Idris, I pasted your maths stuff into the preamble and the test content as well; is this what you expected to see from your test? I wasn't sure, but it looks good to me. Thanks again. Hans, in Friday's beta, core-sec.tex line 767 has \edef\levelstring{=\flistsectionseparator\@@filternumberpart[#1]\sectionseparator}% which fails not knowing what \flistsectionseparator is. Reverting to \edef\levelstring{=\sectionseparator\@@filternumberpart[#1]\sectionseparator}% works but may not be the intended effect. Duncan

INstall minimal context system.

I downloaded the justtex.zip and the context-linux.zip files into a work directory /usr/local/cont and unzipped them. Then I cd to the tex directory under that work directory. I made the the setuptex file executable and executed it with no apparent effect. Then I changed the path to point to /usr/local/cont/tex/texmf-linux/bin and ran mktexlsr. It followed the new path. I ran texexec --make --alone and it seemed to be successful. Ran mktexlsr again. Then I ran a test program in another directory. It could not find cont-en.fmt. In fact this file or anything similar to this file does not exist in this tree, although it existed in my previous tetex tree and exists in my texlive tree. How do I create and/or download this file? -- John Culleton

continuous numbering of subsection

Dear ConTeXt Experts I am still sometimes confused about how to set up simple things... I want to have a subsection level head type ("topic") with a numbering that runs undependently from the section numbering, like so: 1. First Topic ... I. Section One ... 2. Second Topic ... 3. Third Topic ... 4. Fourth Topic ... II. Section Two 5. Fifth Topic ... 6. Sixth Topic ... III. Section Three ... And so on. ConTeXtgarden, the manual, etc. show in great detail how to set up the /appearence/ of head parts (incl. numbercommand), but I cannot find an explanation of the handling of the LaTeX equivalent to counters (their definition, incrementing, resetting, etc.). The explanation of \setupheadnumber in the manual (p. 172) is quite obscure to me -- how do I specify that I do not want higher levels of head to reset my numbering? Thank you! Ulf Martin

Hi, I am simply trying out different math fonts available, and found iwona-heavy to be "strange". Look at the output of \usetypescript [iwona-heavy][ec] \setupbodyfont[iwona-heavy,ss,11pt] \starttext This is some test \startformula \Pr(A = B) = \frac 12 \stopformula \stoptext The math is much bolder than the text. Preventing page breaks (needspace)

While using \obeylines for some poetry there would sometimes be page breaks in the middle of stanzas, even if there was very stretchy space on either side. So I borrowed some code from needspace.sty, basically to tell TeX I'd be much happier w/ a ragged bottom than a break between lines: \def\needspace#1{% \begingroup \vskip#1\lineheight\penalty -100\vskip-#1\lineheight \vskip#1\lineheight\penalty 9999\vskip-#1\lineheight \endgroup} So if there is a stanza of four lines that *really* shouldn't be split across pages, it looks like this: \needspace{4} Line 1 Line 2 Line 3 Line 4 However, I suspect I'm not the first person to run into this. So my question is if there is a more ConTeXt-y way to do this? Or does ConTeXt already have something to do this?

wasy symbols

I need one of the wasy symbols, the check mark to be exact. Now I add: \usemodule[symb-was] and this allows me to type set the mark with: WaldiSymbol = \WaldiSymbol {8} but although the module file defines: \definesymbol [checked] [\WaldiSymbol {8}] I cannot do something like \checked because \checked is an undefined control sequence. Hello, in accordance to http://context.literatesolutions.com/collector/52 I got used to write things like: \starttext \setupTABLE[c][1][style=before,bottom=after] \bTABLE \bTR\bTD X\eTD\bTD bla\eTD\eTR \bTR\bTD X\eTD\bTD bla\eTD\eTR \eTABLE \stoptext This worked fine, but with the latest ConTeXt, the bottom=... introduces a newline. It it true that in Arabic the digits making up a number should read from ltr while separated numbers forming a section or float reference should read rtl overall. reference formatting

With \definereferenceformat[pin][left=(,right=)] it is possible to typeset references with \pin[ref] and get "(ref)" I have two questions in this respect: 1. is it possible to change the general setup in the same way, e.g. let \in[ref] do the same as \pin[ref] here. The left and right are not in setupreferencing. 2. some strange interchange takes place when using \pin{A}{B}[ref]. Instead of the expected "A (ref) B" one gets "A (refB); it therefore seems the right parenthesis from the setup comes too late in play. Hans van der Meer

So to match the setupheads, we need also: \setuplist[section,subsection,...][separator={{.}}] Unfortunately \setupreferencing[separator={{.}}] seems to just put an extra . before the figure number, but not reverse it, resulting in: '1.2- erugiF' Duncan

ConTeXt 2006.06.09 released

Hello all, I am pleased to announce that the new ConTeXt release from Hans Hagen can be downloaded as of now from the Pragma ADE website or one of its mirrors. The current release has version 2006.06.09, and it is on the wiki as http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Context_2006.06.09 This is a relatively minor release, with some optimizations and a few bugfixes. More importantly, there is a new beta/latest, with support for the pdftex 1.40 releases (currently in beta). Happy TeXing, Taco

How to increase left and right padding of cells in a natural table?

Hello, I'm using natural tables (\bTABLE ... \eTABLE) and I want to increase the space between the cells borders and the text inside the cells (CSS calls that left-padding and right-padding). I didn't use parameter "offset" because I want to increase only left and right padding. I don't want to increase top and bottom padding. How can I do that? Hallo! I am trying to use 'standardmakeup' to produce 'Schmutztitel'-page with a following blank page. I think this is what \start\stopstandardmakeup is for (in doublesided environments). But the example bellow has first a blank page and then 'Schmutztitel'. There is a fourth blank page too. ------------------------- \setuppagenumbering [alternative=doublesided] \setuplayout [ footer=.04\paperheight, %1 grid=yes, %2 marking=on, location=middle, width=middle, height=middle] \starttext \startfrontmatter %3 \startstandardmakeup Schmutztitel \stopstandardmakeup \stopfrontmatter %3 bla \stoptext ------------------------- My experiments: - a space-char between 'doublesided' and ']' removes the last blank page (strange). - uncommenting the lines in position 1,2,3 exclusivly results in the correct behaviour. puzzling font replacement

When I use recent ConTeXt (through Mac i-installer's ConTeXt updater), all I get is documents typeset in a kind of poor quality Times, with all ligatures gapped in the PDF file. Older documents, when re-run with the recent version, all show the same font replacement. Could somebody please explain what's going on? Split Table Desperation - again!

Hello, While the recent modifications to the split table mechanisms provided by Hans help me out with my most annoying monster table using the XML mapping code below (see http://www.idyll.org:8081/JohSite/context/p46-50_split_working.pdf/view for the typeset table; clearly to much whitespace, but everything is typeset and page boundaries are honored) and several other -smaller- tables in the same tome (see http://www.idyll.org:8081/JohSite/context/p45_unsplit_working.pdf/view for a typeset example), one medium-sized table that clearly should not be split gets split none the less (see http://www.idyll.org:8081/JohSite/context/p162-163_unnecessary_split.pdf/vi…) ... and I have no idea why. Aleph queries

Hello all (especially Idris :-) ) Using the fantastic resources from Idris' messages on this list, and the Aleph page on the Wiki, I have managed to start producing Arabic PDF output directly from UTF-8 sources using Aleph and dvipdfmx. This is great, thanks so much. I have just one or two queries and things I wasn't able to make work. I hope someone can help. My test file is here: http://www.capdm.com/public/context/omarab-queries1.tex And the output it generates is here: http://www.capdm.com/public/context/omarab-queries1.pdf First question - how do I get italic text? The first three paragraphs in the test are identical content, but the second has {\it ...} around it and the third has {\bf ...} around it. The third para comes out perfectly in bold, but the second para looks the same as the first. How can I get italics? Second question - that same first para contains 5 ligatures. They don't seem to match the rest of the font. Is this a set-up issue, or is it the way the font is designed? If it is a set-up issue, is there a way to fix it? Third and final question - I inserted a section and two subsections to demonstrate that the numbering of subsections is left-to-right. How can I make it right-to-left? (Explanation: the PDF shows section "1", and then subsections "1-1" and "1-2"; reading the numbers from right-to-left, I need it to show as section "1" and then subsections "1-1" and "2-1". In the subsection the "1" should come first when reading rtl.) Thanks very much for any help. Bests, Duncan

Optional Arguments for cite

Hi Taco, Latex provides an optional argument for \cite. For example, if I want to refer to something on page 4 of a paper, I can say.... see \cite[page~4]{key}. This is typeset as [3, page 4] where 3 is the reference number. How can I do something like this with the bib module. Note that I can not use the page key from the bib file, as the page key stores the page numbers of the paper. I want to cite a specific page (or theorem or ....) of the paper. showelements in x-contml documentatation

When I try to process contml module's documentation, the system seems to go in an infinite loop. No error is produced, but the process takes 100% memory and does not produce anything for a loong time. If I comment all the strings containing \showelements and \showXDScomponent, documentation is produced. I do not know why this happens. Aditya

Hello, I saw the following nice feature in a book, which I also like to use for a longer work. The author uses a cite by author style (Sharma, 1979) and in the citation index: Nobody, N. B. and N. N. Nonomens, J. Improper Sci. 12, 199 (2007). 5 Nonomens, N. N., See Sharma, R. R; Nobody, N. B. Sharma R.R and N. N. Nonomens, Phys. Rev. B19, 2813 (1979). 320, 323, 330 where the last numbers are the pages on which one has cited the item. That way one automatically creates an index of persons, one cites. One could even link the page numbers to the referrering page. Tobias

Ugly hack for multiple MSWord docs.

Frequently I find myself in the position of needing to combine several MSWord and/or rtf documents into a single file for either pdftex or Context. I have settled on this strategy. 1. If necessary I convert the documents to rtf with Open Ofice Writer. 2. I convert the resulting rtf documents to LaTeX using rtf2latex2e. 3. I need to rename some of the LaTeX commands to their plain TeX or Context equivalents, and simply ignore others. Instead of editing each and every occurrence, I add the following to my "macros.tex" file which heads up the document: ---------------------------------------------------- \def\documentclass{} \def\newcommand{} \def\usepackage{} \def\tab{} \def\hspace{} \def\begin{} \def\end{} \def\textbf#1{\bf #1} \def\nobreakspace{~} \def\underline{} \def\newpage{} \def\textmd#1{\rm #1} \def\textit#1{\it #1} \def\large{\tfb} \def\reg{\rm\char174\ } \def\textregistered{\reg} ------------------------------------------------------ I create a master file that calls in each of the .tex files and compile the whole goulash. If I missed a latex tag then I add it to my \defs shown above and recompile until I get a clean run. Now I have a readable pdf file and can start correcting the format. The scattered Latex tags give me hints where centering etc. might be needed even though the tags are inoperative in Context, thanks to my nullifying \def statements shown above. Someday there will be an elegant solution to the MSWord to Context problem. For now there is my ugly hack as described here. -- John Culleton

Hello, How do I get the entries in TOC/LOF/LOT, t-bib bibliographic references and in-text references to other text parts (paragraphs, figures, tables) hyperlinked so that clicking on the respective references will lead me to the object referred to? Thanks for your help, Joh
