Hi, I got a simple drawing madeup in Metapost, which is then compiled into a pdf file with context. Now that I want to include this graphic in a text I stumble over the following: pdfeTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.11a-2.1 (Web2c 7.5.2) ConTeXt ver: 2004.6.30 fmt: 2004.7.21 Error: PDF version 1.5 -- xpdf supports version 1.4 (continuing anyway) Error (0): PDF file is damaged - attempting to reconstruct xref table... Error: Couldn't find trailer dictionary Error: Couldn't read xref table subsubject : - De tekst op het Gabarit Error: pdfetex.exe (file ./gabarit.pdf): xpdf: reading PDF image failed ==> Fatal error occurred, the output PDF file is not finished! Problems with left and right

Hello-- I have noticed a couple of cases where ConTeXt macros seem to have confused left and right sides: 1) I want to format some text in two columns, where the left column is right-aligned and the right column is left-aligned. I found I had to do this: \defineparagraphs [ingredient] [n=2, before={\blank[small]},after={\blank[small]}] \setupparagraphs [ingredient] [1] [width=.16\textwidth,align=left,style=bold] 2) In order to format format headers for a book so that the book title appears on the left-hand page and the section title on the right, I had to do this: \setupheadertexts [] [section] [title] [] ... which, as I read the documentation, is in the opposite order to what it should be. Hallo ConTeXters, I am playing with defining my own macro with key=value parameters. Please, consider definition: \def\setupField[#1]#2[#3]{\getparameters[Field!#1!][#3]} \setupField[name][mykey=value,textwidth=2cm] If you let ConTeXt to show the values by \message{ <mykey=\getvalue{Field!name!mykey}> <textwidth=\getvalue{Field!name!textwidth}> <tekstbreedte=\getvalue{Field!name!tekstbreedte}> } you obtain <mykey=value> <textwidth=\Field!name!textwidth > <tekstbreedte=2cm> While 'mykey' is OK, predefined keys (like textwidth, text, style, ...) lead to undefined parameter, that behave like \relax. I can imagine next solutions: 1) Do not use predefined keys in my macros, e.g. textWidth instead of textwidth [=user unfriendly]. 2) Use original (mostly Dutch) keys inside of my macros [=developer unfriendly]. 3) Define: \unprotect \def\getparametersALL{\dogetparameters\dosetvalueALL} \def\dosetvalueALL#1#2{\@EA\def\csname#1#2\endcsname} \protect and use: \def\setupField[#1]#2[#3]{\getparametersALL[Field!#1!][#3]} \setupField[name][mykey=value,textwidth=2cm] \message{ <mykey=\getvalue{Field!name!mykey}> <textwidth=\getvalue{Field!name!textwidth}> <tekstbreedte=\getvalue{Field!name!tekstbreedte}> } it gives: <mykey=value> <textwidth=2cm> <tekstbreedte=\Field!enname!tekstbreedte> Is there any other (more elegant and not-so-dirty) solution? Hi all ! let us imagine we have defined the following command: \def\SideFigure#1#2#3#4#5% { \placefigure[#1]{#2}{\externalfigure[#3][width=#4\makeupwidth]} #5 } which can be used to put a figure aside a companion text... but, what happens if the text is to be typed... ?? How to read syntax descriptions

In the beginner's manual, we have for \startitemize the following: \startitemize[..,..,..][..,..=..,..] ... \stopitemize I was wondering how do you read this in english? Based on the examples, am I correct to say the following? 1) The \startitemize is optionally followed by a comma separated list of parameters enclosed in brackets. 2) Then a set of key-value pairs enclosed in brackets follows. Again this is optional. If this is correct, then what about \setupitemize?. It says \setupitemize[.1.][..,.2.,..][..,..=..,..] So again let me guess .1. stands for a number The third set could be key-value pairs What about the set in the middle? Can we have an explanation for these please. Salman

Hallo Hans, according to widget manual and logic of the rest fields I think that definition of \definelinefield (in core-fld.tex) should be \def\definelinefield#1#2#3#4#5% {\setfield{#1}{#2}{}{}{\@@DriverFieldKids}{#3}{\@@DriverFieldMode\@@DriverFieldFree\@@DriverFieldAuto}{}{#5}} instead of \def\definelinefield#1#2#3#4#5% {\setfield{#1}{#2}{}{}{\@@DriverFieldKids}{#3}{\@@DriverFieldMode\@@DriverFieldFree\@@DriverFieldAuto}{}{#4}} (it means #4 -> #5, dafault form value is in the #5 parameter not $4) Vit Zyka

continuous numbering over components?

For one of the products I want to achieve a continuous numbering (as I get when `texexec`ing the product file) but I want a single pdf per component. I expect that there is an elegant solution, but didn't find it yet. So any hint is appreciated. How to use m-cweb module

I was looking at the CWEB demo off the pdfTeX page. Can someone please tell me how I would use the m-cweb package on TeX, the program web file. The first step would be to create the tex file itself using 'weave tex.web' Than I suppose I have to create an input file for conTeXt. What would be the contents of this file and mods do I have to make to tex.tex before I run it through texexec? Also I am interested in the screen optimized version of it. Salman

fighting with footnotes

Dear posse, I am having trouble with footnotes. For an article, I want some footnotes to be symbolized by \ast, \dag, etc, but without affecting the numbering of regular footnotes. For example, the title of article may have a footnote symbolized by \ast, but the first footnote in the main text should still be symbolized by `1' (then `2', etc). I tried localfootnotes but I could not get them placed in the footer at the bottom of the page. [location=page] did not help. Related question: can't I just specify a footnote outside the counting mechanism with any symbol I want at any point in the text, without disturbing the regular counted footnotes? I'm also confused by the conversion key. page 93 of the documentation reads: "With the variable conversion you set up the type of numbering. You may even use your own character, for example an emdash (keyed in as ---Â)." But if I do, e.g., conversion={---}, TeX complains of course. What am I missing? Related questions: Where are the conversion keys set 2, set 3, etc. documented? How can I reset the numbering if I make local changes? For example, I am using regular default footnotes, then I switch to conversion=set 2, then I want to reset to the default footnotes without losing my numbering. I thought that [n=0] etc. might help but that key seems to affect the paragraph formatting of the footnotes, not the numbering. I tried using \start-\stop but that does not isolate the counting mechanism apparently. Fighting TeX is really frustrating sometimes, and I'm sure the answers are really simple... Best Idris

a problem with \defineprotrudefactor

After a long lull, I have installed a recent Context (ver: 2004.6.30) and find that my typescripts that do margin kerning are having trouble. Invoking a typescript that uses \defineprotrudefactor will cause the job to stop; I don't see any error messages. When the problem line is commented out the job completes. Hi, I'm going to SF now, the practical tex conference, so don't expect to much input from me for a week. Some time some after i'm back, i will add basic support for xml formatting objects to the context distribution. Because this is not of interest to everyone, especially not if you want high quality output and/or control etc etc i've set up a dedicated list for this http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/foxet So, feel free to join. There will not be much trafic in the beginning because i want to start discussion when those who are interested are on the list. And yes, there will be a paper and a screen manual (sample attached). And no, i will not code the documents in xml -) The basic idea is the following: x-fo.tex : base module x-fe.tex : a few basic extensions x-fd.tex : definitions (fonts, color) and later: x-fx.tex : more interesting extensions and maybe on your own machine: x-fu.tex : user extensions The x-fx is something we have to discuss on the list since we need format specs for that. For those not interested, you may consider xml-fo support to be yet another graphic format since one day or the other you may end up with placed xml-fo (tex and xml-fo can therefore be used mixed). Enhanced Enumeration?

Hello, i'm currently writing a script on biosignal analysis. And therefore i need such things as definitions, lemmas, theorems, remarks and so on. One can easily define numbered versions of these using \defineenumeration. But i need two extra fetures: first: Some theorems have names, some not. Is it possible to introduce a new optional argument to the enumeration (a 'named enumeration')? Something like \startTheorem[Shannon Sampling Theorem] You have to select $f_s\ge2 f_h$. \stopTheorem to get Theorem 1.1: (Shannon Sampling Theorem) You have top select fs\ge fh. Nevertheless it should be possible to label the theorem: \startTheorem[thm:shannon][Shannon Sampling Theorem] You have to select $f_s\ge2 f_h$. \stopTheorem \in{Theorem}[thm:shannon] we have seen.... Second: Is it possible to generate a content list of all named theorems? synopsis / column(set)s?

Hi all, I am trying to make a synopsis, i.e a text where in the leftmost column the original document can be read, in the middle the changes and in the right column the reasons for the changes. So basically I want to typeset first some text in the leftmost column (over several pages, on a grid), and then the one in the middle and then the one on the right. While documenting some Matlab code for barely computer literates I wish to use the positional graphics described in the MetaFun manual. Not sure if this is possible of course. I am not at all successful so far since I cannot get the escaping mechanism to accept my code. It appears that the /hpos works just fine but the {} generate problems. I have tried using <<>> in all ways I could think of but haven't been lucky yet. Is this possible? startappendices creates an extra empty page

Hi, When is use \startappendices \stopappendices to create appendices, I get an extra empty page. Is there a way to solve this? If I put another chapter after the \stopappendices statement, then there is no empty page. Virtual font tip

Hello, all-- After purchasing the FontSite 500 CD, I wanted to make good use of some of the nice text fonts it contains--in particular I wanted to create TeX virtual fonts that would add ff, ffi, and ffl ligatures and replace the ugly ( ;-) ) lining numerals with old-style figures. After considerable effort I figured out how to edit the VPL files for the desired effect. I also wrote a Python script to automate the process, though it may well not work for anyone else. Anyway, since I have found very little documentation on virtual fonts, I thought others might benefit from my experience, so I wrote up the procedure and posted in the (new) TeX Tips section of my Web site. Stopping text from flowing around sidefloats

I'm a newbie in Context (and TeX) typesetting, but I'm seriously thinking of switching from my current wokflow, FrameMaker based, to a new one based on this system, impressive for its quality and flexibility. The main work at my office is the producing of technical manuals (250-500 pages) for megayachts, covering the entire workflow (layout, technical writing, illustrations etc.). My first attempt in the use of ConText was the finding of a way to mimic the basic layout currently used in Framemaker and the mode in which illustrations are currently placed in the manuals. The basic layout in Framemaker is composed of a main text flow in which a column is reserved for placing side notes (warning notes, danger notes etc.) and a second column is reserved for the main text. |------------------|----------------------------------------------| | | | | Side Notes | Main Text | | | | | | | |------------------|-----------------------------------------------| Normally the figures are placed in the main text area. In this case (depending from the width of the illustration) flows or doesn't the main text flow around the illustration. The larger figures however occupy all the width of the text flow ('Side Notes'+'Main Text') and the main text get interrupted by the illustration. I replicated the basic layout (the original layout is double sided but i don't care of this at this moment) with the following commands: \setuppapersize[A4][A4] \setuplayout [backspace=7.3cm,width=11.7cm,topspace=1.5cm,leftmargin=4cm, rightmargin=0cm,leftmargindistance=0.8cm,height=27.2cm,header=2cm,footer =2cm,location=singlesided,marking=on] The last command set the left margin, and should replicate the 'Side Notes' column of the original layout. With this setup there is no problem in placing figures smaller than the main text area. For placing the larger figures I followed an example taken from page 29 of the manual 'IT'S IN THE DETAILS' writing the following commands: \definefloat [largefigure][figure] \setupfloat [largefigure] [leftmargindistance=-\leftmargintotal,default={left,none,noident}] \useexternalfigure [provafigura] [Largefigure.pdf][width=16.5cm] .......... \placelargefigure [left] {ProvaFigura} {\externalfigure[provafigura]} The last command work as expected for figure placement but cause the text of the paragraph immediately following the \placefigure command to flow around the placed figure in a tiny column (around 1cm in width) at the right of the page and outside the main text flow. |------------------|----------------------------------------------|-a- | | |-b- | <---------------Large Figure ---------------------------->|-c- <----paragraph flowing outside the main text flow. | | |-d- |------------------|-----------------------------------------------|-e- What is wrong? bug in latest ConTeXt?

Hi syndicate, I have found a serious problem in the latest ConTeXt: when using \rotate[]{}, \raise does not seem to work probably. definetypeface usage

Trying to findout how ConTeXt's font mechanism works, I come to following question: From the brochure "Fonts in Context" (mfonts.pdf) I have picked up the notion that exercising a call to \definetypeface gets fonts in working order (see the examples there on font specifiers "funny" and "whow", for example, and the resulting typeface collection). Also in file type-exa.tex there is a typescript [postscript] where \definetypeface is exercised, seemingly to bring a matched series of times, helvetica and courier into existence. However, the usage of the postscript fonts via \setupbodyfont[pos] seems to be completely unconnected with this script (I traced the typescript checking). Neither can I find somany calls to \definetypeface (and its derivatives \dodefinetypeface and \dododefinetypeface); it seems they are barely used in the code. So, the questions are: - Does \setupbodyfont[pos] results in the scaled font set as given in type-exa? - Or does \definetypeface belong to an alternative/obsolete font definition scheme, totally unrelated to the definitions called up in the scripts in type-pre.tex, type-syn.tex, and other friends? - In preparing font scripts, can I therefore totally ignore \definetypeface or will that be disastrous for the result? Known nath bugs?

Hello all, is there a list of know nath bugs somewhere on the web? I tried to find one using Google, but unfortunately without success. The reason I'm asking this is that I'm encountering some problems with the module and would like to know if they are common or if it's related to my configuration. First of all, using the units module together with nath doesn't seem to work - for instance, $1\Micro\Coulomb$ works as expected without nath, but produces the error message "Please don't say \def cs{...}, say \def\cs{...}" when used together with nath. I also thought that delimiters like ( or [ should automatically adjust to the formula they contain, but (\sum_{something} \frac{something}{something}) only produces standard parentheses. Commands like \lbrace or \lbrack work as expected, though. If these problems are unknown, I can post a small example file and my logfile. Best regards, Sebastian

Hi, I have a question about \seeregister: It seems that the definition in cont-enp.pdf would want you to write \seeindex{DFA}{finite automaton+deterministic} if you have had \index{finite automaton+deterministic} already, but instead you're fourced to write it as \seeindex{DFA}{deterministic finite automaton} for it to come out sort of right. Configuration of SciTE under Linux

Dear Contexters As a bit of a newby on the Linux platform I can't get running everything as wanted. One of the problems I have is, that I am unable to compile a TeX source from within SciTE. I got the context.properties and the SciTEUsers.properties in my home directory. The other porperties files were copied into the SciTE directory. In SciteUsers.properties I have set the path to the location where the scripts are: path.context.rubyscripts=/usr/local/tex/texmf-local/scripts/context/ruby path.context.perlscripts=/usr/local/tex/texmf-local/scripts/context/perl nevertheless the scripts are not found. I get the following error in SciTE: texexec --autopdf --pdf test.tex sh: line 1: texexec: command not found >Exit code: 127 On the other hand, running texexec test from the console does result in the expected test.pdf file. Is there anyone who has a clue how to solve this? Kind regards Willi

I get the following error in SciTE: texexec --autopdf --pdf test.tex sh: line 1: texexec: command not found >Exit code: 127 On the other hand, running texexec test from the console does result in the expected test.pdf file. There is something I don't understand about the typescript business (using ConText version june 30, 2004): By calling \setupbodyfont[lbr] the following script (referred to als typescript number-1) in type-buy.tex (lines 161-170) is executed: \starttypescript [lbr] \usetypescript [serif,sans,mono,math,calligraphy,handwriting] [lucida] [name,special,\defaultencoding] \usetypescript [serif,sans,mono,math,calligraphy,handwriting] [default] [size] \usemathcollection[lbr] \usetypescript [all] [lucida] [\defaultencoding] \stoptypescript Also I have defined somewhere else a typescript (number-2): \starttypescript [Times] ... \stoptypescript WITHOUT the line "...[all]..." in typescript number-1 all goes well, lucida fonts result in the product. However, WITH the line "...[all]..." in typescript number-1 there is found the following match, as can be seen in the log (by setting \tracetypescriptstrue): >>> fonts : enter [Times] [] [] >>> fonts : check [all] [lucida] [texnansi] >>> fonts : matched Now that seems strange to me. I might be misunderstanding the typescript search mechanism, but why does it turn out that the search key [lucida] is ignored? Here it seems that after the [all] the following search keys are ignored, reducing the check to [all][][]; but why then bother giving these 2nd and 3rd key at all? But even if this behaviour is implied by giving the first search key as [all], it leads to wrong results. Because now the typescript number-2 is executed too, working havoc to the font setup. Does someone knows where there is information on the table environment in ConTeXt? I have read the intro on ConTeXt and the pamphlets from the Pragma-site on tabulate and btable, but there seem to be a lot more options than can be found in these; I encountered something like \AR etc. whose effects I could not figure out with some tests. Also there is some mention of Wichura's manual. Is this somewhere to be found on the internet? Thanks in advance. Hans van der Meer
