Ok, I think I have come closer to understanding the \definestyle problem. The problem (bug?) is in \definetypeface. If we uncomment the last two options in \definetypeface, then \mv will also work. Why do predefined switches like \tf work with 4 options while user-defined style options fail? Is this a bug or feature (seems inconsistent)? natural tables flaw: extra space

struggle for booktabs

Hi again, since I often need row and column spanning, I have tried to use natural tables to produce good looking tables (booktabs-like, as discussed in the recent thread). I think it will be possible to achieve what I want, but I have some open points. For those interested, I have attached a file showing what I have devised to get the job done. The code is not very elegant, and the parameters controlling spacing and rule thickness are just for testing. But the main idea becomes clear: I use dummy rows with a height determined by rule thickness and vertical separation. The rules are drawn by metapost. Any comments and suggestions are very welcome. Now, my questions/remarks: - How to control spacing between table rows and columns? I can't simply set the offset, since I must be able to set vertical and horizontal spacing independently. - To have each cell entry centered horizontally and vertically, I have to say \setupTABLE[row][each][align={middle,lohi}]. I think it should also be possible to do this via \setupTABLE[align={middle,lohi}] which currently has no effect. - I think I will come to the point where I want to define macros of my own wich can take a key=value list of arguments with the ability to set defaults using a setup command. Can someone give me a pointer where to look in order to learn how this is done? Thanks for your help and comments, Eckhart

Left + right justification at once.

Hi all, Am using \vbox{\hsize8cm text} to typeset my document with blocks of text. This makes a left and right justification of the text, but most of the time it does work alright and i get a ragged right text. What do i have to do in order to avoid this and get my text justified at both sides ? Thanks for any help. Dirar

controlling space between paragraphs in list

According to the big ConTeXt manual, one should use \head for an item in a list with more than one paragraph: \startitemize \head first paragarph...\par second paragraph... \stopitemize Is there a way to control the amount of space *between* head paragraph that are part of the head? I know how to control the space between items, but what if you want a different space between the paragraphs in an item. (This is not so unusual a desire; you might want to less space to make things tighter.) Right now, I can do this: \setupwhitespace[8pt] \startitemize \item first paragarph...\par second paragraph... \stopitemize But then ConTeXt might not take care of the paragraphs nicely when breaking between pages. Textfont in math-formulas?

Hi There, I have a little problem with fonts in my document. I use the cm sans serif font in my text and want to have this in the tex-formulas to, but it worked not for me. Simple example: \enableregime[utf] \setupoutput[pdf] \mainlanguage[de] \language[de] \setuppapersize[A4] \setupbodyfont[ss] \starttext Some text, we can read it without serifs. But the formula: $ \frac{1}{x-2} $ is not in the same font. \stoptext BTW is there another way to have units like g/(cm^3) as to set them as tex-formula. I dont no if the module units do such things. customizing footnote numbers

Is there a way to manually set the number of a footnote rather than letting ConTeXt determining it? Something that works in the same way as \page[25]? For example, I might want to start footnote numbering at 1 at each chapter, *but I won't be using traditional ConTeXt divisions.* I've been searching the web and it seems that LaTeX has a way to reset counters, but I can't get this to work in ConTeXt. hi sorry for the off topic question, but perhaps there is someone here who can help me. i need a html page to bee converted into pdf and then to bee printed out (on a windows machine) without even open the acrobat reader (in the foreground). I think with dde this should be possible (right?). i searched some acrobat dde specifications on the net, but I didn't found anything useful, so is there a location to download them? if possible i plan to implement oll that stuff with python ... thanks for help severin

Charts

Hello, I am using the charts module as part of context to produce flowcharts and I am having problems when the flowchart goes above a page in that I can't get the system to automatically split the chart. I have the following setup commands in my context file \usemodule[chart] \setupFLOWcharts[maxwidth=\textwidth, nx=4] \setupFLOWsplit[ny=9, before=, after=\page] based upon the manual. I then use the command \FLOWcharts [bigchart] later in the document and the flowchart does not split, instead it runs off the bottom of the page. I have also tried using \splitfloat with no success either. spacing of values and units & ^{-2}

Hi, concerning m-units, it would be nice to configure whether to use a full space or a thinspace between a number and its unit. Furthermore, some space is needed between adjectant units like in 1\Meter\Inverse\Second. I know there are some old threads concerning this topic, initiated by me. But have there been any recent changes to the module, or are such changes planned? Btw: How to get a power to the minus 2? Missing { inserted. <to be read again> \egroup l.5 \stopcombination ? ! hyphenation within columnsets with background

Hi, I am preparing a rather large text, completely set in 3 columns, which has lots of text with grey backgrounds. During the preparation of this text, some questions came up : 1 - At first I put a grey background to my texts defining the following macros (they are used within columnsets): ===================================================================== %start setting the text with a light grey background \def\startlightgreybox{\setupframedtexts[frame=off, background=color, backgroundcolor=lightgrey, width=broad] \startframedtext {\bf Some frame title}} %stop setting the text with a light grey background \def\stoplightgreybox{\stopframedtext} ===================================================================== After a while, and to see what difference there was between both, I redefined both macros as : ======================================================================= = %start setting the text with a light grey background \def\startlightgreybox{\setupbackground[background=color, backgroundcolor=lightgrey] \startbackground {\bf Some frame title}} %stop setting the text with a light grey background \def\stoplightgreybox{\stopbackground} ======================================================================= == And to my surprise, I saw, that hyphenation works clearly better when my backgrounds are defined with the second set of macros, which is of course good news, especially when using 3 columns, but : is there an explanation for this behaviour ? 2 - Another problem I have with those backgrounds is the following : they seem to work well when the text spreads over several columns/pages, as long as I don't force a 'next column' in the text. I had originally put up a web article on page layout, ConTeXt, and XML. As I said in my original email, the location of that webpage was only temporary. Just glancing over the pages, I see many typos. In a similar matter, I had originally started this documentation on the wikki. Can I now remove those pages? (I realize I probably don't need permisssion, but I don't want to remove a page and then have the wikki administrator put it back up.) The page on the wikki is out of date and incorrect in many instances. Also, someone on this email list was nice enough to include a link to the yahoo page. Dear gang, I found a TeXLive utility, getafm, that generates an afm file from a pfb file. I need to generate a large number of afms, but I'm having difficulty getting this utility to work: getafm <myfont.pfb> > <myfont>.afm works fine, but getafm *.pfb > *.afm does not. There does not appear to be any help info for getafm either; getafm -h[--help] actually generates an on-screen afm listing(?) Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can do this? Hello, I am wondering if anyone knows of a similar macro in CoNTeXt to the LaTeX \Fixme package <http://www.tug.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/fixme.html>. What fixme allowed me to do that I have yet to figure out in context is make inline notes "\fxnote" or marks "\fxwarning" "\fxerror" that would then in draft mode print either margin or footnotes where the change was needed. It was very handy when, as an editor, wanting to make quick comments in proofing. Fixme also prints an index of all the fixmes. Any ideas? Hallo, my ConTeXt ignore btex-etex command. It works as the btex-etex command is empty. No text on output. Simple example: \starttext \startuseMPgraphic{test} picture p; p := btex TEST etex scaled 5cm; draw p; \stopuseMPgraphic \useMPgraphic{test} \stoptext On output is only page number. In the 'mpgraph.mp' is (if a skip some definitions): ResetTextAreas ; SaveTextAreas ; ResetTextAreas ; if unknown context_core : input mp-core.mp ; fi ; local_multi_par_area:=false; ;; verbatimtex \global \loadfontfileoncetrue etex; let mprunend = end ; beginfig(1); picture p; p := btex TEST etex scaled 5cm; draw p; endfig; let end = mprunend ; end. If a extract a part with beginfig(1); picture p; p := btex TEST etex; draw p; endfig; end. and proccess it with mpost it works good. My ConTeXt comes from Fedora Core 3 distribution. Switching fonts (or font size) in columnsets

Hello, With the example attached at the end of the mail (and that can be try on http://live.contextgarden.net) the page on which the font change occurs (be it the size or a new font) is moved up and the page is shorter... Is there a way to say that some text (here the items) are not to be aligned on the grid because they are smaller (or bigger)? Thanks! Hi all, Following Hans instructions from a previous mail, am trying to setup context on a new machine without installing any distribution. I would like to use the minimal context tree. Here is the instructions from a previous post: an option is (assuming that you have rsync running): c: cd \ mkdir mytex rsync -r -v www.pragma-pod.com::mswin mytex cd mytex setuptex texexec --make --alone --all and voila you have a running system (like i have) (updating is then also rather efficient) c:\mytex\setuptex c:\mytex can then be used any time. rsync www.pragma-pod.com:: I have done all of this but when i type texexec nothing happeneds. Anything missing out there ? Thanks for your help.

Hi, Thank Idris Samawi Hamid and Geert for their help on clarifying this problem. Today I saw a solution from a Chinese TeXer, and now I understand why the Type1 fonts cannot be recognized. To make ConTeXt support Chinese, I maintain a file named tex\contex\user\cont-sys.tex, which is a modifed copy of texmf\tex\context\user\cont-sys.rme. In this file, there are the following codes: ....... \resetmapfiles \donefalse \ifx\pdftexversion\undefined \else \ifnum\number\pdftexversion>119 \donetrue \fi \fi \ifdone \loadmapfile[original-base.map] \loadmapfile[original-ams-base.map] \loadmapfile[original-public-lm.map] \else \loadmapfile[original-base.map] \loadmapfile[texnansi-base.map] \loadmapfile[ec-base.map] \loadmapfile[qx-base.map] \loadmapfile[t5-base.map] %loadmapfile[il2-base.map] %loadmapfile[pl0-base.map] \loadmapfile[8r-base.map] \loadmapfile[original-ams-base.map] \loadmapfile[original-ams-euler.map] \loadmapfile[original-public-lm.map] \loadmapfile[texnansi-public-lm.map] \loadmapfile[ec-public-lm.map] \loadmapfile[qx-public-lm.map] \loadmapfile[t5-public-lm.map] \loadmapfile[pl0-public-lm.map] \loadmapfile[il2-public-lm.map] \fi ....... These codes let ConTeXt load the map files for pdftex, so psfonts.map is omitted by ConTeXt. As a result, we have two solutions to overcome this problem: 1. comment all the above codes, and let ConTeXt to read font maps via pdftex; 2. add a line "\loadmapfile[xxx.map]" to explicitly load the required map, just as we should do in the beginning of a tex file (Geert's solution).
