typesetting ruin

A year ago I had my presentation sheets typeset with ConTeXt. Now, USING MY SAME SOURCES, with ConTeXt ConTeXt ver: 2008.05.21 15:21 MKII fmt: 2008.7.5 the severely clipped picture below results. I did the setup with \usemodule[pre-general] % followed by: \setuppapersize [S6][S6] \setuplayout [backspace=1cm, topspace=1cm, margin=0pt, header=0pt, footer=0pt, bottomdistance=.875cm, bottom=1cm, width=fit, height=fit] \starttext \TitlePage{\vfill\vfill\bf Contents of page} \stoptext \endinput What the .... could have happened here to cause this apparent clipping? It does not seem to be in the MPgraphic's used for background etc, because commenting these out does not change the odd dimensions. Any idea? Hans van der Meer

Installing Minimals Fails

I am having trouble installing the context minimals. I am using Linux (Xandros 4.5, Debian Etch). During execution of first-setup.sh, I receive the following year: --------- loading : Context Page Macros / Layout Specification ) ! I can't find file `page-log.tex'. <to be read again> \relax l.371 \loadcorefile{page-log.tex} (Press Enter to retry, or Control-D to exit) Please type another input file name: --------- I do hope someone can help. The minimals seem to be my only path to a working Context that is not too old. None of the texlive-2007 packages will install. -Erich Fickel

Strange spacing before \reference

Hello, I played with the cross references today… \starttext Here is a text \reference[foo]{bar} with reference in it. My \quote{goto} syntax point to him. It works great but there's a big gap between « text » and « with », just where y put the « reference » tag. \stoptext Am I using this the wrong way or is this a bug ? Regarding the ConTeXt support package for Npp, any idea where to copy the Application Data\Notepad++ directory to ? You can copy the Program Files\Notapad++ directory to wine's Program Files and copy the contents of the ConTeXt directory to the ConTeXt tree. However, under wine there's no Application data directory. Also, I'd like to copy my Windows Npp++ - Settings -> Preferences - Settings -> Styler Configurator settings - View -> User Define Dialog settings to Wine's Npp++ installation. Hello, It seem's that there's some changes on the « frenchpunctuation front » ! Thank's. I modified my test file and ad more precise rules to the wiki : http://wiki.contextgarden.net/frenchpunctuation I test it with luatex 0.29 and context 2008.09.21 * Strange bug : the space After the openning quote («) is twice bigger than the one before the closing one (»). Look at test 3 * Wolfgang change the wiki about the compose word, but using this (with the syntax compose||word) I get an endash (–) and not the normal sign (-). Test 5 * There should't be space between two sign. Test 2 * The space before the footnote sign is too big (it's clearer with othe fonts). Test 4 As usual, if you need more information, just ask ! In fact, I have just checked that this options are not necessary. I forgot to say that I was using XeTeX. It seems that, even with these options, accented letters are not printed properly in the properties of the document. ... while dealing with colored elements: having the footnote number (down in front of the footnote text) in dark green is not that bad, just, why can't it be colored in an other way? I tried in vain both in \setupfootnotes and \setupfootnotedefinition: numbercolor, color... Only \setupfootnotes[textcolor=magenta] affects the footnote number in the main text. But nothing changes in the footnote area. Does this make sense? Steffen

Units module - bug?

Hi, I see that the units module puts a nonstretchable/nonshrinkable space between the number and the unit. Is that ok? Perhaps the space should be thin (this is what Knuth recommends in The TeXbook, and I guess it looks nicer)? Updating LuaTeX after MacTeX-TeXLive 2008 (again)

Dear ConTeXters, I apologize for sending twice this message: since I did not receive it myself, I thought it has been lost… So here is my help request: I just updated my TeX installation with the latest MacTeX-TeXLive 2008, and since the version of LuaTeX included there was 0.25.0, I built a binary version LuaTeX, Version snapshot-0.29.0-2008091817. Now the problem is that my usual procedure for generating mkiv doesn't work and I couldn't fix the problem… (That procedure used to work fine with the previous version of MacTeX-TeXLive 2008). More precisely mtxrun --selfupdate seems to work fine, but then luatools --selfupdate results in: LuaTools | to be replaced old script /usr/texbin/luatools LuaTools | unable to locate new script LuaTools | LuaTools | runtime: 0.082 seconds and the command luatools --generate apparently works fine, since there is no complaints, as far as I can see. Now when I issue the command: luatools --ini --verbose --compile cont-en luatools stops after executing some commands and finally I get: LuaTools | using lua initialization file cont-en.luc LuaTools | running command: luatex --ini --lua="cont-en.luc" "/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex" \\dump (/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex ! Hi Mojca, Thank you for your help. My problem is not over though, and a new problem has turned up. The first steps you described, In NTG-context Digest Vol 51, issue 81, message 8, worked, that is, with sudo. However, the last four commands, "texexec --make --all", "texexec --make --xtx --all", "luatools --generate" and "context --make", returned the usual error messages (with and without sudo and and issued from any directory along the path "/usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/universal-darwin"): RBs-Powerbook:/ robert$ sudo texexec --make --all sudo: texexec: command not found RBs-Powerbook:/ robert$ sudo texexec --make --xtx --all sudo: texexec: command not found RBs-Powerbook:/ robert$ sudo luatools --generate LuaTools | error unable to identify cnf file LuaTools | error unable to identify cnf file LuaTools | no cnf files found (TEXMFCNF may not be set/known) LuaTools | LuaTools | runtime: 0.009 seconds RBs-Powerbook:/ robert$ sudo context --make sudo: context: command not found In addition another problem has turned up: I cannot use Context anymore, with TeXlive-2008 and TeXshop. When typesetting a file I get the following message: "/Users/robert/Library/TeXShop/Engines/context.engine: line 3: /usr/texbin/texmfstart: Permission denied" Line 3 of context.engine reads: texmfstart texexec --pdf --passon="-synctex=1" "$1" I already changed permissions of file texmfstart.rb to: Owner robert, Read & Write. Hey, sorry to ask about something which was discussed here and on the wiki - but I guess I need a clarification. The wiki says how to prepare Mk IV from TL 2008 to work. My questions are: * from an end-user point of view, is it *really* necessary to have MkIV upgraded always to the latest version? (I don't plan to use XML, I'm just a beginning user of ConTeXt; what I would like to use are tex-gyre fonts...) * if yes, how do I upgrade TL2008's MkIV? Hello Mojca, I seem to have run into the same or similar problems as Otared Kavian. I followed the instructions on the ConTeXt wiki, but the command ''luatools --generate'' gives the error message: 'LuaTools | error unable to identify cnf file LuaTools | error unable to identify cnf file LuaTools | no cnf files found (TEXMFCNF may not be set/known) LuaTools | LuaTools | runtime: 0.008 seconds', regardless of the directory from which I issue the command, and though there is a 28 KB file texmf.cnf sitting in /usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/web2c. As you succeeded in updating ConTeXt, luatex binary and ConTeXt scripts manually, could you please share the method with us. I for one am not sufficiently trained in unix to go there all by myself. (I'm working on a G4 PowerBook under OSX-10.4.11) Thank you in advance. Robert Blackstone

typescript and font features bug?

Hi all, I am using the latest minimal and try to compile the following two files with luatex. The second file, using typescript and font features together, get a serious problem with the final pdf: punctuation centered unexpectedly in lines. For the first files, with no font features specified, it is OK. I do not know whether someone else can replicate this problem. But it happended on my laptop. units module has bug with markIV?

Hi all, "\Micro" in the "units" module failed, while "\Nano" and "\Milli" works fine. "$\mu$" works, so it doesn't look like a font problem. The following code works with pdftex/MarkII, but fails under Luatex 0.29beta/MarkIV. \usemodule[units] \starttext Hello world! $1\Micro\Meter$ $1\Micro\Second$ \stoptext Any hints? Context on Miktex

Any conflicts or difficulties? Second question: Can I get mptopdf to work in the Miktex tree without installing Context? Mojca's workaround: May 31. 2008 00:37 If you still want to run ConTeXt on MikTeX while it has been removed, you may create a file texmfstart.bat in C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7 \miktex\bin with the content: @echo off ruby "C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7\scripts\context\ruby\texmfstart.rb" "%*" and extract www.pragma-ade.com/context/current/cont-tmf.zip into C: \Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7. Then, update filename database and generate formats, and everything should work again. Typesetters for Hire wiki page

Hello everyone, I want to make something real using ConTeXt, e.g., typeset a book, but I have no orders yet. Tonight I was surfing Internet and found an open source framework for Web, Django. (It is the name of famous gipsy jazz guitarist, btw). The interesting point is that the site has the list of developers seeking enployment. Please look at **http://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/DevelopersForHire I feel we can create similar wiki section, Typesetters for Hire, and promote it in some way. Don't we? Reading modules from zip files

Hi, I tried to load a module from the zip archive without placing it in my tex folder, this work fine but I'm unable to include files from my global tex tree because none of them is found by luatex. The following works \usezipfile[t-letter.zip] \usemodule[letter] \starttext \startletter letter text \stopletter \stoptext but this fails \usezipfile[t-letter.zip] \usemodule[letter] \starttext \startletter[opening=hi,closing=bye] \input knuth \stopletter \stoptext The file knuth.tex and all the map files are not found. Interaction and accented letters

Dear all, is there a way to put accented letters in the interaction command ? problem finding files (cygwin-related?)

Hi all, I try to help a colleague who has successfully installed ConTeXt using the Windows installer and has started typesetting some documents. His installation has problems finding files. Using something like "\input ./path/to/file.tex" works OK, but this doesn't: \externalfigure[./path/to/file.pdf] He gets a "figure ./path/to/file.pdf can not be found"-error, while the same code works OK with my local Windows in a VMware virtual machine. He happens to have cygwin installed (I don't have it) and I was wondering whether that is the course of his problems? How does cygwin interfere with finding the /path/to/the picture file? Can I solve this by escaping the path in some special way? Or would moving the picture to the current directory help? Thanks for any suggestions, Jelle

Arabic numbers (in MkIV) should be left to right

Arabic numbers (characters with bidi property "an") should be left to right, just as European numbers ((characters with bidi property "en"). Currently Arabic numbers are made right to left: \setupdirections[bidi=global] \starttext 12345\par ١٢٣٤٥ \stoptext Both line should have the same digits order. I presume that \hyphenatedfilename is for use with filenames that already have hyphens in them? Mine don't, but I want them to split. Perhaps splitting filenames is frowned upon - if so, what is the best way to put them into documents? Or perhaps I should use shorter filenames, but why should I compromise readability? One example is "Transfer functions for PID and KF controllers.xmcd" Any ideas or comments? Richard

Hyphenating hyperlinks

Why aren't the the urls broken across the lines on page2-3. I'm pretty sure the hyperref package in latex supported this, Am I missing an option somewhere? I am using \filename to type-set filenames. Some of these are very long (greater than 30 characters) and overhang the right hand margin, sometimes even disappearing off the edge of the page. The first line break is just before the full stop. There are usually plenty of spaces in the names. Can I get ConTeXt to put a line-break into filenames? Thanks, Richard

The problem of updating context manually using cont-tmf.zip

Hello everyone. I'm using TeXLive2008, and I have just updated my ConTeXt for Chinese supporting using the file downloaded from http://mirror.contextgarden.net/context/current/cont-tmf.zip. I just unzipped it into texmf-local and execute the command: texmfstart texexec --make --all I think everything is OK, but the problem comes. The version of ConTeXt is still 2008.05.21 15:21: context --version MtxRun | main context file: /usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/context.tex MtxRun | current version : 2008.05.21 15:21 I don't know the exactly meaning of "main context file". I think it should be the file I just unzipped into /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local. The version of ConTeXt should be 2008.08.05. Anyone can help me updating the ConTeXt? -- Hello world! Keeping section head with index

I want to put an index in its own section using \section{Index} \placeindex I cannot use \completeindex because that starts a new chapter, not section. Unfortunately, the header often gets separated from the index, being left as the last line on the page. I searched the mail archive and found a suggestion to use: \setuphead[section][before={\testpage[4]}] but this affects the vertical spacing of all section heads. Can anyone either: 1) suggest an alternative way of keeping the section head with the index, or 2) show me how to maintain the vertical spacing of headers when using the above construct. Luatex fails to load a font

Hi! I added a font called TypoOrnaments.ttf to my context-tree. Calling "mtxrun --script fonts --list" gives the result typoornaments TypoOrnaments TypoOrnaments.ttf typoornamentsmedium TypoOrnaments TypoOrnaments.ttf Now I want to use it in my document with \definefontsynonym [typoOrn] [file:TypoOrnaments.ttf] [features=default] \definefont [typoO] [typoOrn sa *] -> {\typoO test} But luatex complains that it cannot find the font. define font | forced type ttf of TypoOrnaments not found define font | font with name TypoOrnaments is not found define font | unknown font TypoOrnaments, loading aborted Same thing with "name:...". My code works when I change the definition for example to texgyrebonum-regular.otf. Any ideas why the other font isn't working? Thanks in advance, Eyke

Hi! I wanted to use colors in my tikz-graphics. Breaking/Hyphenating

1. What must I do to the 3rd paragraph on the first page to get it to space properly? overprint and currentcolorname in mkiv

Hi, is overprinting working in mkiv? \ctxlua{overprints.enabled=true} has no effect here or on ConTeXt live. Maybe I'm missing something. Currently I try to adapt some mkii code to mkiv. Overprinting should only be enabled if - a given maximum font size is not exceeded and - the current text color is black. So I also need \currentcolorname (or something similar) for that test.
