Miktex won't allow cont-en.tex change

Mojca, I tried running Miktex2.7->Settings->Formats, selecting cont-en.pdftex, then tried changing input filename from cont-en.ini to cont-en.tex, but I was "not allowed to change built-in" something or other. I tried adding a new format, calling it cont-en, compiler pdftex, and input filename cont-en.tex, but when I tried to build, it erred with: No pages of output. ("C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7\tex\context\patterns\lang-fi.pat") language : hyphenations fi for fi loaded (n=41,e=ec,m=ec) ("C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7\tex\context\patterns\lang-fi.hyp") language : patterns hu for hu loaded (n=42,e=ec,m=ec) ("C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7\tex\context\patterns\lang-hu.pat" ! TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [pattern memory=300000]. l.1243 ^^c3^^a1h1ors No pages of output. Transcript written on cont-en.log. makefmt: pdftex failed on cont-en.tex. initexmf.EXE: The operation failed for some reason. Not sure what to try next. D.

Hi, Hans: When I used AdobeSongStd-Light as my main font and used LMRoman10-Regular as the fallback font, I found that the spaces between Chinese characters and English words are perfect, for example: \definefontfeature [zh][mode=node,script=hang,lang=zhs] \definefontsynonym [zhserif][name:AdobeSongStd-Light][features=zh] \definefontfallback [westernserif] [name:LMRoman10-Regular][0x0000-0x0400][force=yes] \definefontsynonym [song][zhserif][fallbacks=westernserif] \definefont[myfont][song at 12pt] \starttext \myfont 中文 English 之间的间隔\par 中文~English~之间的间隔\par 中文\;English\;之间的间隔 \stoptext But, when I used SimSun instead of AdobeSongStd-Light, the spaces between Chinese characters and English words became larger and ugly. In previous example, spaces in the first two lines of text are larger than those in the third one, even the spaces between English words also become larger. I remerbered what you said, the fallback fonts can be independent of the main font. However, I think the spaces between the words are releated to the main font. Would you give me a method for solving this problem? The pdf files used as comparison are attached to in the mail and you can do a comparative analysis. Thanks. by Li Yanrui

Minimals and latest luatex on linux-64

Hi, The minimals still have LuaTeX, Version snapshot-0.29.0-2008072108. With the latest minimals, I get the following error ! LuaTeX error ...tyam/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/font-def.lua:684: attempt to call field 'definefont' (a nil value) stack traceback: ...tyam/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/font-def.lua:684: in function 'command' which I think is due to the old version of luatex. Best approach for project with three-part headings and table of contents references?

I am trying to figure out how best to use ConTeXt for a project. Essentially I want to format postings on a message board for printing in a book, and provide multiple "tables of contents" for the postings (more information further down, and questions at the bottom). I'm sure that everything I want to do can be done with ConTeXt, but I'm a ConTeXt beginner, and it looks as if there's a lot of complexity to do this. Each post has a title, an author, a date, and the text of the post. I'd like to arrange the information roughly like this: Title of the post Author author - Date date -------------------------------------- Text of the post... text text text text text text. Then I'd like to create a "table of contents" that lists posting titles by date, like this: January 1, 2008 Title title title ........................ 10 Another title .......................... 11 January 2, 2008 Yet another title ..................... 12 Putting the author in there also might be nice, like this: January 1, 2008 Title title title (John Doe).......... 10 Another title (Jane Doe)........... 11 January 2, 2008 Yet another title (John Doe)..... 12 I'd also like to have a "table of contents" that lists posting titles by author, like this Jane Doe A title ..................................... 14 Another title .............................45 John Doe Title title title ............................ 35 Another title .............................40 My questions: 1) How complex is this (for a beginner) to do in ConTeXt? I am very comfortable with Perl, so I thought I could write a Perl script to parse the posts and generate such tables of contents, with lots of \reference, \at, and \about commands. If this needs significant complexity to solve, I would prefer to handle the complexity with Perl, and keep the ConTeXt simple, so I can understand it. 2) Can I (ab)use the existing heading commands (\title, \subject, \setuphead, etc) to arrange and reference the title, author, and date? If so, can anyone provide a hint of how to do the headings and referencing? Will the existing heading commands let me reference the title, author, and date values for use in my "table of contents"? It looks as if I would have to create my own command that formatted the heading information how I wanted it, and set up the three references. I looked at "Alternative mechanisms" in the cont-eni.pdf, but that didn't seem to describe this type of flexibility. 3) If I can use the existing heading commands (question 2), can I also use the existing index and/or table of contents commands (\setuplist, \placecontent, etc)? And like question 2, can anyone provide a hint of how to do it? It looked to me as if a lot of custom ConTeXt code would be necessary, and that I would have to build my own table of contents entry by entry. Thank you very much, Adrian

Mojca, I saw your note on blog.miktex.org: If you still want to run ConTeXt on MikTeX while it has been removed, you may create a file texmfstart.bat in C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7 \miktex\bin with the content: @echo off ruby "C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7\scripts\context\ruby\texmfstart.rb" "%*" and extract www.pragma-ade.com/context/current/cont-tmf.zip into C: \Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7. Then, update filename database and generate formats, and everything should work again. Mojca I followed this advice, installed texmfstart.bat, unzipped cont- tmf.zip properly, updated the filename database, then got stuck. At the dos prompt: $ texmfstart --help Worked just fine. However, $ texmfstart texexec --help Did not work. What am I missing? If I recall I'll need to do: $ texmfstart texexec --make --all Or some such thing. I was working on a document in which I wanted use a symbol that, acording to the Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List, goes by the name of \Asterisk or \bigast (see p. 22). I saw, though, that this seems to be missing in ConTeXt. Might it be tucked away in some module, or is it just absent? If it's really not there, what would it take to add it? Hello, It seem's that there's some changes on the « frenchpunctuation front » ! Thank's. I modified my test file and ad more precise rules to the wiki : http://wiki.contextgarden.net/frenchpunctuation I test it with luatex 0.29 and context 2008.09.21 * Strange bug : the space After the openning quote («) is twice bigger than the one before the closing one (»). Look at test 3 * Wolfgang change the wiki about the compose word, but using this (with the syntax compose||word) I get an endash (–) and not the normal sign (-). Test 5 * There should't be space between two sign. Test 2 * The space before the footnote sign is too big (it's clearer with othe fonts). Test 4 As usual, if you need more information, just ask ! ConTeXt to XML or HTML

Hello all, I have been looking for a way to convert from ConTeXt to HTML. I asked for God Google and also I have visited http://wiki.contextgarden.net, and read many times almost all articles. Maybe, I have not undestood the process very well. I could not figure out how to make such conversion yet. I saw many different forms of converting XML to ConTeXt, but I did not see nothing from typing in ConTeXt syntax and get a XML output file. The only program I have noticed that do that is tex4ht. This programs bases its conversion in both .tex and .dvi files. The result is not so exact as the desired. Is there another way to do that? Regards, Betoes

Hi again, I try to get a picture on a page using \externalfigure[name.pdf][width=\textwidth] The image is pushed to the next page, even though there is no text on the current page and the height of the image itself is smaller then \textheight, so it should fit. I don't remember how I was solving such problems so far, but I know that I have always been missing: % maybe even some external file with extremely long code \starttikzpicture{picture name} ... \stoptikzpicture \placefigure{some figure}{\usetikzpicture{picture name}} If that was implemented, maybe \usetikzpicture could be inside an hbox? passing buffer to lua functions

How to prevent this while keeping the lua escape at the same time? Texlive2008 and updating context

After running sudo ctxtools --updatecontext and luatools --generate everything went smooth. But after texexec --make --luatex en I got the following Should I create the cache path /home/mehdi? Anyone wants [another] "I love ConTeXt" T-shirt?

Dear ConTeXt fans, I'm goint to buy another bunch of T-shirts tomorrow and we will reprint them with "I love ConTeXt", in another (hopefully better) printing technique*. If anyone wants [another] T-shirt (or long sleeves) in whatever color that's available in the shop (dark works best), please let me know the size(s) and color(s). [Two tiny photo samples attached.] I'll send them out once in November for 6 EUR + shippment costs (or I can bring them to some conference, like DANTE meeting in Vienna or BachoTeX or ...). Hopefully I'll have the DVDs with videos ready by then as well, so that I will be able to send DVDs to anyone interested in the same package. index in swedish doc (mkiv)

Hi all, I want to have an index in a swedish document, but when I add it I get "unknown" instead of the "letter heads". Minimal file: %%%% \mainlanguage[sv] \starttext Test\index{test} \placeindex \stoptext %%%% Just uncomment the \mainlanguage[sv] and you will get a "t" instead of "unknown" as expected. If there is something that has to be added when it comes to swedish indices I am willing to do that. By the way, this problem does only appear in mkiv, in mkii it works as it should. Hi, It is said that Asymptote has supported PRC format 3D file: http://asymptote.sourceforge.net/gallery/3D%20graphs/ I really wanna give it a try, but once I was building from the svn source, I was told that I don't have LaTeX in my $PATH. I haven't really been using LaTeX for a long time, and I prefer I don't need to install a bunch of LaTeX programs and packages just for a drawing program which, IMHO, only use LaTeX to make nice labels. Is there any workarounds? bug in mkiv - paragraph column in tables

Hi all, The following simple table doesn't work right under mkiv. The baseline of the paragraph (2nd) column is much lower than other columns. The same code works fine under mkii. Hi, I wanted to share some observations from enabling the latest MkIV code (2008.09.24, compiled luatex from svn just now) to run on a new installation of TeXLive 2008 on 64bit Linux. This is my first time trying MkIV. First -- a comment on installing using TeXLive 2008, which hopefully is helpful to others. In my installation I noticed that x86-64/bin/luatools was symlinked to texmf-dist/scripts/context/stubs/unix/luatools. The rsync update process as outlined on garden does not update this file; it updates texmf-dist/scripts/context/lua/luatools.lua. So this needs to be copied (or linked) over to make the update work. The same issues exists with mtxrun. The symptom was a broken "context --make". Now, on to my issues. I am listing anything that used to work in my TeXLive 2007 installation of MkII but fails in 2008 (MkII or MkIV). Items 1-3 were tested on garden as well to ensure it was not an issue in my setup -- 1. \placefloat[here]{none} fails. \placegraphic works instead. This works on MkII. See test_placefloat.tex. 2. MkIV fails due to the \startcolor...\stopcolor sequence embedded in a natural table (see test_color.tex). A working alternative is commented in that file. 3. MkIV will not typeset the file test.tex. It is due to using {style=\switchtobodyfont[tt]} in the table setup. Using [modern,tt] works fine, but this is not necessary with MkII. 4. This is a MkII issue (or maybe it is a pdftex problem?) MkII on 2007, texexec --dvi on 2008, and MkIV all work. The problem is with pulling in an external figure like this -- \externalfigure[/tmp/testfigure] The files /tmp/testfigure.eps and /tmp/testfigure.pdf exist. This should use the full path to find the file, and will pick the eps when creating dvi and the pdf when creating pdf's. As mentioned, this works with every combination I tested except 2008 MkII. Some (not very usable for me) workarounds are -- - use the filename without the path and add the path using \setupexternalfigures[directory=] - specify the .pdf extension (means I cannot typeset to dvi if I want to; I find this useful for previewing with xdvi's auto-reload) - use \setupexternalfigures[directory=/] and use a relative path 5. Just a comment on performance -- I noticed that using MkIV on a complicated document I have took 23 minutes vs. 12 minutes with MkII. I didn't know if MkIV is expected to be slower/comparable/faster at this stage. Anyway, I hope this is useful to other users and to the developers. Best Regards, Brian

Flaky pdf file.

Recent texlive 2008 installed on Linux Slackware 12.0 system. I have a file that I can process via texexec and which shows up fine on my Acrobat Reader, kpdf or xpdf. However another person using (probably) Windows keeps getting corrupt file errors when he tries to read it. switching (named) layouts?

Hi, Is it possible to give a layout definition a name? It would be really helpful to be able to say \definelayout[name=one][...] \definelayout[name=two][...] and then to be able to say: \setuplayout[one] and somewhere else in the document \setuplayout[two] (This would mirror the way it is possible to switch papersizes.) Or is there another way to have different collections of \definelayout settings that can be switched on or off at specific places? What is the best approach? Thanks, Jelle

Can we make font loading much faster?

Hi: The following cases all use second run of context. So there is no font cache time. I use a new installed Windows XP SP3 on a Core 2 Duo 1.68GHz with 1GB mem machine. Only TeXWorks and ConTeXt are installed and running on the machine. I close all pre-installed software (like MSN, IE, etc.) and leave all extra memory for LuaTeX. Only 3 big chinese font, AdobeSongStd-Light, AdobeHeitiStd-Regular, AdobeKaitiStd-Regular are loaded. Magazines might use twenty or more. So if we want to use the standard way (use chinese font as body font, use virtual fonts mechanism to mix the font with latin fonts, use different alternatives for single chinese font) as the zhfonts.tex is presented, the running time here is usually intolerable (more than 3 minutes' loading time with very simple text for three fonts). A simple XeLaTeX file with three font embeding using XeCJK or zhspacing for interchartoken font switching usually runs less than 8 seconds. In this case, all the family (rm, ss, tt) parts (like bf, it, etc) in NFSS are defined. So, I think there should be a way to improve the font loading procedure. Maybe we had made deep copy to every fontsynonym defined here which made the loading time terribly long? Are there some way to mirror all the unchanged part of a new loading font B from a loaded time A and only leave the modified table when A and B points to same physical font? Thanks. Yue Wang

Fonts: Minimals v. Texlive 2007

Thanks to everyone who helped me get the minimals installed. I am having a little trouble. At my home computer, I have the Context installation for Ubuntu 7.04 from the sanjoy tex-live backports. At work I now have the minimals, --context=current, not beta. I expected that the output of these two systems would be nearly identical. They are not. I do not use any special font handling. I let Context handle it all. I use whatever the default fonts are, and use \setupbodyfont only to set fontsize. The same source run on both machines produces slightly different margins and slightly different font sizes. The minimals are smaller (shorter) for the same font size (11 pt). I really would like to get the same output for both systems. Can anyone help with this? -Erich Fickel

Hello, I have some weird problems with descriptions, but let's start at the beginning. (I have more problems with understanding how they work, but more about the rest later.) 1.) How do I get some space between "title" and "abc"? (I currently put the space there manually.) If I set distance=1em, weird things start happening. 2.) What exactly does "hang=1" do? I have no idea what it does there, but that was the only way to get the desired result, else everything gets indented. width=fit makes problems. How to get rid of space around itemize?

Hello, I'm trying to remove space before (and after) items in the following example, but the only way I have managed to do that was by using \vskip-\lineheight, which I'm not particulary proud of. math font size in captions (and other places)

Dear all, I want small caption texts in a document. However, neither of the following two alternatives work: %%%%% %\setupcaptions[style=small] \setupcaptions[style=\tfx] \starttext \placefigure[here][none]{Some math $x=y$}{Dummy figure} \stoptext %%%%% In both cases the text is small, but math font is not changed. I can solve this by doing a \switchtobodyfont in the caption, but I'd like to do it only once and for all. I guess I have the same problem in all environments where there is a style= parameter. (For now, I also would like to set it in \setupmarginblocks. I've tested this both on mkii and mkiv and with updated (minimal) ConTeXt. Fun with Bibtex

Hi all I'm using Taco's Bibtex module and got some problems with it. \setupbibtex[database=xxxxxx,sort=author] \setuppublications[alternative=apa-de,refcommand=authoryear,monthconversion=month] \placepublications[criterium=all] ... works fine. The references list contains only publications referenced in the document. Unfortunately, I was forced to use a special bst file, since I needed to change the fields of the entrytype "misc". As I didn't find a way to make ConTeXt or texexec aware of this new file living in my document's directory, I deleted the database parameter, customised the aux file and ran bibtex by myself. The problem is, that, with the new method, only a very small subset of the referenced publication makes it into the list. If I add "criterium=all" to the setuppublications command, I get the whole database, whether the pub is referenced or not. Any ideas? Thanks and regards Peter -- Ist Ihr Browser Vista-kompatibel? Hi, it's me again. :) Why can I only click the green dots left of the words but not the words themself? setupinteraction breaks urls in MKⅣ

minimum source: \setupinteraction[state=start] \starttext \useURL[u][http://www.x.com/] see \from[u]. \stoptext It works: • in MKⅡ • in MKⅣ only if the first line is commented, i.e. without setupinteraction. It doesn't work in MKⅣ, no change by updating to latest. Are there any known workarounds? It makes my bibliography undeliverable … Thanks, - Matthias

Hallo! I tried to download and unzip context-setup-mswin.zip. The wiki says 'Run first-setup.bat, go for a coffee.' But thats not possible. I am six times asked for a replacement name for 'page-log.tex' which does not exist. I gave him 'page-log.mkii' and finally all goes ok.
