hi there, i am trying to step a 2 column paragraph \defineparagraphs [poem][n=2] \setupparagraphs [poem][1][width=.4\textwidth] \startpoem poemtitle \poem \startlines ... ... \stoplines \stoppoem the second column is always in \startlines .. \stoplines it is not clear to me after reading the manual what are before, after, inner, or that if these could be used for something like this. -f -- smile, its the second best thing you can do with your lips.

New math collection ?

Hi, I defined some extra math symbols based on the help of David Munger. David posted a question 2 years ago, asking the group how to define extra math symbols. He found a solution himself (see below) and what I am trying to do is to put this into a math collection like math-eul.tex but I am not successfull. Disappearing TOC.

I have a TOC for a newsletter created in the usual way. But if I set it up for printing on my local printer then the TOC disappears. mswincontext.zip installation

Hi all, I am experiencing some trouble using mswincontext.zip. I have properly installed perl and ruby as the wiki says. (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Windows_Installation#Stand-alone_ConTeXt_dist ribution) But when it comes to use cdemo.bat I got: >texmfstart newtexexec.rb --autopdf --pdf demo-tex.tex TeXExec | processing document 'demo-tex.tex' TeXExec | provide ctx file TeXExec | tex processing method: context TeXExec | TeX run 1 TeXExec | tex engine: pdfetex TeXExec | tex format: cont-en TeXExec | progname: context This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.30.3-2.2 (Web2c 7.5.5) \write18 enabled. Using # fmtutil-sys --edit you can comment out the lines for metafun,cont-en, and mptopdf And you can use # cd /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf-var/web2c && rm -f cont-en.* metafun.* mptopdf.* to remove the old (fmtutil-generated) formats. --\stopquote---------------------------------------------------- -f -- the best way out of a difficulty is through it.

metaobj and colors

hi there, i am a (somewhat) long time pdflatex user and i am trying to convert to ConTeXt. openbsd comes with teTeX 3.0 pre-packaged, that is with a very old ConTeXt. the package has some openbsd specific stuff, but minimal, and only for keeping cnf files between updates and a couple of paths are different, but that is it. i was (am) having font problems, so i thought an upgrade would not hurt. the lovely guides on contextgarden.net got me started, and with minor changes i have a fresh ConTeXt up and running, but i have some problems still i am afraid. i am very new to ConTeXt and to TeX in general, i was always behind the "safe" curtains of macros (like memoir, etc). as i followed the instructions from here: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TeTeX_3.0_installation my question are related to this page.... i will break down my question into more mails, so it's not too long, and so that people can answer to mails they know the answer to :) the first one: the first step to upgrade context is: --\startquote--------------------------------------------------- Fix texmf.cnf Now first you have to fix texmf.cnf as supplied with teTeX: # vi /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf You have to add an engine path to the TEXFORMATS line, so that it reads: TEXFORMATS = .;$TEXMF/web2c/{$engine,} --\stopquote---------------------------------------------------- i deliberately skipped this one, and the new context worked without it. what does this precisely do? when i first run the new context, a new line in the output immediately caught my attention: TeXExec 5.4.3 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2005 fixing texformat path : .:{!!/home/f/.texmf-config,!!/home/f/.texmf-var,/home/f /texmf,!!/etc/texmf,!!/var/texmf,!!/usr/local/share/texmf,!!/usr/local/share/tex mf-local,!!/usr/local/share/texmf-dist}/web2c/{$engine,}{pdfetex,} so i thought, ok, here's the path issue. so i added "{$engine,}" as intructed, but it turned out that that this new line comes up anyway. could anyone comment on it? the next tip is to --\startquote--------------------------------------------------- While at it, you probably want to set shell_escape = t if it isn't already. --\stopquote---------------------------------------------------- in the default openbsd package this line says: shell_escape = f what is the difference? and what is it for anyway? some external execution of the legends are true? :) -f -- i'm not old. i'm chronologically gifted.

randomize a color

To my poor understanding this usage seems to comply with that defined in mp-tool.mp. What am I doing wrong. problems with uppercase Greek letters in math

Hello, The uppercase Greek letters in the following example don't work since the letters are taken from ec encoding, while the default TeX encoding is assumed in the definitions of Phi, Psi, ... ("mr", math roman font) Any suggestions how to fix this strange behaviour? \setupfootnotes[split=?] query

Currently I have \setupfootnotes[split=verystrict] and I am still getting one footnote call that occurs on the last line of page n where the note itself appears on page n+1. Is there a way to prevent this by assigning split= a number? If so, what numerical value will work? Or is there another setting? Thanks for any help. Cheers, Alan

Hello again, I know I can use \starttyping with commands by saying \setuptyping[option=commands] and then /BTEX \red{a red text}}/ETEX. Can I do the same for \typebuffer[mybuf]? Unexpected behaviour of setuptyping

I gave an invalid option and expected it to have no effect, but was pleasantly surprised that it gives color output. New bib beta (release candidate)

Hi all, I have finally uploaded a new beta for the bib module. I really hope this is the last one before a normal release in a week or two. http://tex.aanhet.net/bib/m-bib-beta-20060205.zip I do not intend to do any more work on the still open limitations/ wishlist at this time, because synchronisation with the standard context distibution is becoming an issue. Only the documentation still needs to be fixed, and of course any fatal bugs that may be in this beta. Compared to the november 23 beta, the following things have changed (many thanks to the people who pointed out bugs and submitted fixes): * Make right-aligned labels work even if autohang=no * Use 'et al.' instead of 'et.al.'. * Additional headtext for cz * Keep whitespace after \cite with single argument * Fix broken \cite-with-braced-argument * Fix \usepublications not finding it's files * Fix compressed version of authoryear style !!* Renamed the \url and \type to \biburl and \bibtype Most of those are only fixes and should not bother you, but watch out for that last one, it breaks compatibility. I really had to do this, because \url and \type clashed heavily with predefined context commands, but it invalidates some existent bbl files, sorry. Cheers, Taco

Dear all, In ConTeXt, the following example was shown in colors. \setupcolors[state=start] \starttext The use of color in \TeX is not {\red easy}. {\blue What color is it?} \stoptext but, the same text after defining new typescript and saved for XeTeX +ConTeXt, the colors were gone. It is possible to change color using following method: \special{color push} \special{color rgb 0.0 0.5 0.8} sample text \special{color pop} However, is there a simpler way to use color in XeTeX+ConTeXt as in ConTeXt? metafun "boxes"

Hi all, Yesterday, I have tried to put "\input boxes" within a MPgraphic. As a result, I obtain errors at compilation. After discussing this issue with Taco on #context, it appears that boxes.mp and metafun interaction is not safe at all. Ok, but since my needs remain the same, solutions are : 1. just do it, but manually (not smart at all) 2. use metapost then include the result in my document through ps or pdf files (this solution needs the user takes care of fonts + manually metaposting -> not "really" smart) 3. use charts (but depends on what you want achieve -> ok, but not for all purposes) 4. define some metafun macros (time consuming at the beginning but it's best to invest for the long term) X. others solutions I don't know yet... (feel free to add yours !) My thought is to finally obtain in metafun: 1. Nodes with text (multiline text!) and a collection of "simple" shapes to use like box, circle, box with rounded corner... 2. Nodes must be placed freely accroding to the metapost coordinate system 3. Connections between nodes (using boundaries of each nodes + possibility to give angles from...to for each connections) PSTricks can do that but it can be nice if metafun can provide this kind of features. See http://renolab.lrv.uvsq.fr/perso/ConTeXt/sample.png to have an idea (nodes are aligned in this figure but it is a particular case)... Maybe a solution exists, but since I don't know it, I send this post: 1. Are other people interested ? 2. What is the best solution to implement this feature in metafun ? Multiple Footnote Threads

Hello, Using ConTeXt, I would like to have multiple footnote threads in a document. For example, one thread might be for the reader, another for a particular reviewer, and another for my own editing notes or comments forrequired future work. Each thread should be indexed by a different set of symbols, and placed at the bottom of the page or at the end of the text or document as desired. I have found this to be a good way to work. However, I can't find a way to do this in ConTeXt. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance, Rob Walton

texexec.ini not read

I was trying to make the stand along context work with cygwin using cygwin ruby. Following the advice on the wiki of adding /scripts/context/ruby to rubylib, everything works fine. However, I am not able to enable write18. I copied texexec.rme to texexec.ini and added -shell-escape to all set TeXPassString in texexec.ini. However, I still get system(mpost .....) disabled in my log file. Reading through newtexexec.rb it seems that it does not check the ini file. Is this correct? Or am I missing something. This is interesting, since I have the same problem with WinEdt and Acrobat (on Windows). I had notice that is there is not input file in my ConTeXt file, then, when I compile by WinEdt interface, the pdf file is closed with no problem. If I use an "\input file.tex" command in the ConTeXt file, then one ask me a file name for the pdf, since the file can not be closed automatically. I had consult WinEdt mailing list too, and no solution there. I have no solution, but from the symtom I describe, I suspect this is a ConTeXt thing... Fabrice.

I think the normal behavior would be to automatically close the current instance of the file in Acrobat and compile it again. Is there something wrong with my installation, or this is a bug? Hi, I use a standalone context distribution in parallel with miktex. The way miktex is configured, it provides a texexec.exe file in its bin directory. Context provides a texexec.bat file in its bin directory. Normally, texexec is supposed to be run using texmfstart which picks texexec.rb from the script directory and everything works fine. There are however some macros that call texexec without texmfstart. As a result the miktex texexec (texexec.exe) is called over context's texexec.bat. I am listing the files that call raw texexec. I cannot get backgrounds to work as I understand from the manual. This example is from the manual: \setupcolors[state=start] \setupinteraction[state=start] % don't if needed, manual p. 122 seems to suggest it \setupbackgrounds[header,text,footer][text] [background=color,backgroundcolor=darkcyan] \showframe This does not show coloring of the indicated area. It colors only when the first option is [page] or [paper] and then it colors the whole page. So I never get coloring in the indicated parts. The other example is from cont-new.tex: %\defineoverlay[Draft][{\scale[factor=max]{\rotate[rotation=90]{~MY|| DRAFT~}}}] \setupbackgrounds[page][background=Draft] This also seems to work for [page] only. But I want the text in one of the edges or in the margin, not smack in the middle of the page. I am doing something wrong in not getting the finetuning per area as the manual seems to promise? A nasty problem arises when I try to enclose columns into a framedtext and at the same time want to typeset it narrower inside the frame. 1. framedtext: columns will not typeset, simplecolumns does 2. narrower: columns honors narrowing, simplecolumns does not. Now I am caught between two impossibilities. Is it an option that simplecolumns will also be honoring startnarrower..stopnarrower? Is there another, simple solution? yours sincerely, dr. Nath bugs?

I've been trying to make some notes on typesetting math in ConTeXt, and using nath seems the way to go. An odd thing about using \binom with nath: in displayed equations, it works fine, in inline equations, \binom{1}{2} will typeset "1(2)" (with a raised "2"). I suppose it's known that \startalign won't work with nath if given an argument like [n=3]. Overall, though, this is very nice. Jay

Hi ML, which is the current preferred method to get a table splitted over multiple pages within an float environment? I've tried natural tables and linetables. Both within an \placefloat, \splitfloat and outside of an float environment. Only one variant splitted the table as expected, the natural table outside of an float environment. The ML archive showed that this is a hot topic with periodically repetition. Hi Hans, I have problem with chars encoding now; I have updated ConTeXt sometimes in January; before the time I was using old (year) version. In this prehistorical version the problem was not present. What is the stuff? The following code generates content with titles without spaces -- accented characters are replaced with \char XXX variant, so during reading TUI line TeX gobbles a space after XXX as a part of <number> syntax rule. Can I do something? With encoding? With XML? figure scaling

Typesetting a jpeg picture I found a small, but discernable error in the result. \externalfigure[foto.jpg] [width=60mm,height=60mm,frame=on,rulethickness=.1pt] I tried several pictures and all show that the picture extends above the topframe edge. Using a thicker rule does not make the excess of picture disappear. Either the picture raises above the topframe edge or, as well may be, the topframe edge is put somewhat to low. I could determine which of these is the case. The bottom edge and the left and right edges seem ok. Did some examples, e.g.: foto.jpg scaled from 2592 x 1944 pixels down to 60mm x 60 mm another one smaller of 340 x 510 pixels It should be the scaling, because the picture comes out correct within the frame when typeset at its natural size. Hi ML, currently i'am writing my thesis with ConTeXt and really appreciate your work on ConTeXt. ConTeXt makes it possible to concentrate on the content and needing as little as almost none TeX insights while achieving great layout setups. Thanks. :) I'am just a ConTeXt user who hasn't any depth knowledge of the whole TeX issue (yet). I've can't find answers to some questions which poped up to complete my desired setup. Please guide me to the place where i'll find the answers which are hiding of me. 1. BibTeX xrefs: Is it possible to get interactive references (maybe even with different colour than the global interaction color) from the \cite command to the referring entry in the publicationlist working at the moment? 2. BibTeX different colored keys: The keys of \placepublications entries till the second entry on the second page are colored red, the following belonging to the global interactive color. What is the reason for that? 3. Vertical Spacing in \placelistoffloats: Is there a way to get vertical spacing in e.g. \listoffigures between figures of different chapters working? I'am using the following software packages: - Web2C 7.5.4 - pdfeTeX Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 - BibTeX 0.99c - ConTeXt ver: 2005.08.31 fmt: 2006.1.1 - tried also ConTeXt ver: 2006.02.02 10:56 fmt: 2006.2.3 on completely different texfm trees. The first [...] in the \startregister command is the name of the register itself, then there is a second one for the sort key/range identifier. So you want: \startregister[index][Menippean]{Menippean} \stopregister[index][Menippean] and then you can have \startregister[index][Menippean1]{Menippean} \stopregister[index][Menippean1] as well. skipping parts in compiling

Hello out there, I use Taco's bib module and have a question concering labels/numbering. In the text I use \cite[knuth:texbook] and want to have a label like [1]. In the list of publications I have all bib entries also labeled [1], [2], ... but the ordering in the textbody is incorrect. The first citation in the text is labeled [6] while the corresponding entry in the list of publications it is labeled [1]. The number 6 probably comes from the bib database, where [knuth:texbook] is the 6th entry. So, how do I get [1] both in the place where I cite [knuth:texbook] and in the list of publications?
