setting up even and odd pages

I'm confused on setting up even and odd pages. If I wanted to set up a chapter with the first page one way, and even and odd pages another way, how do I do this? Say the first page must start on an odd page. The right margin will be 1 inch. Now the each succeeding left (or even-numbered) page will have a left margin of 1 inch. The right margin (the inner part if it were in a book) should be 1/2 inch. For the right (odd-numbered page), the left margin (the inner part if it were a book) should be 1/2 inch, while the right, outer margin should be 1 inch. TeX run : 8 (vs. 2 ?)

Hi, a ConTeXt document that is typeset under WinXP needs 2 runs. The same document (and the same typescript, map files, font files) when typeset under OSX (Gerbens i-installer used) needs 8 runs!!! Each time it is typeset! For the result looks the same I assume it's a kind of bug. Anybody knows what to do? Thank you, Steffen

shortcut to TOC page from any page

ConTeXt and DocBook - beginner's questions

Hello everyone, I am new to ConTeXt (I've been tempted to try it out because of a message by Sebastian Rahtz, posted on TEI-L). I admit that so far I have been able to get through only the main manual, but I am very curious about some things and therefore I would really appreciate it if you could answer my questions: 1. I am interested in authoring in XML and than typesetting in ConTeXt. Are there any preferences towards using some particular markup language for typesetting in ConTeXt? Is e.g. using DocBook more preferable that using TEI--from the point of view of typesetting in ConTeXt, of course. 2. Are there any generic tools available (stylesheets etc.) for typesetting DocBook/TEI or does one have to come up with his own stylesheets? I assume that the latter is necessary if one wants to get exactly the layout he wants, but maybe there are some basic stylesheets that one can use as a base for his own ones? 3. Also, I have a more general question -- for some (short) period of time I have been reading both TEI-L and NTG-CONTEXT, all the issues related to typesetting documents marked up in XML are very confusing. Do you know any good manual/tutorial concerned with these issues that I could use a starting point for my studies on the subject? Thank you in advance- -Radek Moszczynski

Problem with \placefigure before \startcolumns

Hi, I have a problem, when I place a graphic on a page, start columns, and use a \chapter in that column. The following code demonstrates it. I get the space needed for the graphic in the column, but the graphic is already placed above the \startcolumns. Hi, Attached is an xml file that describes the hyphenation pattern files. I'd appreciate checking (some records are incomplete). I'd also like to add (for each language) a couple of tricky hyphenatable words [for testing]. Preferable in utf-8 encoding. XML and context

I've been looking over some articles published on context and XML, nameely http://www.pragma-ade.com/show-mag-9.htm. According to this article, there is a Relax schema for an XML version of context. The namespace is 'http://www.pragma-ade.com/rlg/foxet.rng'. This implies that the Relax schema can only be used if using FO, or? I was wondering if could directly convert to the XML at the namespace above and then process the resulting document with context. This would be easier than using the mapping method. Was this problem solved? If not, the problem may be in not loading a map file; typescripts take care of this. btw, one you see the light, typescripts are not that hard, see examples in wiki, Bill M's font page and Adam L's myways. Since I don't want to use a body font size of 12pt in all of my documents, only to be able to use German umlaut characters, any hints to what I'm doing wrong here would be appreciated very much. texfont problem on windows

I'm using the minimal windows installation of ConTeXt, texsync'ed today. The vptovf.exe program as used by the texfont script seems to have a version mismatch. It throws an error saying that it can't find tl80kpse.dll. In fact the version in the minimal tree is tl90kpse.dll. This means that texfont can't install new fonts, since no virtual font files are created. I'm sure I can work around this either by updating my local vptovf.exe or finding the relevant dll on the web somewhere, but it should probably be fixed in the tree if possible. Thanks! Duncan

m-letter stationary

Dear Contexers, I have succeeded in creating letters on my pdf stationary-1. Beautiful. Now I want to print the second and following pages on paper with on a slightly different stationary (stationary-2), as is costumary. Does anyone how to set this up? (The example on the wiki is too complicated for me. I sticked to sample files from Hans Hagen, which makes it possible to use an xml address database.) The present set up for the background is given below. Paper size & page arranging

The command \setuplayout[location=middle,scale=.5] scales the document correctly, but if I use \setuparranging[2*2] for example, the original scaling is broken. What effect exactly does 'scale=...' in \definepapersize have? There must surely exist a very simple and elegant solution to typeset usual A4 pages scaled down to A5, so that two pages are placed on one in lanscape mode, like in: 1. page (A4 landscape with two A4 pages scaled to A5) *---*---* | | | | 1 | 2 | | | | *---*---* 2. page *---*---* | | | | 3 | 4 | | | | *---*---* ... or that "any" page number (n*n or 2n*n in landscape mode, maybe some other number if page proportions are different; and some blank space is left on the borders) is placed on one page, like in (for 6*3): *--*--*--*--*--*--* | 1| 2| 3| 4| 5| 6| *--*--*--*--*--*--* | 7| 8| 9|10|11|12| *--*--*--*--*--*--* |13|14|15|16|17|18| *--*--*--*--*--*--* \setuparranging[...] does the job, but it is only suitable if someone really wants to make a booklet out of it and one has to supply "original" page sizes (for example A6 to be printed as 2*4 on A4). arabtex support

there is a thread a while back about this from R. Elmers. search contextgarden.net for detail. I am using context 2005.31.1 and arabtex 3.11m on MacOSX , bas-ed on gwTeX. I did play around this and found a few interesting things. The result is simply wonderful. \placecontent and \section can appear in arabic! 1) I rename font-arb.tex to m-arabtex.tex and \usemodule[arabtex]. it works. ( as to why it works and was it OK to do it, I cannot explain ) 2) need to add at top of document , ( probably any font definition ) font-arb.tex did mention something about font macro. \usetypescript[postscript] \switchtotypeface[postscript] if you did not, the body text will appear in \em . 3) there is some spurious arabic text, align left. I believe there is bug in \startarabic ... \stoparabic code. my request; can Hans look over font-arb.tex, see if there need some updating/changes. It was written way back in 1999. can font-arb be turn into a module? My reason; I am hoping to write a paper using jawi script, which is supported by arabtex. Can't install ConTeXt

I've just dowloaded the ConTeXt form the website http://www.pragma-ade.com/download-1.htm I've downloaded both the "the main CONTEXT distribution" as well as "the minimal CONTEXT distribution (linux)" Both distributions give me a bunch of directories and scrits, but no instructions on where to put what. With the linux distrubtion, I was given a setuptex script. I ran this, and got nothing. I opend this script and uncommented the following lines and put them at the bottom of the script: # mktexlsr # texexec --make --alone I seemed to get a successful make, but then when I ran texecec I got the following message: This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.14159-1.00b-pretest-20020211-HO20020731-2.1 (Web2C 7.3.7) kpathsea: Running mktexfmt cont-en.efmt fmtutil: no info for format `cont-en'. Sorry, I can't find the format `cont-en.efmt'; will try `context.efmt'. kpathsea: Running mktexfmt context.efmt fmtutil: no info for format `context'. I can't find the format file `context.efmt'! I got the same exact message when I ran perl texecec.pl with the main CONTEXT distribution. I already have a working distribution of TeX on my system. Hello, could someone help me please with the following little macro? Every line in the table should be different, but all are as the last one. I've tried a lot with commands like \expanded{} or \expandafter etc, but without results... Unconventional page number placement

If there is a documented way to do what I want, feel free to just give me a hint as to where it is documented; or if there is no way to do it without deep hackery, please just let me know that. Thanks! %% I am creating a layout for electronic books in which all the body text is in a single, fairly narrow column, with minimal space at the top and bottom of each page. I would like to place page numbers in the left margin, aligned with the bottom of the text, and the running heads (if any) also in the left margin, aligned with the top of the text. Is there a way to do this in ConTeXt? I can see that the standard page numbering and header commands don't support this kind of placement. I can come very close to the desired effect with the following: * Place the page numbers in the margin area of the footer, e.g.: \setuppagenumbering [...,location=inleft] * Place the header text in the margin area of the header, e.g.: \setupheadertext [margin] [section] [] * Use negative dimensions to cause the header and footer to overlap the text area, e.g.: \setuplayout [...,headerdistance=-0.35in,footerdistance=-0.5in] As I said, this comes very close to the desired effect, but it seems impossible to correctly align the header text and page numbers with the main text. Also, the header texts are mostly too long to fit on a single line in the margin, and I have not found a way to induce line wrapping. Code to product several versions PDF with different fonts

Which version is best for MSWindows users.?

I am writing some e-books on free software. I am recommending TeX (of course) and Context instead of LaTeX. The vast majority of my readers will be using some flavor of MSWindows. Unfortunately there have been problems in synchronizing Context releases and Miktex releases, in re. hyphenation and fonts in general. I need to recommend a download package for readers who will be newcomers to the world of TeX. Which is the safest pointer? I see Miktex as a possibility but also the stripped versions of the TeX distribution maintained on the Context site. So how would you start an absolute newbie to e.g., Context and pdfetex? Where would you point them for their first download? -- John Culleton

Navigation of pragma-ade.nl site.

I had problems recently navigating the pragma-ade site. I use Slackware Linux but I also have Win 2000. Unfortunately the browsers haven't kept up with pdf navigation of sites, except for Internet Explorer. The others I tested, Konqueror, Opera, Mozilla, Lynx etc. cannot navigate the site because they use external plugins for interpreting pdf code, and the environment for those interpreters is local to my computer and not to pragma-ade.nl. (Lynx of course doesn't have pdf facilities at all.) It is possible to navigate through many Context pdf pages using the forward and back buttons as suggested by Hans but this facility is not universal. Formerly the pages gave a choice between html navigation and pdf navigation. If it is not feasible to restore this dual pattern then perhaps we need to find another solution. Even Windows user often do not want to use IE on line because of security reasons. And of course many present/potential Context users may have Linux or OS X as their base systems. If a change is made in this direction I would be happy to run my various browsers against the Pragma site to make sure everything works as expected. -- John Culleton

This should be simple, but my brain is currently clogged from reading too many ConTeXt manuals, so please help! I’m trying to make a simple format that I’ve used elsewhere. The first part of each item (a kind of \head) is not indented, but the remaining paragraph(s) of that item are. For example: LONG_UGLY_STRING_LIKE_THIS A few sentences, indented somewhat from the left margin, that relate to the long ugly string above. The indentation allows the reader to scan the ugly strings (which might well be in alphabetical order. Several questions about format generation

Hi all, in the diverse documentation about ConTeXt installation I find the instruction "texexec --make ... --language ..." for generating format files. Several questions arise: 1. What is the consequence of selecting specific languages after the --make option? Have the generated formats the same functionality, i.e. do they differ only in the user interface? In particular, do the different formats have the same hyphenation capabilities? 2. In the "How to install ConTeXt" manual I read that the "nl"-format is needed for some postprocessing features built in texexec. Is this still valid? The TeXLive distribution of 2004 contains only the cont-en.fmt file. 3. Is using the --language xy option equivalent to the using the \mainlanguage[xy] macro? 4. Choosing an encoding - what are the consequences?

Hi all! I am on the burdensome path to understanding font handling in ConText. Now I wonder what the consequences are with choosing certain encodings. For example if I choose "8a" encoding (called "Adobe standard encoding"): 1. There are lots of empty slots in this encoding. What does ConText do if a symbol that is to be typeset is not contained in an encoding? 2. Can I ommit the 8a encoding in map files when PDF documents are generated (because it is the Adobe standard encoding)? 3. Somewhere I read that "texnansi" is a preferred encoding. Why? Framed text splitting over pages

Hi, I'd like to split some source code over a couple of pages. I'd like it to have distinct background and rounded frame around. Search on google comes up with an email from Hans answering some fellow wanting the same thing, but the technique used was textbackgrounds which doesn't give me the frame, just the background. Is there any way to tickle framed+splitfloat or any other macro to achieve what I want? Thanks in advance! /S

My last question! :-) I would like to have the various ‘parts’ of a book marked with black rectangles at the right side of each page, visible when the reader flips through the pages. I googled successfully to find ‘fancyhdr’, but that’s a LaTeX package, so I don’t think it will work in ConTeXt. If it’s not too difficult in ConTeXt, can anyone share the secret? thanks!

Typesetting products and components

Is it possible to determine if texexec is being run on a product or a component and have optional processing similar to different modes? I have a large project comprising quarterly reports and technical notes. Essentially, I have the following structure: project = MyProject |- product = Reports |- component1 = year2005, chapters 1-n |- component1 = year2006, chapters 1-n ... |- product = TechNotes |- component1 = note1, sections 1-n |- component1 = note2, sections 1-n ... ... I would like to be able to typeset a component differently depending on whether it is passed directly to texexec or whether I am processing the complete product. For instance, in each technical note, I would like a title page, table of contents, list of abreviations, and list of references generated if I typeset the component separately. Conversely, when processing the product TechNotes I want a master table of contents, list of abbreviations and list of references generated for the set of components. Is it appropriate to want to do this or have I misunderstood the role of projects, products and components entirely. Cheers, Randall

Hi, In order to get rid of the pattern problems (no consistency in internals, funny names, changing locations, changing names, etc) I decided to provide the option to use context 'specific' pattern files, although ... the pattern files have become quite generic and encoding independent. For those willing to test, i uploaded a new alpha version. In order to use the new method you need to generate the pattern files in a path known to tex. ctxtools --patterns all (or a language code instead) texexec --make --all The pattern files use symbolic names instead of encoding specific characters or tex commands. Because pattern files are often encoding specific, loading a pattern file multiple times could be tricky. The generated files can be loaded for any encoding that provides the named glyphs (i.e. maps onto numbers). [As a joke, i also provide the option to let those pattern files be coded in xml.] In principle, the files can be used in e.g. plain tex as well, for more details see the new (preliminary) manual mpattern.pdf Btw, I still have to do the cyrillic languages. if you think that for your language a multiple encodings should be preloaded ... let me know. Why uses Context 8r encoding used instead of the specified ec encoding?

Yet, somewhere behind the scenes the ec-encoded font uhvr8t is mapped into the 8r-encoded font uhvr8r. Can someone reveal this deep secret? Page numbers in margin?

Hello, all-- I am creating a layout for electronic books in which all the body text is in a single, fairly narrow column, with minimal space at the top and bottom of each page. I would like to place page numbers in the left margin, aligned with the bottom of the text, and the running heads (if any) also in the left margin, aligned with the top of the text. Is there a way to do this in ConTeXt? I can see that the standard page numbering and header commands don't support this kind of placement. I can come very close to the desired effect with the following: * Place the page numbers in the margin area of the footer, e.g.: \setuppagenumbering [...,location=inleft] * Place the header text in the margin area of the header, e.g.: \setupheadertext [margin] [section] [] * Use negative dimensions to cause the header and footer to overlap the text area, e.g.: \setuplayout [...,headerdistance=-0.35in,footerdistance=-0.5in] As I said, this comes very close to the desired effect, but it seems impossible to align the header text and page numbers with the main text. Also, the header texts are mostly too long to fit on a single line in the margin, and I have not found a way to induce line wrapping.
