set as a numbered list with the numbers in the margin and set in color to make them stand-out. However I don't want to make this the default of the default numbered list using \startitemize[n]. Anyone know the best way to do this? Regards, Frank

How to set font for units

Hello, How do I setup the font used by the SI-Unit abbreviations. I use something like the following: \usemodule[units] \setupbodyfont[pos,sansserif] \starttext The wavelength of the pulsed Nd:YAG laser is 1.064 \Micro\Meter. \stoptext The bodytext is in Helvetica, but the units are in times. How can I setup ConTeXt to use the sans-serif font for the units as well? Regards, Frank

Hi, I'm a bit stummied. This is not the first font I install, however this one gives problems I do not know how to tackle: Frutiger pfrl8a and pfrb8a After runnig texfont, all files are in the expected directories. Sample letter layout, replacement for NTG brief style

I currently use the Dutch NTG letter style with LaTeX, which I would like to replace with a ConTeXt based system. Even though LaTeX works fine, I think that I can better spend my time on learning ConTeXt as this will not limit me so much in future projects. So I was wondering if any ConTeXt users have already created a layout file to write letters, with the appropriate placement of the Address, logo's, folding stripes, etc.. If not than I would like to solicit some pointers on how to do two things: 1. place a logo at an exact XY position on the paper 2. exact placement of the address block (as this needs to fit with standard envelope windows). Resetting an enumeration

Wrap-around.

Context will place figures right or left. However Context will not AFAIK fit text to an irregular illustration, or around an arc etc. TheTeXbook describes a very tedious command: \parshape (p101) which could allow one to fit the lines to an illustration, arc etc. by hand. If however I comment out \chapter{foo} then chapter bar appears in the contents. I have also tried the write etc. commands and if they appear before the \completecontent command then the TOC blanks out. This may be a function of The general TeX procedure to write out the items on one pass and bring them in on the next. The write to \chapter{foo} may reinitialize the external file when it is encountered on the second pass. According to the TeXbook the write occurs when the page is shipped out. So \chapter{foo} probalbly clobbers the external file. Still the TOC mechanism should be developed in a way that it is possible to incorporate items occurring before the TOC in the TOC. This is not an uncommon requirement. A cure might be to move the external file to a different file name at the end of each pass in texexec, and bring in that copy of the file instead of the original external file to create the actual TOC.. That way any premature references would not go to the copy but to a new original. Pehaps Hans could rewrite the texexec or the Content macros themselves to do this. In pseudocode of sorts it would work like this: \starttext \chapter{foo} =write to filea \placecontent= read from fileb \chapter{bar}=write to filea \chapter{alpha}=write to filea (etc.) \stoptext. copy filea to fileb end -- John Culleton Able Typesetters and Indexers

Sorry if this is answered in a manual somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. Yes I have tried looking in ALL the docs, but can't seem to find anything that helps. I am looking to switch macro package from Latex to Context. Up until now I have used the \usepackage{palatino} to get all pdf files generated using Palatino. This has been working fine. Hi, Subject say some, let me elaborate to make myself perfectly clear. I have a few figures at the end of a section, right before the start of the next section. The figures however end up in the wrong location. I've seen various permutations of the following: figures are placed in a location where they don't fit (with the figure starting below the lower margin and only 50% fitting on the page) and an empty page-end, followed by the section title, followed by one figure below the title, and the second figure (on yet another new page) ... Are there commands to flush the figures, or is there another, more elegant solution? Which part of the setup would you need to see to help me solve this issue? Hello ConTeXters, First, I'd like to thank Hans, belatedly, for the columns.pdf manual which I have been happily using. Column sets are one of the main reasons that I have enjoyed working with ConTeXt so much, and having a manual makes them much, much easier to figure out. Second, I would like to ask if "text flows", which are introduced in the manual, are implemented at all. When I attempt to use the examples, ConTeXt complains about the macros not being defined. Searching through the sources also fails to find anything. I am using the latest beta. Are they only defined in the dutch interface? Any pointers at all would be helpful. Regards, Erik Hetzner

Dear ConTeXtnicians I am trying to track down something which causes \setupwhitespace not to work as expected in my document. Minimal documents work correctly but my complex handbook document has been affected. What other commands might cause \setupwhitespace to malfunction. \setupwhitespace[small] does not appear to work. It seems to give the same result as medium. none gives none, 3pt does not give 3pt but instead prints 3pt as though it was text, big does give slightly bigger than medium but not as much as it should. Hello there, I am starting to move away from LaTeX to ConTeXt and was wondering if some ConTeXt users have written scripts to convert LaTeX documents to ConTeXt documents. Or perhaps just partial conversions, for example from a LaTeX tabular environment to a ConTeXt table. Does anyone have a working TeX installation on OSX where the \setupbodyfont[pos] command works? I cannot get it to work, I tried installating the fonts manually using the texfont command which did not work. I also tried \usetypescript[berry][8a] and other commands wich were mentioned in the maillist archive, but to no avail. I have the impression problems are caused by Context wanting EC encoded files which were dropped from the teTeX distribution some time ago. As I am no font expert I would appreciate some help. Printing ConTeXt macro files.

Embedded movies

Hi, I somehow completely fail to embed successfully a movie into a pdf. I tried to test-view http://www/pragma-ade.com/general/uptodate/up-003-s.pdf but this failed with: "texwork.mov" cannot be found. Would you like to choose a replacement file? Then I tried \externalfigure[elf-iso.avi][height=\textheight, width=\textheight, preview=no, repeat=yes] The problem I have is that I have neither a working AVI file (the one I created with mencoder doesn't work with Quicktime or Windows Media Player due to the codec used) nor a .mov file. Windows Media player is able to play a MPEG file with the extention .avi, but Acrobat doesn't like it :-( Moreover Acrobat Reader is not able to create useful error message :-( Thus: Is it in principle possible to embed *.mpg files? This would save me a lot of work. (Somehow I failed to do so when modifying core-fig.tex) Otherwise, what is the best way to proceed? Tobias PS: Rdesktop is a nice way to access Windows from Linux :-) but Adobe could support movies in PDFs under Linux :-(

Gridsetting

Hi, I'm new to this list and have quite a lot of questions. (Questions of course I can not answer after reading the contributions to the list.) I'll start with three of them in individual threads. Its funny that the ability to set gridfitting text, is often characterized as something that belongs in the domain of wordprocessors or DTP programs. For me it is an essential feature of typesetting since my publisher demands it---for good reasons: When printing on thin paper (paperback) one would see the lines of the backside of the paper inbetween the lines of its frontside---destroying a good contrast of the text. Beside of its general structure the announced ability to set to grid (dt.: Registerhaltig) is one of reasons for me to get into Context. But after a while of testing I'm not sure whether Context does what I want it to do. Here are my expectations. Hi, First: Is there a nice way to setup the fontcolour? Currently I encapsulate the whole document with a startcolor/stopcolor block. Second: I want to build up a slide in steps: | first | | first | | first | | | ==[click]=> | second | =[click]=> | second | | | | | | third | If I recall correctly I've seen one implementation for this (in ConTeXt) using JavaScript (and field stacks), but I cannot find anything regarding this. The other possibility (used by all LaTeX packages I'm aware of) is to produce multiple pages: one per step. Does anyone know by heart where the JS method is burried in ConTeXt? Tobias

Double bar means hyphen?

In some of the sample texts that come with Context (Zapf etc.) the double bar is used to indicate a hyphen, perhaps an unbreakable hyphen. In pdftex it translated to an em? dash instead. Is this combination documented somewhere? || -- John Culleton Able Typesetters and Indexers

No MP graphics after installation under MikTeX

Dear ConTeXt users, I tried to (re)install ConTeXt under MikTeX in the following way, but a simple test file with a flowchart and a MP graphic gave me the texts of the flowchart only. Can anybody give me advice? Thank you in advance, Sytse Knypstra These are the steps I took: 0. Perl has already been installed; MS-DOS path contains a.o. d:\perl\bin;c:\localtexmf\context\perltk;c:\texmf\miktex\bin 1. Remove old MikTeX through the Control Panel. Delete old localtexmf and texmf directories 2. Install MikTeX 2.2 (large). The localtexmf and texmf trees are generated. 3. Remove ConTeXt files through the MikTeX Package Manager. 4. Unzip cont-tmf.zip in c:\localtexmf 5. Unzip runperl.zip in c:\localtexmf\context\perltk 6. Copy texexec.rme to texexec.ini Add a % before: set TeXShell to tetex Uncomment: % set TeXShell to miktex 7. Copy runperl.exe to texexec.exe, fdf2tan.exe, fdf2tex.exe, makempy.exe, mptopdf.exe, texfind.exe, texfont.exe, texshow.exe, texutil.exe 9. Open a MS-DOS window and go to directory c:\localtexmf\context\perltk. Run texexec --verbose. This gives an overview of the settings. 10. In the file pdftex.cfg in the directory c:\texmf\pdftex\config I add: map +context.map 11. In the directory c:\localtexmf\tex\context\user copy the file cont-sys.rme to cont-sys.tex and add: \setupoutput [pdftex] \recycleMPslotstrue Uncomment the following lines: \runMPgraphicstrue and \runMPTEXgraphicstrue Now the following lines are active: \unprotect \setupoutput [pdftex] \runMPgraphicstrue \runMPTEXgraphicstrue \recycleMPslotstrue \useMETAFUNformattrue \newprettytrue \protectbufferstrue \protect \endinput 12. But I have to admit, I don't know that much about Japanese to know how much those glyphs are needed. Like Matt said, maybe for names and technical documents, the need for JIS X 0212 glyphs is higher. The use of Japanese/Chinese characters is also a really interesting topic. Many people used to believe that the invention and widespread use of the computer would mean the end of those characters, but in reality, it is the opposite. Thanks to advanced Input Method Editors, rare and 'obscure' characters get used even more, since they can easily be accessed. So JIS X 0212 support in ConTeXt would cool to have. It's also quite interesting to see how JIS X 0212 gets encoded. It's part of EUC-JP CodeSet 3. If an implementation of Japanese in ConTeXt supports EUC-JP, and needs to support JIS X 0212, we need to have a ConTeXt switching mechanism to change from a two-byte encoding (EUC-JP CodeSet 0,1 and 2 for JIS X 0201 and 0208 support) to a three-byte encoding (EUC-JP CodeSet 3 for JIS X 0212). This could be an interesting challenge to implement, but I don't see a reason why it shouldn't be possible. Naturally, UTF-8 supports everything we'll ever going to need! :-) My best, Tim

Writing Japanese using ConTeXt

Hello all, This is my first message to the list. I've been using ConTeXt for a few months now, and so far it does everything I want to do with it, plus much and much more! Recently, I've made the 'unwise' decision to start studying Japanese next year, and of course I want to keep on using ConTeXt to write my school papers. I am already able to create Japanese documents using a terrific Japanese TeX distribution (w32tex) and pLaTeX, but everyone on this mailinglists knows that LaTeX is kinda 'weird' (to put it mildly) when you are used to the beauty that is ConTexT! :-) So I decided to find a way to write Japanese in ConTeXt. First I tried using the eOmega/ConTeXt combination since I have some great OTPs for it, but soon found out that Omega is still "the TeX of the future", in other words, not the "TeX of today" and extremely unstable. Then I decided to try ConTeXt's UTF-8 support. I created the following test file: -------------- \chardef\utfunihashmode=1 \setupunicodefont [japanese] [scale=1.0] \definefontsynonym [JapaneseMinchoRegular][cyberb] \defineunicodefont [Mincho][JapaneseMincho][japanese] \Mincho \enableregime[utf] \starttext ... <Imagine a bunch of UTF-8 encoded Japanese characters here> ... \stoptext -------------- cyberb is the Unicode font cyberbit.ttf which I installed using ttf2tfm: ttf2tfm cyberbit.ttf cyberb@Unicode@ For output I use dvipdfmx with the following line added to the map file: cyberb@Unicode@ Identity-H :0:cyberbit.ttf Well, to my big surprise, it worked! I saw the characters without a problem. Using the 'scale' option of \setupunicodefont I could also change the size of the characters. Great! But since there are usually no spaces in a Japanese sentence, there is no line breaking. And as you can imagine, line breaking is a useful feature to have! :-) I imagined that the line breaking problem is also happening when someone wants to write Chinese, so I decided to take a look in ConTeXt's Chinese module to see how it is handled there. I saw that the Chinese module adds an interglyph space after a character, which is breakable by TeX. This happens in a macro that is (indirectly) called using \setupunicodefont and the 'command' option. I decided to try the same in my test file. But first, I checked to see if using the 'command' option in \setupunicodefont actually worked: I added the following macro: \def\HandleJapaneseGlyph {\insertunicodeglyph} And changed my \setupunicodefont into: \setupunicodefont [japanese] [scale=1.0, command=\HandleJapaneseGlyph] Well, I still get Japanese characters like normal. I imagined that if I removed \insertunicodeglyph from my macro, I wouldn't get to see them. But this is not the case. I found out that I can do anything in my macro, but it doesn't have an effect on the Japanese characters. They still get printed. I also found out that I can even use command=\whateveryoulike and it still wouldn't complain that such a macro doesn't exist. I get the feeling that the command option is completely ignored. Apparently, my idea isn't going to work. :-( To make a long story even longer, I would like to know why it doesn't work, or what I should do in order to make it work. What is the correct method to divert the Unicode character output to another macro so that I can add a breakable space after each character? Well, I've been using ConTeXt for only a few months now, so maybe the complexity of this is way over my head. At least it kept me busy! But on the other hand, I don't think writing Japanese is much more different than writing Chinese. It must be possible to achieve without much trouble or reinventing the wheel. destinations in PDF

I missed the support in context, to define exact destination (page 553 [533], PDF Reference 1.5 PD) in interactive documents. The defined types lack the support for destinations, that don't lie on the top of a page. An example to make it clear... You have made a PDF document with bookmarks, the focus is set to width for good readability. Now you press a bookmark for a section and Acroreader opens the correct page. But hey, where is the section? If it starts at the lower quarter of the page, it isn't visible at all. So I tried to change this behaviour, playing around with bookmarks (as one fuction using destinations). As I'm no TeX wizzard, the result is very limited. But I hope it's enough to show that there are more or less good reasons for an extension of destinations in context. Regards, Peter
