Hi all, I have installed a fresh gs view 4.7 and pstoedit 3.40 all latest version under windows. I installed pstoedit at H/program files/ghostgum directory. Generated new metafun.mem and udated at localtexmf/miktex/mem directory and texmf/web2c directories. MY makempy still complains about pstoedit is unrecogonised internal or external command. I have been reading through some of the source files (still working on that \note problem) and decided that I had better stop guessing what the English equivalent of \naarbox is. Is there a Dutch speaker who can tell me what I should replace this command with ? Many thanks. Alan

Hey all. Hans and I are working on sorting out the greek Antykwa Torunska font support, and I noticed in the existing files that there is a fairly minimal iso-8859-7 greek encoding already implemented (enco-grk). Here's the question: does anyone encode their fonts using this? Is anyone so dependent on it that it would be a bad thing if it went away and was replaced with a (mostly) compatible new greek encoding (sort of iso-8859-7 married with TeXnANSI)? deviant bodyfont size query

Until the last three updates to ConTeXt, I was getting output without error messages inspite of the fact that I was calling for bodyfont sizes of 10.5 pt and 9.5 pt. Now, when I process the same documents I get error messages and the output has 10pt and 9pt text where I had originally asked for the deviant sizes. Unfortunately, this output is smaller than I was getting before. Moreover, when I call for bodyfont sizes of 11pt and 10pt now, the output is larger. The problem is that i ned to maintain the appearance of the documents that I have been typesetting. So what was I getting before—how were these deviant bodysizes rendered—and, more important, does anyone know how can I get the same result now? Cheers, Alan

Hans Hagen and installed pstoedit. updated the mem file and pdfetex.efmt using texexec --make --alone en metafun. still the problem exits except that the MakeMPY stopped complaining about pstoedit is not recogonise internal or external command. can you help me out. metafun not working

Hi all, I did install the new kpsewhich and texexec send by mr. Hans Hagen and installed pstoedit. updated the mem file and pdfetex.efmt using texexec --make --alone en metafun. still the problem exits except that the MakeMPY stopped complaining about pstoedit is not recogonise internal or external command. can you help me out. columnset balancing

Hello Hans, appologize my boring again with the same question about columnset balancing. But I would like to know what is the current stage of this feature. Seeing the code it seems to me some work in this direction was done but due to very complex and tricky stuff I am not able to recognize, how far from the goal it is. Actually, what is my goal design? + two column layout + float spanning one or two columns (both perfectly fullfilled by columnsets) - each chapter head spans two columns (it assumes stop columns, balancing, continuing on the same page without pagebreak, put chapter head, start columnset on the rest of the page) It is feasible or I will have to abjured this idea? context on miktex update not working

hi all, I have completely reinstalled the miktex. and changed the miktex.ini file as follows as suggested by Taco Hoekwater in the eariler mail. trie_op_size=35111 trie_size=250000 now it works alright. Sorry to plague you with this, but it has brought me to a standstill. On page 84 of the ConTeXt Manual at the bottom of the page, you see the footnote: ** Why? See note *. This is perfectly fine when the footnote marker is a symbol. But when it is number, say 13, one prefers: .... See note 13. where the footnote marker (a number now) is in line. The problem I am having concerns the command for cross-referencing footnotes by their numbers,\note, since this command inserts the number as a superscript. Although this is useful, by the way, for repeating a call to an earlier note at a different location, as on page 83 of the Manual, it is not the only way in which footnotes are typically referenced in printed works. The question, then, is how to adapt \note so that it inserts the footnote number inline at at current bodyfont size. I have checked the source file core-not.tex re \note, but I have not been able to make much headway. Any tips or pointers will be gratefully received. Alan

I have aprehension that miktex and standalone context may clash in the same machine. you can advice me if they do not clash i will be happy to install in the same machine. Can this .tmp file generated by winedt after compilation of any file will help. Dear list members, I have the following questions: 1) I want a table at textwidth. The contents of the boxes don't fit on one line. When I use "|lp|lp|" etc., the width of the table is a fraction of textwidth, and the contents of the columns overlay each other (with long, unhyphenated words). I found "\SetTableToWidth{}" in the beginner's manual (Table 11.3), but no matter where I placed that, it didn't do anything, nor did all my other attempts. I finally adjusted the table by hand (|lp(4cm)| etc). Is there a way of setting the width of the table and let ConTEXt do the rest? 2) The horizontal rules (\HL) are a bit longer than the the text in the table. How does one adjust them such that they are flush on both sides? I tried with \DL, but didn't get what I hoped for. 3) I am using uncaptioned figures in the margin. When they are too close, they overlap. Is there a way of making them know of each other's existence (I sometimes want them as close as possible), or do I have to place the code at an appropriate position myself? Hi, I uploaded a new beta archive with under context/extras a file showunic.tex. The resulting pdf can be fetched from the website (manuals -> fonts -> ...) When playing with this i could not get the hebrew vector working. I think that we need (a volunteer) to make (us) some kind of hebrew/arab encoding and fall back font (probably virtual) with all glyphs (no ligs needed for arab, just individual shapes). Tolerance etc.

Now and then, particularly with narrow pages, a paragraph just doesn't come out right and a line sticks into the right margin. In plain I always fiddled with \tolerance, \pretolerance and occasionally used \looseness to fix things up. Should I continue to use these primitives or is there a more Contextish way to handle these situations? BTW I am using both optical alignment and the hz business. Not sure that the latter is working. -- John Culleton

Apologies for all the MathML queries. Here are two more, embedded in one test file which will run on live.contextgarden.net: -- \usemodule[mathml] \setupwhitespace[medium] \starttext \TeX{} maths aligns $x$ well.\par MathML aligns \startXMLdata<imath><math><mi>x</mi></math></imath>\stopXMLdata squashed to the right.\par Also:\par \TeX{} display maths makes text go smaller for fractions inside fractions: $${{\rm Q}\over{\rm P}}\over{\rm R}$$ I'd like the same to happen for MathML: \startXMLdata <formula><math><mfrac><mrow> <mfrac><mrow><mtext>Q</mtext></mrow><mrow><mtext>P</mtext></mrow></mfrac></mrow> <mrow><mtext>R</mtext></mrow></mfrac></math></formula>\stopXMLdata \stoptext -- In summary: #1 Inline MathML has a wide space before, and no space after. #2 Display MathML doesn't reduce font size for <mtext> content such as fractions within fractions. formatting verse

I've looked on the wiki and in the manuals for an equivalent to LaTeX's \begin{verse} environment. I found a macro in a file on the wiki, but the definition of it seems to be obsolete. \note[xx] produces the footnote number of a note named “xx” as a superscript. What I need is a reference of the form [see 4na above] say, where a is the footnote number. So how can I get/print this footnote number as regular (unsuperscripted) text? Again, thanks for any help or pointers. Alan

Page numbers

I am trying to produce a document with roman numerals in the front section, but normal numbers in the main body. I am able to switch from one type to the other, but I would like to reset the page number to 1 in the main body, but I am unable to find a way to do this. About newtexexec.rb

I found in the folder ...\scripts\ConteXt\ruby a file newtexexec.rb . I try it on some file and I obtain a good result. But I have two problems : 1)after having write the resulting pdf file (after the first run) the hard disk seems to write or to read many seconds and then the program seems to run again 2)the following file : ********************************** \startuseMPgraphic{fig} draw unitsquare scaled 3cm ; \stopuseMPgraphic \starttext \useMPgraphic{fig} \stoptext ********************************** gives a pdf but without the expected square (the file gives a good result with texexec) I am very curious about newtexexec.rb : I begin to learn Ruby some weeks ago. columnset layout distortion

Hallo, I am working on our 40-anniversary scout group bulletin with a complex layout (twocolumn, footnotes, photos, pictures, flowing text in margin). I noticed weird behaviour. <mtext> UTF further problems

I'm still having trouble with UTF contents in <mtext> tags in MathML content. It's difficult to send a sample because UTF isn't preserved well either by email or when sending files to the ConTeXt Live server, but I'd really appreciate it if somebody could help. When I replace 'HERE' in the following snippet with any UTF encoded accented character, it comes out wrong: \useXMLfilter[utf]\usemodule[mathml] \starttext\startXMLdata <formula><math><mtext>HERE</mtext></math></formula> \stopXMLdata\stoptext Can anyone help? Hi, I need some advices/guidelines before start writing my PhD thesis. I'm completely new to TeX and of course to Context but I'm convinced that Microsoft Word is far away from being the right tool for writing a long document. Well, in the past I had some big big headaches. At this moment I've to make a choice: continue using Word or start learning a new tool, which will probably consume much of my time. So, I'm in a dilemma. That's why I'm asking for help. Is it really worth learning Context? I mean, does this package deal efficiently with some important things like TOC, cross-references, bibliography, figures, math, .? Is it too hard to learn (for a mere mortal, of course)? What about support for different languages, in particular for Portuguese? If I choose Context, can some somebody give me some guidelines/advices? Hi to all, Thank you to all of you. I really appreciated your opinions/advices. I'll give Context a try. I've already installed the minimal distribution (for MS Windows XP) from the Pragma site and printed the beginners' manual. At the beginning, I'm sure that I'll post some silly questions. Be patient please! I've another question. s-pre-19: page numbers?

Salvete, with gwTeX, TeXlive 2005 beta, using cont-en : ver: 2005.06.08 fmt: 2005.6.15 mes: english I've got a problem with s-pre-19 I can't get rid of: The menu on the right contains page numbers, set in black \tf, at the lower left corners of the buttons. I have tried getting rid of these by using things like \placelist[Topic][alternative=right,pagenumber=no] or \def\gobble#1{} \placelist[Topic][alternative=right,pagecommand=\gobble] but to no avail. Do others have the same problem or is it just me? Christopher

Defining symbols and symb-*.tex files

Dear All I have been using fleurons in a couple of documents I have been producing by using the context commands \loadmapfile and \definesymbols of the fleurons I want to use, in each document. This is becoming a bit laborious so I though I could create a symb-*.tex file with all my fleurons defined in it which I could use in future documents. I had a look through 'Fonts in Context', and Section 12 Symbols and Glyphs described how to define the euro symbol which looked pretty straight forward. I also looked on the Wiki and reread Adam Lindsay email in reply to my earlier fleuron problem. Old-style numerals

To get old-style numerals as the default, the accepted solutions seems to be the following: \usetypescript [modern][\defaultencoding] \usetypescript [map] [latin-modern-os] [\defaultencoding] \setupbodyfont[modern] However, this causes old-style numbers to be used for \type as well, which looks weird. Is there a way to override the switching to old-style numerals for the fixed-width typeface?
