I couldn't find anything on the wiki or in the documentation: I have defined a special index which will typeset numbers in bold: \setupregister[index][imp][pagestyle=bold] which I invoke like \index[imp::]{modernity} How can I get a register range to use this special style? I tried something like \startregister[imp][signi][signifie]{\em signifié} but get errors "missing csname." What am i overlooking? Thanks Thomas

textrules

Hi all, I want two paragraphs separated by a rule which has the same distance to the preceding and the following line (yes, I know that this is fuzzy, it's just the optical impression that counts). I can't get my head around the \setuptextrules command, which should allow to do this. I tried this: \def\smallblank{\blank[line]} \def\bigblank{\blank[2*line]} \setuptextrules[inbetween=\bigblank, before=\bigblank ] but I realize that the before, after, and inbetween keywords either don't do what I want or plain do nothing. Could somebody explain what their expected behavior is (and if I should use a different approach than textrule?). Thanks Thomas

Hi all, Considering the fact that I have no answer for the thread "[NTG-context] Presentation style: customizing the right interaction menu (list-related thread)", I decided to reformulate my problem... I've also tried some setup with combinedlist but nothing works... Could someone explain why criterium as no effect... Moreover, I don't understand what coupling= on|off does... Renaud

Fitz, MuPDF, Apparition

While downloading latest ghostscript, I found some news at www.ghostscript.com. At ccxvii.net/apparition there are MuPDF and Fitz where MuPDF is a pdf parser for Fitz, a new graphics library. Apparition is a pdf viewer that seems very good (I try it and it is clean and quick.) Does anybody know something about them ? luigi

url compared to hyperref

When using hyperref and displaying the resulting PDF in xpdf, I see links that are active. I tried achieving the same with useURL, url and goto, but the resulting links aren't active in xpdf. I have to use acroread to have active links. Is there a compelling reason for this behavior? Thanks, Marko

Any idea about copy or clone fieldstack?

Hello everyone, I want to display dynamic system time on each page of my presentation. Displaying system time can be manipulated by JavaScript but, a field can be shown only once. So I used clone field and it works very well for me. But when I want to change the font (xxx presents the variable that gets the field): ------------------------------------------------ xxx.textFont = font.LucidaBright ; ------------------------------------------------ it can be compiled successfully, but when I open it with acrobat reader, there are many errors from javascript console. So I think that JS don't know the font, and I don't know how to embed the font into pdf file and make JS knows it. Then I turned to use field stacks. I use MetaPost to draw some needles and use JS to set_Field the fieldstack to the correct frame. But when I want to display the second clock, it seems that I should write another JS code to control the other fieldstack. So is there some command that clones the fieldstack just like \copyfield? Or how to assign the font of the field as I like? Hi all, I'm new to the list, although I'm working with ConTeXt since last spring. I have been trying to find everything I need on my own, but there is a problem I cannot solve at this moment. The thing is I'm writing my PhD thesis, and I would like to have not only a "List of figures", but also a "List of algorithms" and a "List of formulas". Is there a simple way to create a "\placeXXX" command similar to the \placefigure and a "\placelistofXXXX" similar to the "\placelistoffigures"? I suppose they can be programmed, but I'd rather not to start learning how to program in ConTeXt right now. Thanks in advance Angel-Luis Garcia

I have a book with parts and chapters; figures in the chapters are numbered 1.1, 2.1 etc. but sometimes a part has a figure in it as well, before the chapters start. The desired numbering for such figures is to follow the Part numbers, and be in capitalised roman numerals (in other words, Figure II would be the figure in the intro of Part 2). So I define a new clone of figure called Partfigure, and give it the necessary setups to make the numbering come out in cap roman; and I thought the easiest way of managing the number itself would be just to increment it each time \part is called. (Not every part has a figure.) But I can't seem to get the number to come out when I place the figure. I also tried using ownnumber=true in the Partfigure setup and then feeding it the value {2} in the \placefloat call but that wouldn't compile. Where did I go wrong? Hi all, [maybe this is a bit off topic and you think that the Metapost mailing list is the right place for such stuff. But I have quit this list quite some time ago, as there was more spam than regular posts. Try to forgive me... :D ] After buying the 'Metafont' manual, I'm now playing around with some mp macro programming. The problem in the attached example is, that the 'draw' variants of the [hv]line macro always work with a *fixed* pen size of 1pt (and I can't figure out why). I'm clueless.. multipage tables

Hi, I must set two-page tables. The top row contains headings for the columns 2 to 4. The left column contains the hours of the day (01:00, 02:00 ... 24:00). The overall width is textwidth. Bug in ctxtools --purge

Hi Hans, ctxtools --purge file.tex does not behave the same as ctxtools --purge file (no extension). This causes texexec --purge filename to misbehave. U3D and presentation

Hi all, I have tried to embed an U3D model within a presentation of mine and pre-original interactions inhibit the U3D interaction... The problem is described by http://www.nibua-r.org/ConTeXt/devel/context3d.tgz How to inhibit locally the interaction setted by pre-original ? I have tried to enclose my u3d model in a \framed and the result is that the 3D annotation is now activated but I can't interact with it since a click leads to get the next page... TIA Renaud

bug in beta: extra \else

Hi all, there is some deep bug that was discovered translating Beginners manual. Let take single chapter e.g. ma-cb-cz-alignments.tex With today beta I got .log attached (error ! Extra \else) This will appear in both modes screen and normal. Interesting is that no error appears in context 2006-05-28. In context 2006-09-10 this error appears only in normal mode. Screen mode is OK. Vit P.S. Today's beta shows even more problems: - inside typebuffer: only '\dochar {225}' instead of \'a in latin2 - some metapost graphics is wrong But I suggest to solve them step by step. This is pdfTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.40.0-beta-20060213 (Web2C 7.5.5) (format=cont-en 2006.10.10) 10 OCT 2006 23:50 entering extended mode \write18 enabled. %&-line parsing enabled. Unable to expand \in[refX]

I want keep track of which other sections any given section refers to by creating lists like \fromrefA => refX,refY,refZ \fromrefB => refY,refZ ... My plan is to achieve this by writing commands like \ignore{1.2} \appendtovaluelist{fromrefA}{refX} \ignore{1.4} \appendtovaluelist{fromrefA}{refY} \ignore{1.3} \appendtovaluelist{fromrefA}{refZ} \ignore{1.4} \appendtovaluelist{fromrefB}{refY} \ignore{1.3} \appendtovaluelist{fromrefB}{refZ} ... to a file that is subsequently processed on the following run. Here references refX, refY and refX refer to sections 1.2, 1.4 and 1.3, respectively. The section numbers will be ignored by ConTeXt but by including this information the lists can be ordered by section number by simply sorting the file between the calls to texexec. However, this simple way to get sorted lists turns out to be too tricky for me. I am simply unable to write the section numbers to the file. To be more specific I am not able to expand \in[refX] in such a way that the resulting section number is written to the file. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Fredrik

Dear all, Following the thread on layers: (1. thanks to all) 2. I use ConTeXt for many things, but quantitatively mostly for slides. Powerpoint is rude in its graphic abiltities but it has two features ConTeXt has not. First, you can draw on the screen. Second, you can import and stack images as you prefer. I'm not interested in the first feature, as I use a specific sw for drawing, and then import the result. But I am (sometimes) interested in the second one (let's call it "compositing"). In ConTeXt one can evidently use layers to exactly place and stack everything as needed (images, text). But, especially while preparing slides (a book worth the efforts indeed), it can be tedious to wrote all the code stuff. So, I created a minimal app in python using tkinter which allows to manipulate visually areas ("boxes" in the app terms) which can the be filled with images. The app has a second window which continuously updates with conTeXt code generated by the gui. The idea is that the user prepares a visual layer, then switches to code window, copy the generated code and paste it in the .tex file. Finally code is definitively modified it in the source, as usual. It's very simple, I've tested and it seems to work. But it can be buggy. I don't know if it can of any interest to anyone in the communities. In any case, comments related to whatsoever aspect are welcome. Actually, I've not documented it but it should be obvious. pgf now supports context

Hi, The new version of pgf (1.09) comes with Context support! If you are using the stable version of context, you can download the 1.09 release from the pgf sourceforge website. However, Till Tantau has modified pgf so that it also works with the latest beta. Right now, this is only available through CVS http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=142562 For those who do not know about pgf, it is a graphical system similar to metapost. It runs from inside tex (I think using specials). It is not as powerful as metapost, but has better support for some tasks than metapost. Hi all, As requested some time ago on this list, Asymptote 1.14 (a modern MetaPost replacement) now supports alternate TeX engines via the -tex option: -tex engine TeX engine ("latex|pdflatex|tex|pdftex|none") ["latex"] Other engines (presumably including ConTeXt) can easily be added in settings.cc. General affine transforms and clipping of labels is now implemented via PostScript or PDF specials (as appropriate). So if ConTeXt can handle TeX specials, adding support for it should be straightforward. We also input the tex graphics and picture packages; presumably something like them is accessible to ConTeXt too. absolute positioning of figures

Hi to all, In case of presentations sometimes one has to combine many figures in the page, maybe overlapping for some parts. Something very easy in powerpoint. What's the best technique? Taking a look at the wiki and ot "It's in the details" manual it seems that layers, which can be placed according to absolute positions, are the ConTeXt solution to the problem. Is it so? I was in fact considering to create a simple python GUI app to allow a visual control on position of figures on a page, outputting ConTeXt code to be copied and pasted. aux files organization

Hi to all, compiling a conTeXt file means generating 6 auxiliary files. This means that that if I have 4 related .tex files in a folder I will have 24 aux files. Is there a way to specify a folder where to place them in order not to clutter my project folder? (The ideal would be that the aux would be put in a subfolder of the folder containing the tex file). Is this file updated by hand? Who does this? Hans alone? I guess, the commands shown in texshow are depending on the same file. Btw. for me (MSIE 5.5) the texshow page is not working. I see the left frame and the right only for home, help and special. For all commands (server or dns not found). With wget I got all the stuff, but the language is sort of random. Sometimes I got en, sometimes other. May be I got the last selected language. Wolfgang

Lists of cross-references

Hello, I'm working on functions for displaying lists of cross-references between documents and I'm therefore a bit curious to here if others have similar needs. If there are, maybe I should try to make a real module and not just at private hack. Maybe modules for this already exist. A substantial part of my work as software engineer I spend writing and maintaining documents, e.g. 'User requirement specification', 'Functional specification', 'Design specification', 'Test specification', 'Test plan', 'Test results', 'Project plan'. Between these documents are often large number of cross-references, e.g. functions in the FS refer to requirements in the URS, tests in the TS refer to functions in the FS and requirements URS and so on and so on. Make page number appear on top of image

Hi, I want to combine some papers into a single pdf file "with page numbers". I am including the papers using \copypages[filename] However, the pagenumber is not printed when the paper is a scanned copy. I guess this is because the page number is printed and then the scanned image is printed on top of it, thereby hiding the page number. How can I force the page number to appear on top? Hello, Is there a smart way to create a commalist? I want to get the equivalent of \setparameter[namespace][listname={item1,item2,item3}] but be able to append one item at the time, like \append{namepace}{listname}{item1} \append{namepace}{listname}{item2} \append{namepace}{listname}{item3} I have tired this: \def\append#1#2#3{ \fullexpandoneargafter\doifemptyelse{\getvariable{#1}{#2}} {\edef\tmp{#3}} {\edef\tmp{\getvariable{#1}{#2},#3}} \setvariables[#1][#2={\tmp}]} but it only works for one list. color question

If this is OT, my apologies to all. I am currently using ConTEXt to produce PDFs with a colored background which I specify using R G B settings. Unfortunately, this background does not look the same when others open the files on their computers. Is there anything I can do at my end to correct this? Alan

Bibtex and "et al"

Hi all, The 3dartwork module can be found here: http://www.nibua-r.org/ConTeXt/devel/3dartwork.tgz Someone could maybe process test-3dartwork on a windows machine and report if there is trouble... Warning: The use of the "piping" syntax is only possible with the last pdfTeX (thanks to Taco). I use pdfTeX 3.141592-1.40.0-beta-20060928-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.5) to process test-3dartwork. What I need now is: 1. How to call \input "| ls" (for example) from t-3dartwork instead of test-3dartwork ? 2. To ConTeXt gurus: Could you check if my use of ConTeXt is "clean"... (I will rewrite my rough view.rb... ;) ) 3. To ConTeXt's community: feature requests ? I've seen that octaga has released a x3d plugin for acrobat (included with the last octaga player for windows). Natural table + interlinespacing

I'd love natural tables except for one aspect that drives me crazy: How do I diminish the interlinespacing in my table? That is, I want the lines in the multiline cells to be closer together. The overall interlinespacing is default, i.e. I haven't used \setupinterlinespace in the setup of my document. Mari (with a "#¤#"¤ table that doesn't want to fit on its page)

Float references in a register

Is it possible to have float references (i.e. Table 1.1) alongside page numbers in a register? I've never come across it before, but I've just been asked to produce an index which has entries like: coverage measurement tools 176-177, Table 6.5 I have looked through core-reg without much illumination. I wonder if I can use \writetoregister but experiments thus far haven't been successful. Is this sort of thing supported/supportable? Thanks, Duncan

Problems mapping Xml into ConTeXt

Hi everyone, I am attempting to map some XML into ConTeXt as described in the manual "XML in ConTeXt". Essentially we have a bunch of tagged text (the XML "loosely" based on some of the XHTML tags) from which we want to produce PDF letters for dispatch (via email, post etc). I am having particular problems implementing the following commands: - \underbar, \underbars, \overstrike, \overstrikes, \low, \high and \lohi I was expecting that they would all easily be defined using the \defineXMLgrouped [name] {command} element mapping. There is probably something very simple that I have not setup correctly since I am sure that this has been attempted before and would appreciate pointers as to where I am going wrong. The following attempts at mapping element to \underbar illustrates my problem which also seems largely applicable to the <strike>, and mapping: - 1. This def of does nothing ... \defineXMLgrouped [u] \underbar 2. This def of also does nothing ... \defineXMLgrouped [u] {\groupedcommand{\underbar}{}} 3. This def of underlines the 1st character only ... \defineXMLenvironment [u] {\bgroup\underbar} {\egroup} 4. In the mailing list, there is a suggestion that \underbar does not allow line-breaking, so I also tried the following. Hans, In s-mod-??, the file name is simply typeset as \tt\Modulefile. This prevents an _ (underscore) in filenames. Can this be changed to \filename{\Modulefile} for a more robust solution? Aditya
