Dear gang, I am having difficuly getting dropped caps and the new indenting mechanism coordinated; the dropped cap goes into the margin. LucidaBright fonts...I'm stumped

I've been using teTeX - LaTeX - LucidaBright fonts for many years, but am unable to make these fonts work in ConTeXt. My present setup after installing teTeX (a Debian or Ubuntu package): 1. Make a directory /usr/local/share/texmf/fonts/type1/yandy 2. Copy the LB .pfb files to subdirectories lubright, lucida, lucidfax, lucsans and lumath 3. Run texhash and everything works fine in LaTeX -- I only have to specify \usepackage{lucidbry} in the preamble of my documents. Couldn't be easier. I've read through some of the archived messages on this newsgroup for clues for making LB fonts work with ConTeXt, I have even tried following the suggested steps, but no dice. Could someone here please list the precise steps required to get from my above teTeX setup to one that works in ConTeXt? -- H.A.J. Koster "Behavioral axioms are right, but agents make mistakes..." Placing a scaled symbol within the flow of text

Hi all, I am attempting to insert a symbol at a reduced size within the text flow but I'm not sure how to achieve this. I'm probably using \scale in an inappropriate way and I'm sure don't know my \vbox's from my \hbox's! Any examples of how to reduce the size of a glyph whilst still being able to insert it as a normal character in the text flow would be greatly appreciated. GNU Emacs/ AucTeX configuration for ConTeXt

Hi all, Is there someone using GNU Emacs with ConTeXt. After some googlelyzing, I've learnt : 1. ConTeXt mode from Berend de Boer is now included in AucTeX 2. Some people use Emacs with ConTeXt and METAPOST, but with special .el files that seems not really up-to-date I didn't found usefull information to configure properly AucTeX in order to work well with ConTeXt and METAPOST, even in the auctex mailing list. It's ok for the menu (apparently managed by site) but I don't have syntax highlighting except for comment and indenting doesn't work well. So, my questions are: 1. Since there is a ConTeXt mode, I suppose there is some advanced features like syntax highlighting and indentation rules. Am I right ? 2. If I'm right, how to configure it ? 3. I will use METAPOST in my .tex files, how to manage this within Emacs ? 4. You know advanded features I must know ? ;-) I'm sorry but I'm addicted to Emacs and don't want to use Scite even if it seems ConTeXt-friendly. I'm aware of the fact that this mail is more Emacs/AucTeX related but since I didn't succeed in finding answers yet I submit this issue to the ConTeXt community. Best regards,

I was probing into the font variant mechanism. Is it possible to automatically determine font size to fit text to a given space?

G'day. One of the things I (ab)use ConTeXt for is printing little text labels to Avery stock. This works quite well, and I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to get working with some hints from Hans in the archives of this list. The labels, over time, have varying lengths of text on them, and to get that to fit on a single label sometimes requires that I vary the font size to avoid the text spilling over outside the bounding box. Is there any reasonable way that I could automate the process of adjusting the font size so that I got the biggest possible size while keeping the text fully fitted to the label? I don't mind automating this outside of TeX/ConTeXt, by using a script to try the font sizes and examine the TeX output for overflow messages, but I don't know quite what to look for. Hints about that, or a native TeX method[1], would be very much appreciated. At the moment it is a relatively slow process of manual trial and error. ConTeXt logo

All (and especially Hans...), where is \CONTEXT (the logo) defined? Looking at the output I get, I wonder if it doesn't need a bit of kerning between Con and the following T; there's quite a gap between these two letters (at least in the font I'm using). Thanks and all best Thomas

page numbering

Hello list, How could I reset the page number counter? I can't find that information neither on the wiki nor in the manual. I would like to have a title page without a page number and that the page that follow has the number one. I can say to context not to print the page number on the page title but not reset that counter (and the page that follow begin with the number two...) Thanks alot for your help -AJ

A person on the internet needs help using FarsiTeX, a bidirectional typesetting engine for Farsi and English. It only runs on LaTeX 2.09. If the same task were approached in Context, what would he need to do beyond the regular Context stuff? Are there documents he should read? Hello, I would like to ask a couple of questions about frames and numbers in math formulas. 1. What's the best way to frame a formula like here: \placeformula \startformula \mframed{x^2+y^2=z^2} \stopformula The problem is that: - formula number is shifted downwards in comparison to the formula without a number - I don't know how to do the settings (frame color, frame offset) globally. There's no \setupmframed[...] command. It's probably possible to use a sort of \setupframed[whatever_setting_influencing_only_mframed], but I don't know how. 2. What's the general strategy when doing evel stuff with formula numbering? I would like to use \eqalign and then number formulas like on the following example: z^2=x^2+y^2 (1) =(x'-x_0)^2+(y'-y_0)^2 % no number =R^2\cos^2(\phi) (2) Can I somehow number the formulas (1), (2), (3.a), (3.b), (3.c), (4), (5.1), (5.2)? I would like to manually provide where to start and stop numbering with x.a or x.1, x.2. 3. How can I put more than one equation in a row and number all of them (as if they were placed in three columns)? 4. GNU Emacs/ AucTeX configuration for ConTeXt

Hi all, Is there someone using GNU Emacs with ConTeXt. After some googlelyzing, I've learnt : 1. ConTeXt mode from Berend de Boer is now included in AucTeX 2. Some people use Emacs with ConTeXt and METAPOST, but with special .el files that seems not really up-to-date I didn't found usefull information to configure properly AucTeX in order to work well with ConTeXt and METAPOST, even in the auctex mailing list. It's ok for the menu (apparently managed by site) but I don't have syntax highlighting except for comment and indenting doesn't work well. So, my questions are: 1. Since there is a ConTeXt mode, I suppose there is some advanced features like syntax highlighting and indentation rules. Am I right ? 2. If I'm right, how to configure it ? 3. I will use METAPOST in my .tex files, how to manage this within Emacs ? 4. You know advanded features I must know ? ;-) I'm sorry but I'm addicted to Emacs and don't want to use Scite even if it seems ConTeXt-friendly. I'm aware of the fact that this mail is more Emacs/AucTeX related but since I didn't succeed in finding answers yet I submit this issue to the ConTeXt community. Best regards,

bibtexing problems

Hallo, I've started to add bibliography to my documents. Now I have some questions: 1. How can I handle multilanguage bibtex files (entries in German and English)? I'm writing english texts but I need to cite german documents and in all german references all capital letters are trasfered to small ones. 2. How to encode glyphs/german umlaute (öäüß) in the bibtex file? It seems that I can not use utf for that. 3. I have in the bibtex field: "comment = {genauere Analyse des Papers nötig!}," some comments. They are added at the end the individual reference. Is there a possibility to suppress this field? 4. is there a way of citing by bibtex key? (to get (Hameury2005) for the entry @ARTICLE{Hameury2005,...)). I think that is nice to have during writing the document and only to change this in the final version. Many thanks Wolfgang

enco-pfr.tex - support for Adobe Acrobat

Hello Hans, Taco and others! I would like to know how the "enco-pfr.tex" module works and how to properly use it. Besides of other languages, I also typeset documents in Czech. The search doesn't work (in recent Acrobat 7.0.5) for particular Czech letters (e.g. č,ž etc.). If I try to search for a simple letter (e.g. "č") it stops on every word containing "č", but also "c". If I try to search for a whole word (e.g. "počítač"), nothing is found. :-) I've followed the instructions posted on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Encodings_and_Regimes and in the mailing list thread linked from that page. So I tried: \input enco-pfr \useencoding[pfr] \startencoding [ec] \usepdffontresource ec \stopencoding \setupbodyfont[lbr]% I have typescripts for Lucida Bright fonts, the Czech is typeset OK \starttext A testing Czech sentence follows: Příliš žluťoučký kůň úpěl ďábelské ódy. \stoptext Later I've found out that: - \input enco-pfr is already done in context.tex - \startencoding [ec] \usepdffontresource ec \stopencoding is already done at the bottom of enco-pfr.tex - so it seems that the only command I should issue is: \useencoding[pfr] BTW, in the Czech format (cont-cz.tex), I have defined: \setupencoding[default=ec] Doesn't it collide with the \useencoding[pfr] command later in the document? Why does $\bfmath a \rightarrow b$ % b-f-math behaves different from $\bimath a \rightarrow b$ % b-i-math In the first I get a bold arrow, not in the second one. In bfmath the symbol font switches to bold, but in bimath it does not. The variables do change correctly to bolditalic in both cases.. Is the symbolfont in the mathfamilies not switched in \bimath? For the font (Lucida) I have normal and bold symbol definitions installed: sy=MathSymbol mo 1, \definefontsynonym [MathSymbol] [LucidaNewMath-Symbol] sybf=MathSymbolBold mo 1, \definefontsynonym [MathSymbolBold] [LucidaNewMath-Symbol-Demi] I did set \setupformulas[method=bold] in the preamble and verified that \boldfacemathmethod has the value 1. Inspection of font-bfm.tex did not give me the solution. I must confess being lost here. As an aside another observation with bold math. I clearly have some misunderstanding about the typesetting of the euro sign. In an attempt to implement the MathTimes font and expert fontset, I came across a problem with typesetting the euro. I could not redefine the \texteuro. In \showcharacters it stays empty. Doing \definecharacter texteuro to_some_value in a typescript does not work (giving: Runaway argument?) The euro does appear when I define it explicitely (as coming from the marvosym font): \def\euro{\symbol[europe][EUR]} But then \texteuro is still unaffected and therefore doing "\enableregime[mac] € (euro)" does not work. In the Lucida fontset there is a regular series in lbma (or hlcra), and a bold series in font lbmad (or hlcda). As I understand from the current code, switching from regular to bold should be accompanied by a switch from Blackboard to something like BlackboardBold in the command \bbd (from the sources I guess \bbd in font-ini.tex is the most basic macro here). The problem is that \bbd is defined as: \def\bbd {\mathortext{\fam\purefamily {blackboard}}{\symbolicfont {Blackboard}}} Thus the font is hardcoded to regular Blackboard. I have no idea what should be the best strategy to repair this. As for now, the most general mechanism for switching to other/bold math fontfamilies I could find is using \bfmath (and friends). The font needed is in one of the math font registers, of course, so something like {\ma CNRZ} instead of {\bbd CNRZ} will do for now. But this low level code makes the TeX-source explicitely dependant on the font, because for example in the AMS-series these characters are found in msmb then needing {\mb CNRZ}. Is there some generic solution here? CALLIGRAPHIC There is a similar problem with $\cal ...$ It is defined as \def\cal {\mathortext{\fam\purefamily{calligraphic}}{\symbolicfont {Calligraphic}}} I definded a font synonym "Calligraphic" but ConTeXt does not seem to use it in math mode. The calligraphic symbols appear to be taken from the sy (symbol) math family instead of the Calligraphic font. It is a problem, because in the MathTimes fonts the calligraphic letters are in another font (mtms and its bold companion). Typesetting ${\cal XYZ}\hbox{\cal XYZ}$ gives the wrong characters (coming from the symbol font) in the first XYZ, the correct letters in the second. How can this be solved? yours sincerely, dr. 'empty string' test in MP

Hi all, I pass a string to a MP graphic using \setMPtext{LABEL}{TEXT}. The string can also be empty, and then no action (for the text) is taken. How can I test in MP, if the given \MPstring{LABEL} is empty? I have tried everything I can imagine in the last one hour, but no success. Not my day... This is the old, not working version if not(\MPstring{LABEL}="") : % is always true. Peter

Building and installing pdftex 1.30 on teTeX 3.0

I've followed the instructions listed at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TeTeX_3.0_installation, but it won't quite give. The problem is that I use the Gentoo installation setup as a base and have the latest ConTeXt installed in /usr/local/share. Does anyone know what options to pass to pdftex's configure-script to match the setup on a Gentoo system (where stuff is stored in /etc/texmf and /var/lib/texmf)? Do I have to also do an updmap or enable or some such thing? 2. I note that on my office system, /usr/local/teTeX is owned by root:wheel. But done in my fonts directory, some files are owned by darnolddarn:admind and some by root:admin. Could this be a problem? I ran into this problem which I'm unable to solve: 1) I added the following rule to my xml map file: \defineXMLentity [en] -- 2) yet calling &en; in my document results in the TeX equivalent of "-" rather than "--" being typeset. Hi, I 'reorganized' (split) the beginners manual and put it in svn, so anyone who is willing to translate can check out a copy. I didn't yet change anything (only the file structure etc) and the styles need a cleanup (more modern setup). Because each chapter now has its own file, we can (as suggested on this list) edit piecewise. Don't start yet. First we need to add/remove things and rewrite chapters. blackboard bold and calligraphic

BLACKBOARD There is a problem with the Blackboard symbols, when used in regular and bold forms both. In the Lucida fontset there is a regular series in lbma (or hlcra), and a bold series in font lbmad (or hlcda). As I understand from the current code, switching from regular to bold should be accompanied by a switch from Blackboard to something like BlackboardBold in the command \bbd (from the sources I guess \bbd in font-ini.tex is the most basic macro here). The problem is that \bbd is defined as: \def\bbd {\mathortext{\fam\purefamily {blackboard}}{\symbolicfont {Blackboard}}} Thus the font is hardcoded to regular Blackboard. I have no idea what should be the best strategy to repair this. As for now, the most general mechanism for switching to other/bold math fontfamilies I could find is using \bfmath (and friends). The font needed is in one of the math font registers, of course, so something like {\ma CNRZ} instead of {\bbd CNRZ} will do. But this low level code makes the TeX text source explicitely dependent on the font; for example in the AMS-series these characters are found in msmb, usually ending up in \ma. Is there some generic solution here? CALLIGRAPHIC There is a similar problem with $\cal ...$ It is defined as \def\cal {\mathortext{\fam\purefamily{calligraphic}}{\symbolicfont {Calligraphic}}} I definded font "Calligraphic" but here ConTeXt does not seem to use it in math mode. The calligraphic symbols appear to be taken from the sy (symbol) math family instead of the Calligraphic font. It is a problem, because in the font I am using the calligraphic letters are in another font. Typesetting ${\cal XYZ}\hbox{\cal XYZ}$ gives the wrong characters from the symbol font in the first case, the correct letters in the second. How can this be solved? yours sincerely, dr. No partial contents for parts after the first

I'm using the latest ConTeXt reported here, and I'm noticing that partial contents for the second, third etc part are not available. I have a bunch of files each of which goes like \part{some part} Some text (not always) \placecontent \chapter{some chapter} Each of this file is \input from the master file. However, only in the first part you actually see the (part-specific) content: every other part reports system : part,chapter,section,subsection not found/processed The setup for the contents is as follows: \setupcombinedlist[content] [interaction=all, partnumber=no, alternative=c, level=subsection] \setuphead[part][alternative=middle,placehead=yes,resetnumber=no] The problem is the 'resetnumber': if I take that off, everything works perfectly. -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

Drag and Drop and Authenticate on the Mac OS Tiger

Gerben et al, I am worried about an ownership problem in my texmf.local tree in GWTeX. I get this iwona font, then drag the folder doc/fonts/iwona from the download to /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/doc/fonts using drag and drop and finder. I am asked to authenticate and I do so. Opening a terminal window and checking the result, I find: fonts $ ls -l total 0 drwxr-xr-x 8 root wheel 272 Nov 20 19:59 cm-super drwxrwxr-x 14 darnold wheel 476 Nov 27 19:27 iwona See how the result is owned by darnold:wheel? Is that gonna cause a problem? Should it be changed to root:wheel? Would it be OK to change to /usr/local/teTeX/share and then as root: chown -R root:wheel * Or would this be a bad idea? Gerben, I think maybe all these font thingys I've been trying out to go in ~/Library/texmf. What say you? David

Linux binaries

I just foolishly downloaded the 2005-11-16 linuxtex.zip minimal linux distribution and copied it on top of my previous one, and I now discover that the binaries are linked to a more recent version of glibc than I have on my linux box. Eek. I will clearly need to update the linux machine in due course, but does anyone (a) know if the binaries from the previous zip will work as a stop-gap, and (b) happen to have a copy of the previous linuxtex.zip (or the binaries from it) available for download?
