Choosing a font for our Math Book

This component section1 compiles fine and gives me (checking in Acrobat Professional) a combination of latin modern and computer modern fonts. However, they hardly match in size. The computer modern font is much larger than the text in latin modern font. So, a couple of things. 1. If I wanted to try and see if this would compile with my Lucida fonts, what should I try. 2. Do you have a couple of suggestions for body font and math font that would look good together and can you provide me with the font instructions to include them in my document? I would be grateful. Hans, Taco, Gerben, et al, With the new release of Context, it looks like you have the same: --ro=TEXMFMAIN I've attached my type-tmf-gw.dat and the type-tmf-gw.log that resulted from a run with: sudo texfont --encoding=ec type-tmf-gw.dat I did this by dropping type-tmf-gw.dat in ~/tmp/. The first time I ran it with: sudo texfont --ma --in type-tmf-gw.dat That got the texnansi encoding. I sent that file previously. David

New tmf files?

Taco et al, There was some discussion before this current release about including more tmf files. I downloaded the latest cont-tfm.zip, but see no evidence of more tmf files. Is that still a future project? I updated Context via Gerben's updater and I just installed the Latin modern fonts from Gerben's site about a week and a half ago. Should I be good to go for a while? Ran: iwona $ sudo texfont --ve=public --co=iwona --ma --in That seemed to go well and I compiled: iwona $ texexec --pdf texnansi-public-iwona.tex That went well. Got a nice pdf. Acrobat Professional reports that I have a slew of Iwona fonts in the document. Hans, Taco, et al, I think it would be a good idea (possibly saving you a lot of list answering time) if you put a README file in each manual directory. This could contain instructions such as: 1. Which is the main file to compile. 2. Some font handling instructions. Maybe a reminder of what to do with texfont and type-tfm.dat on different systems. User would be handy in getting this right. 3. Or, as font setups head to an environment file, maybe alternate environment files could be provided to get a plain vanilla no other fonts other than what is supplied with cont-fnt.zip. Hopefully, other on this list can come up with other suggestions for the README. I've just named a few that I know will help me. David

Disappearing characters in \typefile

For my current e-book project I use \typefile to import some TeX files as examples. The syntax is color coded which is very useful. Unfortunately on my screen at least the % character is in yellow so faint as to be unreadable. So I dug into the source code and discovered that the name for this color is colorprettyfour. I changed it thus: \definecolor [colorprettyfour][r=..8, g=.4,b=.2] This gives a light brown which is not pretty but at least is readable on my monitor and hopefully on others. John Culleton

Referencing in Project Structure

All, I have: project book in book.tex environment bookenv book.env.tex product chapter1 in chapter1.tex component section1 in section1.tex component section1 in section2.tex component section1 in section3.tex In each section, I would like numbering of theorems, definitions, examples, equations, etc, to be consecutive and include the section number as a prefix. For example, if a theorem happens to appear first, then number it 1.1, the next three equations (1.2), (1.3), and (1.4), the next two examples 1.5 and 1.6, the next two equations (1.7) and (1.8), the next definition 1.9, the next theorem 1.10, the next three equations (1.11), (1.12), and (1.13), the next example 1.14, etc. Then this numbering scheme is reset in the next section. So, if the first thing to appear is a theorem, then it is numbered 2.1, the next definition 2.2, the next three equations (2.3), (2.4), and (2.5), and so on. How do I set this up in bookenv? David

Showing the page layout

All, I am aware of \showlayout and Patrick's \ShowLayout. In the case of the former, I have this in my environment file: \showlayout \definelayout[myCustomLayout][ header=30mm, footer=20mm, headerdistance=10mm, footerdistance=10mm, topspace=30mm, bottomspace=25mm, height=middle, leftmargin=25mm, rightmargin=30mm, leftmargindistance=10mm, rightmargindistance=10mm, backspace=50mm, width=middle, ] \setuplayout[myCustomLayout] But when I compile, the first page reveals these measurements: header=1.99962 cm %way off footer 1.99962 cm %acceptable headerdistance=0.0 cm %huh? footer distance=0.0 cm %huh? And the list goes on. These don't seem correct at all. Am I misusing this tool? I've been following the discussion on the beginner's manual with interest, biding my time to make my suggestions, thinking about it. One thing that really comes to mind is the huge amount of time I spent as a beginner trying to figure out what settings in the layout, like those above, actually do. And I found the tools for analyzing changes to these layout settings did not help very much. Something that could help the beginniner's manual very much would be a macro that layed the page out accurately with borders around the various areas (as in \showframe) that include all parts of the layout, even if they wander from the printed page. This would accelerate the learning curve for layout dramatically, if it were available. David

Two framed texts on the same line

Hello, I would like to achieve this kind of typographical effect: two text blocks, one of them aligned to the left margin, the other with left-aligned text but with the right margin at the right margin of the page. I can obtain each of them with for example the following: \defineframedtext[lepi][align=raggedright,width=fit,offset=0pt,frame=off,location=left] \defineframedtext[repi][align=raggedright,width=fit,offset=0pt,frame=off,location=right] Now, I want them to be "at the same height". However, using things like placesidebyside or even just \startlepi ... \stoplepi \startrepi ... \stoprepi doesn't work. Any suggestions? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

*EXPERIMENTAL* TeX i-Package release

This release contains a small surprise, mainly created by Thomas A. Schmitz. When you install it, you can use (automatically unpacked) Apple fonts Hoefler Text, Didot, Optima, Baskerville en Gill Sans in PDFTeX. Setups for LaTeX and ConTeXt are provided. For this to work you need to have fondu installed. When fondu is installed, the fonts are automatically unpacked into the gwTeX tree during configuration (currently after install only). See the Readme of the TeX i-Package for some details. G

Hi all, I am currently typesetting a collection of articles that use a great number of unicodeglyphs from 19 vectors. All the regular glyphs turn up fine, but I am unable to get the bold and italic versions of the glyphs. I have made encoding files for all the vectors using the xsl- scripts from Adam Lindsay and installed them via texfont. The sourcefile is an xml-file with decimal-unicode-entities that are mapped to the \uchar command by the \defineXMLentity command. How is it possible to include DraTex code in Context ?

Hi, I'm presently doing my first steps with Context, which seems absolutly wonderfull... so thanks to the developper(s). In the past, I was using plain tex with a macro package called DraTex to draw all sorts of things; so I have a "library" of figures which I would like to resuse in Context. I have seen no specific reference in the Context manual(s) about the compatibility of Context with others plain tex packages. When I do: "\input DraTex.sty \input AlDraTex.sty" I have the message "No room for a new \dimen"... If I load only the first package (DraTex), this works, but for advances things, I need AlDraTex. So the question: how is it possible to include DraTex code in Context ? Thanks for any help. Fabrice L. Ps: I know metafun exists !

I'm trying to have the edition of a book typeset as a superscript, small number. Halfway between itemizations and descriptions

Hello, does ConTeXt have something which is halfway between itemizations and descriptions? I have a small set of properties that should be enumerated together. Right now I'm doing it by defining a \description and then doing \desc{something} stuff \par \desc{something else} other stuff \par etc However, this is an overall cumbersome syntax, especially for the result I would like to obtain. using \startitemize ...\stopitemize with \sym{something} \sym{something else} comes *very* close to what I would like but I can't seem to find a way to prevent the \sym text to wade into the actualt text of the description. Moving close to Lucida but still not there

Hans, Taco, Adam et al, I dropped all of my lucida pfb and afm fonts into a temporary directory, ~/tmp/lucida. Change to that directory and entered: texfont --ve=yandy --co=lucida --ma --in Log file is attached. I was able to compile the resulting texnansi- yandy-lucida.tex. Progress. However, when you look at the log file you will see some "skipping" of the math fonts, certainly not what I want, being a mathematics teacher. Can texexec enable write18 at runtime

All, In GWTeX, I could turn on write18 here: % Enable \write18 (run shell processes from within TeX job) % Set to t if needed % (I think this might have security implications, especially if you % run tex jobs as administrator, so I keep it turned off by default shell_escape = f But, because of security, I am wondering if I can leave this as is and use texexec to enable write18 at runtime. Is there a switch for this? I know you can do it with pdflatex with: pdflatex --shell-escape David

utf8 editor problems

hello, I have a problem which is not directly related to context. When I create document in utf-8 I sometimes get "ïz£" (I hope this is displayed correctly in the mail clients, (a screen snapshot is attached also)) printed on a single page (in the pdf). These letters are not displayed in my standard text editors (scite and notepad++). Only when I open the file in amaya (a xhtml editor) I see these the following letters "ï»¿" and I can delete them. Does anybody know something about this? Thanks Wolfgang

I have a rather large archive of context-related email (because I let it slip for a while), and I fear that may have missed some extant bugs. kpathsea355.dll missing from 2005-11-16 mswintex.zip and mswincontext.zip

The mswintex.zip and mswincontext.zip files on www.pragma-ade.com, dated 2005-11-16, are missing the kpathsea355.dll file from <root>/tex/texmf-mswin/bin. I discovered this while trying the URW Garamond installation instructions in the wiki, and the texfont command failed running vptovf. The kpathsea355.dll file was in mswincontext.zip that I downloaded at the beginning of September, so I copied it from there to my minimal (re)installation (and successfully completed the URW Garamond installation instructions). For future reference, is this type of issue better tracked in the collector? Regards, Adrian Drury

You can get it here: http://tex.aanhet.net/bib/m-bib-beta-20051123.zip News compared to the previous beta: * 2 new styles: - bibl-num.tex: c.f. plain.bst - bibl-ams.tex: AMS style (from Giuseppe) * fix the "hash marks" bug * fix the vertical spacing issues in the bib list * add interaction to \cite[url] * allow a defaulted \setupcite * renamed citation type 'number' to 'serial' * better definition of \inverted...author * don't reset [numbercommand] in \setuppublications by default * don't disable other \setuppublications keys if alternative= is present also (removes the need for doubling the \setup command) * drop the \sanitizeaccents for \cite (making accents work again) * added \nocite and \cite[none] Bugs that are still present: * internal links (\crossref field) are broken (workaround: \nocite[<crossref-ed entry>]) * items with missing years will break the compressed form of \cite[authoryear] and \cite[authoryears] * there is no interaction yet for most types of cite (but \cite[url] should work, as well as \cite[num] when compression is turned off) Hope I didn't forget to mention anything. I'm just trying to modernize and enhance my old typescripts and reckognized that -- and --- become inactive (i.e. don't become endash and emdash, but stay dashes) with the SIL Gentium font (or at least with my typescript). How can that happen? And what can I do? I'm using the latest gwTeX (ConTeXt 2005-11-17). The typescript is attached, but I don't think the bug is in there... Paper size, MediaBox, CropBox and cropping

Hi all, Does anyone know if it is possible to force the PDF output from ConTeXt to contain both a /MediaBox and /CropBox, having set up a document in the following manner: \definepapersize [BusinessCard] [width=85mm,height=54mm] \setuppapersize [BusinessCard] [A5,landscape] \setuplayout [location=middle, marking=on, header=0mm, footer=3mm, topspace=0mm, leftmargin=0mm, rightmargin=0mm, width=85mm, height=54mm, backspace=0mm] When I look at the PDF output I can only find the following box definition: /MediaBox [0 0 595.2756 419.5276] which works out to the size of the A5 sheet (595pt ~= 210mm, 419 ~= 148mm). Math typescript question

Hi all, I have created a typescript for one of that defines the Utopia expert font along with a few others and tries to make use of the Fourier math font. The use of my own 'Utopia' typescript is largely historical but it is also that the default one with ConTeXt seems a little off (missing headline/display but defines some variants that Linotype is unaware of?). In any case, below is what I have to define the math section but I'm getting some rather strange results with it. In particular, I'm not getting the correct sized parantheses when using '\left(' or '\biggl(' and math accent characters (i.e. '\hat' and '\dot') are not above the character, but in the middle of it. I don't really know if this is the best way to define a math font within a typescript but it seems to get me most of the way there. NB, it is based on some of Adam's Euler typescript. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. All, On contextgarden.net/Fonts, dead link? ftp://dante.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/urw/garamond.zip I still managed to find the fonts: http://ctan.tug.org/tex-archive/nonfree/fonts/urw/garamond/ And this command worked for me: sudo texfont --fontroot=/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local --ma --in --ve=urw --co=garamond --show David

texfont confusion

All, I've used svn to download the manuals and I'm in the font manual directory. What gives? Secondly, you see my typo? That is, --collection=text. So, now I want to know how to repair the damage. Can I remove this with texfont? Or do I have to go to all the individual places and remove manually files and directories. And what command do I type after this manual deletion? David

mfonts.tex

Hans et al, OK. I'd like to start with mfonts.tex. I am working with GWTeX on Tiger and have just updated to all of Gerben's latest stuff, so I am as current as I can be with that distribution. I do have Ruby on this Mac. So, hold my hand and and guide me through the compile stage. The first problem, as I see it, is to get the expected organizational tree for these manuals For example, in mfonts.tex, we have: \environment ../allkind/mcommon.tex So, should I do some sort of cvs thing and check out all these manuals and documents? Floats page?

How do I tell ConTeXt that I don't mind if the pages are totally filled by floats (two, three, as many as fit) even if there is no text whatsoever? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta
