Some minor issus

Hi everybody, currently I am doing the final layout of my thesis for which I used context. I am now struggeling with two thing, which I think might be minor issus for some of you, but not so for me ;) First, some of my URLs within footnotes are wider as the textwidth. Is there a way to force a line break other than defining break points for each of it? Maybe even with a nice symbol identicating the forced break? Second problem is the formatting of the in text references. it would be nice if there is a way they were not bold. I tried different things with \setupreferencing but the text stayed bold. I could not find something in regards to this topic in the manual or in the wiki. My thrid problem is, how can I force context not to continue footnotes on another page? And a similar thing ... how can I achieve that there are always at least two lines of a paragraph on each page if this paragraph is split between two pages. I tried \clubpenalty and \widowpenalty as well as \def\defaultwidowpenalty and \def\defaultclubpenalty. But I am not really sure what the numbers identicate. I guess not the lines ... factor=fit images don't fit

Hello all, I have to place a number of images into some given-size frames in a layer. The images should be scaled proportionally to fit into the frame. The code I'm working with is: \defineframed[framedimg][ frame=on,framecolor=elux, background=color, backgroundcolor=white, width=\wdfig, height=\htfigone, offset=overlay, ] \setlayer[figs][voffset=\nextfigvoff]{% \framedimg{% \externalfigure[#1][ factor=fit, % maxwidth=\wdfig, % maxheight=\htfigone, % frame=on, ]% }% }% where \wdfig, \htfigone are the frame size and \nextfigvoff is the vertical offset which must be placed. I've tried factor=fit, factor=max, but in both cases I get images which cross the boundaries of the frame, mostly in the horizontal direction. If I add the maxwidth/maxheight specification, images don't get scaled at all. I would expect factor=fit to scale the image in such a way that the biggest direction fits into the enclosing box, while factor=max would scale the image in such a way that the smallest direction fits into the enclosing box. Instead, in both cases the vertical direction is being fitted, with no apparent consideration for the horizontal direction. Hi, all-- I would like to use different styles for left and right headers in a book: I would like to set the left side (which shows the book title) in small caps, and the right side (chapter title) in italics. \setupheader[style=\sc] works fine. So does \setupheader[style=\it] But \setupheader[leftstyle=\sc,rightstyle=\it] Doesn't work. Both headers appear in the (medium-weight roman) body font. Any idea why this is the case? -- Matt Gushee

\startalignment[middle] and \externalfigure

Hello, \startalignment[middle] has no effect with \externalfigure[]. \dontleavehmode seems to be a work-around. Is this normal behaviour or a bug? problem with mp clip

Hi, it seems, that clipping with a MetaPost path is broken (at least on my machine). I couldn't test it on Contextgarden, as the standard example pictures are not installed (or the !!path is not searched). Anyhow, if someone can test this please. I work with the latest minimal distribution (XP), ConTeXt beta from 03.07.2007, pdftex 1.40.4 and mpost 1.0. strange colorleak in definetyping[XML]

I did encounter 'leaking' color outside the XML verbatim typing. The effect can be turned off and on by removing/placing the ':' in 'file:' in the second xml-line. Is this a bug? It certainly is annoying that the default color is inadvertently changed. Hi, Hope this isn't hijacking the thread, but I have a quick question related to this and I'd thought I'd post it here instead of starting a whole new topic about something similar. How do you center headers? I know that if you just use one header, it's automatically centered, but if you use alternating headers, they're left/right aligned by default... right? So far I have a two-page spread set up so that the chapter appears on the right header and the title of the text on the left, but neither are centered. Do I use \midaligned, or am I on the wrong track? A few natural table issues

Hi, I've noticed a few issues with natural tables. 1. Embedding images into tables do not scale correctly using recent ConTeXt releases. They do using the TeXLive 2007 version (2007.01.12). It does not matter whether I use factor=max or fit. I find I need to use the \vbox{\noindent{...}} structure to make the picture obey table's align= setups. test1.tex and weight.eps/pdf demonstrate this behavior. I attached pdf's to show the "good" behavior. 2. Background colors & frames -- bottomframe on a cell is obscured by a background color on the cell below. Similarly, a rightframe is obscured by a backgroundcolor to the cell to the right. test2.tex demonstrates this behavior. 3. Using \chardef\characteralignmentmode=2 widens columns and doesn't quite center the data. It appears as if the decimal is centered, but this does not necessarily center the text. The top row shows tables without setting the alignment mode, the second row of tables show what happens when it is set equal to 2. It would be nice if the left- hand tables looked the same, and the bottom right were centered better. test3.tex demonstrates this. 4. I was wondering if anyone had any pointers on improving performance and reducing memory usage with natural tables. Are there particular options or settings to avoid, and so on? I'm using Perl scripts to generate the ConTeXt code, so tend to output many setupTABLE commands. I have some tables which can take a minute or two to render for one page, and might have a document with 15 pages, so it takes some time. I saw some recent postings regarding linetables; I did not use them initially given they did not seem actively used and natural tables provide all the features I need; but I would be willing to give them a try if I understood what limitations they might have relative to natural tables. Combining two pages on one, in landscape mode

Dear list members, the following command: texexec --pdfcombine \ --combination=2*1 \ --paperformat=landscape \ --nobanner \ --result=twoinone.pdf \ file1.pdf file2.pdf used to work to get file1.pdf and file2.pdf in twoinone.pdf with two pages at one, and in landscape mode. However, since installing ConTeXt 20070403 (the minimal version), this no longer works for me. I get the output "texexec: No match." I also get the same error with the ConTeXt coming with texlive on ubuntu feisty. Any ideas of how to solve this? Thanks in advance /Micke P

Several environments in a project?

Hi, I have a project with a few products sharing the same layout, which is specified in a global environment file. Each product is in a separate subdirectory together with its components. Then, I want to put some setups and figure definitions in product-specific environments and I do it like this: \startproduct OneProduct \project MyProject \environment OneProductDir/LocalEnvironment ... The problem is that the local environment is not read when I typeset a particular component, but only when I typeset the whole product. How can I fix that? Nicola

presentation module

Hi all, I have played around a bit and prepared a module to produce presentations with ConTeXt. It is inspired (of course) by Hans's work, but provides less frills and an easier interface; I hope it is especially suited for academic presentations. Before I actually unleash it on the unsuspecting masses, I would be grateful if somebody could test it. It comes with a demo file and some documentation, so all you have to do is run it through ConTeXt; I want to make sure that it'll work on other installations than mine. TOC fine-tuning (urgent)

Hi, at a large project's end (480pages, 10pages TOC) I need to fine-tune content and MyContent (with \writebetweenlist ...). As processing these 1.5 million characters each time takes about 10 minutes, fine-tuning seems to be impossible. What is needed is a way to place the TUO file instead the re- calculated \complete content. Once, Hans kindly send this patch, but I can't make real use of it: \unprotect \def\dodoplacecombinedlist[#1][#2]% {\dobeginoflist \dosetuplist[#1][#2]% \doutilities{listentries,#1}\jobname{#1}\relax\par \doendoflist} \protect just change \jobname to {somename.tuo} I guess when my TUO normally is called test.tuo I should copy it to a testtest.tuo and next, instead of \completecontent I use \placecombinedlist [content][file=testtest] . This works, but takes long too, as again all chapters are processed. So I comment all the \component lines in my project structure in order just to integrate my placecombinedlist[content][file=testtest]. But these pages are empty now. Anyone can help me there? Minimal ConTeXt in 64 bits machine

Hi, Is it possible to install the minimal context distribution in a 64 bits machine? I downloaded 'justtext' and 'linuxtex' zip files, and I see that the environment setup script sets TEXFOS variable to a 64 bits specific directory when it detects a 64 bits machine. However, that directory does not exist in those zip files. Can I get it somewhere else? I'm using Ubuntu 7.04. Thanks, Maurício

\overleftrightarrow

I'm preparing a geometry course using ConTeXt and am impressed with the system so far. One thing I need is to do is typeset various geometrical symbols. It looks like ConTeXt already has the \overleftarrow and \overrightarrow commands, but one thing I'd like to have is \overleftrightarrow, for typesetting the symbol customarily used to denote the line determined by two points. It seems, though, that this isn't available in ConTeXt, or, at least, it is not available by default. I tried looking on the contextgarden and google, but didn't come across anything. Weird Problem

Hi all, I'm a complete newbie to ConTeXt (aka recent convert from a GUI world and WYSIWYG typesetting), so please forgive my ignorance. :) I'm having some problems typesetting a simple practice document that used to compile fine before. Recently, after modifying part of the text (not the code, which to the best of my knowledge appears correct, since I haven't encountered any errors), I can no longer see the title page, page numbers or headers, and paragraphs don't indent as they used to, when they did before. Again, I didn't change any of the code, at least AFAIK. Is this a bug, or just user error? Do I need to update ConTeXt? If so, how? (if you could, please provide step-by-step directions, as I'm a beginner to the command-line interface as well, I'm afraid). I'm running the Jan 2007 version of ConTeXt bundled with the MacTeX 2007 distribution on Mac OS 10.4.10. I've also provided the sample document for reference, in case that helps. error in textbackground with metapost

There must be something badly amiss in the textbackground processing. Below a small example demonstrating the problem. When a block falls badly on a page boundary an error occurs as shown. One may have to tweak the \blank[] in order to get the error depending on local font settings etc. In my case 0.78 shoved the second block to page 2 without an error but from 0.79 onwards the error occurs. At 0.66 the block is split after the third line, but at 0.68 again the error shows. TeX complains as follows. ! TOC, listalternative d, ragged right, interaction

Hi, I'm trying to alter the formatting of the table of contents for a document of chapters and sections. After searching the ConTeXt manuals, source and the list archive, I've only four more things I'd like to change. This is where I ask for your help. My current setup (for the table of contents): | \setupinteraction [state=start] | \setuplistalternative [a] [command=\hskip.8em] | \setupcombinedlist [content] [alternative=a, interaction=all, | level=section, partnumber=no] | \setuplist [chapter] [after=\blank, before=\blank, | numberstyle=\tfd, pagestyle=italic, style=\tfa, | width=1.75em] | \setuplist [section] [alternative=d, headnumber=no, | interaction=pagenumber, margin=1.75em, | pagestyle=italic] This produces a table of contents like that: | 1 Chapter One 1 | Section A 1 Section B 2 Section C 3 Sec- | tion D 5 Section E 12 Here are my questions: (2 to 4 are of lower priority for me) 1. How can I setup the toc to get the sections (or listalternative d) to be set ragged right? 2. Is it possible to insert text between the section-pagenumber and the following section-text? (Section A 1 -- Section B 2 -- Section C 3) ^^ ^^ 3. I can't alter the distance between section-text and pagenumber. Changing the command option for listalternative a does it for chapters. But this doesn't work for listalternative d. 4. Can I get interaction=all for listalternative d?. Only interaction=pagenumber produces interaction. If I set interaction to all or text, I don't get interaction for the sections. I'm using ConTeXt 2007.04.17 with pdfTeXk 3.141592-1.40.3 from TeXlive 2007 on Gentoo/Linux. Customizing chapter titles

Hi, All-- I am attempting to typeset a book in ConTeXt, but I am having some problems with chapter titles: 1) The font I am using for titles is completely different from the body font. I am trying to experiment with a couple of different variants, though. The following works fine: \setuphead [chapter] [ .... style={\switchtobodyfont[CopperplateGothicCondensed, 15pt]}, .... ] However, I may want to set the chapter titles in bold. So I've tried: style={\switchtobodyfont[CopperplateGothicCondensed-Bold, 15pt]}, but this doesn't work: the titles default to the body text font (a Garamond clone). It's not that the bold font is unavailable, because if I use the first version and add: numberstyle=\bf it has the expected/desired result: the chapter number appears in Copperplate Gothic Condensed Bold. I have also looked through the pertinent typescript and map files, and there are no misspellings; the required font files (tfm, vf, and pfb) are all present. Furthermore, I've checked the log file, and the right typescript and map files are always loaded; also, there is nothing in missfont.log. But somehow, when I specify the Bold font, it just doesn't get loaded. 2) In order to get the titles just right, I may need to use customized commands (used via the [text|number]command parameters of \setuphead). But when I attempt to use such commands, TeX usually fails with the error: ! Argument of [my command name] has an extra }. This is not true as far as I can see--at least all the curly braces match in the source file. Here is one example of a command that causes the error: \def\ChapterNumber#1 { \switchtobodyfont [CopperplateGothicCondensed-Bold, 15pt] #1 } I've tried various commands; this one works: \def\SmallSpace#1{\setupinterlinespace[line=1.6ex]#1} but everything else I have tried fails. Is it something to do with white space in the definition? I am using the 2007-01-23 release of ConTeXt on 2 different machines. Both run Linux, but on one I have teTeX 3.0, while on the other one I am using the minimal TeX provided by Pragma ADE. Linetables ROW alignment

Hello all again, I'm using linetables, because despite their lack of documentation they've been rather easy to set up to achieve the effects I needed (colors, alignment, etc). I have a small problem with the title row though, because I would like its entries to be all typeset centered (whereas the rest of columns has them partly left and partly right aligned) but apparently there is no (easy) way to override alignment in a single row. In particular, \setuplinetable[r][1][align=middle] doesn't work, even though all other specifications (color, background, style) work as expected. I think that if a row alignment is required, it should be applied and take precedente over column alignment. Any suggestions? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta P.S. Looking at core-ltb.tex I've found that \BH and \EH are mapped to \linetableBR and \linetableER. Is this intentional, or a cut-n-paste error? Different parameters for a continuing itemization

I use \startitemize[continue] quite a lot to create itemised lists which continue on from the last number of the previous list. I've only just noticed that the 'continue' keyword seems to mean that parameters in the second [...=...] list of a \startitemize are ignored. Example (tested on live @ contextgarden): \setupcolors[state=start] \starttext Hello world! \startitemize[n][color=blue,stopper={jkl}] \item Hello world! \item Hello world! \stopitemize Hello world! \startitemize[n,inmargin,continue][color=red,stopper={mnb}] \item Hello world! \item Hello world! \stopitemize \stoptext Note that the inmargin keyword in the second \startitemize does seem to work, but the parameters in the second set of [...=...] are ignored. I would really like to be able to continue numbering but be able to override formatting in the continuing list. I *thought* I had been able to do this before, but maybe not. If continue needs to keep this behaviour, is there any chance of a new continuenumberingonly keyword, or similar? :-) (The real world example involves moving from numbering in columns to numbering in the margin, but I need to adjust the width parameter for the continuing list, and it won't let me.) Symmetrical layer positioning?

hello: I have a problem with endnotes. I use \placefootnotes at the end of each chapter. When the last page of a chapter is almost empty, the footnotes are placed at the same page, but when the las page of a chapter is almost full, the notes jumps to a new page. Also, I have a \stopcolumns before the notes. How can I force the notes to keep in the same page? Hello All, I wanted to share my recent experience in co-ordinated document development. In our office we have to make annual reports, each part of which is contributed by a member. Previously everybody wrote 'Word' documents which was compiled into a larger report. Recently we had the idea to use a Wiki to ease the pain out of this process and to make it enjoyable for everyone involved. After looking around various wiki software we decided to install a brand-new one called Informl (http://informl.folklogic.net) . One nice feature about this is that in the edit mode twin windows are used, one for input and the other a realtime preview window. Anyway this approach could work with any Wiki software. One motivation behind using a Wiki as front-end was to involve people who new nothing about Tex or Context. Secondly it allowed any person to participate in the process from anywhere. Next we used the ruby library hpricot to retrieve the web document and filter it into a context document. This step was interesting and I would like to sharing the code with anybody interested. extra spacing between verse and chorus

Layers in ConTeXt

Hello all, I have a couple of questions concerning the use of layers in ConTeXt. I'm working with Luigi Scarso on a layout which is characterized by some fixed-position elements surrounding the actual main body of text. For the fixed-position elements, I'm using layers. However, my ConTeXt is a little rusty[*], so there are a couple of things which I need hints for. The first one is very simple: is there a way to 'fix' the layer's content "until they change"? I've currently set them as page backgrounds, but their content gets reset on each new page. The second question is slightly more complex: is there a way to add contents to a layer, rather than replacing the current layer content? Something like a macro \addtolayer[layername][hoffset=whatever(optional)]{additional content} Thanks in advance, -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta P.S. The result is bizarre both in xpdf and in evince (there is no acroread for powerpc, shame on adobe!). But this seems to be merely an error in the viewer; I have often found the linux pdf viewers to be extremely inferior to what I get in OS X; one of the reasons why I will not be able to switch to linux anytime soom. PNG output

I want to convert my standalone formulas to PNG to display these formulas on my website. What I am doing is the following \starttext \startTEXpage \startformula e^{i x} = \cos x + i \sin x \stopformula \stopTEXpage \stoptext and process this via texexec --pdf to get a PDF file. I tried to convert the resulting PDF file via gswin32c to png but the resulting PNG output is not so good. Then I read dvipng could do the job, which means I have to produce dvi output via texexec --dvi but than I get complaints from dvips that it cannot find the file tex.pro for the specials. However a png file is produced. Help appreciated TIA Wim

frames in ConTeXt and metafun

This is a very small cosmetic problem, but it bugs me: I'm preparing a background for a presentation, and I want a frame with a transparent color to appear on every slide, so I define an overlay and use metapost. I also want to frame some text elements, so I use a \framed. The problem is that in the \framed, the lines of the frame overlap at the edges, so with a transparent color, the corners are slightly darker. The minimal example below shows the problem. Any solution? Is it possible to have the frame around \framed drawn by metapost? Thanks! Enumerations and numbered labels

Hi folks, I've recently started to consider ConTeXt as an alternative to my long-time friend LaTeX. I like ConTeXt very much but noticed a few things that are either less than ideal or maybe I simply haven't figured out yet how to do them right. Here are the first two: 1) Enumerations I've read in a few places that this is what is to be used whenever I would use theorem-style environments in latex. There are two things I seem to be unable to do: Creating Theorems that look like this. --------------------- THEOREM 1 It would be nice if Context could produce a theorem where the title is not separated from the text and the next line has no hanging indent. --------------------- I was able to produce only ---------------------- THEOREM 1 It would be nice ... ---------------------- or ---------------------- THEOREM 1 It would be nice ... ---------------------- using location=top or location=hanging. What I want is no hanging indent at all. (I also tried location=serried, which produced an overly large gap between THEOREM 1 and the theorem text. The second thing I am used to in latex is the option to place things in parentheses by providing an optional argument to the environment. E.g., in assignments I typeset, I often have either \begin{question} ... \end{question} which simply produces -------------------- Question 1 ... -------------------- or \begin{question}[20 marks] ... \end{question} which produces -------------------- Question 1 (20 marks) ... -------------------- This second option is easy to simulate if I can produce something that has no hanging indents. As it is, I can't. 2) Numbered labels I tried to use numbered labels plus a little bit of tex-code to simulate the above environment. The gist is that I used \definelabel[question][location=intext,text=Question] to define the label and, wherever I needed a new question, \question [ref]. The result of writing \question[ref], however, was "Question Question 1". The label always seemed to be duplicated for some reason. Is this a known bug? Thanks for your help with this. Here is a directory which should work out of the box; test file is bib-test.tex. I think I found the key to the problem: For \title, the entry of the previous \title is repeated. For \chapter it behaves correctly. I define my articles in terms of \title, and each article is within a \start-stopproduct file. So basically the bib-module needs to support \title as well (used to do so).
