Hi all, Considering the test http://renojrl.lrv.uvsq.fr/testbed/ I have some problems using lucida: texexec gives some warnings: kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 0+420/600 --dpi 420 texnansi-raw-lbr mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for texnansi-raw-lbr. kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log. and the resulting pdf leads to "Could not find a font in the Resources dictionary"... Moreover, I don't want to use pk... How to solve this problem to embed lucida into test-3d_kin_foreground.pdf ? Another point: I am affraid that test.pdf embed lucida twice once one can embed the font into the staticMPfigure's pdf... May I have to continue with my old MPgraphics or I'd rather replace them by staticMPfigure ? Cheers, Renaud

All, Anyone know how to repeat a command in the DOS console in Windows Scite? F3 woks in a DOS box in XP, but that is reserved for something else in Scite.

document structure

I have a question about document structure, because I want to structure a series of products correctly and I do not know if I understand everything in the manual about it well enough. Must I understand that "\startlocalenvironment[abc]" within an environment file means that this codeblock is used only for typesetting product/component abc and excluded automatically when another product/component is typeset? Or is it just a declaration analogous to "\startenvironment file setups \stopenvironment"? But then I don't understand why the manual does not tells me "\startlocalenvironment[abc] file setups \stoplocalenvironment" as it does for \startenvironment The macro "\localenvironment name" gives me some headaches. I might guess usage in a master setup file as: \localenvironment abc % load environment file abc.tex if typesetting product/component abc \localenvironment xyz % load environment file xyz.tex if typesetting product/component xyz How does this relate to the above question about setup-file structure? Hello Hans and others, I'd have two comments to the texmf/scripts/context/ruby/base/tex.rb script. 1. I find quite impractical that the formats (cont-en, cont-nl etc.) are hardcoded in the scripts. When one wants to add a new format, then he must add it on 4 or 5 places in the script, and do it again and again everytime when upgrading ConTeXt. :-( 2. Maybe this is an OS and TeX distribution specific issue... I use TeXLive 2005 on Windows XP. The TeX formats are located in C:\TeXLive\texmf-var\web2c. [the "kpsewhich --show-path=fmt" command also shows this path]. When generating a format using "texmfstart texexec --make en", the generated format is placed into C:\TeXLive\texmf-var\web2c\pdfetex. Then, when trying to use the format, it is not found... This is done on line 547 of tex.rb: texformatpath = if getvariable('local') then '.' else Kpse.formatpath(texengine,true) end So I've changed it to "Kpse.formatpath(texengine,false)" and everything is fine. But I don't understand why it is set so by default and why it doesn't work for me. Does anybody experience the same problem? -Richard

The \quote and \quotation macros surround text with quotation marks. These are made language dependent. In dutch the old way was an opening mark at the baseline and closing at the top of the letters; ConTeXt has been programmed this way. However, the lower quotation mark is less and less used in Dutch (vide Jan Renkema, Schrijfwijzer, 2002, p.382) and the English variants are now commonly used. This leads to two questions: 1. is there a setup-macro that can be used? (switching language around before quote and changing back inside is a bit awkward); \setupdelimitedtext[..][..] is not documented in the manual, is this the one to use, and how? I tried this but could not effect a change and from the code I could not deduce what to change. 2. is this a case for changing ConTeXt's default for Dutch? Hans van der Meer

I found a small flaw in the placement of floats. \placefigure[left]... ended at the bottom of the page (before the footnotes), but on the next page the text began as if the figure was still there: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx flowing text xxxxx figure xxxxx flowing text xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx flowing text (some whitespace followed by footnotes) ...........................................pagebreak............ (open space) flowing text first line second line of text starts normal at the left margin Is this known behaviour? Can it perhaps be massaged with parameter settings or is ConText here taking just somewhat oversized vertical space? Hans van der Meer

All - I downloaded and installed ruby 1.8.4 from sunfreeware.com, and now I can at least use the texmfstart command. Now, I try to generate a test document which I normally use to test my setup with the features I use most frequently, and everything works except including graphics. I have a set of pdf graphics which I normally modify on a per-project basis, and they go on the cover page of my documents. The document seems to be complete, and I don't see any inclusion errors in the log. But I do see some new errors about underfull/overfull which I have not seen previously, and I don't know how to interpret them. Centring text on a page

I have a title page I would like to centre some text on. I can easily do the horizontal text with: \startalignment[middle] ... \stopalignment But I can't figure out how to get it to do verticle centring. Russian hyphenation

Hello to all ConTeXt users, First of all, I'm impressed of opportunities that ConTeXt provides to book and magazine designers. Especially I like designs of Hans Hagen's manuals :) I have a medium experience in LaTeX (typesetted several books with math, tables and figures), but I've no experience in ConTeXt at all. I'm a russian user and interested in support of russian and ukrainian language in ConTeXt. By the way, I already tried example from contextgarden wiki and it works for me fine. So my question is: how to enable russian (ukrainian) hyphenation in ConTeXt? I tried files from http://trash1.hotmail.ru/ but these fails to compile (in my opinion they're not compatible with modern ConTeXt, as they maybe outdated). If there is no straight way to solve russian hyphenation problem I'd like to help with it :) Thanks. WBR, Arkady Shraer

Can't get texmfstart to work

All - I had not updated my install for quite some time, so I thought today might be a good time to try. I only normally generate PDF output in letter size, and this has worked fine for me in the old Perl version (in fact, it still works, but complains that I should use "texmfstart"). Problem with \typefile

I use the lines: \typefile {samp.tex}{samp.tex} \page[yes] \stoptext % For debugging purposes The file samp.tex contains ascii tex from the sample files knuth, zapf and tufte, concluded by the single tag \bye. The document compiles fine and displays fine in xpdf or kpdf (Linux). But Acrobat Reader 7.0 (Linux) comes up with the message "there was a problem with this document" and displays two blank pages instead. splitting a pdf into multiple volumes

Hi all, I'm trying to split a large document for printing to multiple volumes/books. The first volume should contain a table of contents (but no index/list of figures), the second volume should have consecutive pagenumbers, and the last volume should contain an index and the list of figures of all books. Hello, I would like to write a note in the margin next to some framed formula, but I guess that the formula starts a new paragraph and there's too much space left on the top of the frame. Rescaling pages

Hi List, I have a booklet typset on A5 paper with an A5 pagesize (one page per sheet). The printer-shop wants the pages enlarged to A4, so that they can scale them back down to A5 and imposition 2 on an A4 sheet. Don't ask me why they want this. I don't know. Is it possible to easily do this from within context or what are my options? Any help would be appreciated. Sincerely, Olaf

tempdir support in texexec.rb

Hi, Naively, I thought that the --tempdir option would allow the 'temporary' files created/updated at a run of texexec be written to whatever is given as --tempdir=/dir/, but it doesn't work, the files remain in the current directory. Additionally, --output seems to disallow the output be put into another directory (it's always put into `pwd`). Is there a (better?) way to specify where these files should go? What I'd expect is a directory layout like the following: files/ onesource.tex env.tex othersource.tex project.tex out/ project.pdf tmp/ project.tmp project.log project.tui project.tuo mpgraph.mp project-mpgraph.mp as a result of $ cd files/ $ texexec --pdf --tempdir=tmp --output=out/project.pdf project Is /me the only one who desires such a split? - Matthias

switching font encodings

Hello, I have to print plenty of utf-8-encoded entries from a database. I will probably output entries as \contestant{name}{country}{code}, for example \contestant{Đức Đặng}{VNM}{1} I have defined \def\contestant#1#2#3{...#1...} But what's the easiest way to change the encoding to t5 if the country code is VNM and to some other encoding if country code is RUS, SER (or one of other countries using Cyrillic)? I'll probably use \usetypescript[antykwa-torunska][ec] % for most of entries \setupbodyfont[antykwa] I wanted to use XeTeX, but that I figured out/remembered that XeTeX doesn't yet support inclusion of images which I need for this document. Thanks a lot, Mojca (I need this pretty soon.)

Hi all, First, I don't understand this part of the release notes: "supp-mps.tex: * \startuseMPgraphic and \startusableMPgraphic no longer have an argument" Does it mean that we don't have to use \startuseMPgraphic{myMPgrapharg} ... \stopMPgraphic with any myMPgrapharg ? I assume I've missed something... :-\ Second, what's the difference between staticMPfigure and staticMPgraphic and how (and where) can we use it ? Some advice are welcome in this part because I use a lot of MPgraphic and I'm really interested to use staticMPXXX if I can save some processing time... ;) Last but not least: I've posted some days ago a thread "[NTG-context] A page for figures ?"... Hi there, since there might be some users here who edit pages on the wiki and who don't read the 'recent changes' page: you can now say <context source="yes" text="produces"> \your \TeX \code=here </context> this will typeset the source with the <texcode>....</texcode> highlighter/formatter, then output the (optional) text 'produces', and finally renders the already known graphical representation of the source. On another matter, I'm having some alignment issues. And you can change these to anything else (left, middle, right), with absolutely no change. Any idea what is going on here?

Hello, I have often longer equations of the type \startformula\startalign A = b c B = c d E = g h \intertext{Some intermediate text} F = h j G = k l \stopformula\stopalign I would like to keep the alignment (per page), however I also would like to have automatic page breaks inbetween. I can split it manually into two \startformula\startalign ... \stopformula\stopalign blocks, but this I would have to adapt any time I change something, which changes the text length, before that block. Any idea? Additional question: Does anyone know why in the example the "Gauss' law" starts not at the top of the page but roughly two line further down? Tobias PS: I attached an example.

PDF bookmarks problem

regenerating formats

I downloaded the latest ConTeXt and tried regenerating the hyphenation patterns and formats (to get hyphenation with Thomas’ Greek module). The first step texmfstart ctxtools --pat was successful. But sudo texmfstart texexec --make --all (which worked with the last ConTeXt installation) and sudo -H texmfstart texexec --make --all failed with the error message sudo: texmfstart: command not found. Fortunately, sudo texexec --make --all still works, so life goes on. Still, why is this happening? Does it matter that I have the line alias texmfstart='ruby /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/scripts/ context/ruby/texmfstart.rb' in my .profile rather than an executable version of the texmfstart script in my $PATH? If it does, is there a way to set things so that texmfstart is automatically available to the administrator and user whenever a Terminal session is begun? Alan

One has explicitly use \setupTABLE[r][first][bottomframe=off] to switch this frameline off too. So, 1. Is there no general 'frame=off'? 2. Is the first \setupTABLE not really working? I want to do something with & in tables (making it an active column separator). Now I have a macro with two arguments for parameters in Context style: \def\starttablex{\dodoubleargument\dostarttablex} \def\dostarttablex[#1][#2]{% Now for input: \starttable[][] & ... all is well, but for input: \starttable[] & ... the ampersand appears to be eaten up by the double argument expansion. How can I prevent that, letting & end the parameter scanning and using it as the first input? Hans van der Meer

positionoverlays problem

I want to use the positionoverlay mechanism in several different figures (according to the metafun manual "Anchors and layers"). The problem is that the overlays show up in the last figure only, not in the first. If I do not typeset the second overlayseries, the first does appear. It looks like only the last overlayseries is kept. Why is this and how to remedy this?
