texexec command line switches missing in ruby version

Hi all, the ruby version of texexec is missing some command line switches I have been using. I'm missing --result (however, I could live without that) and especially --mode and --passon. Are there any workarounds? Also, texexec doesn't complain when given a command line switch, which it doesn't understand. Regards, - Ralf

does metafun require texexec --final?

I was trying experiments with the file below, changing r from 1cm to 10cm or vice versa, then rerunning texexec and looking at the pdf. But the pdf changes only the second time that I run texexec (and each time, texexec runs metafun for the embedded graphic). However, the pdf changes right away if I give --final to texexec. So, is --final a requirement when using metafun, or am I hacking around a problem I've caused by leaving something out? mp to pdf inline conversion adds whitespace (2006.09.26 beta)

I'm using the 2006.09.26 beta, and noticed an extra gap before some external metapost figures. Hi all, If I use: \startitemize[m,packed] \item 三个小矮人 (some chinese characters) \item Die drei Männlein im Walde \stopitemize I get more space between the number and the text in the chinese line as in the latin line. The difference is .3-.4em depending on the fonts. How can I avoid this? Greetings Lutz

Sorry, I skimmed the TeXbook for an hour but couldn't find how to do simple calculations in TeX... Very strange bug related to textbackground

I have been fighting with this one for ages, and have now narrowed down the culprit, but I do not understand why it happens. However, if I define a totally unrelated textbackground (uncomment the third line), both captions veer off upwards, apparently a distance related to the number of lines in the title (play with the dorecurse numbers to see the effects). It doesn't seem to matter what the background is called, whether or not it is ever used, or what parameters it is given. I have no idea why something seemingly unrelated is having this effect; some reuse of a variable or unreset value somewhere? I would be really grateful if someone could [tell me how to] fix this. staticMPfigures can overrun output streams

The following minimal file overruns the available output streams (version 2006.08.08 and context live): \starttext \dorecurse{16}{\startstaticMPfigure{\recurselevel} fill fullcircle scaled 1cm withcolor red; \stopstaticMPfigure} \stoptext At the end are the last few lines of the log. Here are the last few lines of the last few lines: ! Bad number (16). \openMPgraphicfile ...immediate \openout \MPwrite \MPgraphicfile .mp\relax \... After experiments and digging in the TeXbook I'm pretty sure the cause is as follows: The macro \openMPgraphicfile (supp-mps.tex) constructs the name of a new output stream and allocates a new write to it: \donetrue \@EA\@EA\csname newwrite\endcsname\csname\@@MPG\@@MPG\MPgraphicfile\endcsname Then \MPwrite is set to this stream number: \@EA\let\@EA\MPwrite\csname\@@MPG\@@MPG\MPgraphicfile\endcsname And then it's opened: \immediate\openout\MPwrite\MPgraphicfile.mp\relax which is where TeX complains about the bad number (16). The number gets that high because each static figure goes into a separate file, and each file requires a \newwrite. I thought it would not run out of streams because the allocation is all enclosed in \bgroup..\egroup (in \startstaticMPgraphic) and the \egroup would pop the write-stream allocation stack. But no such luck. The workhorse \alloc (p.347 of the TeXBook) uses a \global assignment to the control sequence. Here's a possible solution that works here but is a hack and may make unwarranted assumptions about control-sequence names. \textext can fail in definitions in \startMPinclusions

Another test file for metafun. I know that textext doesn't work in loops. I don't understand how it's implemented enough to know why, but is the reason for its not working in loops the same as the reason it doesn't work in included definitions (related to static analysis of the code)? The following file gives an example of what I mean. It gives a page saying "unknown", but if one uses draw \textext{directly} directly (the commented-out line) then it works as expected. I see the same behavior with \sometxt{}. The log file says (1.tex is the test file): system(mpost -progname=metafun -mem=metafun 1-mpgraph)...executed. Doing that by hand to get PDF gives a figure containing "unknown": $ mpost -progname=metafun -mem=metafun 1-mpgraph $ mptopdf 1-mpgraph.1 But "texexec --mpgraphic 1.mp" produces the right figure. So why does \startMPcode run the wrong command? Oh I think I know why mpost is being called with \startMPcode: It gets fooled by the label hidden inside the def, so it thinks that there is no need to run the more complicated texexec comment. I tried two hacks^H^H^H^Htests to check this: 1. Added \forceMPTEXgraphictrue right after \starttext, and then the figure came out fine. Not sure whether this method will work if there is more than one figure (\ifforceMPTEXgraphic might get reset to false after each figure). 2. Added an explicit \textext{} in the figure: \startMPcode label(\textext{jj},(1in,1in)); yy; \stopMPcode and the yy produces the right text. Though I still don't know why the staticMPfigure doesn't need either hack. -Sanjoy

metafun: verbatimtex coming too late?

The other one, produced by the drawtext macro, comes out in 12pt. This is all with context 2006.08.08. I tested it on the live context, but the transcript says "figure texweb-fig.pdf can not be found". A possible solution is to put the verbatimtex at the beginning of the mp file or after the input mp-grph, making it like this: verbatimtex \global \loadfontfileoncetrue \setupbodyfont [7pt] etex; def drawtext = label(btex In drawtext() macro. etex, origin); enddef; beginfig(1); drawtext; label(btex Inline in the figure. etex, (2in,0)); endfig; but does that break other assumptions? displayed formula confuses parshape around figure

In the following small example, two squares are cut out of the long paragraph. The first is where the external figure belongs and goes, so no problem with that. But the second removed square is after the displayed equation, and it shouldn't be removed. If I comment out the formula, then the paragraph shape is fine. If I make add a \placeformula before the \startformula, then the equation number goes where it should (below the right edge of the figure), but the area below it is still whitespace. Is it a bug or is there an option to make startformula not interfere with the paragraph shape calculation? trouble with \startMPinclusions[+]

The small test file below uses \startMPinclusions[+], but it produces "TeX capacity exceeded" from what looks like an endless loop. The error msgs are below the file. This is with context 2006.08.08 21:51, and the live ConTeXt (2006.09.17) gives the same error. [I was trying to test whether I could replicate my standalong metapost programming style within metafun. I often have: u := 1cm; % a couple figures using this u:=1cm unit size; beginfig(1) fill ... endfig; etc. % now a few figures with a different unit size u := 1.5cm; beginfig(10) fill ... endfig; ... So I wanted to see whether I could use \startMPinclusions[+] midway through the source file, in between several \start(stop)reusableMPgraphic blocks, to change u between figures. But the error msgs intervened. Anyway, here's the file. I'd asked arxiv.org, the wonderful open-access preprint server used in most fields of physics, which accepts most varieties of TeX in source form (and non-TeX formats in PDF): Are there plans for arxiv to support ConTeXt submissions? One could try a PDF-only submission, but it will probably be rejected as coming from TeX (for which arxiv wants the source)? For almost 20 years I've used plain TeX but got weary doing a lot of page layout by hand, so decided to skip over LaTeX to ConTeXt. With their permission, I include their response. Hello all, Has anyone used ConTeXt to perform interlinearization? I need to typeset glosses similar in appearance to those produced by LaTeX's gb4e.sty <http://www.essex.ac.uk/linguistics/clmt/latex4ling/gb4e>. For example, from the gb4e manual: \begin{exe} \ex \gll Wenn jemand in die W\"uste zieht ... \\ If someone in the desert draws and lives ... \\ \trans `if one retreats to the desert and ... Hi Hans and others, I have tried to find the solution of the problem described by minimal example bellow without success. (Parsing XML database cont-en.xml, every 'cd:command' with 'type=environment' have to be defined with 'start' prefix. As far as I could check it is done OK. But \start.... commands are not known for \shortsetups.) It is needed for Beginners' manual. Please can you have a look at it? Help with mswincontext installation

After upgrading MikTeX, ConTeXt is working no more. Since I'm not using LaTeX anymore (ConTeXt rules !!! ) I decided to use only the mswincontext package. Install New Chinese Fonts on ConTeXt using UTF8

Hello everybody, Time to disturb you again. :) I've search the maillist and the internet to find a solution, but all are about htsong.ttf, htfs.ttf, etc. In fact, I don't think these fonts are nice. I download some other beautiful free fonts and use Hans' ``ttf2uni.rb'' to create the tfm files, enc files, map file and afm file, then I modified the ``font-chi.tex'' file, replacing all UTF relating fontsynonyms and map files to what I've generated. Doesn't work any way. CM Super HF Bright -- encoding?

Good evening. I wish to typeset a document using Computer Modern Sans Bright font. There is HFBright package, and CM-Super package. The first one doesn't include all letters used in the Czech Typography, while the other does. So I'd like to use it. Now, what of encodings supported by the package should I use? I tried: \mainlanguage[cz] \enableregime[il2] \loadmapfile[cm-super-t1.map] \definefontsynonym [Serif] [ebmr10][encoding=cm-super-t1] but all accented letters were spoiled. I've got the same result when I tried to substitute "cm-super-t1" with "ec", "ec-lm", and "t1". What mapfile and what encoding should I use? Your thankful Michal Kvasnicka

Thank you very much, Thomas. Yes, it also works perfectly for me now. I also had this problem for a while but only got to looking at it seriously yesterday. I was thinking in the direction of criterium=all but I was looking at the setuppublications command where it has a different meaning. Bib module and sectionblocks

Using the t-bib module I can't get the numbered cite option to work with the sectionblocks \startfrontmatter and the like. When I put the publication list inside one of the blocks I get the number only inside that block. In the other blocks the result is [ ]. If I put the publication list outside of any blocks the number appears only in the bodymatter sectionblock. Is this correct behaviour? And how can I fix the problem? LilyPond module

Hi there! I'm trying to fix the LilyPond module for LilyPond 2.9.x (find my current version attached). One of the problems is, that the EPS/PDF produced by LilyPond is always too big (doesn't obey the ordered dimensions, but is uniformly upscaled). The code after line 250 should shift the notes to the left, if the line is wider than ordered - that worked in previous versions, because it was only wider, if there was text in front of the score. So, if I calculate the scaling factor (ca. 1.5), how can I use it in the module? Sorry, I still can't code in TeX... (At the same time I try to get answers on the LilyPond list how to avoid the scaling.) Greetlings from Lake Constance! Hello, In my layout settings I have the following: \setupcaptions[ headstyle=\ss\bf,style=\tfx ] \setupcombinations[ style={\tfx\em} ] Hoping that the captions in the figures and in the combinations would have the same size, but they don't. Any ideas why this might be? Thanks, Pepe

Hi, After switching to `XeConTeXt' my file with MP graphics (which ran fine before) results in errors. I include a .mp-file like: \startuseMPgraphic{dia1} input Diagram1 ; \stopuseMPgraphic \placefigure{Comment}{\externalfigure[Diagram1.1]} When I run ConTeXt a file test-mprun.mp is created containing: [...] defaultfont:="'Minion Pro:mapping=tex-text; +onum; +pnum'"; defaultscale:=12.0pt/10pt; [...] which of course is responsible for the errors. Dear all, I have tried updating ConTeXt with the result that any ConTeXt document results in the above error message :( I have re-installed everything (I hope - deleted teTeX from /usr/ local/, and the ipackages folder from the home directory, then re-installed everything using iinstaller) to no avail. I tried both the ConTeXt beta and the stable version. Any ideas what's wrong? Full log file is below. I'm pleased as punch with the new bib module and have been writing my new lists with it all day. There is one thing that I could not make work, and I wonder if it is possible at all. I have 2 entries: [1] Some collected volume [2] Some article, in: a journal [reprinted in [1]]. Is it possible to refer back to item [1] automatically, by sticking the "reprinted in" in a "note" field in the database? I tried a number of combinations of \crossref or so, but couldn't get this to work. Suggestions welcome! Thomas

I do not get any bar over "a". math-eul.tex says %D This used to be very hackish; it brought in text %D accents from the well-matched Bitstream Charter. %D But now, these characters don't exist.
