Dear all, I want to use German double quotes for my text but noticed that the beginning double quotation sign/glyph is somewhat corrupt: there is a bigger distance between the two signs than is with the ending double quote (which are typographically correct). To make this a bit clearer, I have appended to this email an examle. If you look very carfully you can see this effect already in the Context Manual, chapter 10.8 page 198 (\lowerleftdoubleninequote). The Code of the appended pdf is the following: \mainlanguage [de] rules, quote signs etc. \starttext Dies ist ein \quotation{Test}. \stoptext Has anybody noticed this error, or does anybody know a solution? It gives: \cap -> ABCABCÅÄÖÅÄÖ (in \tfx size), just as expected \uppercased -> ABCABCåäöÅÄÖ (ABC's in \tfx, rest untouched) \WORD -> ABCABCÅÄÖxxx (where xxx's are gibberish) \uppercase -> ABCABCÅÄÖxxx The plain TeX \uppercase seems to be known for its nasty behaviour with anything else than US characters. \WORD seems to be a thin wrapper around it, so similar behaviour is to be expected. \uppercased makes interesting things, as it does uppercase the abc's well but does not touch the accented characters in any way. Only \cap seems to do exactly what it should. --- Things become even stranger, when the regime is switched to UTF-8. Then \WORD and \uppercase give some errors and refuse to compile. \uppercased and \cap work as described above. --- As \uppercase is a plain TeX macro, fixing it is not a good choice, especially because it is known to be bad. However, if \WORD could be built on \cap but without the font size changing, it would work fine. The odd behaviour of \uppercased (and the reasons to use it instead of the other choices) remains unclear to me. - Ville

There are several parameters which can be used: style textstyle textcommand numberstyle numbercommand This is how I understand those (please, correct me when I am wrong). Let us assume we have a chapter heading saying "Chapter 1. Title" in the following examples: style=\bf -> {\bf Chapter 1.}{\bf Title} textstyle=\bf -> {Chapter 1.}{\bf Title} numberstyle=\bf -> {\bf Chapter 1.}{\bf Title} If I got it right this far, then I think I get these. The relevant parts of the heading are prepended with the given commands (whatever they then may be). But this mechanism does work only with the commands which change the style from that point onwards (e.g., \it, \tfx). What about the commands which take the text as a parameter (such as \cap{text})? And what are textcommand and numbercommand? I tried playing a bit with them. For example, \it or \bf can be put either as textstyle=\it or textcommand=\it. On the other hand, the \uppercase can be used only with textstyle. So, there is a difference as the name suggests (my initial guess was that the difference is exactly what I ask above, but doesn't seem to be so). Where on Earth is \uppercase explained? I tried looking for it in the manual -- in vain. I found some references to \uppercased which seems to be another beast. Thank you for your patience. Supress chapter number in sections

I've fiddled with almost every parameter in sethead but cannot seem to find the correct one. I'd like to suppress the chapter numbers in a relatively large document such that numbering of sections, tables, figures and equations begins at 1 instead of 1.1. Is there a simple way to do this? Hi, I've felt into same pb's trying to compile s-pre-61.tex directly from it's original source. As far I can see (just to the surface of the screen in fact) it's related to a specific font installed at Pragma, not available for everyone as is. if I replace or uncomment : \usetypescriptfile[type-ghz] \definetypeface[mainface][ss][sans][optima-nova][default][encoding=\defaultencoding] \setupbodyfont[mainface,ss,18pt] and put such general font switch like : \usetypescript [modern][\defaultencoding] \setupbodyfont[modern,ss,11pt] it compile without pbs. Changing Title Font in \completecontent

Is there a way to change the title font being used for a table of contents page being displayed by \completecontent? My original thought was to use the same layout as a regular chapter: \chapter{Table of Contents} \placecontents but after reading the manuals a few times, I realized this was doomed to fail. Using \completecontent, I'd like to be able to have 'Contents' or 'Table of Contents' written with my standard \setuphead[chapter] definition. As it stands, \completecontent generates a single roman 'Contents' at the top of the page while all my other titles are offset in position, aligned right, and in small caps... Any ideas? Capitalized headings

I've been trying to make capitalized (uppercase) headings with little success. I'd like to have the titles simply capitalized as with \cap or \WORD. A minimal example: --- \setuphead[title][style=WORD] \starttext \title{This is a title} The title should be \cap{capitalized} or \WORD{capitalized}. \stoptext --- What should I give as the style? I have tried the following: style=WORD -> no effect style=Caps -> no effect style=uppercased -> no effect style=CAP -> no effect style=Cap -> no effect style=cap -> error style=kap -> error style=smallcaps -> small caps (when the font supports) It is interesting to get an error message for the "style=cap", because this is one of the listed options in the definition of \setuphead in the manual. My understanding is that the following code should produce two chapter pages with a page number at the top, followed by an index page without a page number. That is not what happens. Am I correct that this is a bug? I'd like to reset the page number with each chapter and prepend the chapter number to the page number. Something like Chapter One Foo 1-1 Bar 1-2 Chapter Two Baz 2-1 Qux 2-3 Now here's where it gets complicated: I also need to generate an index using this same numbering. Index B Bar 1-2,2-1 Q Qux 1-1,2-3 I've played with many different approaches and can achieve 85% functionality, but generating the index is turning out to be killer. Any suggestions? Two hyphens do not give en dash

I installed a new font (Gentium, TrueType). Everything went relatively smoothly except for one thing: When I type -- I really get two hyphens instead of the expected en dash. I have been able to work around this by using UTF regime and typing the en dash into the source file. However, it would be easier to use -- and ---. What should I do? (Yeah, I know, forget it and be happy that the UTF works :) TIA, - Ville

By a very quick look at the sources, it looks for the following: TEXMFMAIN TEXMFLOCAL TEXMFEXTRA TEXMFFONTS It does not look for TEXMFTE, but by specifying the switch --rootlist, it can be given a list of trees, which it then browses through. Ok, it might be useful to add a few here, such as TEXMFTE (for us gwTeX users), but maybe that's an endless road. But the real problem is really in a font installation script which explicitly overrides the default settings and gives a wrong tree. --- The problem is easy to pinpoint into type-tfm.dat. Unfortunately, just removing the explicit definitions does not seem to solve the problem. The non-standard root seems to be difficult to be told to the system. For encodings, texfont.pl can be force-fed a value which is passed to all scripts in a batch file (using a special --en=? switch). However, no such mechanism exists for other parameters (such as the --ro). Tweaking the TEXMFFONTS to point to TEXMFTE is one possibility, but then the fonts will also be installed into TEXMFFONTS instead of TEXMFLOCAL. Ideally, it would be nice to be able to tell the script that the source fonts are in TEXMFWHATEVER and they are going into TEXMFSOMETHINGELSE. I haven't been able to figure out how to achieve that without tailoring the batch file. - Ville

TEXMFMAIN problem in gwTeX (font installation)

I have spent some very interesting time trying to install the TeXlive fonts by using texfont type-tmf.dat. What happened was that a lot of complaints about "unknown subpath ../afm/public/urw" were given even though the path should have been there. This is a known problem, has been on several mailing lists, as well. After a lot of thinking it became clear that texfont was really unable to find any font files. By browsing through the texfont.pl, the reason became evident: In gwTeX the root variables are: TEXMFMAIN = /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf TEXMFTE = /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex The problem here is that all the TeXlive fonts (and almost everthing else) is really in the TEXMFTE tree. My quick'n'dirty was to make new file type-tmf-gwtex.dat by replacing all occurrences of TEXMFMAIN by TEXMFTE. Running that one in batch mode works fine. Problem solved -- this time. But the solution is not a beautiful one. Could someone suggest something cleaner? Or has this been solved already (I tried googling after the answer without success)? - Ville

ConTeXt oddities

Dear fellow-ConTeXters, working with Context I noticed some small, strange behaviours: 1. I arranged pages in the following way: \definepapersize[myCustomLayout][width=12cm, height=19cm] \setuppapersize[myCustomLayout][A4,landscape] \setuparranging[2SIDE] now, when I use \showsetups I get the following values: paperhight: 18.9973cm paperwidth: 11.99829cm (happens with the rest of layout-definitions as well) well, sure enough nobody will see the difference in print... but nevertheless a bit annoying if you wanted to show the result of \showsetups to your clients (maybe the values are converted from cm to pt and back again?) 2. for control of orphans and widows I use the following: \clubpenalty=8000 \widowpenalty=8000 it seems, this has to be inserted after \starttext, which is - I think - not a too good place for such a global definition, shouldn't it be in the setup area before \starttext? but there I cant't get it working. Or am I doing something wrong with the commands? 3. if a command has lots of options it's better to sort of "pretty-print" those like the following: \setuplayout[ backspace=15mm, cutspace=10mm, ... grid=yes, marking=on, ] After some time (lots of time..) I figured out that the last "," is a must, without it, the last option is ignored - why is that? 4. I am well aware this has been asked before on this list, but no good solution came up: I need the footnote ref number to be beneath the main text, not in the small blank space between the text and the margin column. I managed to get it working with the hack by Paul Tremblay posted on this list some time ago and defined my own \myFootnote-command for it, but that is a "quick and dirty" solution, there has to be a better way, so I'd like to raise the question once again: How can this be done? Table in columns or framed columns

Hi, I cannot manage to let a long table span multiple columns, and I also can't find a way to put a frame around a multicolumns piece of text. install help

I am a tex/latex veteran user who would like to start using context to test the waters on some small projects. I have a lightly enhanced texlive 2004 full installation on my fedora linux box. So I already have a version of context installed. But since I noticed some problems with mathml output, I thought it might be a good idea to get the latest and greatest from pragma. This is where things got confusing. Are there simple instructions somewhere for upgrading context for texlive in a minimally invasive way? The installation guide at http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/minstall.pdf does not seem to capture all the necessary steps for getting things working right with new versions. The sparse instructions at http://contextgarden.net/Linux_Installation leave me with a non-functioning context and a corrupted /usr/TeX/texmf tree. Am I missing something? I downloaded cont-tmf.zip (which should I choose? current? beta? alpha?) and installed it in ~/texmf. But I ran into problems with latin modern font names (ec vs. cork). So I installed the latest lm font distribution in ~/texmf (lots of manual labor). Then I found that texexec could not find my formats and kept trying to rebuild cont-en.fmt (using 2005-04-28 alpha). When I run texexec as root, this problem does not occur(!?). Checking the mailing lists, it looks like I need to patch texexec. What is the right way to do this? Currently, I am invoking scripts installed in the texlive bin directory. I have not replaced them with the updated versions in the alpha distribution. Do I need to do something like texmfstart --make and manually move each and every script? Sorry for rambling. I guess this goes with the territory when living on the bleeding edge. As you can see, I am in need of some basic guidance for getting a newish context working properly. I have spent some time looking for step-by-step instructions, but all I get is more confused. The contextgarden wiki could be updated with more complete instructions. I would be happy to help with this if I could only figure out the correct recipe.

With Metapost you can put in background almost anything you want, so it's not complex make a dotted line for frame; Metafun is a great tutorial for these things. A nice solution should be dotted line for \framed WITHOUT use metapost, something like \framed[rulestyle={dot},...] [OT] Can XYpic be used under Context ? I will try . luigi

The MetaPost team is happy to announce a new release of MetaPost: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MetaPost 0.9 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The sources and a win32 package can be downloaded immediately from http://sarovar.org/projects/metapost/ The source package should compile normally on all systems that are capable of compiling a modern web2c-based TeX distribution. The win32 package is intended for fptex or a similar web2c-based installation, and has been tested only with TeXLive 2003. These executables will *not* work for miktex, sorry. Of course, we welcome any comments (either good or bad) that you may have. Simply replying to this message is fine, but see the bottom of this message for a more formal way to report bugs and feature requests. For those of you who have noted the large gap between 0.641 and 0.9: We have deliberately chosen to step over some minor version numbers, such that the first major release by the current team (this release is planned for the autumn of 2005) can become version 1.0 without causing additional confusion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- What is new in version 0.9: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. There is a new internal quantity called mpversion that reports the current metapost version, and the version information is also written to the PostScript file. 2. The LaTeX sources of the mpman, mpintro, and mpgraph manuals have become part of the distribution package. 3. TEX.mp now has TeX format support through a pair of macros called TEXPRE() and TEXPOST(). This llows you to process the contents of the TEX() macro with, for example, LaTeX (instead of plain TeX). An example is given in the manual. 4. metapost now writes a %%HiReSBoundingBox comment 5. The EPS output no longer contains actual spaces within PostScript strings as for example output by label("a space"), but their octal escape (\040) instead. 6. The comments in the Web source have been changed to point out that on modern machines, acquiring the random seed has actually become a system-dependant operation (a granularity of whole seconds is not small enough on new machines). 8. Paths starting with degenerate constructions like (0,0)--(0,0)--(0,0) could overflow memory. 4. The PostScript output could accidentally contain 8-bit characters within PostScript strings in previous versions because a test was shared between terminal printing and PostScript printing. 5. A bug has been found in the assignment of serial numbers to independant variables in metafont 2.71828. This bug affected MP as well, and the same patch has been applied. 6. The turningnumber was sometimes wrong in unexpected ways. The new implementation is still sometimes wrong (when there are strange path segments involved), but in a much more predictable way: the new code always draws straight lines between the actual points, and calculates the turningnumber based on that path instead of the actual path. The effect is that cusps and loops within segments are now completely ignored. A more thorough fix of turningnumber is planned for the next release. 7. There was an 'off by one' error in dvitomp wrt. the interpretation of virtual fonts. 8. mpto uses a new TeX macro for the generation of labels, making it more robust wrt. strange user code within the actual label text. 9. A missing colon in boxes.mp has been added 10. A missing save in mfplain.mp has been added 11. How does one prevent orphans (the first line nof a paragraph on the last line of a page) and widows (the last line of a paragraph on a new page)? If I have the title of a new section that must not be the last line of a page, how can I do this? Old-style figures throughout the document

Hello, I am experimenting with old-style figures (or text figures, as they are also called). Basically, I would like every number in my source document to be typeset in old-style figures (OSF) by default unless stated otherwise. This means: I want to reverse the mechanism so that I can explicitly say where NOT to use OSF. As a work-around I found the following on the list: \defineconversion[number][\os] \defineconversion[numbers][\os] This does not work for plain digits in the text, but it works for generated numbers like page numbers, and, to some degree, for the generated numbers of floats. \starttext \chapter[sample]{Sample} \placefigure[here][a]{cap}{test} Reference: \in{figure}[a] \section[test]{Test} \stoptext In this setup, chapter numbers do not use OSF, and the numbers of figures (as well as references to them) use a mixed form, which looks rather odd. I can add \setuphead[chapter,section][numberstyle=\os] which makes heading numbers use OSF, but then again, references like \in[sample] do not work. texexec does not Rotate right on pdfarrange

Hi everybody, I've got a PDF saying /MediaBox [ 0 0 842 595 ] /Rotate 270 but on concatenating it via texexec to a second PDF saying /MediaBox [0 0 595 842] the first one is displayed landscape and cut to half. How can I prevent this. Does texexec ignore the rotation commands? Need I parse odd PDFs myself? Thanks much for any hints

new beta (again)

Hi all, inline metapost generation was broken aftre upgrading context. I have seen the recent thread with several patches to texexec, so I updated to yesterday evening's beta in the hope that this would fix the problems. Unfortunately not. When trying to generate the mp graphic I get this error: sh: metafun: not found After that, mpost fails with: ! End of file on the terminal... why? Already when generating the metafun format with texexec --make, I get two errors: Use of uninitialized value in substitution (s///) at /homes/eguthoeh/bin/texexec line 2291, <DATA> line 184. Use of uninitialized value in scalar assignment at /homes/eguthoeh/bin/texexec line 2292, <DATA> line 184. I'm currently using TeX (Web2C 7.4.3) 3.14159 from the bash shell under solaris. Right way to load hyphenation patterns

I want to use a non-standard hyphenation pattern (Finnish) in some of my documents. I have been able to make it work by: editing cont-usr.tex (removing a % from the \installlanguage) remaking formats (texexec --make) copying the format wile to the .../web2c directory This works. However, I read in the Wiki that "It is generally better to add local settings to a run-time included file like cont-sys.tex instead, so unless your stuff does absolutely have to become part of the format file, you are better off leaving this file well alone." So, where should I put the \installlanguage directive for it to be in the right place? Is it something that really has to be there when the formats are being built, or could it be loaded afterwards (i.e. at run-time)? Could it be put in the cont-sys.tex? TIA, - Ville

Step repeat pdf in overlay

Hi all, I've created a small (15x15 mm) tile image (actually a vector PDF) that I'd like repeat on a cover page but I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to step repeat* the image. gwTeX and missing PS fonts

I had a smoothly working gwTeX with the exception of a few hyphenation patterns. Before debugging that problem any further, I decided to get the newest beta (texexec 5.3.1, context 2005.04.19). I got the hyphenation problem fixed. It had nothing to do with the distribution or version, just my lack of thinking. Editing cont-usr.tex and then 'texexec --make --all', and ConTeXt was hyphenating Finnish beautifully. However, something else broke when I upgraded. I cannot get the Postscript fonts working anymore. Here is what I have in the file: \usetypescript[adobekb][\defaultencoding] \setupbodyfont[pos,11pt] Everything goes relatively smoothly, except for the fact that I get everything typeset in Computer Modern. A small error message is in the output: bodyfont : unknown variant pos What went wrong? I cannot find the file font-pos.tex on my machine, but as I cannot find it in the source tree, either, it seems to have been embedded somewhere. How should I debug this problem? Where is the actual definition for "pos"? - Ville

Figure formats

Dear list members, If you have the choice of format when preparing the figures for a book written with ConTeXt, what would you opt for? (The figures are being drawn with ChemDraw and Illustrator). Hi Hans, again the stretch option kills the defined \setupTABLE[column][1][width=1cm,align=left] \setupTABLE[column][4][width=1cm,align=middle] (see previous example) Isn't it possible to define the total width of a table and the width of some columns (here 1 and 4) in order to let only the undefined width of column 2 and 3 be flexible (stretchable)? I have finally gotten around to adding a few entries to the TeX Showcase at http://tug.org/texshowcase (some were submitted 2 years ago and at that time put in a To Do mailbox because I was to busy studying, I am reasonably ashamed it took me so long to catch up) The added entries (some are really impressive) are: - cover.tex (tiling with pstricks) - program_sample.tex (uses ConTeXt & XeTeX, very cutting edge ;-) - scorecard.mp (very nice metapost project) - cave.pdf (also very nice) - poster.tex (for a linguistics conference) - 0309Newsletter.tex (your basic newsletter, but not in Quark or whatever) - learning_early.tex (screen document) - LM-Volume-manuscript.tex (hyperref showcase) Given the number of additions, I decided to make an announcement of it and spam it on the lists I am on....
