pdfeTeX crashes

I have MikTeX still installed and I downloaded context/install/mswincontext.zip (6.12.04) as well (I compile ConTeXt sources with "F7" within scite). The latter started to behave strange just "in the middle of the black". I have a document with 30 sites and about 3MB (some high resolution images) which worked just fine until some point. After 10 minutes pdfeTeX started crashing (and asking if the problem should be reported to Microsoft). If I compile the same document under MikTeX, it works just fine (except that I can't use \setupbodyfont[phv,ss,14.4pt] command). If I compile the document in some other directory (with no images) it works as well. Even more strange: after removing font definitions (both \setupbodyfont[phv,ss,14.4pt] and \usetypescript[adobekb][texnansi] \usetypescript[times][texnansi] \setupbodyfont[times,ss] cause problems) I get some strange error reports (see below), which I have to skip with some unusual combinations of Ctrl-C and quit, but the file compiles without a crash. The problem was most probably caused by PNG images, exported from MS PowerPoint slides, an example is on http://pub.mojca.org/mailinglists/context/alpha.png. They look just fine in any viewer, but as soon as I remove them, everything works perfect again. It looks like a very strange bug. Any ideas? Hello, could someone help me with placing a footnote in a multipage-table? Setting up a sombined list ...

Hi, I am trying to setup a special TOC which should show the version instead of a pagenumber. My approach was to setup newheads with \definehead[][] and defining a new combined list. The struggle is that I can't manage to get the list entries numbered and the lower level listentries are not indented as intended. Could some one give me a clue where I am missing the proper options. Please try the attached minimal file. Duplex question ...

All, I used the example shown in section 3.5 of the ConTeXt manual to enable duplex printing. I would like to shift the page as demonstrated in the first right/left pages in Figure 3.9. The following, however, does not work, as the right and left pages both remain in the top left corner. I'm using the MiKTeX distribution and WinEdt (TeXExec 5.2.3). Any info is appreciated ... bib module problem

The bib module won't complete the publications list when there is more than one cite command. Hallo Hans and other ConTeXters, I have started to collect and clean up Czech ConTeXt localization. And I have discovered that Tomas Hudec includeded Czech (non-trivial) sorting rules into texutils.pl (calling czsort.pl from Jan Pazdziora). Unfortunately it was not incorporated into official ConTeXt disribution. Hans, what is your prefereble solution in case of local sorting rules? I know, there is \definesortkey, but this mechanism is insufficient for Czech. I think that calling external Perl sorting routine is a suitable solution. finishing a module

I spent some (too much) time today improving my Greek module. For the time being, two questions remain; I'm confident that they're not too difficult for the experts; any help would be appreciated. I've succesfully defined my fonts and scale like so: \def\setupgreek#1[#2]{% \getparameters[GG][Scale=,Font=,#2] \edef\MyScale{\GGScale}% \processaction[\GGFont] [ SomeFont1=>\def\MyFont{somefont }, SomeFont2=>\def\MyFont{someotherfont }]% } \protect (The space after "somefont" looks ugly, but I haven't figured out how to get rid of it; TeX will always complain if I delete it.) 1. After this definition, this will work: \definebodyfont[4pt,5pt,6pt,7pt,8pt,9pt,10pt,10.5pt,11pt,12pt,14pt,14.4p t,16pt,18pt,20pt,22pt][rm][Gf=\MyFont sa \MyScale] This, however, will not work: \definefont[Gf][\MyFont sa \MyScale] and I don't see why. Can anybody explain? I see that the \definefont... takes care of the annoying problem with font sizes, so I would prefer that way. 2. In my module, I define some special symbols: \define\koppa{\getglyph{\MyFont}{\char37}} Is there a way to give the same scaling factor here as in the definition of \Gf? I tried \define\koppa{\getglyph{\MyFont scaled XXXX}{\char37}} as a first attempt which kind of works but gives me the letters "at" in the pdf in front of the symbol. Best Thomas

Hi, there seems to be a fundamental problem with headings - or at least I have :( Each kind of "emphasizing" - like \it \bf \cap \sc etc. - lets the respective phrase fall back to the documents bodyfont (see example below). How can I avoid this bug? Do I use wrong code? Yet another nath problem

\mathoptions@on is bug-ridden. It \def's <, but doesn't restore it upon exit (with \mathoptions@off). One solution is to simply add a \bgroup...\egroup pair to the two. That works for now, nikolai P.S. It seems that the \longrightarrow problem still remains. Was there no fix applied for this yet? Gerben's TeX+ConTeXt packages: can't find the format `cont-nl.fmt' ?

Hi, in the past I could use Gerben's TeX and ConTeXt distributions for Mac without manual changes. Last night I downloaded the "2004 stable" and Context-updater. If I now typeset a ConTeXt file as usual (texexec --pdf foo.tex) I get the following error: TeXExec 5.2.3 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2004 executable : pdfetex format : cont-nl inputfile : untitled output : pdftex interface : nl current mode : none TeX run : 1 This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.20a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.3) (/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/web2c/natural.tcx) Sorry, I can't find the format `cont-nl.fmt'; will try `context.fmt'. processaction in keyval lists

All, I couldn't resist spending some time today working on the Greek problem. I'm trying to write a proper module that would allow me to set up definitions for fonts and scaling. But I'm running into a problem that is beyond my meagre TeX abilities. I want to define the setup-command like so (using code that Taco send to the list a couple of months ago and that can be found on the wiki): \unprotect \def\setupgreek{\dodoubleempty\dosetupgreek} \def\dosetupgreek#1[#2]{% \getparameters[GG][Scale=,Font=,#2]%Font,Scale \edef\MyScale{\GGScale}% \expandafter\processaction\expandafter[\GGFont] [SomeFont1 =>\def\MyFont{somefont }, SomeFont2 =>\def\MyFont{someotherfont }] } \protect \definebodyfont[4pt,5pt,6pt,7pt,8pt,9pt,10pt,10.5pt,11pt,12pt,14pt,14.4p t,16pt,18pt,20pt,22pt][rm][Gf=\MyFont sa \MyScale] So I want this setup \setupgreek[Scale=1.5,Font=SomeFont1] to be expanded to somefont scaled at 1.5. However, when I process a file, I always get this error: ! Hello everyone! My question is as in subject: how to learn ConTeXt? And another ones: How to install ConTeXt? Manually or from, e.g., TeXlive? I would like to typeset in Antykwa Torunska or Antykwa Poltawskiego. Greek font in Footnote problem

I am having trouble getting Greek in footnote environment. The Greek appears as it should in the text body, but in a footnote all I get is the input. In short, ConTeXt \footnote seems to ignore the \localgreek command. I attach a brief test file that should produce the problem as well as the input file defining the Greek font in the first place. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. By the way, there is no message in the log file to the effect that the Greek font is unavailable at a given font size. And I am using ConTeXt ver: 2004.10.26 fmt: 2005.1.3. There's a wonderful tutorial on drawing 3D graphics in PostScript on http://www.math.ubc.ca/~cass/graphics/manual/, specifically http://www.math.ubc.ca/~cass/graphics/manual/code/doughnut.eps as an example. And there's a detailed description on shading in PostScript in http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/ps/PLRM.pdf, page 259 (I attached an example and have some more on computer if anyone is interested; I downloaded them from Adobe, but don't know the URL any more) or on shading in PDF in http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/pdf/PDFReference16.pdf, page 272. (They're basically the same.) In metapost, "perfect" spheres can be drawn, like on http://www.gnu.org/software/3dldf/cdsmpls.html. But how can I add colour? Even if it would be too tricky to add colour and proper shading on the sphere - Is there any possibility to use advanced shading techiques described in PLRM inside metapost/metaplay for the most simple cases, say, like in the attached example? Metaplay allows circular and gradient shading and no others. I don't mind if I had to hard-code the shading. PSTricks allows some more advanced shading techniques and even direct PostScript code integration (with \special I think). Is anything similar possible in metapost/play? The spheres drawn directly in PostScript as in the examples above still have straight lines (well, I agree that with some mathematics it would be possible to draw them with proper splines as well). french hyphenation after l-apostrophe doesn't work

Hi, when, in a french project, the line ends with e.g. l'int\'{e}r^{e}t then context doesn't hyphenate "l'interet" and the line gets stretched. (If I wouldn't have the l-apostroph construction then the word is hyphenated "in-teret", so its hyphenation is know to TeX.) But for I have a lot of this "l-apostroph" constructions at line endings in my document it is impossible to type individually \- at the best breaking points (here after "in-"). I need to have a global option that re-activates the hyphenation even if the word starts with l-apostroph. When I typeset the apostrophe like a slash: l|'|int\'{e}r^{e}t then the line gets broken, but after "l'" and I was told this is wrong in french. So what else could be done to automatically break int\'{e}r^{e}t again but *not* after l' ? Thank you for any help, Steffen

ConTeXt tool for enabling comments in PDF ?

Hi, in the MacOSX-TeX-list (mainly on LaTeX) I just read a discussion on "Comments in PDF" (by AcrobatReader7). Do we have a ConTeXt tool which can enable users of e.g. AdobeReader 7 to add comments to PDF files ? Or is it true that this "comments enabled flag" can only be set for PDFs generated by Acrobat -- and only by the original author? Framed text question

Hi, I'm new to Context, so hopefully this isn't a completely obvious question, but I was wondering whether it was possible to have framed text split across a page. In this particular case, I have a code sample that I want to be framed and have a different background color than the rest of the text, so I have it surrounded by \startframedtext and \stopframedtext. Is it possible to use \splitfloat to split this if the code sample is too large to fit on a single page? If so, what would be the syntax? If not, is there another mechanism? Thanks for any help! Hi, The next release will -apart from bug fixes and a few new things as well as the bib module- also miss a few things: the interface setup files, we now definitely move to the xml variants; as a result, texshow has been swapped for taco's texshow which handles the xml files directly; this is all part of a cleanup. The alpha relese already has these changes. I have found the following somewhere in the documentation. \button{...}[the chapter on whatever] \button{...}[otherdoc::some topic] \button{...}[previouspage] \button{...}[PreviousJump] I have tried them : all run very well except \button{...}[otherdoc::some topic] How can I replace some topic to indicate a chapter in otherdoc or a page ? I have not tested it, but it seems to use a similar language to MetaPost (but with 3D coordinates) and generates real MetaPost. http://www.gnu.org/software/3dldf/ | My primary purpose in writing 3DLDF was to make it possible to use MetaPost for | three-dimensional drawing. After the last update ConTeXt has problems with fonts unter miktex. from the log: [1.1{original-empty.map}{texnansiOSFSC-adobe-cronospro.map Warning: pdfetex (file texnansiOSFSC-adobe-cronospro.map): invalid entry for `texnansiOSFSC-raw-CronosPro-Bold': invalid font file name the entry in the map-file: texnansiOSFSC-raw-CronosPro-Bold 4 < CronosPro-Bold.pfb texnansiOSFSC.enc Before update all worked fine. Nothing has changed. The .enc files are under fonts/enc and in the miktex.ini the path is set on it (under pdfetex). ConTeXt/pdfetex don't find any font file (but under LaTeX all is o.k.). I red that there are have to changed any variables, but I don't know how I have to do this under miktex (miktex.ini looks well for paths). Why it doesn't work now? Thanks in advance, Matthias

\godown to an absolute position

Hello. I have a style request that I haven't come across before and don't know how to handle in ConTeXt. I need the first line of text following a chapter title to always start 15 picas from the top edge of the text area. In other words, no matter how little space the title takes up, the first line after it should always start at the same vertical point. Something like -- \chapter{Chapter title} \godown[to=15pc] Start of the text of the chapter... -- would be ideal, but of course \godown starts from the current point and doesn't offer a to= option! I'm not sure that layers are the answer because as soon as I have moved down I'm into the running text of the chapter. Can anyone help? Thanks very much. Duncan

XML question regarding special characters

Hi! I'm trying to design a "universal" markup that will be easy to convert both to PDF and HTML. I've come to code and equations. I don't want to use MathML and I want to output (and use in my documents!) verbatim TeX code of equations to HTML. What worries me is the following: I want to be able to write and run through Context XML processing: <formula label="fm:whatever> x^{2} < y </formula> or, for typesetting computer programs: <code> if((x&y) >= 3) { do_something(); } </code> (this would translate to \starttyping\stoptyping) How do I define XML environments that can handle XML special characters (<>&, etc., I don't know all of them..) gracefully? (i.e. so that I don't have to type <code> if((x&y) >= 3) </code> and similar for formulas) Thanks!
