Chapter number conversion to words

I would like to display chapter headings spelling out the numbers into words. For example: Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three etc. I thought that I could put a conversion in the setuphead function; however, it doesn't appear to be supported. So how to I do the conversion? Thanks, Bart

\noindent in startstop block is not working on the text that follows the block

I defined a startstop block. However, the text that follows the block I don't want to be indented. <Code> \definestartstop[Center][ before={\startalignment[center]}, after={\stopalignment\noindent} ] \starttext \startCenter This is some text! \stopCenter I don't want this paragraph indent; however, it ends up being indented. \stopText <\Code> However, the text that follows the block is indented. How to I declare a \noindent within the startstop block definition that will work when the block is exited? Thanks, Bart

PDF/A with ConTeXt

Records management systems prefer to receive their PDFs compliant with the PDF/A standard (subset of PDF 1.4). Is there any mechanism in ConTeXt/pdfTex to specify the PDF output should comply with PDF/A? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDF/A Thanks, Mike

%18 or 18% : incorrect placement of the percentage sign ?

Hi, I have often seen (in arabic newpapers) the percentage sign set left to the number "% 18". Recently I read an article (http://sehstoerung.sonance.net/pdfs/ TitusNemeth_dissertation.pdf) that calls this "... the incorrect placement of the percentage sign". Any native arabic speaker out there? Is it %18 or 18% ?? Thanks, Steffen

Hello, I don't quite understand why, but my distribution became broken at some random time point (I do not remember doing anything special in the meantime). Unicode greek in Context

Hello, I am evaluating context for using it to write long greek documents. So far I have not succeeded in typesetting unicode greek in live-context. I have tried scanning the documentation and mailing list archive with no success. I must admit I am not a very technical user. This is what I have tried so far (unseccessfuly): \enableregime[utf-8] \mainlanguage[gr] \starttext Hello world! Καλημέρα κόσμε! \stoptext Is there something wrong with that? Dear ConTeXt felows, Wiki has been sleeping for a long time. Specifically, some topics change considerably over time, but wiki pages do not, and so newbie users are completely confused. I would like to announce "The First Week of Wiki: Improving the Installation Instructions" http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Category:Installation Take this page for example: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TeTeX_3.0_installation It should more-or-less disapear (it may be left for historical reasons in quarantine, but other than that, it should not confuse people!!!) So, I have a little request: can we devote one week (or 10 days if neded) for improvement of installation instructions? This means: - improve a generic page (Installation) with links, general notes about dependencies (ruby, perl), general settings (\useMPTEXgraphicstrue, \preloadtypescripts, write18, texexec --make --all, ctxtools --updatecontext, ..), release notes - three (or slightly more) main pages: Windows Installation, Mac Installation, Linux Installation - Linux Installation may have links to Debian Installation or to Installation from source or similar, but we certainly do not need dozens of different pages for the same thing (Debian TeXlive install, Debian installation, TeX-live) - an template for obsolete stuff (what to do with Aleph? - it's not supported any more anyway) Etc. The topic to follow should probably be about fonts or hello world documents. But we should start somewhere. hash size calculating

Hi, i got to the problem that context file compile with PDFtex was not created because hash size is to big. OK, I increase hash size but my question is little different. The problem was on big table whisch was 11 pages long. Now my question is: is has size calculating over complete document or over element. So it I create 11 smaller tables there wont be such problem? Sumary of current versions of Context

I am becoming bewildered by the multiple versions of Context now being discussed. For some years now I have used Context for complex layouts with tables and so on. The texlive version works OK for me. But now I see. mkii mkiv XeTeX Luatex etc. etc. So what is the target audience for each of these branches? And what branch is best for me to keep track of for creating non-fiction books in English? And what is it called when I need to find and download it? I suspect mkii is the branch intended for lowly folk like me but confirmation would be comforting. Hi, When I use \bookmark[chapter]{Some bookmark} the bookmark appears twice in the list of bookmarks but the bookmark also appears twice in the Table of Contents. Luatex is advancing very nicely and I wonder is there any reason to use XeTeX over luatex, i.e. what features are missing (if any) in regards to regarding font-handling in luatex in comparison with XeTeX? spacing problem with mvs sybols

Hi! I'm using muse for writing some astrological notes while studying and noticed there is problem with spacing after using symbols from 'mvs'. Here is the test file: \usesymbols[mvs] \setupsymbolset [astronomic] \setupsymbolset [zodiac] \starttext This is Mesha \symbol[Aries] and this \symbol[Cancer] is Kataka. Let's see \symbol[Sun] too. \stoptext Am I doing something wrong here? I tried with both mkii and mkiv, but the result is the same. Sincerely, Gour

Indenting (again!): a real problem in indentnext=yes

Hi, Sorry but I'm going to talk about indenting again. This time, it seems to me that there is really something wrong with the indentnext=yes option. Look at the following example, it speaks for itself (or at least I hope so). \setupindenting[yes,medium] \setupformulae[indentnext=yes] \starttext This is my first formula: \startformula x = 1, \stopformula and this line should not be indented because it's still in the same sentence. There is no line skip in the source file, and no new paragraph created. This is my second formula: \startformula x = 2. \stopformula This line has to be indented (and it is!), as this is truely a new paragraph. \stoptext The option indentnext=yes does not handle properly the first situation. Hi everyone, This topic has already been discussed on the list, but I didn't clearly understand the conclusion, so I'm asking again... It is not clear to me why the following \everymath{\displaystyle} \starttext \startformula \frac{1}{A'} \stopformula $\frac{1}{A'}$ \stoptext fails with ConTeXt (on the ' inside $.$), while \documentclass{minimal} \everymath{\displaystyle} \begin{document} \[ \frac{1}{A'} \] $\frac{1}{A'}$ \end{document} is ok with LaTeX. The use of \everymath is to blame here, but why? Thanks in advance! Morgan

The point about theorems

Hi, I need to typeset theorems with ConTeXt, and I would like to get your advice before I begin. I read an interesting post about it on the dev list: Enhancements to core-des for theorems http://archive.contextgarden.net/message/20070601.055815.50e07e4d.en.html But I was unable to understand the very conclusion of it... Hi, Sorry to bother you with this question again, but I didn't get any definitive answer in the previous discussion: wouldn't it be useful to have a new option in \setupindenting that indents EVERY paragraph? I mean even after floats, formulae, heads, etc. It would be easier than to set every 'indentnext' option to 'yes'. My first thought was that it should be the role of the 'always' option. Is it silly? Ahoi! For a songbook I need a alphabetically sorted TOC. As easy workaround I tried to use an register/index. But I'd like to get my headers into the index without typing \index all the time. Descriptions and headerwidth, distance and align

Hi all, I tried to use descriptions in a module from me and get a few unwanted and wrong results from the settings. In my first example I try to set the headerwidth to 3cm and the distance between the header and the text to 1cm. The result I get from this example is a 2cm wide header and 2cm between the header and the text. I know the real width for the header is the difference between width and distance and 2cm are correct but this is a stupid method, changing this will break many documents but a alternative solution would be to introduce a label headerwidth. The wrong distance between the header and the text is also a result from this method, the description macros reduce the headerwidth by the distance value and introduce a extra value between the headerbox and the text, this give me twice the distance width and is a bug for me. Another missing thing is a key headeralign, a workaround for moment is to misuse the text key but this should be implemented. \definedescription [test] [width=3cm, text=\hfill, % better headalign=flushright distance=1cm] \starttext \showframe \test{One} Text for the first description. \test{Two} Text for the second description. \stoptext My second example deals with the same problem as above (headerwidth is reduced by distance width) but it gives a completely broken output. Numbers in Tables

The code below defines a number and then on each row, displays then increments the number. The number is defined and reset to 0 before the table is declared. However, when the number is displayed in the table, it's not zero as expected, but some other number (usually between 3 and 9). The reset at reset point #1 does reset the number to 0, but it doesn't stay that way when the table is declared. The only thing I have found to work, is to define a row and column and put the reset there (see reset point #2). I would like to declare and reset the number outside of the table definition, but it doesn't seem to work. MKIV Chinese typesetting

Dear Hans and other friends: I play a little bit on MKIV's Chinese support and find it is incomplete. It has some serious problems, and lack important features as well. Well, I know it from mk.pdf that Chinese support is under construction, so in this email I just want to give some Chinese horizontal typesetting suggestions for development (vertical typesetting are more frequently used in Hongkong, Taiwan and Japan, so maybe people from there are eager to help): first, a features many Chinese people like: a lot of Chinese users write essays using full-width punct (that is, a punct mark is as the same size as the Chinese characters) and I found that the puncts are compressed well in context with good penalty settings(although there are minor problems in the pdf). however, sometimes it is up to the publisher which kind of punct marks are to be used, and usually many scientific books and papers use half-width puncts. so I think a new feature should be added to map all the Chinese puncts into english while at the same time, a space should be added after the English punct marks. that is, changing 中文，中文 into 中文, 中文 notice the space in the second example there is an opentype feature called hwid, but it should not be used because: - it changes the English alphabets as well - most of the time the function in most Chinese fonts is missing or buggy - it does not automatically add the space These are the minor problems in the mk.pdf: - pp118, penultimate example, box 2, line1, the ' punct mark should not appear at the end of the line - pp118, ultimate example, box 2, line2, in fact, if you want do perfect Chinese typesetting, all the puncts which begin a line or end a line should be closed to the margin line which makes the type block look good (especially when watch the right or left edge of the type block closely) while this ' has many space before it. In English, it is quite easy and the good old tex does a good job because all the letters and puncts are designed carefully, but in Chinese things are much difficult because all the glyphs including the puncts in all the Chinese fonts have the same width, and which makes the problem worse is that different Chinese fonts have different positions for these puncts. So a dynamic way which calculates the most left edge and most right edge of a punct glyph should be used, and it is not available in luatex:( will it be added later? second, and the most important, on the bilingual typesetting: nowadays English words are frequently used in Chinese, so great care must be taken to handle it. many Chinese users write their manuscript in one of the two ways: 中文 English 中文 or 中文English中文 The first way looks good when using a editor with mono space font and the second way is convenient for one to type. So both users will happy if both ways get the same result in context. in MKII, users are forced to use such kind of expression which drives them crazy and should be avoided: 中文English\ 中文 A small skip should be left between Chinese and English which makes the result much better. usually the space is a quarter of a chinese character width. A TeX expression should like: \hspace{0.25em plus 0.125em minus 0.08em} but I think it is better to introduce a \setupxxxwidth for the user. The last important thing for English and Chinese bi-lingual typesetting is that: do not use English glyphs in Chinese fonts because: - recently English glyphs in most of the Chinese fonts are ugly - users have no right to modify the Chinese fonts - many other reasons so when set up a Chinese typeface, it is better to leave a feature for the user to choose the accompany english typeface. while typesetting, Chinese typography rules do not interfere with the english one, that is, chinese part and english part use their own line break model. here are two bugs in recent context: - 中文 English English English 中文will produce 中文EnglishEnglishEnglish中文, the spaces between english words are all missing. - the following script produce an error: Invalid field id penalty for node type glyph (1). Hi, I see the Jan 26 version of context so I just want to upgrade my system. As what I did before, go to http://minimals.contextgarden.net/ and download the file, unzip it and run. after rsync, it cannot generate the mkiv format (other formats are fine) I run Debian on x86 intel machine. Hi all, Having installed the minimal distro from http://minimals.contextgarden.net/ on my linux box (in my home directory) I added some own modules in /home/jean/lua/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/extra an tried various texhash and mktexlsr: mktexlsr lua/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/ texhash lua/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/ But these are still not found and I had to specify the complete path of the modules! shading in metapost

Hi all, I have a somewhat silly question about metapost/metafun. To emphasize parts of a picture, I place a bright red arrow or circle/ellipse on top of the picture. I would like to make this arrow more visible by putting a shade beneath it (I attach a jpg that will hopefully show the desired effect). Right now, I simply draw the arrow twice with a transparent black color, once with a smaller pencircle, so the effect is like a shadow that is darker in the center than at the edges. However, I think the effect would be more dramatic if I could have a transparent area with a smooth grading. Is this possible at all in metapost? filling a path with a transparent AND shaded color? Bug: Messy results when using "table" in head and multi-page "tables" in text

Dear ConTeXt experts, I have setup a page layout where I use "table" in the page-head for formatting quite a bit of stuff. (The example below is just a simple as can be basic idea, to show the overall effect) Now - as I can't prevent later users of this layout environment - to not use \starttables ... \stoptables I naturally would like for this to work in the text region as well. This works fine and as advertised (well mostly, see below) as long as the table does not spill over to the next page. In which case, things start to look very messy, indeed. From my (simple) point of view it looks like ConTeXt gets confused about which format to use for which table and tries to do them all at the same place or something. Any chance to get this fixed ? Thanks in advance Carsten P.S.: There is an additional bug (also concerning the single page version and not related to having a "table" in the pagehead), which puts in an extra (empty) gap in between the end of the tablebody and the tablefoot when the tablefoot starts with \HL (and there is no \HL at the end of tablebody). Things work when putting the \HL at the end of the tablebody, but then no \HL will be put on top of the foot for any intermediate pages of the table, which is certainly not what one would usually want in this case. I just do it outside the document in a Makefile because I'm used to doing that sort of thing. I imagine the only uncompromised way to extract an svn revision (or revision range) that covers the whole document accurately is to write a script that extracts the source file names from the previous logfile (or somewhere), individually determines their revision using "svn status" (to get modified status), and constructs an overall result. I guess some embedded Lua could do that pretty easily and portably. Hi Markus, If your sources are in svn, then they actually have the same svn- number, after a commit. But the numbers in the $Revision$ or $Id$ tags of your working copies are not updated by svn commit. However, if you do an "svn update" after the commit, it should update the numbers. So, you shouldn't need to work out the maximum value. Here, we actually use the output of the "svnversion" command, save it automatically it in a file, and include it in the document. This way, the version number indicates if the document came from checked-in sources, modified sources, or mixed revisions. Hi, I was trying to make a report for my job last year. I did some javascript things to put a clock at each page of my presentation to make sure I'll finish it in time. porting database module to MK IV

Hello Hans (and Taco), In case you run out of challenges, there is one thing that might be handy to have in MK IV: the database module for typesetting tables (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/M-database, there is no hurry though.) The benchmark is here: http://dl.contextgarden.net/myway/csv.tex but the first thing that fails is already \usetypescript [palatino][\defaultencoding] \setupbodyfont [palatino,10pt] inside s-mag-01.tex. Hi, The superscript in expressions like $R^N$ seems to be typeset with a bigger font size in ConTeXt than in LaTeX. Is it the wanted behaviour? From the typographic point of view, which is the best of the two renderings? Thanks for your advice, Morgan
