Hello all! I had not set the path for the Ghost script correctly. Now that I have set it, the conversion to pdf works like magic! Thanks a lot for the help, special thanks to Mr.Burnus and Mr.Hagen and Mr.Egger for their replies. I use Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8 to convert jpg images to eps. But the images are not very good when converted to pdf. How can I improve the quality of the images? Suggestions please! Thanks and regards, -priya.

Hi all. I've revisited the euler support scripts with an eye towards bold math. I think I have it right now. I tried applying the same techniques to computer-modern math in order to get bold math going for the TeX default font, and it seems not to switch back to the right font after a grouped \bfm font switch. The minimum case for this is $x{\bfm x}x$, which gives an italic x, a bold x, and then a roman x. Hans (others with full Lucida math?), what does the test case look like? Hello all! Thank you all so much for your guidelines in the conversion of eps images to pdf! I will try and answer the queries of Mr.Tobias Burnus: -Please check, whether DataVisualization.pdf exists. Can you open it in acroread/gv? The DataVisualization.pdf does exist, but is blank. Even when I open it in acrobat reader or gv it is totally blank If it doesn't exist, does ghostscript show DataVisualization.eps flawlessly? -What is shown in the TeX-produced PDF file? An empty frame, ...? When I use \placefigure[here,force] {Project Hierarchy Window} {\externalfigure[DataVisualization][type=pdf,height=11cm,width=13cm,preset=yes]} there is a blank space with no frame at all,only the caption is there at the bottom. The original eps image is about 893KB and the PDF shows only 1KB size, so obviously the conversion is not happening, I guess.Any other pointers? Thanks and regards, -priya

Notes and questions on 432 page book.

My latest project is almost finished. I have a few comments and questions. The book consists of one part with five unnumbered chapters followed by a second part of 101 numbered chapters, and some endmatter. I was unable to make the Context version of the TOC to single space these 110 or so chapter entries which made the whole TOC longer (more pages) than desired. So I threw Eplain into the mix and typeset the TOC only using the Eplain macros. If there is a way to single space the TOC using the regular Context macros I will be happy to eliminate the Eplain, which may solve some of the other problems. The last six pages consist of an order form, a page of text, and another order form, all backed up by blank pages for six pages total. The order form is created with some \framedtext and \starttable trickery. It compiles fine by itself but gives errors in the \starttable etc. when combined with the main body of the book. It will also coexist with the front matter, so eplain is probably not the culprit. In any case at the moment I have two correct pdfs which I will try to knit together with psmerge or something similar. I used a conventional construction of the job, with a main file which calls subordinate files. In this mode I ended up with two unwanted blank pages after the index. If however I put the \stoptext statement at the end of the main subordinate file the unwanted blank pages disappear. Hi all! Thanks a lot for the prompt reply, specially to Mr.Hans Hagen and Mr.Tobias Burnus. I don't know anything about Ruby, so I tried using texutil - -epstopdf, but when the ghostscript window comes up it is blank and nothing happens after that. What do I need to do? Internal documentation of Context modules.

I have figured out that there is a way to print out the internal documentation of the various Context modules in a manner that makes some sense. I first use grep to extract all the %D lines of a module into a separate file e.g., foo.tex. Then I eliminate the %D tag from all lines using Vim. I add \starttext and \stoptext statements. Then I run texexec --pdf foo.tex. The result is imperfect but more or less intelligible. It seems to me that there might be a script buried somewhare in the system that does this better. Hello all! I have been using Context only recently. I need to import eps images into the documents(a lot of them). Despite running texutil and setting the path for Ghost Script, I am getting only blank eps images or gray boxes in the pdf. Is there a driver that I need to do the conversion from eps to pdf ? I am able to import jpg images. Do I have to convert the eps images to pdf externally and then import them using context tags? I have been stuck on this problem for amonth now.Help please! Taking the last question first, when I switched over to eplain and makeindex the error of my ways became apparent--- a spurious space in an \index statement which in makeindex sorts that item ahead of the letter "A". The Context reaction to the error was different. But it was clearly user error. Since I have a job to get out the door this week, and tomorrow is Friday, I will continue with makeindex. I will also use the eplain macro for the TOC. An answer to my earlier question in re. spacing in the TOC would be welcomed however for future reference. I will try \filbreak and see if anything breaks. 1. Is it OK to use the plain tex command \filbreak in a Context run? If not OK is there a Context command that has the same effect (preventing a section of text from being split between pages)? 2. Also, I have tried several changes to my TOC code but it still yields a blank line between items. Yet the TOC of some manuals are single spaced. I cannot spot the anomaly. 3. Finally, I notice an anomaly in the indexing capability of Context. For many years I have relied on makeindex, which among other things prevents dupicative entries (the same page number printed twice on the same entry.) However Context seems to allow that. marking, headers and 2 columns

Dear readers of this list, I would like to typeset a bible-text with ConTeXt. The header should print the first and the last verse on that particular page. I used the commands \marking to mark the verses and \getmarking to setup the headers as shown in the excerpt below. This works correctly with a single column layout, but not in a two column layout. The last verse printed in the headers is not the correct one, the first or the second on the following page is given. Is there a work around for this problem? Good evening. Is there some restriction to Metapost macros when compiled by texexec --mptex? Font/UTF-8 input question

Hello, I'd like to use a Unicode font such as Linux Libertine [1]. Besides things which should happen "automatically" like ligatures, I want to enter all characters directly in the UTF-8 file (including those wierd characters). I remember that there is some UTF-8 support in ConTeXt, but I don't remember the details. Is it possible to simply enter a character such as U+FB02 or do I have first to adapt both the input encoding and the font encoding files? It contains ~412 characters, including those required by MES-1 (Multilinual European Subset <http://www.evertype.com/standards/iso10646/pdf/cwa13873.pdf> No. 1 [2]) and is available in normal and italic (unfortunally no bold or small caps, yet). Note that this font still requires some polishing, but the nice thing is that the author reacts rather fast to feature requests (though I probably redeemed all my free vouchers for a few IPA characters ;). I want the Table of Contenst entries at normal (single) spacing but they are occurring with white space between the lines. Superimposing two flowcharts

Hi all, I would like to make a flowchart in which one shape (FLOWcell) is essentially bigger than the other shapes (in fact it should occupy the space for two ordinary shapes). Now I made two flowcharts; one consists of the one bigger shape, while the other consists of the remaining shapes (of which two are invisible because their shape is defined as `node'). My idea is to put one flowchart on top of the other. Is this possible? And if it is, how should I do this? B.t.w. using `offset=overlay' in \setupFLOWcharts gives a syntax error. Sytse Knypstra

Possible bug in texexec

Dan Luecking has reported the following problem on c.t.t.: When mptopdf is used on a .mp file it preprocesses the file and the result (on my system it seems always to be named mptrace.tmp) is run through mpost. This mptrace.tmp has new-lines after every semicolon (;). This causes an error when the semicolon is part of a literal string, because mpost syntax requires such strings to be entirely on one line. I mentioned also texexec, because mptopdf seems to call texexec for some purposes. I know too little perl to even know what to look for, much less propose a patch. This behavior has been confirmed under WinXP (fptex = TeXLive8) and Mac OS X (tetex). This particular problem can affect the latest mfpic (0.7, which I maintain) if a user processes mfpic's .mp output file with mptopdf. Users can work around the bug by modifying their copy of mfpic.tex, changing the line GBmsg "Bad mfpic installation; mfpic and grafbase % to something like GBmsg "Bad mfpic installation: mfpic and grafbase % This change will be provided as patch to mfpic shortly. -- Morten Høgholm

ConTeXt and the blind

I have very recently launched a new journal which has been designed on the assumption that it will exist in both electronic form and in print—hence, it is produced using ConTeXt and exists natively in PDF files. This morning I was asked by a colleague who is totally blind whether it would be possible to for him have ASCII or .txt files that he could use easily with his screen reading software. (My sense is that he may be able to use PDF files with this software, but that it is not easy.) So, does anyone on the list have ideas about how to produce such files from the files I currently have in hand or any experience with this sort of problem? Is there, for instance, a way to strip away all the formatting commands from a ConTeXt source file automatically so as to leave an unencoded .txt file that I could send him? I gather that he can use .htm files, but so far as I can tell there is no path from a ConTeXt source file to an HTML file—at least, a specific query about this made recently on this list by someone else seems to have gone unanswered. Generalized \installcompoundcharacter

With the advent of UTF-8, there comes a great possibility to improve readability of the TeX code. For example: instead of \int_a^b, you could write S_a^b, where S is the character for integral. Or greek letters and any other math symbol imaginable. I tried using \installcompoundcharacter S {\int} and similar commands and all the characters show up nicely, but the spacing is all wrong, because they are interpreted as variables instead of operations, relations, ... I think this replacement would be easy to implement (if it isn't already implemented), because with math symbols, you don't have to worry about hyphenation. You could simply replace the characters with corresponding command before sending it to TeX. I already made some kind of python script that does that, but for each file separately. And with many files, you have to preprocess each one individually, which sums up to another shell script and many temporary files. Cheers, Matija

Moving chapternumber in the margin ...

Hi everybody, Studying the details manual I thought to have found a way to print the chapter number on the margin. Each increase of the chapternumber would move the figure a predefined distance downwards. Now when using a \def{\dimexpr(\realpageno\rightmarginwidth)} my chapternumber moves down. Thankx Hans, But why does this work with "def" and not with "vardef" . "list" is just a macro name i've used. And "A,B,C,A" is just the replacement text I want when I call the macro "list". Is there any other way of doing this? Page number in outer margin?

I want to place the page number vertically centered in the outer margin, with some prettyprinting. Does one do this with the \setpagenumber command, the \inmargin command, or some combination thereof? Vinuth, I've been trying to get clear about issues like this recently. Perhaps my answer will not be completely correct. But here goes. One difference between 'def' and 'vardef' is that 'def' makes the symbolic token which follows into a spark, whereas vardef leaves it as a tag. (This is the language that Knuth uses in his Metafont Book.) The difference between sparks and tags is the readiness with which Metafont interprets their meaning. So far as Metafont is concerned, your input consists of a stream of tokens, and at some point in its digestion of your input file it has to interpret each of these tokens. But the stage of digestion at which it interprets a symbolic token depends on whether it is a spark or a tag. It interprets sparks sooner than it interprets tags. Generally speaking - there are ways to prevent it - Metafont interprets sparks in its mouth, whereas the stage at which it interprets tags depends on the circumstances. This is why your program works if you define the symbolic token 'list' using 'def': 'list' becomes a spark whose meaning is 'A,B,C,A'. As soon as Metafont reads 'for suffixes $=list' it interprets 'list', replacing it with 'A,B,C,A'. So writing 'forsuffixes $=list' is equivalent to writing 'forsuffixes $=A,B,C,A'. Perhaps you have guessed now why your program does not work if you define 'list' using 'vardef': 'list' remains a tag and so when Metafont reads 'forsuffixes $=list' it does not interpret it at once. In fact, it never interprets it. For the tags in the suffixes of variable names are never interpreted, and 'forsuffixes' causes 'list' to be treated as the suffix of a variable name. The tags in the suffixes of variable names just form part of the name. Only the subscripts in the suffixes of variable names are interpreted. 'forsuffixes $=list: pair T.$[]; endfor;' is equivalent to 'pair T.list;' Look at the following program: 1 vardef list = 2 1 3 enddef; 4 5 forsuffixes $=list: 6 T $ = 2; 7 endfor; 8 9 show(T list); 10 show(T 1); 11 show(T [list]); 12 13 end; Lines 1-3 assign the meaning the number 1 to the variable name 'list'; they are equivalent to 'list := 1;'. Lines 5-7 make the number 2 the meaning of the variable name 'T list'; they are equivalent to 'T list = 2;'. Line 9 produces the output '>>2', because 2 is the value of 'T list'. Line 10 produces the output '>>T1' because the variable has no value; 'T1' is undefined. Line 11 is interesting. The square brackets around 'list' force evaluation of the variable 'list', so 'show(T [list]);' is equivalent to 'show(T 1);'. The output is '>>T1' again. What do you think that the output of the following program will be? def list = 1 enddef; forsuffixes $=list: T $ = 2; endfor; show(T list); show(T 1); show(T [list]); end; In summary, vardef is intended for giving meanings to variable names. You should be suspicious of 'vardef list = A,B,C,A; enddef;' because A,B,C,A cannot be the value of a variable name. (I assume that this was Hans's point, when he said that Metapost lacks the concept of a list.) If you want to understand things like this, I strongly recommend that you read Knuth's Metafont Book. It makes everything very clear, and nowhere else is the detail explained. The most relevant chapters are the ones on variables, macros, and loops. How to rotate a single character on a line?

Hi all. I want to use some arrows of the ZapfDingbats fonts. Most of the arrows included in this font are directed from left to right. I tried to use \rotate to produce arrows directed to different directions. Yet, rotate produces new lines. Example: \definefontsynonym[ZapfDingbats][zd] \definefont[Zapf][ZapfDingbats at 24pt] \rotate[rotation=180]{\Zapf\char234} {\Zapf\char234} The example is intended to produce an arrow directed to the left followed by an arrow directed to the right. The result however is an arrow directed to the left followed by a new line with an arrow directed to the right. intended: <- -> result: <- -> Does someone know how the new line can be suppressed? Changing header size on chapter-pages

Hi, I am currently trying to create a letter style. The first page of each letter (introduced by the heading-command \letter; many letters could be in one document) should have a high header (11cm) to provide space for logo, etc. (which I am planning to define using layers, inspired by details.pdf). All other pages should have a different and smaller header (1cm). \useURL (mail address) problem

How does one enter the underscored space in firstname_lastname@institution when using \useURL so that when the link in the PDF is selected, it opens the mail application (Mail.app) and the message is addressed to firstname_lastname@institution? Right now, I have \useURL [AuthorEmailAddress] [mailto:firstname\_lastname@institution] [] [{firstname\_lastname@institution}] in my source file and this displays properly in the PDF produced via ConTeXt. However, when the link is selected in the PDF (in Acrobat) and my mail application opens, the message is addressed to firstnamechar 95 lastname@institution Granted, the user can easily clean this up, but is there way to avoid this? I have tried two or three ways of entering the underscore but with no luck so far. Many thanks. Alan

\fontrange and \currentfontscale

Hi Hans, TeXnicians. I thought I'd take another look at the \fontrange macros (commented) at the beginning of font-ini. I think they might be one way of adapting different optical sizes for Unicode fonts. I'm trying to work in the current scaling, but I run into some pure dimension math and expansion problems that are way beyond my skills. I was hoping someone might be able to give me a push in the right direction: \def\dodofontrange#1 #2 % {\ifdim\dimexpr(\currentfontscale\bodyfontsize) #2% ... results in: ! Missing = inserted for \ifdim. <to be read again> s <argument> s a \dodofontrange ...rentfontscale \bodyfontsize ) #2 #1\expandafter \gobbleunti... which I interpret as \currentfontscale only being expanded as "sa 1.200" instead of a number. ConTeXt's CD

Hello, I'm trying "ConTeXt on CD" using http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/tex.iso.bz2 First of all: it is really amazing ! Everything needed for ContTeXt on one CD and ready to use. I'll keep this CD in my pocket for now :-) Since I'm a nasty user, here are a suggestion and some problems: 1/ What about adding a shortcut to cscite.bat under the CD's root or an autorun.inf? It would be much more natural than usr/local/context/cscite.bat 2/ With the last version, 29-Mar-2004 21:35, when I try to "compile" readme.tex (copied on hard-disk and opened with scite) with Ctrl+F7 (concheck readme.tex) I've got a "file not found" error. 3/ When I try to build the same file I've got the following error: fonts : [palatino] [texnansi] [] !
