new version luatex / mkiv

Hi, There is a new version of luatex and mkiv. You need to update them together. The best place to get them is the contextgarden (which will probably have the new versions pretty soon). This release of is rather substantial: no longer is metaposts called, but mplib is used instead. This bring down metapost runtime and conversion to nearly zero. The user interface is the same, but the implementation is different. Tomorrow (or so) taco will make releasenotes. mpost updating

Hallo, I have updated an older ConTeXt (ver: 2007.07.29 22:06 MKII) with a aktuell mpost. I have used 'http://minimals.contextgarden.net/current/bin/metapost/mswin/bin/' as source. The command 'texmfstart texexec --autopdf --make --all' produces no metapost formats at all. Calling 'mpost.exe' I get a messagebox with the error: 'procedure entry point "kpse_record_input" in DLL "kpathsea356.dll" not found' (my translation from german). What is wrong here? Wolfgang

The MetaPost team is happy to announce a new release of MetaPost: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MetaPost 1.003 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The sources and a win32 package can be downloaded immediately from http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/metapost/ The source package should compile normally on all systems that are capable of compiling a modern web2c-based TeX distribution. The win32 package is intended for texlive or a similar web2c-based installation, and has been tested only with TeXLive 2007. These executables will *not* work for miktex, sorry. Of course, we welcome any comments (either good or bad) that you may have. Leopard and ConTeXt

Hi MacUsers out there, until yesterday I worked with 10.4 and a recent context: no problem (only mkII). Today I finally set up a new machine with 10.5. and MacTeX, run ctxtools --updatecontext. Running a context-file now gives me the right context-version but ends up with: "TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [save size=5000]" Well, I remember this was something about texmf.cnf (or context.cnf?). So I changed the value to 10000, remade the format but still the echo mentions 5000. Some known problem with Leopard and ConTeXt? Maybe PATH stuff? =o( Please help!!! Steffen

Short question regarding PDF bookmarks

Hi everybody, Default setting when creating pdf bookmarks (e.g. for \section, \subsection, etc.) seems that the bookmark points to the page (it zooms out to fit the whole page), rather than only going to the referenced object: E.g. try to click on a bookmark on this pdf (365 KB): http://www.mdpi.org/marinedrugs/papers/md6010001.pdf An example where the bookmark points to the object, and will not affect the current magnification/zoom: http://www.biomedcentral.com/content/pdf/1741-7015-4-14.pdf Can this be realized in ConTeX? page numbering question

Hi, I have been searching contextgarden.net and the manuals at the Pragma website for more than an hour now, and I have yet to find a way to have ConTeXt decide in two-sided mode that the last page of a book chapter is a even numbered page without anything on it and therefore will also not have a page number. I probably can manually effect this by carefully inserting \setuppagenumber commands which start and stop the state, but that's not a very general solution. Dear list members, My biochemistry textbook has been published by orell füssli as an UTB book. I would like to thank all the members of this list, and Hans in particular, for their help (acknowledgements in the "Thank you" section of the book as well). You'll find a few sample pages under: www.ogbasel.ch/context.html (2.5MB) Page and margin sizes prescribed by the publisher. The pages illustrate: p. 7: The use of inmargin text. p. 79: a "vignette", in the margin and partially in the text area. p. 110: The height of some margin figures was large, necessitating manual adjustments. p. 145: A framed box and a wide table. The large number of enumerations, figures, frames etc. made some typographical sins inevitable (e.g. last line on this page). p. 155: textbody and margin completely filled p. 190: I include this page for Willi and Thomas p. 235: Some chapters end with what students really need to know (red background). Scite startup script error

Hi, It seems I have missing scite-ctx.lua. It is not present in the cont-tmf.zip which I had downloaded. I created an empty scite-ctx.lua to suppress the error message. Is this file meant to be created manually or a part of distribution (cont-tmf.zip)? a sort of marking

Hi to all, I have a manual. It's A5 to be printed in A4 (so to cut in the middle the A4 page). I'd like to have a cue like a marking to be able to cut exactly in the middle. \setuplayout[marking=on] does not print anything useful for the case. I've thought about \showframe[text=off, margin=off] but it creates a green border all around. Ideas? first steps with XeTeX

Since I need to typeset some names with characters outside of ec encoding, I'm just checking out XeTeX. - first threshold: If you have \setupoutput[pdftex] in cont-sys.tex, it doesn't work. ;-) (Complains "you should use pdftex binaries".) - second threshold: Adapt your typescripts. Since I use TeX Gyre anyway, that was no problem. (Is there still no complete type-gyr.tex in the distribution? I couldn't find it.) - third threshold (standing there): XeTeX can't read tagged PDFs. For I typeset proceedings, I must include a lot of pages from presentation PDFs. And even if I'd call myself a PDF professional, I didn't find a way to delete all tags from a PDF. I could convert everything to EPS or even render the pages in Photoshop. But I'd prefer to stay with the PDFs. Any ideas? Tomorrow I'll try to use an additional PostScript font - is that even possible? Otherwise I must convert it to OpenType. Greetlings from Lake Constance! Sitting in a Paris restaurant, equipped with WI/FI and after a couple of wine glasses. I really like your work. It would be interesting to see the sources and to learn the tricks (your used). The look is great. Thanks to Hans for the beautiful gift to the World. One final comment. I think the typesetting is fine, technically speaking, but, overall, the spacing is too tight. It is not relaxing. Readers should be more confortable. WHAT IS THE THINKING OF THIS COMMUNITY. I am not a typesetter, but setting type, good typesetting is difficult to express. It transcends words. It's about feelings and type. Personally, I think that Prof.Dr.med. should be typeset differently. How can we accept Prof, Dr. Med, with not spaces in between, perhaps thin spaces. If I comment out lines 5-7, I don't get the fatal error but also I don't think I see protrusion and font expansion happening. The real book doesn't have very much body text but is does have 215 images with code like \placefigure{none}{\externalfigure[#1.jpg][width=\textwidth]} where #1 comes from a macro call. Any thoughts? (I suppose I can split my source file in half and find a ConTeXt command to start the page numbering for the second half a 107 or so and then combine the two PDFs with Acrobat.) Two questions came up when I was looking into putting ConTeXt on a USB stick (i.e., as a "portable app"): 1. Is perl still required for a ConTeXt installation (say, under Windows)? I know texexec is now written in Ruby, but are there other programs in Stand-alone or the Minimals that require perl? 2. I vaguely recall some mention of eventually replacing texexec with a Lua version. Is this actually being planned, and would that eliminate the external language dependencies of ConTeXt? --Joel

Hi all, I have set HOMETEXMF in my setupex file, and the path is normally recognized: 13:25 jean@boldair /home/jean % echo $HOMETEXMF /home/jean/texmf Luatex sees it: 13:25 jean@boldair /home/jean % luatools --expand-path HOMETEXMF /home/jean/texmf (not if I write $HOMETEXMF ??) But luatex does not find files there: 13:35 jean@boldair /home/jean % luatools --find-file t-tikz.tex <blank> I have tried to set TEXMFHOME but got the same result. Hi, It seems I have missing scite-ctx.lua. It is not present in the cont-tmf.zip which I had downloaded. I created an empty scite-ctx.lua to suppress the error message. Is this file meant to be created manually or a part of distribution (cont-tmf.zip)? While typesetting some proceedings, I stumpled upon the following issues: (1) \setupheads seems to do nothing - I must set every option for every head separately. AFAIR this is broken "forever", at least it was the same in 2000. (2) \setuphead[chapter][header=none] should switch off the header only on that page where the chapter starts, shouldn't it? (It disables headers completely.) Or how else would I achieve that? (3) \startitemize[n] Numbered itemizations suddenly(?) start with 0 - as this may be suitable for programmers, but it's, ehm, a bit unusual in every other context. Hm, it works in the garden. (4) Is it possible to include footnotes in tables in the normal footnote numbering and placement? (At the moment I use localfootnotes to enable footnotes in tables at all, but that's unsatisfying.) Hi everyone, I noticed what seems to be a lack of coherence when typesetting references with interaction enabled. Look at the example below: \setupinteraction[state=start] \starttext See \in{figure}[fig:a]. {\it See \in{figure}[fig:a].} \placefigure [][fig:a] {A caption.} {HELLO} \stoptext When interaction is enabled, the two references are typeset bold and upshape. When it's not, the first one is upshape, the other is italic. This can lead to overfull hbox when turning on interaction, and this is quite unintuitive. Is there a reason why it is so in ConTeXt? First document — problems with bib module and layout

Hullo, I'm just making my first real document in ConTeXt and although I'm thinking more and more how this was a great idea. I also decided to simultaneously write an external document/module containing all definitions to fit the But as a newbie, of course, I stumbled upon some beginner's problems: 1. Chapter heading is not like I would expect — I would like to have the line above the chapter as long as the one below it 2. The empty page at the end of the document annoys me and doesn't want to go away. 3. The citations won't show any content, neither does the list of publications — I'm clearly doing something very wrong here. What I want is numbered citation with short references at the bottom and full references in the list of publications in the appendices. 4. If I want to include 'pf_ul.tex' and 'moja_bibliografija.bbl' into my user's local modules in Linux, where should I place the link to them? It's a bit annoying to have to place links to them in each directory where I make a new new file that uses them. And clearly, there will be many yet to come! If anything I just wrote doesn't make much sense, I excuse myself ...I'm tired, tried to learn and hack together this definitions the whole day today and didn't sleep much yesterday either. mpost update in minimal windows

Hallo, I tried to update my metapost executable in the Windows ConTeXt minimal. In the bin dir I found both mpost.exe (Version 1.000-rc1) and a mpost.dll In the archive 'metapost-1.002-windows.zip' there is mpost.exe (Version 1.002 (Web2C 7.5.5)) and no dll So I downloaded 'mplib-alpha-0.20-win32.zip' but there is an other exe newpost.exe (Version 1.002 (Cweb version 0.20)) and no dll So I wonder where I can find the matching dll and which exe above is the right one. There is an other strange thing: In the aktuell 'cont-win.zip' is a 'texmfstart.exe' dated 2007-08-07 with about 700 KB. But the 'texmfstart.exe' in my bin dir, which is installed 7 or 8 months ago ist dated 2007-08-08 and much bigger (~900KB). The next thing I wanted to do ist to update LuaTeX. Ohjeohje?! Overlay caption placement

Hi all, I have a few pdf figures that I'm including in a large report that are essentially full page (portrait) diagrams. However, they each have blank space in the lower right corner and I was thinking that it would be nice to put the caption in this spot. Is there a way to overlay a caption on top of a floating figure? Ideally, I'd like to be able to provide an x,y offset location for these captions in cm. Various ConTeXt Questions

Hi there, I am taking a look at conTeXt as a means of typesetting documents with more advanced page layouts which otherwise would be produced with desktop publishing suites. I am very new to conTeXt, so I know very little about it. The only documentation I have been able to find on the internet is: ConTeXt Garden ConTeXt an excursion ConTeXt : The manual I have been sifting through these for a while, and whilst the documentation is good, I still have questions. I must apologise if I missed the answers in the docs or if the questions are just plain dumb. 1) Is there a way to make ConTeXt stricter? It seem that ConTeXt will not complain if you misspell the names of colours, layers, overlays etc. I would rather it did. 2) Is there a way to overlay many layers/overlays at one place. It seems using background= can only take 1 layer/overlay. Even better if I could offset the layer/overlay from an origin. 3) I have had difficulty pushing the whole layout including the margin to the right about 2cm. I have tried using setuplayout to alter leftedge, leftedgedistance and backspace. Is that not the way to do it? 3a) Similarly I would like to make the textheight longer so that the footer is about 1cm from the bottom of the page. I have had no luck in setting textheight using setuplayout. 4) Is there a module to parse CVS tags, like the RCS package for laTeX? 5) Can I use OpenType and TrueType fonts in ConTeXt? Ideally via fontspec. 6) Is there a book on ConTeXt for beginners aside from what I have already listed above? 7) Can I specify RGB colours in th 0 <= x <= 255 format? So far I have had to write a script to help me convert them. 8) Is anyone proficient with ConTeXt going to the Cork TeX User Group meeting? Hi, I'm trying to convert the counter to Chinese character one on one, like 0->a, 1->b, etc., so 10 will be "ba" (I use a, b, c, . . . to denote the Chinese glyphs which makes more sense for you).
