Hi, Doing my first steps with ConTeXt (after about ten years experience with LaTeX) I was running into the following problem. Running the enclosed example I got still the english version (as can be seen in the 'Contents'-title of the TOC). % language=de tex=pdfetex output=pdftex \language[de] \starttext \completecontent Test äöü \stoptext I'm using ConTeXt version 2003.9.25 (fmt 2004.8.31) - rather old, I know, but I don't believe that this might be the source of my problem since the manual is older ... Dear all, I try to use Open Type fonts with ConTeXt and XeTeX (I recently did the same with LaTeX using fontspec and mathspec packages). From the web site, I managed to use them for standard text as well as roman alphabet in math. Unfortunately, greek letters stay printed with the Latin Modern font. >From examples of the web site, I tried the following lines but without success. Lucida again

Hello I know that I disturb a lot this list, please forgive me. I tried to install a new mac. I donwloaded mactex (2008) I installed lucida fons in ~/Library/texmf/ then I typed "sudo mktexlsr" and "sudo updmap-sys --enable Map lucida.map" in terminal All is fine with plain TeX, I can use my lucida fonts. I copied all my afm and pfb files in a directory then I typed "texfont --fontroot=/Users/Ericd/library/texmf --ve=bh -- co=lucida --ma --in --expert" from this directory in terminal. (don't understand the --ma --in -- expert things) It made a lot of job, map files, tfm files. The texnansi-bh-lucida test file seems to work (it's a long task, I only asked to shox LucidaBright). BUT \usetypescript[lucida][texnansi] \setupbodyfont[lucida,10pt] doesn' show me Lucida in my pdf. What did I do wrong ?

Hi all, I've just downloaded and installed the long-expected TeXlive 2008:). My question is: is it's ConTeXt up-to-date? What about ConTeXt upgrades? (TeXlive 2008 can upgrade it's packages automatically; does anyone know how long will it take for new ConTeXt versions to propagate to TeXlive?) It would be much more convenient not to have two distinct TeX installations: one for LaTeX and one for ConTeXt... Verbatim with color background

Hi, I have a short question about verbatim areas (\starttyping): I have been trying to define a background color to verbatim areas in a document. My method so far is to define a textbackground named "verbatim" and refer to this in the setuptyping method: \setuptyping[typing][margin=0.5cm,bodyfont=8.0pt, before={\starttextbackground[verbatim]}, after={\stoptextbackground}] This works only partly. For example, when using long verbatim texts that spans over more than one page, the background color disappears on the last page. Is there any other easy way of controlling the background color on verbatim areas? Best regards, Tommy Jensen

I think this message mysteriously disappeared yesterday (at least I didn;t see it); if you've seen it before, please excuse the double post! Hi all, I was just wondering if this is a bug or if it's something that still needs to be implemented: the example on p. 10 of Mojca's sometxt MyWay works in mkii, yet in mkiv, it doesn't: \starttext \startTeXtexts \dorecurse{12}{\TeXtext{\recurselevel}{\recurselevel}} \stopTeXtexts \startMPcode numeric r; r = 1.5cm; draw fullcircle scaled 2r; for i=1 upto 12: draw (origin--down) scaled 4pt shifted (0,r) rotated -30i; label(sometxt(i), up scaled .75r rotated -30i); endfor; \stopMPcode \stoptext in mkiv, I get no labels and the somewhat cryptic sentence "[do we need TeXtexts in MkIV]" on my pdf. minimal update problem

Hi, I am using context minimal on a linux box. After I created a directory named "texmf-local" under $TEXMFROOT and run command: ctxtools --updatecontext All downloaded files went to texmf-local and no update to the folder texmf-context. I do not like this way of updating, because I keep personal data/file in texmf-local. Can anybody tell me how to avoid such problem? -- Zhaopeng XING Tinbergen Institute

It appears that the problem is my definition \def\ {|~|} Though this definition works in a simple test file, it apparently conflicts with something in my environment file and produces the error message reported previously. So, is there a “safer” way to define \<space> as {|~|}? Alan

Hi all, I'm trying to define a macro \Command which can either have four or five arguments. If it has five, I want to define them as \Command1[#1][#2][#3][#4]{#5} if it has four, as \Command2[#1][#2][#3]{4#} I thought this would be the way to go: \def\Command{% \doquadrupleempty\doCommand} \def\doCommand{% \iffifthargument% \doquadrupleargument\Command1% \else% \dotripleargument\Command2% \fi} but that gives me errors about "too many }s". So I'm wondering: am I on the wrong track? Can this be done at all? Thanks, and best Thomas

Installing ConTeXt Minimals on a Mac

What follows are some queries that I will be happy to write up for the wiki. The aim (hope?) is to develop a set of instructions for installing the minimals on a Mac that a Mac user without any real knowledge of unix (such as myself) can follow easily. (There are a number of people scattered around the world who help me in producing various publications; and since they too are not unix savvy, I need such instructions if we are to keep our installations functioning and up to date.) Once the ConTeXt minimals are installed in the Applications folder and the user can run \starttext Hello world! \stoptext which is where the wiki (Installation>section 1.2) currently leaves off, there still remain a few tasks. Specifically, (a) getting this ConTeXt installation to recognize a personal texmf directory (b) running the various binaries (e.g., texmfstart, ctxtools) in / Applications/ConTeXtMinimals from Terminal (c) establishing synchronization between PDF output and its ConTeXt source. Currently, it does not seem to work (with TeXShop at least) Note, in the latest TeXShop there is Added support for SyncTeX. SyncTeX is new synchronization technology by Jerome Laurens which is included in TeX Live 2008 (but not earlier TeX distributions). The technology is built directly into pdfTeX and XeTeX. In modern TeX distributions, most typesetting actually calls pdfetex (even if using latex to output a dvi file), and thus the technology is available for such typesetting. Nobody has written a package for that yet, but if you are patient, it's easy enough that people will be ready to help you. All you need is some basic metapost (or tables) or TikZ + a suitable font. And exact specification how you would like the package to work (the form of input, what options you need, ...). If you are ready to wait and if you are ready to provide enough feedback regularly, it's quite doable. When I think about it, it might make sense to ask on TikZ mailing list as well. Maybe it's easy enough to make a general TikZ module that would then work equally well on all engines and all flavours of TeX (but I don't know TikZ well enough). Mojca

Formula number in right2left direction

Hi, There is a problem in formula numbers in RL direction. I mean in a formula the direction of the number of formula is from left to right. I tried \mathdir TRT and this problem disappeared but two new problems appeared. First, the hole formula typesetted from right to left which shouldn't be. Second, the prantesis arround the formula number get reversed like )a.b(. It would be nice if \mathdir TRT only changes the direction of the formula number (with correct prantesis) not hole the formula. Thanks

dot space (english article in german publication)

Hi, an english article set with \mainlanguage[en] gets this additional space after the dot closing a sentence. That's probably right for english, only if all other articles in that publication are german it looks like a mistake. How to keep the english language but turn this english typesetting off? \framed[backgroundcolor=x] might imply \framed[background=color]

What would be the drawback of allowing backgroundcolor=n imply background=color and backgroundscreen=x imply background=screen in the setup to \framed. Background compatibility should not be an issue and I am failing to imagine cases where it would not be desirable. images as background

Hi all, for a presentation, I would like to have a series of images as backgrounds for my slides, and I want to use them in a randomized order. The images are named "1.jpg" through "20.jpg." So I was thinking of using this code: \externalfigure[\directlua0{print(math.random(20))}][width=\paperwidth] epecting that this should But that doesn't work, ConTeXt doesn't find my pictures (I get "name: dummy" texts). Any idea what is going wrong? Thomas

bug with numeral conversion function

It seems that there is a bug in converters.alphabetic function, converters.alphabetic(0,"arabic") returns the western 0 (no matter what is the selected language) while converters.alphabetic(1,"arabic") gives the Arabic 0 not 1 and so one i.e. it looks like as if it starts counting from zero. "Float within a frame" challenge

Hi, I am trying to accomplish the following layout with ConTeXt: - An icon and a descriptive text should be contained together in a separate frame - The frame should be centered and have a special background color - Within the frame, the icon should be placed to the upper left. - A descriptive text should "flow" around the icon within the frame, first part to the right and then below the icon. I have tried the following construct: %---------------------- \startframedtext \placefigure[left]{none}{\externalfigure[danger]} The textual description of the icon comes here. It should ideally flow to the right of the figure within the frame, but the figure actually becomes behind the text. \stopframedtext %---------------------- The problem here is that the icon and text is placed on top of each other. When removing the frame (\startframedtext command), the placement of the figure and the text works OK, but I don't get a frame then of course. I have studied the "It's in the details" document which explains a great deal about float's, but I haven't found anything covering the frame issue. Is the "startframedtext" the wrong command to use? I have the minimals installed in ~/Applications/context/ Context works great. However, I'm having trouble with bibtex. [1] I export the following variables before using context. . ~/Applications/context/tex/setuptex ~/Applications/context/tex export TEXMFHOME='$HOME/Library/texmf' export TEXMF='{$TEXMFHOME,!!$TEXMFPROJECT,!!$TEXMFFONTS,!! $TEXMFLOCAL,!!$TEXMFCONTEXT,!!$TEXMFEXTRA,!!$TEXMFMAIN}'; (I added export PATH=/Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-intel/ bin:$PATH but that didn't seem to make a difference in a couple of quick trials) [2] The problem is that the minimal's bibtex can't find the bib file that I have stored in ~/Library/texmf/bibtex/bib/ It reports: "I couldn't open database file bib-name.bib" and "I found no database files---while reading file file-name.aux" [3] "which bibtex" yields the path to the bibtex installed with the minimals: /path-to-my-user-account/Applications/context/tex/texmf-osx-intel/bin/ bibtex [4] When I open a new shell session, "which bibtex" points to /usr/ texbin/bibtex. In this new shell, bibtex finds the bib file. It's a small thing, but if there's some other setting to make bibtex work in the same shell session that context does, that would be nice. Thanks! Color in math in MkIV

Hi, The color commands do not work inside math mode in MKIV. For example $f(\color[blue]{A}) = b$ $f({\blue A}) = b$ come out black and $f(\blue{A}) = b$ colors everything blue. I have an easy work around for the moment: \unprotected\def\mathcolor[#1]#2% {\preparebinrel{#2} \currentbinrel{\text{\color[#1]$\m@th #2$}}} and then use \mathcolor. Aditya

Missing background color with \definetextbackground

Hi, I am strugglig to get the background color visible with the following code: %---------------------------------------------------- \setupcolors[state=start] \definetextbackground[highlight][backgroundcolor=yellow, frame=on, location=text, color=blue] \starttext \starttextbackground[highlight] This text should have yellow background but it is white. The text is however blue. \stoptextbackground \stoptext %------------------------------------------------- The background of the rendered text is always white, independent of the backgroundcolor parameter. The font color is however OK (blue). All other samples I have tried from "details.pdf" behaves similarly - no background color and no frame/frame color. Hi, I just noticed that in my MkII footnote definition ... \def\setnotebodyfont {\let\setnotebodyfont\relax \restoreglobalbodyfont\switchtobodyfont[rm,9pt] \setupinterlinespace[stretch=0.05,line=9.8pt,height=.79,depth=. 21]\setupalign[block,hanging,hz]\parskip2pt} ... all works fine, only "stretch=..." does never ever have any effect. I've generated all the formats as I can typeset using Wolfgang's typescript (attached as type-vista.tex) using fonts located in /usr/share/fonts/vista-fonts, that is, the path and the font names don't contain spaces. Hi, Main manual pg 78, § 4.17: \setup*texts *[.1.]* [.2.] [.3.] commands "When the first argument is left out it is taken for granted that the footer and header should be place under or over the pagebody (text)." What does this mean ? Thanks, Alan

Feature request: \newitemize or something like this

Hi there! I have a feature request (or a question "how to do it";)) concerning itemizations. Currently, they are much like LaTeX (say, with the enumitem package). I think this is not the best idea. I can hardly imagine using more than two levels of itemize in my documents; on the other hand, I like to introduce different "kinds" of itemize on the _first_ level. Imagine I'm typesetting a paper on mathematics (which I'm doing all the time;)). I want another kind of itemize for lists of: * equivalent conditions (as in: "the following are equivalent: ..."); * statements connected by an "or" clause (as in: "at least one of these holds: ..."; * statements connected by an "and" clause (as in: "assume that these conditions are satisfied: ..."). What I usually do (in LaTeX) is to define a few environments, like "equivenumerate", "orenumerate", "andenumerate" etc., and make them use (a), (b), ..., (i), (ii), ..., or (1), (2), ... respectively. This way I have a clear visual clue in my papers on what's going where, and on the other hand, I separate content and presentation. Would it be possible in ConTeXt? If yes, how to do this?
