Hi all, I am trying to add footnotes to a table but need for them to be aligned on the left (flush) edge of the table. I've tried everything I can think of but I'm stuck (with deadlines looming). Below is a quick example.... Hi, the following code \startMPinclusions drawoptions(withpen pencircle scaled 1mm); u := 1cm; \stopMPinclusions \startreusableMPgraphic{foo} draw origin--(u,u); \stopreusableMPgraphic \starttext \midaligned{\reuseMPgraphic{foo}} \stoptext produces a line with default thickness, not 1mm wide. Is this a bug? Or do I misunderstand the purpose of \startMPinclusions (I have assumed that it inserts the text verbatim inside each figure definition)? All, In working through the beginning chapters of the metafun manual, I am getting a very unusual effect when I open the resulting pdf file in Preview on Mac OS X. question concerning "overprint"

Hello, my name ist Thomas. I recently did some graphics for a math book using metapost and the context-macros. The context-macros turned out to be a great solution for all the cmyk-problems concerning professional printing. But now another problem occured. When I put some elements (for example fonts) on shaded areas, the color of the shaded areas should go on beneath the fonts to prevent artefacts in printing. But it doesn't, the editor told me. This is called "Ueberdruck" in German, which would be "overprint" literally translated but I don't know if this is the correct word. I hope you understand my problem. If so, it would be nice when you could tell me if there are any options in Context to achieve what I want, it's quite urgent. I'm naturally a mathematician and no specialist in computer graphics, so I know very little about pdf. Thanks Thomas Epp

dosetupidentity problem

Hi friends, I've been using eXaMpLe for some years and I find that recently dosetupidentity stopped doing anything. (This is a setup for document headers in PDF). I was wondering if this was a bug, as I used to get Acrobat Document Properties and now I don't, simply from updating ConTeXt. I am using latest gwTeX on Mac OS X. prevent new paragraph when changing font

Hello, is there any way to prevent ending the paragraph when changing the font? I want to keep this in one paragraph: Some text \switchtobodyfont[def]another text in different font. But when after typesetting I get: Some text<new paragraph> another text in different font. Thanks Zdenek

Write once layout everwhere (?)

Hello, I have used ConTeXt in the past and I have been very pleased with it and the results obtained, much more than LaTeX. Now I am looking into a solution that would allow me to layout the content ConTeXt and in other formats that ConTeXt does not (Forgive my ignorance, if I am wrong) output, like HTML, Plain Text, or RTF (Those are the formats that I can think of that are interesting to me currently). Reading the Wiki one of those solutions would be XML, but I know very little about the subject, so this email is to ask about experiences in similar endeavors, other solutions for the same problem and how practical this is. I suppose that I would use this for general writing and for academic as well (Maths and engineering). Thanks, Pepe

Hi Pepe, If you want your content to remain maintainable and manageable for a long period (e.g. decades), if you can afford it, and if you have a sufficiently large amount of content, then I strongly recommend investing the time and effort in an XML-based solution. My experience is in large scale educational/commercial applications, in which managing content in XML and using tools like ConTeXt to create beautiful print output, and alternate tools to create web output from the same source, is a very good solution. I can certainly let you know the technology we use, but some of it is commercial and expensive, and other bits are just complicated! partial hz ?

Hi, hz justification brings better results, sometimes (most paragraphs don't change), but the entire typesetting is generally slow down with hz almost by factor 2. Thus I'd like to have a a kind of "partial hz" that I can use on selected paragraphs only. Hi, my footnotes are nicely defined a such: \def\setnotebodyfont {\let\setnotebodyfont\relax \restoreglobalbodyfont \switchtobodyfont[rm,9pt]\setupinterlinespace[line=9.8pt,height=.79,depth=.21]\parskip2pt}% Now I have to set the entire text with hanging/hz – same for the footnotes. But the related command ... \setupfootnotes[align={block,hanging,hz}] ... is kind of overwritten/ignored by the syntax shown above. No matter where I place it. Could someone please show me how to weave the align-instructions into the given footnote definition? Thank you, Steffen

endlinechar redefinition

Hi Hans, Jaroslav Hajtnar (in czech TeX list) encountered the problem with \input primitive redefinition. He uses a macro package for comma separated value file (CSV) inclusion. It redefines some catcodes and \endlinechar before start reading such file by \input. The problem is that during reading CSV the reading is interrupted by reading another file like \readfilename ->pdfr-ec (c:/TeXLive2005/texmf-context-a/tex/context/base/pdfr-ec.tex ConTeXt macro \input takes care about catcodes but not about \endlinechar so in this situation the file pdfr-ec is read with wrong \endlinechar which causes error. We believe that system solution is the ConTeXt takes care about \endlinechar when automatically starts reading some standard files. Please Hans can you look at it? Actually it is character ^^X (0x18, part of per-cent/per-mil char) which is used as \endlinechar delimiter.

Hi, How can I make \framed ignore the width of the rule? I am trying to typeset internet protocol headers, but I cannot fully get what I want. questions about math formula

Hi all, I have two questions about math formula. 1) I'd like to use \startalign to typeset mathematical formulas since it is more convenient than \eqalign. But the formula number cannot be located between two lines just as \eqalign can. I hope following example can make me clear. \starttext \placeformula \startformula \eqalign{ a + b & = c + d\cr & = e + f\cr} \stopformula \placeformula \startformula \startalign \NC a + b \NC = c + d \NR[+] \NC \NC = e + f \NR \stopalign \stopformula \stoptext The number of equations in second formula can only be put on the first line or second line but not between them. My question is how to make the location of formula number in \startalign the same as it is in \eqalign ? 2) It seems that \left and \right cannot be used on separate groups. Here is a simple example: \starttext \placeformula \startformula \eqalign{ a & = \left(\frac{b+c}{d+e}\cr &\phantom{=~} + \frac{g}{h}\cr} \stopformula \stoptext If I change \left and \right to \big, it compiles successfully. Hi all, I'm using ConTeXt to typeset Chinese, and I am confused with indentation in ConTeXt. 1) I've searched the wiki and found several commands maybe relevant: \indentation, \indenting, \setupindentations, \setupindenting. My first question is what are the differences between "indentation" and "indenting" ? 2) In Chinese, most paragraphs start with an indentation of two characters. How to make the width of the indentation to be exactly two Chinese characters? I can achieve this approximately by using \setupindenting[big,yes] and \setupheads[indentnext=yes]. Thanks. Hello, I use \setupcolors[state=start] \setupinteraction[state=start] and after I place the contents somewhere, the links that refer to the same page where the content is are red but others are green. I want them to be just the same. I found that \setupinteraction[state=start, color=middleblue, contrastcolor=middleblue] solves my problem, but is it the most elegant way to do? I guess there is a preset somewhere describing the range how far the space can be shrinked/stretched. So, in these projects I'd like to have the maximum spacewidth set a bit narrower. Ubuntu pkgs: new edgy backports

I just updated the Ubuntu edgy backports of the texlive packages (for i386) and have been running them on my feisty laptop for half an hour and they pass my usual 'compile textbook in ConTeXt' test. The 'context' package provides version 2007.04.17 12:51. They are recompilations of the latest Ubuntu gutsy (7.10) packages, which are Norbert's latest Debian packages with maybe a couple additions (on the other hand, Ubuntu and Debian look like they are in sync right now). Let me know if you have problems. To use the packages, add these lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list : deb http://web.mit.edu/download/sanjoy/texlive-backports/ edgy/ deb-src http://web.mit.edu/download/sanjoy/texlive-backports/ edgy/ To add my key (to use the security features of apt-get): wget http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/sanjoy/sanjoy.asc sudo apt-key add sanjoy.asc Then apt-get update apt-get install cm-super texlive-fonts-recommended \ context context-nonfree context-doc-nonfree ('cm-super comes from the universe repositories) If you've been using them before, you don't need the install line with explicit pkgs. Using a \hbox wrapper seems to be the easiest way, but none of the definitions using \hbox took care of spacing around the symbols. Hello I have the following problem with footnotes. I want the footnotes at the end of the document, and i have footnotes very long. But the footnotes placed with \placefootnotes not fit it in the page. updated Ubuntu edgy texlive+context backports

I just updated the Ubuntu edgy backports of the texlive packages (for i386) and have been running them on my feisty laptop for half a day. The 'context' package provides version 2007.04.17 12:51. They are recompilations of the latest Ubuntu gutsy (7.10) packages, which are Norbert's latest Debian packages with a couple additions. Let me know if you have problems. To use the packages, add these lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list : deb http://web.mit.edu/download/sanjoy/texlive-backports/ edgy/ deb-src http://web.mit.edu/download/sanjoy/texlive-backports/ edgy/ Then apt-get update apt-get install cm-super texlive-fonts-recommended \ context context-nonfree context-doc-nonfree ('cm-super comes from the universe repositories) Sorry, no dapper (6.06) backports yet! multipars?

All, I see an example of the use of multipars in a background developed in "It's in the Details," but I can't find any explanation of what multipars represents (or multilocs or friends). Can someone steer me to an explanation of what these things represent and how to use them? Thanks. David.
