I have a dim recollection that this question has been asked before, but I have not been able to find the answer. So please excuse me if this goes over old ground. I have prepared a fairly complex table (using \starttables) that has notes to various entries. What I should like is to • mark the notes with the letters, a, b, c,... • put the notes immediately beneath the table caption (in single column text) and to keep the notes with the table, and • maintain the proper sequence of numbered footnotes in the surrounding text. Any suggestions or pointers to previous discussions will be gratefully received. Alan

XeConTeXt bug report III: Wrong hyperlink

Hi, Hans and Jin-Hwan: When using ConTeXt to produce my documents, I found that all hyperlinks are wrong. And here is a simple test. The tex and pdf files are attached in the mail. The problem will happen when: 1) using pdftex to produce the dvi, and use dvipdfmx to convert the dvi to pdf. 2) using xetex to produce xdv, and xdvipdfmx that xdv to pdf. Open the file in Acrobat Reader, Go to page three, and you can see a hyperlink text "Equation 1", it links to page 2. however, the equation is in page1. The "section 1" or "page 4" should point to page 4, but it point to page 5 now. So my question: - As far as I know, dvipdfmx's ConTeXt support was written by Jin-Hwan. and the hyperlink code is written by Hans. Surely at least one of the two source code files has a cross-ref bug. But I don't know which. Can the bug be fixed? Thanks Yue Wang

XeConTeXt bug report I: strange benchmark

Hi, Hans and Jonathan: I made some testing samples in ConTeXt to test XeTeX. but the result is quite strange. All benchmark are get from the second run: Sample 1: \definefont[a][file:SimSun] \starttext \dorecurse{10000}{ hello {\a 你好}} \stoptext And here is the result: XeTeX: TeXExec | runtime: 7.25 LuaTeX: MTXrun | total runtime: 6.719 This is considerablly ok. So we can say that the font switching is pretty fast. Sample 2: \definefont[a][file:AdobeSongStd-Light.otf] \starttext \dorecurse{10000}{ hello {\a 你好}} \stoptext XeTeX: TeXExec | runtime: 63.65 LuaTeX: MTXrun | total runtime: 8.156 Here I only change the font from SimSun to Adobe Song (the two fonts are almost at the same sice [~10M]). But the xetex result is very differt from the previous run. it consumes one minute to compile the file. However, in this time we define a typescript, and make all the styles fall into SimSun. Now xetex behaves quite strangely: it uses one minutes to compile this single document... So my question is - why loading otf is so slow? - is this a bug in context or in xetex? can it be fixed? - how can we make sample 3 (using typescript) run faster? Thanks. Yue Wang

Chinese opentype fonts can not be loaded in luatex-plain

Hi Hans, I tried to use Chinese opentype fonts with luatex + plain fmt but I failed. Only with Chinese TTF fonts it can work. Howto add a # sign to a \button URL?

Hallo, I try to send a message from a pdf to a webserver. This works fine, unless the URL has a `#' in it. Then TeX throws an error: ! Illegal parameter number in definition of \!!stringa I tried to work around it with \edef'ing a \doublecross macro which expands to \char35, but this did not work. I also tried some extensive use of \noexpand and \expandafter, but it failed, too. Obviously, there's some \csname...\endcsname stuff going on when creating the URL. Hi, I read the document "Using \startalign and friends" of Aditya (that it's good) and I can't find anything under ams aligned. Is this an equivalent in ConText? [***SPAM***] Bug? \getmarking fails under some circumstances

Hello, I'm new to ConTeXt, so this is perhaps not a bug but a fault on my side. Under some circumstances, the living column heads fail to refer to the subsubject. As you can see from the attached minimal example \startsetups[header] \getmarking[subject]\ $\cdot$ \getmarking[subsubject] \stopsetups will yield something like »Mikrotypografie *«, though it should be »Mikrotypografie * Absatzumbruch«. If you uncomment the \subsubject-line at the end of the example, everything works as expected unless you uncomment the former line, too. A workaround is to add a \vfill\eject just before the next \subject. XeConTeXt bug report II: MetaPost Graphics

However, when 1) using pdftex to produce the dvi, and convert the dvi using dvipdfmx 2) using xetex to produce the pdf using xdvipdfmx the figure is placed at the wrong place. there will be a displacement for all the metapost figures when xetex is used to produce the graphics. I attach the wrong result in the mail. So my question is : - is this a bug in ConTeXt, or in (x)dvipdfmx. can the bug be fixed? Thanks Yue Wang

texts in \component files are not present

Dear all, Text in component files are not included in the attached example. I also put the log file in it. The log shows that the component files were found and complied but their texts were not present in the generated pdf file. I'm not sure whether I did anything wrong in the example or not. narrow space in "\ldots."

Hello ConTeXt folks, I'm quite new to ConTeXt. I like it. It's way more systematic than LaTeX. Here's my first question. When omitting the last part of a sentence, I want four periods: This is a long sentence which\ldots. LaTeX produces equally-spaced four periods, but with ConTeXt, the last space is narrower than the preceding two. (See examples below.) I guess that LaTeX specifically designed its \ldots with this use (sentence-ending four dots) in mind. How can one fix it in ConTeXt? I use the "context" package version 2008.05.21-1 on Debian testing. The LaTeX is from the texlive-latex packages. beta (11.05.2009): js interaction

Hi, some problems with js interaction stuff. I get ! Undefined control sequence. \dopresetfieldsymbol #1->\checkobjectreferences for nearly all interaction fields in mkiv. Mkii compiles, but the pop-up tooltip is only a black box (not the text 'tooltip'). I also had some problems with PDF layer in mkiv (corrupt pdf with older betas; will investigate after this one is fixed). *Not urgent at all.* Minimal example: ---------------- \setupinteraction[state=start] \starttext Just a \tooltip{test}{tooltip}. \stoptext Time for some good news. There is nearly nothing left, that I have not tested (well, most is MP related). No further problems here (luatex0.40.1, mpost1.2). And hex colors in mkii work again :) Best wishes, Peter

Two issues related to xetex

Hi, Hans and Mojca: first, (to Mojca) the first-setup.sh script still deletes fontconfig cache when updating on windows. second, (to Hans) unicode-letters.tex is read when we dump plain TeX or LaTeX format in TeXLive. This file is wrote by Jonathan Kew in order to initialize XeTeX. It defines many important unicode properties into XeTeX. However, ConTeXt do not load that file when dumping the xetex format. The file is not even in ConTeXt distribution. I suggest that the file should be loaded. You can find the file in http://scripts.sil.org/svn-public/xetex/TRUNK/texmf/tex/generic/xetex/unico… XeTeX's plain TeX ini file can be find in http://scripts.sil.org/svn-public/xetex/TRUNK/texmf/tex/xetex/config/xetex.… If the file is not loaded, thousands of lines should be copied to third party modules (like the module I announce on the mailing list today) in order to support some language correctly. This method is quite messy, not to say inefficient for loading. Yue Wang

New module t-zhspacing

Dear list: Chinese TeX Society is proud to announce the t-zhspacing module to the ConTeXt society. The module is developed by Yue Wang based on Yin Dian's zhspacing.sty macro package and Jonathan Kew's unicode-letters.tex + xetex interchartoks mechanism. It is designed for the audience who interested perfect Chinese typesetting using ConTeXt and XeTeX. It handles Chinese font loading, switching, line breaking, and punctuation compression rules quite well. Moreover, since the freetype's performance is much better than fontforge's on large cjk fonts, so the document compilation can be much faster. Users are free to visit http://code.google.com/p/ctex-kit/, and the code is in svn (the trunk/zhspacing directory) now. Font switching question

Hi, Hans: I am working on Chinese support on XeTeX/ConTeXt and I almost finished that. I will later upload a module called t-zhspacing to the garden (or CTAN?). But there is one last problem. Let me explain like this. Suppost I have two typescripts (typeA and typeB) and both with complete typeface defined (rm/ss/tt, bf/it/bfit/smcp....) Now I want to do something like this: \usetypescript[typeA] \usetypescript[typeB] \setupbodyfont[typeA] This should be typeA/rm/normal \it and this should be typeA/rm/it \ss and this should be typeA/ss/it %here everything is ok in context \typeB this should be typeB/ss/it %(but context gives me typeB/rm/normal. Hi, hex colors don't work anymore in mkii (no problems in mkiv). All I get is black (reminds me of a song by the Rolling Stones)... I see a red door and I want it painted black No colors anymore I want them to turn black ... Chapter number in right margin?

Hi all, I'm typesetting a double-sided document. And I want the chapter numbers to be in the right margin, while the chapter titles remain in the main text area. So I write \def\MyChapter#1#2 {\inright{#1} #2} \setuphead [chapter] [command=\MyChapter] But it renders such that all the chapter numbers disappear while chapter titles seem normal. Any idea? Hi, there are still some problems with footnotes and overprinting. I have reactivated the old (sorry, non minimal) example for that. But for three problems it is pretty short :) 1. the footnote uses '1' instead of the chosen '*' (set 1) 2. the footnote marker is not bound to the footnote text (only the text is moved right) 3. the problem with the undefined \PDFobjectreferenceB occurs again, if overprinting is used (see different versions of \NoteNumber and \MyFootnote) One additional note to 3.) I have to enable overprinting for both the marker and the text to get the desired result (all should be overprinted). Is this intended? loading bib module breaks colors in tikz figures (mkiv)

Hello, Not that I understand why this happens (bug trigger looks extremely weird), but if I load bib module, the colors in TikZ graphic are lost. Commenting out bib module returns the color back. (I remember reporting lack of colors not so long ago, though I'm not sure if it was in pdftex or luatex.) I'm using - ConTeXt MKIV 2009.05.08 21:48 - LuaTeX beta-0.40.1 - approximately CVS version of TikZ \usemodule [bib] \usemodule [tikz] \starttext \starttikzpicture \filldraw[fill=green!20,draw=green!50!black] (0,0) -- (60:3cm) arc (60:120:3cm) -- cycle; \stoptikzpicture \stoptext Can anyone please confirm the bug? rscale in latest beta

Hi all, the "rscale" key does not work for my Greek module in the latest beta ConTeXt ver: 2009.05.08 21:48 MKIV The font always stays the same size, no matter what value I give. It did work in the version 2009.04.21. I haven't been able to reproduce the error in a minimal file yet., but maybe Hans can say which files are likely to be the culprit so I can run a diff between these two versions? All best Thomas

Dear context users, at first a lot of warm thanks for help and comments on using t-simpleslides. On a different matter, I now have the following problem : I do a lot of testing trying compiling my slides (using the following command : "context essai.tex"). Sometimes, I get errors and an interactive prompt that I kill with either ctrl+C or ctrl+Z (at random). I noticed that my computer was swapping (2Go RAM). With "ps xa | grep lua" I get 34 process. Using "top" and sorting by memory used the processes, I noticed 7 instances of luatex and 5 of texlua on the first page for a total of 800MB of resident memory. Did I miss something using context (I do "context essai.tex" each time that I want compile changes) ? "killall luatex" and kill -15 PID does nothing. Best, Amaël

The reason for setuptex setting all those variables in the old days was to override tetex's environmental variables, but in principle this is not needed at all unless tetex is present on computer. The reason for removing them again was to make sure that Hans' scripts work properly even when no environmental variable is set (which will be the case on TeX Live for example). The only variable change that's really needed is fixing PATH, but it's so convenient to be able to run ". /path/to/setuptex" instead of typing the long export PATH="/path/to/minimals/bin:$PATH" We nevertheless left two or three variables since ConTeXt didn't yet work properly without them, but we'll remove those as well. If anyone uses minimals on tetex, we can create an additional file again that would enable complete isolation. We didn't clean up the windows script yet as it would need some more testing (and we had enough problem by minimals not running at all on unix), but that's still on TODO list ... We also silently added TEXMFHOME (while Hans was not watching), but maybe we need to change the exact path. If you have any particular question or request about that, let us know. Mojca

Hi all, I have to write a letter to a few dozens candidates in which some parts are not identical. I may have the list of the persons, and the changing part for each of them in a file (named for instance "list-of- candidates.tex") on which each line corresponds to one person and the fields are sperated by commas (or any other suitable character). What would be the best way of coding this in ConTeXt? The tricky thing was that I coiuld not find any clue in the logfile: leaving out both empty curly braces generates no error message and the file typesets beautifully except for this one detail, a vertical instead of the desired horizontal arrangement of two figures. But when one leaves out only one of the empty curly braces the file does not typeset at all and there is a clear (well, fairly clear) error message. But I do not want the figures framed. When I replace that piece with {\externalfigure[NameofFigure]}, the figures are placed vertically, both with [2*1] and with [1*2]. I have uploaded a folder with a small testfile, which on my Mac shows this behaviour, as you can see in the pdf. (For convenience I have entered the two possibilities in the testfile, one of them commented out.) It can be downloaded from http://web.me.com/blackstone.robert/filechute/Combining_Figures.zip. Hi All,I am working on a text that contains many combined figures, some side by side, some arranged vertically. I use, following “ConTeXt, an excursion”, \startcombination[1*2] and \startcombination[2*1] respectively. The first one works, the second doesn’t, that is, it also places the figures one above the other. It happens both with the “MacTeX”-version of ConTeXt and with the minimals. simpleslides ubuntu jaunty (9.04)

Dear list members, I'm a new user of conTeXt and was interested in the simpleslides module. It looks great and partially works but most graphical stuffs don't work : I've only the text using Mark IV, and get some of the graphical effects with Mark II (but not all) (I've attached pdf output and logs). I use a freshly installed ubuntu 9.04 I've installed the module (in my ~/texmf). I've added in /etc/environment the variable TEXMFCNF=/usr/share/texmf/web2c in order for luatools and MarkIV to work. cf http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Debian_installation#Postscript:_Mark_IV (the exemple file works) versions : $ texexec --lua -v TeXExec | version 6.2.0 - 1997-2006 - PRAGMA ADE/POD $ luatools -v LuaTools | version 1.2.0 - 2006+ - PRAGMA ADE / CONTEXT $ luatex -v This is LuaTeX, Version snapshot-0.28.0-2009041620 I hope that you have some hints on what I might have wrong, In mark IV, it looks like I have a version problem for metafun, but I'm not sure and don't now how to get the version number. gVim complier plugin question

I was trying to get the context compiler plugin for gvim working, but I think I may be misunderstanding something about the instructions. I keep getting a "compiler not found" error when I try to set the compiler so I must have done something wrong. I downloaded the texexec.vim plugin from http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=1925 and copied it to /usr/share/vim/vim70/compiler/texexec.vim I then opened a context file with gvim and typed ":compiler=texexec" and I get "E666: compiler not supported: =texexec" It seems like it must be a small mistake, but I'm at a loss to figure out what it is.
