Problem with fonts

Luatex beta 0.31 update warning

Hi all, Quick warning from me: if you update from the minimals this week, be prepared for some potential problems with opentype fonts in luatex. Because of the update of the embedded fontforge, there are some differences in the font table format that Hans and I have yet to sort out. While that will not take long, it will still mean the beginning of next week at the earliest (because Hans is teaching in Brno). texexec ignores file order

When I concatenate files with texexec, I often have more than 10 files I want to pass to texexec names filename1.pdf, filename2.pdf, ... filename12.pdf, etc. In the past, the following has worked to concatenate these in the correct order: texexec --pdfarrange --result=filename.pdf `ls -a -v filename*.pdf` Now, even if I pass filename10.pdf after filename2.pdf on the command line, texexec ingores this and puts filename10.pdf before filename2.pdf in the resulting concatenated file. Is there a fix for this, or is there a better way to concatenate pdf files? bb

Dear Mojca, Yue, and Hans, Thank you for the help. I updated ConTeXt and LuaTeX using rsync to the foler .../texlive/ 2008/../texmf-local. "texmfstart texexec --make (--xtx) --all" run smoothly, but luatools still has a cnf error. I'll do it again from the beginning when I have time. However, it works fine in ConTeXt-minimal. One day Mr. Wolfgang tried to do some work to set up standardization of CJK for MKIV. However, it is not easy because Korean use space between words. The rules of line break for Korean is simple in saying. We don't need any hyphenation inside word, so if it is longer than the \textwidth, just make a line break at that position. There may be a little adjustment to make it right flush. For the details of the line breaking system for Korean, I'll talked to the people in KTUG. Some experts in KTUG will answer how to do that. For ConTeXt, there is a font-kor.tex(by nomos) file which enable to use Korean in ConTeXt. So they know what and how to do. I hope that we find a good solution which is also good for the implementation in MKIV. Thank you again. Best regards, Dalyoung

The ConTeXt module for interaction with the statistical programming language R currently does not work with MKIV since buffers are not saved to file. The included file fixes this by calling \savebuffer on the buffer in case \ctxlua is defined (a trick gleaned from a discussion on the LilyPond module a while back). Also, all calls to R used to include a rather annoying proc.time() statement at the end, and a modified R call has fixed this. PATH must contain R or R.exe on Windoze. Should 'texmfstart' still be used for the R calls? A third modification involves being able to call \startRnoecho (which only echoes R output in the ConTeXt file) in addition to \startR (which echoes both input and output) and \startRhidden (which echoes nothing, useful for generating graphics) One further improvement would be to collect the R snippets and run them all at once. That would significantly reduce processing time since the R startup is on the order of a few seconds. However, that is beyond my knowledge of ConTeXt. report: non-stretchable spaces after periods

In a message some time ago, Wolfgang suggested that \def\ {\thinspace} would serve to get non-expanding or non-stretchable spaces after periods that occur within sentences and in bibliographies. When I discovered that, while this worked well in limited contexts, in a lengthy bibliography which relied on the period as the main form of punctuation it lead quickly to numerous line-breaking problems. So Wolfgang has now has kindly proposed \def\ {\hskip.1666em\relax} since \hskip is a TeX primitve and mentioned in every (plain) TeX manual. And I gratefully confirm that this works very well. Alan

Sorting references

Hi all, Using the bib module, I want my references to be sorted alphabetically; if I understood correctly the doc: \setuppublications[alternative=apa-fr,sorttype=bbl,criterium=cite] Then the alphabetical order is taken from the bibtex *keys*, and it doesn't always follows true alphabetical order... :-( And it seems that with bbl the whole bbl content is necessarily written in references. question about rulethickness

Hi all, It looks like rulethickness can only be applied to all 4 sides of a cell all at once, or is there a way to specify the thickness of left|right|top|bottom? Dangling lines.

I created an Author's note (code below). It is designed to print out a note, skip a line, and then follow with the Author's signature. The problem I'm having is that ConTeXt will break the page just before the author's signature leaving it dangling on the next page. If I use a \vbox, that has problems when the notes need to go more than the current page. How to get the total page number at startup in luatex?

calling a function with complex parameters

Dear All, I need to fill a lua table with data, and some values may be tables. How to supply that data from ConTeXt? The most straightforward way is to make user fill a string with lua code of table initiaiser and then use "loadstring". In this case the syntax is laconic, but resilence in case of errors is zero. The other way is to have the user to call series of functions, building the complex structure from ground up by making basic stuctures and adding them to final structure one by one. In this case the passed parameters can be scrutinized for correctness, but multiple calls like "addsmthtosmth", "setsmthinsmth" will make the result uneasy to read, to say nothing of writing. What is considered kosher in ConTeXt? Where can I found examples? can not include movie

Dear All, ConTeXt user manual says movies are just like figures, but when I process \starttext \placefigure[here]{none}{\externalfigure[demo.mov][width=0.7\textwidth, height=.7\textwidth, label=demo, preview=yes]} \stoptext with context filename.tex using the latest minimals without any custom settings I do not get movie included. Nice eh? Actually, while the first field module was prototyped in ACROBAT, the current implementation was debugged in \fillinfield [pdfTeX] {\PDFTEX}. Field support in \fillinfield [ConTeXt] {\CONTEXT} is rather advanced and complete and all kind of fields are supported. One can hook in appearances, and validation \fillinfield [JavaScripts] {JAVASCRIPT}'s. Fields can be cloned and copied, where the latter saves some space. Important: ConTeXt Minimals and --delete/--keep switch

Hello, This is a rather important notice for users of ConTeXt minimals. You might want to add --keep to ./first-setup.sh There are some options for which I'm not sure if they should be enabled by default or not. The script (mtx-update.lua and consequently the simplistic ./first-setup.sh script) provides two switches: --keep and --delete. The --delete switch deletes all the files that are not part of distribution. The --keep switch doesn't care about those files (that have been remove from distribution or that you added) and leaves them where they are. Your own files should go to texmf-local that update doesn't touch at all. Now the important info: if you want your files to be kept, you should use the --keep switch in ./first-setup.sh. --delete has been misfunctional for a while, and maybe it should not be kept as the default option. But as it stands now, it is the default. Recently there has been a new option added (--extras=list,of,context,modules), but I would like the option to be renamed to something more self-explanatory than --extras= (--modules= for example). You can test if fetching modules works OK, but I would like to rename the option. Mojca (Maybe we should add --cvs-exclude rule to rsync to prevent deleting kpathsea files and formats.)

But by adding the command "\XeTeXlinebreaklocale[ko]" the overfull errors were cleared in XeTeX+ ConTeXt. Is there a similar command in LuaTeX to handle the overfull errors? Disabling automatic hyphenation

Hi Hans, I wan't to disable in a document TeX's automatic hyphenation and allow only manuell brackpoints with \- or settings in \hyphenation. The only working solution I found was to define new language in the core and add a file with empty patterns to the core files, my setting for the language is \def\s!empty{empty} \installlanguage [\s!empty] [\c!default=\s!en, \s!patterns=\s!empty, \c!state=\v!stop] I use now the patterns of this language in my document and set now my own hyphen points with \hyphenation. Can you add this to your own files or do you have a better solution for my problem. Wolfgang

chapter-like headings with separate numbering

I'm experimenting with making a heading that is like a chapter in format but has its own numbering (or lettering). The purpose to have an interlude, or extended example, every few chapters. The following almost-minimal example almost does so. However, the second interlude is numbered with 'A' instead of 'B'. Hi, the \translateinput command has a problem with discretionaries in the replacement text. In the following example \usemodule[translate] \translateinput[Auflage][Auf|*|lage] \starttext Auflage \enableinputtranslation Auflage \stoptext I get a error message. ! Undefined control sequence. l.11 Auf\CCC :4:124 *\CCC:4:124 lage I could prevent the message after I protected the | signs with \translateinput[Auflage][Auf\string|*\string|lage] but can't this be done in the \translateinput macro itself. hz option

Hi: I read the context manual --- typography (by Taco Hoekwater) and found that if I want to enable hz and margin kerning, I should add a line like: \setupalign[hanging] however, when I read the style.pdf document, it said something like this: \setupalign[hanging,hz] and compiling a document with or without hz option will result in different line breaks. So I think one of the manuals should be corrected? Yue Wang

Gnuplot should now work on MKIV

Hello, since Aditya was asking yesterday: I finally patched the gnuplot module to work with mkiv. There are still some parts for which I'm almost sure that they don't work (I didn't test, but at least an average gnuplot run should not need those features): 1.) colored labels ... Because withcolor doesn't work; but now that I intercept textext, maybe I can do some dirty tricks there. 2.) drawing points with TeX \setupGNUPLOTterminal[context][points=tex] \defineconversion[gnuplot:pointset][x,+,$\circ$] ... Because I first need to rewrite some code that used some dirty tricks with \startTeXtexts. 3.) changing font with gnuplot commands set title "Nice Title" font "iwona,20" ... Because Aditya wrote a patch that enables two arguments in \sometxt and that patch doesn't work in mkiv any more. Mojca PS: despite switching to mkiv, "reports still don't get written by themselves" :) :) :)

File fails to compile

Dear all, I made a poster about two months ago. Today I cloned it to make a different one. I am using MacTex 2008 distribution and XeConTeXt . I am using fonts such as Hoefler, Gentium, Junicode etc. The original file and the new one stick at the console readout below. I uninstalled 2008 distribution completely and reinstalled but I get the same result. The files give me pdf output if I use just ConTeXt but of course I do not get the fonts. Optical scaling

Dear All, among advertised advantages of TeX there used to be "optical scaling", when text in the same font but in different sizes has different shapes of glyphs. That used to be the feature of metafont fonts and derived PostScript ones (like cm-super). But it seems now, with TeX Gyre becoming the default free fonts set, it seems the idea is dropped. Is it really so or one just needs some commercial OpenType font family to use it (Adobe Opticals)? Sincerely, Michail

definepagebreak: problem at the end of front, body & backmatter

In the sample code below, I defined the document to be doublesided and that chapters should open on the right. If the chapter ends on an odd page, I want to leave the even page completely blank (no headers, footers, page numbers, etc.). The code below works except for the last chapter in the frontmatter, bodymatter, and backmatter. For the last chapter in those divisions, the page is not blank, but has the header & footers. metapost code fails to work in mkiv

Hello, A while back I wrote this dirty code (read as: hack) in attachment that allows multiple optional parameters in metapost functions, for example: draw_text("text"); draw_text(angle(30),"text"); draw_text(angle(30),align(right),"text"); draw_text(align(center),"text"); The code compiles fine with mkii, but not with mkiv. muse, pandoc and context

Dear list members, Despite using a text editor (emacs) and context almost exclusively, I need a way to communicate with other members of the institute. I'm evaluating two possibilities: 1. Writing in markdown and using pandoc for conversion to either context or something openable by a word processor. 2. Writing in emacs muse and publishing to -- see above. I would like to know the following: - Has anybody done the same and come to a conclusion? Reasons? - Is my impression correct that with muse one has fewer possibilities such as sub/superscripts? I'm aware of the threads in the archive, but would like to have an updated, concise opinion. Slightly off topic, but thanks for your answers, Jörg

Centering an image in framed.

I am using framed and externalfigure commands. I want to put a rule around the image; however, the image has space around all sides. It appears that the top, right, and left sides has the same gap. However, the bottom side has a huge (by comparison) gap. So I can't use a negative offset to fix the problem. context minimals on OpenSolaris 2008.11

Hello list members and ConTeXt gods, this question is more technical than TeXnical but none the less ConTeXt releated. Today I am investigating if I can replace linux with OpenSolaris, so I am testing every, even exotic, software that I use on my linux box on OpenSolaris. Looking into first-setup.sh there seem to be support for Solaris on Intel hardware called "sunos-intel". HI ConTeXt friends! I've been using Gedit on my ubuntu system for quite some time and is very much happy with it. Here are some advantages: * UTF-8 encoding by default (which is in mind for LuaTeX). * highly configurable code snippets. reading xml-files. * Defining your own typesetting commands and associate it with some keycombination. Drawbacks * Syntax highlighting for LaTeX but works for context-specific also * I'm not sure if it is portable to windows * Some learning curve to learn how to create special ConTeXt plugin like this http://live.gnome.org/Gedit/LaTeXPlugin I've recently tested texworks but it seems missing the snippets capabilities. Hello, We have a document with a 2-column layout where we have section headers that keep ending up at the bottom of columns. E.g. \startsectionheading{2. Foo bar baz}\stopsectionheading where \startsectionheading is defined by: \definestartstop [sectionheading] [before={ \startalignment[middle]}, after={\stopalignment \bigskip}, style={\switchtobodyfont[...,...]}] In order to make sure this section heading gets followed by a line or two of actual text, I saw on web pages [1] and [2] that you can use \testpage[n] to check whether there is room for n more lines, and if not, to produce a page break. I checked the manual [3] and command reference [4] but couldn't find information about \testpage. Is there a corresponding command to conditionally produce a column break? UTF-8 Problems with the minimals

Hi, after reinstalling the minimals (my HD crashed), I have got the following problem: texexec doesn't recognize UTF-8 any more :-(. I didn't change my tex-files and enabled UTF-8 with: \enableregime[utf-8] Surprisingly "context file.tex" works. I have no idea what is wrong with my MKII. Any suggestions? Thx. Greetings FloMo

vertical alignment in footer

Hello: I am a recent convert from LaTeX to conTeXt. kudos to all the developers! I have read through the wiki and as many tutorials/manuals as I can find. My problem is that I have a footer which includes a logo. I would like all the elements in the footer to be vertically centred, where as now they are aligned along the bottom. minimals: cannot find cmsy10.pfb

While testing Norbert's latest Debian packages, I ran across the following font problem with the recent ConTeXt minimals. The following test file: ========= cut here ============= \usetypescript[palatino][ec] \definetypeface [palatino] [mm] [math] [euler] [euler] [rscale=1.03] \setupbodyfont[palatino,11pt] \starttext $\equiv$ \stoptext ========= cut here ============= fails with: !pdfTeX error: pdftex (file cmsy10.pfb): cannot open Type 1 font file for readi ng ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! Among the many map files that are read in, only original-public-lm.map mentions cmsy10.pfb, and it contains this mapping: cmsy10 CMSY10 <cmsy10.pfb Since cmsy10.pfb isn't in the minimals, I tried to fake it by symlinking to the texlive fonts and running mktexlsr, but that didn't work. The ls-R database contained cmsy10.pfb, but kpsewhich cmsy10.pfb wouldn't find it. Another workaround that I tried was to add this line \pdfmapfile{+pdftex.map} to the start of the test file. But that trick only produced errors about duplicated fontmap entries. I'm using Debian GNU/Linux i386, context minimals 2008.11.10 w/ MKII. I tested it with the 2008.10.31 minimals but found the same problem. I can also test it with other versions. Is there a list of available dates to feed the --context=YYYY.MM.DD switch? -Sanjoy

I am running the ConTeXt Minimals of 11/10 and am trying to access Times New Roman using the script \usetypescript [timesnewroman][ec] \definetypeface[timesnewroman][rm][serif][timesnewroman][default] [encoding=ec] \definebodyfont[9pt,11pt][rm][default] \setupbodyfont[timesnewroman,rm,11pt] I am not sure what I getting and I am puzzled by the log file , hence, my question: Is Times New Roman distributed with the minimals and is this the way to access it? difference between TeX behavior and ConTeXt

Hello, I've been reading through the TeXbook to solidify the foundations for TeX programming. In an exercise on roman and italic text, ConTeXt seems to behave differently from what the book specifies (Plain TEX) at a fairly fundamental level. Exercise 4.1 says, "Explain how to typeset a roman word in the midst of an italicized sentence." I wrote, and the solution in the appendix says, {\it Explain how to typeset a\/ {\rm roman} word in the midst of an italicized sentence.} But when I typeset this using texexec, the word "roman" appears in italic, just like the rest of the sentence. I tried this on both Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux, with both PDFTex and Xetex engines. On Windows I'm using ConTeXt minimal, and on Linux I'm using ConTeXt from the TeXLive 2008 CD. The result is the same in all cases: all the text is italicized. Does this difference in behavior represent a known "feature" of ConTeXt? If so, is it a difference in the defined behavior of \rm? When I put \show\rm in the .tex file to display the definition of the \rm macro, and run texexec, I get: > \rm=\protected macro: ->\setcurrentfontstyle {rm}. l.7 \show\rm By contrast, according to http://webpages.charter.net/davidlha/.trm/trmi.html, "Plain TeX defines \rm to be `\fam=0 \tenrm'." So clearly the definition of the \rm macro is different in ConTeXt than it is in Plain TeX. I could understand ConTeXt possibly changing the details of \rm's definition, e.g. a change in default font family; but it would really be surprising to find that the logic of \rm's behavior has been changed. Please help me understand if this is a bug or if there is a design principle of ConTeXt that I should be aware of... Thanks, Lars
