Hi Adam, the simplicity of XeTeX's font handling is amazing -- when starting from scratch. But I am wondering how can I continue to use the typescripts (and virtual files) that I used to use with ConTeXt?! texexec --xtx --example.file ends in an error log containing: This is METAFONT, Version 2.71828 (Web2C 7.5.4) kpathsea: Running mktexmf AGaramond-Regular ! I can't find file `AGaramond-Regular'. As I do not have *any* idea where to start searching for my mistake (resp. the place where changes have to be made) I dare to send you a complete minimal example (that worked with pure texexec --pdf --example.file) Any feedback might probably help me... I'm working on doing my own math alignment routines. After a lot of poking about in core-mat.tex, I came to the conclusion that \startinnermath and \stopinnermath were probably the things to modify, and the "most polite" way to do that was by defining my own alignment name. So, the following does what I want for a test case: (Note that \defineinnermathhandler is a shortcut to define versions of \startinnermath and \stopinnermath corresponding to the given alignment.) \starttext \defineinnermathhandler{test} {\let\doplaceformulanumber\empty} {} \setupformulas[align=test] \placeformula{a} \startformula c^2 = a^2 + b^2 \eqno{\formulanumber} \stopformula \stoptext First, if I want \stopinnermath to handle the formula number, I have to somehow turn off the \doplaceformulanumber that gets called at the beginning of \dostopformula. Redefining the macro to \empty in \startinnermath works, but it seems a bit inelegant. Is there a better way? top and bottom options of \framed

Hello All! I have problem with \framed command: top and bottom seems to do nothing. According to manual this must produce top aligned framed text: \framed [height=4cm,top=,bottom=\vss] {framed text} Anything I type after top= and bottom= is lost in oblivion. Math bug: \tracemathtrue doesn't work without alignment.

I was recently going through the core-mat.tex file (the one from teTeX 3.0.whatever-it-is) and trying out some of the examples given in the comments, and came across an odd little bug. Consider the following: \tracemathtrue \setupformulas[align=middle] \placeformula \startformula \fakeformula \stopformula This works fine. However, if I take out the "align=" argument from \setupformulas, the tracing boxes disappear. Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out exactly how the alignment works in formulas, from a programming viewpoint. What's a good place to start with this? - Brooks

Hiding the content (drawing empty boxes?)

Hello, Some TeX challenge (probably not solvable?): for gurus only. Is there a way to somehow \starthidden ... \stophidden, which would leave exactly the same amount of blank space as if the content would be typeset? Adam suggested to use transparent font colour, but this doesn't solve the problem as this won't stop the images, frames and nested \color[red]{font color changing commands} being displayed. I tried to adapt the macro \demobox from the TeXBOOK which processes token by token and draws an empty box instead of that token. It works perfectly as long as there is only plain text between the braces, but as soon there is something more complex, it breaks. This behaviour is probably to be expected, but I have no idea how to let all the commands do what they are expected to do and only prohibit placing any boxes with some content. Thanks, Mojca

Hi Hans, I am afraid there is a bug in the latest mptopdf. It presents itself by spurious spaces in the output for long postscript strings. literal escape strings in bookmarks

Below is a simple example of chapter/section titles containing characters that need to be escaped. Although the page content turns out correctly, the PDF bookmarks contain the literal escape string instead or the desired character. Any ideas how avoid this? hello Taco, I did search the result of all the files. All the files are ok. except the MP-mpgraph.mpy and MP-mpgraph.1. The mpy shows only the %mpochecksum : 8298 rest are all blank. \setupitemize[packed,paragraph]

Why does \setupitemize[packed,paragraph] ignore the "packed" option? Another way would probably be to say \setupitemize[packed,joinedup], but I would only like some additional space after the itemization and none before. \setupitemize[joinedup] produces the same result as \setupitemize[packed,joinedup], which I also don't really understand. Is there a way to specify how "packed" two items are? There is a "packed" and "unpacked" option, but when I'm working with huge fonts (on slides for example), it would be nice to be able to specify some fraction of "how well packed" two succesive items are. Hello, I have a miktex installed on xp. Not too long ago I made a update. Yesterday I noticed that mptopdf won't do its job anymore. As I made a copy before upgrading so I could check the behaviour with the old version. The "old" version (which runs) is mptopdf 1.21 The "new" version is 1.3 The errormessage is: This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (MiKTeX 2.4) (preloaded format=mptopdf 2005.7.5) 6 JUL 2005 08:53 entering extended mode **fuenf.mp (fuenf.mp [MP to PDF] ! How to "\processcommalist"?

I would like to define a command, which would be called in the following way: \TheBossWantsTheWorkToBeDoneOn[monday,wednesday,thursday]{tidy up} so that it would be equivalent to: \WeHaveToDo[monday]{tidy up} \WeHaveToDo[wednesday]{tidy up} \WeHaveToDo[thursday]{tidy up} I played a bit with different variants of \processcommalist, but I can't figure out how to use it in this particular case. Is there also a possibility to define a command like \IHaveToDoTheTasks[1-4,7,9-11]{until tomorrow} which would expand into \IHaveToDoTheTask[1]{until tomorrow} \IHaveToDoTheTask[2]{until tomorrow} \IHaveToDoTheTask[3]{until tomorrow} \IHaveToDoTheTask[4]{until tomorrow} \IHaveToDoTheTask[7]{until tomorrow} \IHaveToDoTheTask[9]{until tomorrow} \IHaveToDoTheTask[10]{until tomorrow} \IHaveToDoTheTask[11]{until tomorrow} ? Hello, Here's some more work for you Patrick, in case you get bored. (I guess I'll soon be removed from the list as a spammer/abuser if I continue writing mails such as this one :) What do the others think about it? # Source browser Can you "escape" control characters when searching through the source in ConTeXtgarden? For example, \def\somecommand now has to be written as\\def\\somecommand. And the search field is slightly small (only 20 characters). Well, I admit, these limitations can all be overcome by asking Mr. Google for "\def\someveryveryverylongcommand site:contextgarden.net" or by "grep"-ing on my hard disk. Also, after the search the right window is empty and sometimes 20 hits are found on the left. What about adding some context around the search term? For example one line before and one line after each hit (like Google does)? Once you have that, the same could be done for single files (if a specific word appears in one file more than once than you can select a file and see only the hits found + some lines before and after). If you also add <a name="linenumber"> to the web pages with sources, than you can click on a hit and go directly to the line number where the search term occurs. # texshow-web I've just noticed that there's no possibility to describe single options for the commands. Take \setuplayout for example. Describing such huge collection of parameters in plain text is not clear, synoptic any more. It would be great if there would be a possibility to add descriptions for: - the command as such (already there) - every pair of braces (only one for \setuplayout), has to be visible if it is optional or not - every parameter inside a single brace - every single option for that parameter (for example: width=middle means that ...), default has to be marked Some classification/hierarchy/labeling of the commands could also be added, but this has to be thought of well before starting to implement it. For example "page layout", "floats", "mathematics", "colors", "metapost", "language", "core functions", ... The top-level classification could probably be taken from prefixes of the source files. Enabling the Wiki functionality (bold, italic, tables ... <texcode> and <context>) and linking it to the source browser (to the place where \def\thisspecificcommand is) would also add another dimensionality. It would probably not be 100% compatible with the pretty-much-textbased texshow program, but ... I could imagine that one day something similar as modules.pdf (texshow.pdf) could be made from that page with pretty good documentation of (all ?) ConTeXt commands. The ability to add commands is already there I think (I have never tried it out yet). What about adding commands for (official and third-party) modules? It should be separated from the main page, but still offering the same functionality. I was also thinking about making some interface for translations of commands (for example: when a new third-party module is there, someone could translate it without much effort, some more exotic languages could be translated step-by-step, and new commands in ConTeXt could be found quickly and translated - the dutch interface is probably up-to-date, but I doubt that other translators are constantly checking if anything new appeared). But these things are much more conservative (commands may not change once they are translated) and probably not worth the effort yet. Finally a "five-minute-work" request after all that philosophizing: can you add link to the .po files under "special" in texshow-web and a "submit new .po version" button next to it? Mojca

Hi all I am new to ConTeXt, as my question is about to reveal. There are now several sets of instructions on the net, some of them very long essays, about how to enable different fonts for ConTeXt. Before I dive in: Which set of instructions should I follow, in order to allow use of Palatino or Times, on Mac OS X, Gerben Wierda's TeX distribution, latest ConTeXt installed? I know the information is already out there, just don't know which pages to trust my afternoon/weekend/summer to. :-) Thanks David

metafun not working

Hi, i did as suggested. The Mp.tex is rendering grpahics perfectly. but the pstoedit 3.40 seems to be having problems. it crashes while doing the convertion. However when I change the text "MP" to "MPOOOOL", it crashes with the same error. but the pdf output contains only "MPOOOO" with the last 'o'totally filled with gray circle and 'L' is missing. I did another example of the mmakempy manual of '\input zapf' for outline paragraph. It stops after converting the word 'coming' and nothing at all. what could be the problem. I am using gsview4.7 and gs8.51 with pstoedit3.4 in winXP. The old version 3.31 tried, but failed. I am able to get pstoedit3.33 on serach. Fonts in Metapost

Hello, I have problems with changeing the font in Metapost. I defined my own typescripts somewhere and I also have a mapfile for that fonts. In normal text it workes fine (even math). Now I want to change the font in MP as well (my text is included as label("test",(200,200));): %normal stups: \loadmapfile[cmbright.map] %it seems that the mapfile is loaded only once \usetypescriptfile[type-cmbr] \usetypescript[Cmbr] \setupbodyfont[12pt] \startMPenvironment \loadmapfile[cmbright.map] %it seems that the mapfile is loaded only once \usetypescriptfile[type-cmbr] \usetypescript[Cmbr] \setupbodyfont[12pt] \stopMPenvironment But I always get the standard CMR output. context on miktex update not working

I had recently updated miktex including the context. After update the context fails to work. The kpsewhich was old as suggested by Mr.Hans Hagen and replaced it with new one provided by him. but still not working. I am attaching error file as generated by DOS. I am using miktex + win Edt in winXP. does other miktex updaters also have same error. IF not why in my update. Does someone happen to have a typescript for Apple's Baskerville? My own attempt is below. I installed the font using fondu and texfont. The example file output by texfont works. metafun not working

hi wolfgang and all, I did configured the pstoedit as you said and generated new metafun.mem.
