Making context produce dvi file.

For one recurring task I first produce a booklet version 5.5. x 8.5in, then a straight pdf 8.5 x 11in, all controlled by modes. The third format is plain text. Others recommend dvi2tty for this conversion. But how do I get Context to produce a dvi file? The Context manual does not make this clear. \setuppapersize[XY] not working properly with landscape orientation

Hello, \setuppapersize[XY] is not working properly when paper orientation is landscape. The following code results in pages of dimensions 29.5 x 29.5 cm: \setuppapersize [XY][A4,landscape] \setuppaper [nx=3,ny=1] \setuparranging [XY] \showframe \starttext second page \page last page \page first page \page content in \page the middle \page three pages \stoptext I also have an additional question: I can use \setupbackgrounds [page] [background=...] for single pages which works perfectly. But how can I place a background figure on the "whole page" (i.e. spanning across the "middle three 'conceptual' pages", which is the "second page" when printed on paper) Thank you, Mojca

Hello all! I'm trying to put labels on figures by following the mlabels manual. I cannot seem to get even a simple example to work because the command \startfigurelabels is not recognized. I am not sure whether I should load a module for this feature. Any help appreciated, Peter

hello I insist in a question: I have: \setupfootnotes[way=bychapter] but it doesnŽt restart the footnote numbering at chapter. But if I write: \setupfootnotes[way=bysection] It does restart each \section. Is the sintax ok? What iŽm doing wrong? The last book iŽve fix it inseriting fake and empty chapters, but now it doesnŽt work. I'm playing with simple files in order to learn metafun. The following small example produces an undefined figure. Hi, the TABLE paramter 'spaceinbetween' doesn't work, if you use it combinations with split=repeat. This is not a beta only problem, as the verson from 08.08.2006 shows the same behaviour. Dear everyone, My Operating System is Ubuntu 6.06,I now use the context combined with cjk 4.6.0 shipped with texlivetest2006-live-20060215.iso to support chinese charaters ,when I use the command: texexex --pdf my_file.tex,I can obtain the ultimate pdf files , but when I use the command: texexec --output=dvipdfm my_file.tex, though I can obtain the ultimate pdf file ,but when I hit the hyperlinks in the pdf files ,the error message happen as follows:"Unknown destination type 'View'".So the pdf file is bad for presentation,why dose this happen? "Update ConTeXt" + standalone distr (Windows)

With my new work computer I finally gave up on my old but working ConTeXt in TeXLive2004 and upgraded for good to the standalone distribution, run on hard disk. One of the new things I found in the Tools menu was the 'Update ConTeXt' command, so today, when I'm *not* in the middle of a urgent project, I decided to try it out. Good news: for the first time in my ConTeXting career, I managed to update my system without reinstalling the whole thing. And the very new ConTeXt version (today's?!) compiles my ever-important manuals without complaints. Somewhat bad news: without fiddling, the updating gets stuck at unzipping after downloading, because 'unzip' is not in the path and that's it then. So it is not quite on 'Windows dummy' level yet, although real close. Note, though, that the standalone distribution I use is about four weeks old, I might be complaining about something that's already fixed! How I solved it: just today, I dug out an old tool and learned that it ain't gonna work without cygwin. Installed Cygwin, dumped the tool in the bin directory - and realized, that my cygwin/bin also contained a file called 'unzip.exe'. Putting it (cygwin/bin) into my Windows path didn't help (not a recommendable operation for standard users anyway), but then I realized that 'standalone' really is standalone and copied 'unzip.exe' to where my ctxtools.bat lives, i.e. \ConText\usr\local\context\tex\texmf-mswin\bin - and presto, the update went through. It seems to me that it even generates formats on the fly, so with one mouse-click I can get the most up-to-date ConTeXt. How I think this might be solved: In the texmf-mswin\bin directory, there is a 'gunzip.exe'. If I remember correctly, gunzip is fairly simple to use, so this might just mean a change somewhere in the stand-alone package so update would use gunzip to unpack the update files. Or, as it seems to me that different types of 'unzip.exe's are public domain stuff, just include that in the standalone distribution and everything works (no other changes were needed, just bringing 'unzip.exe' into the correct directory. I really like the standalone distribution. Of the many ConTeXt variations I've used until today's date, this year's standalone has been the most Windows-minded and most Windows-friendly in many ways. It works out-of-the-box (has less options to uncheck than Word), seems to live happily even under C:\Program Files and has a logic that I as a non-programming Windows power user find easy to follow. I no longer need to refer to the manual to get as far as to compile a test pdf with standard postscript fonts, now I can concentrate on the layout, not the innards of TeX. So, even though there are slight blemishes and wrinkles to be ironed out like this update thing, ConTeXt in Windows is definitely becoming a nice package for those of us who find that Word just doesn't do what we want. :-) Mari

index formatting

Hi all, there is a problem with index formatting (I'm using the latest beta, but have no idea if this was always the case or has been introduced recently). My index is in two columns (the default, I believe). If an item has several references, the lines doesn't break, but continues into the margin or into column 2. Lines do break after the en-dash at index ranges, so it looks like the space after the comma is non- breakable. It's difficult to make a minimal example for that, but what I see is this: Virgil 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 instead of Virgil 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 Best Thomas

the closing bracket (structuring syntax)

Hi, in XML and alike there is a concept of dedicated start/stop in formatting: <begin heading> ... <end heading > <begin footnote> ... <end footnote > <begin italic> ... <end italic> But in ConTeXt/TeX we have always the same closing syntax "}". That makes reading the code not easier. Is there a workaround to define the closing more precisely (like the examples above), so that finding a "}" in a ConTeXt source lets me distinguish what it's about? But in such a way that the file still can be processed as a regular ConTeXt file? Steffen

String single quote in \tt

Hi, I just noticed that in the preprocessing manual, the single quotes are wrong. Look at the output of \starttext \starttyping let a = 'string' ; \stoptyping \mono{ let a = 'string' ;} {\tt let a = 'string' ;} \stoptext The singlequote character is converted into rightquote. This "feature" is also present in plain tex and Latex. rightquote string rightquote does not look good in program listings. Isn't there some way to turn off these intelligent quotes in \tt? Aditya

Thank you Mojca. The main reason for asking is that I intend to try to convince my employer to adopt ConTeXt as a tool for producing technical documents. In my view, ConTeXt is obviously far superior to MS Word, which we use today, for that purpose. Since ConTeXt represents a way of producing documents that is very different from what our managers are used to, it will, however, be important that ConTeXt doesn't appear more complex than it actually is. A way to hide the abundance of intermediate files from the user would clearly be helpful in that respect. I will give the tools you suggest a try, maybe they are good enough. I wish I was wrong, but as far as I know you can't do it (yet?), although there have been many requests for it. To remove unneeded files you can use ctxtools --purge [--all] (texutill --purge[all] if you don't have the ruby variant installed yet) although I know that that's not quite the same. (I know some people in LaTeX world who use make files to copy/remove files.) Define doifoneelse

Hi, I want to define a macro, \doifoneelse, that checks if the first argument is 1 or not. It should work for decimals and strings also. So, \doifoneelse{1}{a}{b} gives a \doifoneelse{1.5}{a}{b} gives b \doifonelese{string}{a}{b} gives b Can someone suggest how to define this? Thanks, Aditya

Hallo! I have a problem with indenting. The paragraph following the \placefigure is not indented and I find not any way to achieve this. I'm learning page rearrangements and cannot figure out why the following small example doesn't work (it's similar to those in the cont-eni.pdf manual, fig 3.22). Intermediate files in subdirectory

Hello, Is there any way to specify where the intermediate files and log files generated by context end up? Ideally, I would like my working directory to contain tex and pdf files only. All other files could be stored in a subdirectory. That way all these extra files are kept out of sight but close at hand in case you need them. placepublications not obeying grid placement

Hello Taco, The following example is taken from the manual, just a grid is added around it. I don't use grid typesetting very often, but I just noticed that \placepublications confuses proper placement of citatons on the grid. Is this difficult to fix? (I temporary created an ugly patch to fix it, so there's no hurry.) beta: problems including a figure without providing explicit dimensions

Hello, I have no idea which version I had installed before that, but after upgrading to the latest beta and using an image filename.pdf the following creates an error: \externalfigure[filename] (worked OK before), while \externalfigure[filename][width=3cm] works OK. Here's the log: figures : dimensions of KI are determined externally Error: PDF version 1.6 -- xpdf supports version 1.5 (continuing anyway) Warning: pdftex.exe (file ./img/uni-lj.pdf): pdf inclusion: found pdf version < 1.6>, but at most version <1.5> allowed <./img/uni-lj.pdf Warning: pdftex.exe (file ./img/uni-lj.pdf): pdf inclusion: Page Group detected which pdfTeX can't handle. Hello, in my scripts i use different kinds of figure, defined as floats cloned from the original ConTeXt figure: \definefloat[afigure][afigures][figure] \definefloat[bfigure][bfigures][figure] In my script environment i use different setups for figure, afigure and bfigure that are not shown here. Using cloning, all figures use the same counter, which is nice. But how can i get all figures into the same listoffigures, so that i can use only one \placelistof*** instead of three? resolved Font problem

Dear all, By installing TeX from the beginning and changing to new font family, "CFF: Invalid caracter" error was disappeared. I think that there are some problems in some korean fonts But the same file had a little problem in Powerbook G4(OS X 10.4.7). I think that it is not the problem in XeTeX, ConTeXt, but in the configuration in Terminal or in the system. Although I have little knowledge about Unix, I'll try to fix it. multiple bibliographies

Dear all (and esp. Taco), in March 2005, there was a discussion about having multiple bibliographies in one document, very much like with the LaTeX package chapterbib. I may be missing something obvious, but I'm wondering whether this is now possible with Taco's module. Maybe a bit of background, and please tell me if you think this is a stupid idea: every term, I have to prepare lists of references for my several classes, and there usually is a lot of repetition and overlap. So I'm dreaming of having one big bibtex database and producing the lists via assorted \nocite commands. But i usually split up these bibliographies into several sections, and I want all items numbered in sequence, so I have in my source: \section{One} \nocite[myfirst] \nocite[mysecond] \placepublications \section{Two} \nocite[mythird] \nocite[myfourth] \placepublications to get this output: A. One [1] myfirst publication [2] mysecond publication B. Two [3] mythird publication [4] myfourth publication Is this reasonable? feasible? Or should I just use the old approach and copy/paste the same references into \itemize lists? Help and opinions appreciated! Thomas

TeX trigger in MP macro

Hi all, Currently I am using \startuniqueMPgraphic{foo} ... if (\DbgFill=0) : fill whatever fi ... \stopuniqueMPgraphic in my MP graphics. \DbgFill (0|1) is just a trigger, which prevents filling in case of visual debugging. Instead of always writing this 'long' form, it should be possible to use a self written mp-macro instead. But my naive approach def dbg_fill (expr p) = if (\DbgFill=0) : fill p ; fi enddef ; doesn't work. I get >> DbgFill ! Unknown relation will be considered false. How do I realize this trigger inside pure MP code and set it outside in TeX? The trigger should be global and can change during runtime. Any help is welcome. Greetings, Peter

Footnote Setup

Hi, I would like to setup the footnotes so that the footnote in the textbody shows slanted (or just different) to the rest of the text and in sans serif, to avoid some confusion with exponents. So far what I have tried, does not seem to work. In setupfoonotes, style and numbercommand seem to only affect the style for the footnote at the bottom of the page, but not the footnote inside the textbody. Any ideas on how to achieve this? preliminary support for tex4ht is there (for ConTeXt to HTML conversion)

Just to let you know: if you want to convert your ConTeXt documents into HTML, you can try to install tex4ht and replace the old files with new ones: http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~gurari/TeX4ht/bugfixes.html (newt4ht.zip) It works OK with the old perl texexec.pl, the ruby version causes some problems, but none of them are fatal. You need DVI as an intermediate format, so if you use texexec.rb, you have to add \setupoutput[dvi] at the top of the document, otherwise tex4ht won't be able to create HTML out of it. You can compile a document with "htcontext filename" or by manually running texexec --use=tex4ht filename tex4ht filename t4ht filename I cannot give you extensible information about how fonts are set up. In MikTeX it worked out-of-the-box, however I didn't play yet to make it work under the stand-alone distribution, but the following link might be of some importance: http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~gurari/TeX4ht/mn32.html Support is not that extensive yet, but sections, external images (as long as they reside in the same directory and if they are in PNG/JPG), natural tables, itemisations, "place[something]", buffers, footnotes, very basic frames, math, ... are somehow working. (The big difference with math is that in LaTeX it is changed into bitmap and in ConTeXt it's currently text-based, so you'll get weird results when using \sum or similar, but I think that that is configurable, so if you manage to play enough with it you might be able to get formulas translated into MATHML, which will be displayed nicely in firefox for example.) And I guess that conversion into an OpenOffice document is very similar. I only asked the author to rewrite the pieces of code that caused problems before and to add some additional basic support to context.4ht, so if you have other requests, you should contact the author of tex4ht, not me !!! He adds support based on user requests (his first response was: nobody asked for improving ConTeXt support so far), so if you want to have better support implemented, feel free to ask him. Adding full support for ConTeXt is a bit too optimistic, but stepwise improvements are possible. Comments wellcome. (I currently have some problems with my computer, so I might not be very responsive to additional questions, but I'll try to fix the computer ASAP. Once that I manage to make it work inside stand-alone distr., I'll report how I did it if nobody else does that before me.) Mojca

However, if there are two ranges (like in the example below), then the index incorrectly assumes that the first \registerfrom command in the tuo file corresponds to the \registerto command. Since the ending [t] reference for the first \stopregister command is on the same page as the first one, the whole section outputting a \registerto command to the tuo file is skipped. Instead, how about making the code check to see if we have a range that ends on the same page as it started? If it does, then just insert a \registerpage command instead of a \registerfrom command. I've corrected this in the perl version (I had an old version of ConTEXt before today, otherwise I would have worked on the ruby version). I also added support for nesting ranges, which I then discovered weren't supported anyway. (I also had to change the sort order on @RegisterEntries so that [f] and [t] entries would be consecutive, instead of all the [f] entries preceding the [t] entries, but it looks like that was fixed already). Currently I know more LaTeX than anything else for that, but from what I gather to use ConTeXt in full extent I should typeset things directly in TeX or use MathML. So far I've been some LaTeX-like stuff and it was worked fine, but know I want to do more complet layouts that would involve LaTeX style arrays to align equations in several lines. So, what would you guys would recommend? Thanks, Pepe

The latest ConTeXt fails at the very end of its run, when I try to process a source file that has some Greek using Thomas' ancientgreek module. Hallo! I'll try asking my question a little bit different: With \setupnumber[formula] [number=davidsnumber] the origin formulanumber(what is its name?) will be overwritten and replaced by davidsnumber. But with \setupnumber[figure] [number=davidsnumber] the origin figurenumbering remains untouched and davidsnumber gets an additionl counter. So there are the following questions: - Why is this different behaviour? - How can I replace the figurecounter by davidsnumber such, that captions and figuretables will use this new counter? - Are the origin formula/figure-counters compatible with counters defined by \definenumber? Hello everybody, I want to add a clock which shows the system time to a pdf file. And I have read the ``art-calc.pdf'' and ``mwidget-p.pdf'' to find some approaches but failed shamely. I am indeed new at ConTeXt and JavaScript. Before I'm shocked by ConTeXt, I used LaTeX for about 2 years, so I'm confused with the conventions between ConTeXt and LaTeX.
