Mk IV setup, \showcharacters

Hello, I'm a LaTeX user trying to move to ConTeXt Mk IV. I'm having trouble configuring my system on OS X. As a complete ConTeXt novice I'm not sure how to debug this, but I really want to get Mk IV working for some upcoming journal and book projects. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I understand that the current MacTeX/TeXLive 2009 testing versions have a broken Mk IV due to an old Luatex, so I installed MacTeX 2009 for testing and then upgraded Luatex to version 0.43 using the Contextgarden instructions for "Running Mark IV", regenerating the Context formats etc. using: "luatools --generate" "context --make --all" "context --make cont-en" (is this necessary if I do --make --all?) So far I can run a minimal test document and get pdf output, but I can't use \showaccents, \showcharacters, etc. -- I get an "undefined control sequence" error, The console output is below. I see the last line is referring to a .mkii file, I suspect that's the problem but I don't know how to get it to .mkiv... If this can be fixed, next I will work on getting TeXShop to use Mk IV; now it insists on using Mk II. Need an edited .engine file? virtual fonts in luatex?

Hi all, I'm running into a problem, but maybe not all hope is lost. For my Greek stuff, I will sometimes need a "dotbelowcomb" accent. Only very few fonts have that, but no problem, in mkiv, I can simply take that from a follback font: \definefontfallback [GreekFallback] [name:texgyretermesregular] [0x0323] [force=no,check=no] Now I would like to remap the exclam character to this dotbelowcom. Again, no problem: with a fea file, I can write a sub rule sub exclam by dotbelowcomb but I can't combine both approaches: if the font doesn't have the character, I get an error about "invalid glyph index." In good old pdftex, it was possible to define a virtual font for such occasions, and I seem to remember that there's something similar in mkiv, but I'm unsure how it can be done. Any pointers? Cambria integral operator

Hi all, I have been playing around a bit with the new ConTeXt Minimals and especially Cambria Math. I couldn't figure out, however, why the integral operator always comes out at about half the size of \sum or \prod. I couldn't find any relevant threads on the mailing list, but surely this is not the way it's supposed to be? Is there some list on the web showing what parts of math have been implemented, what still needs to be done (and, where someone with limited TeX knowledge could provide some assistance)? Hi ConTeXters I have just started my migration from LaTeX towards ConTeXt. So first of all thank you for the contributions. Four whole days and a lot of evenings have been invested in my migration project so far but now things also begin to move. But I really miss one thing from LaTeX. Mathdesign with URW Garamond is in my opinion the prettiest solution at all. So far I have managed to import the text font by the guidance from the wiki, but there doesn¹t seem be any implementation/translation of the mathpart. I know that the TeX world font-handling is developing and I have used XeTeX for non-math work for a while. Some of the work, I understand, includes OpenType Math and therefore it might be reactionary to wish for a translation, but has anyone thought about one anyway? interstrutline spacing

Dear gang, I am trying to create a grid background based on strut depth, so each line of text lies right in between the top and bottom of the respective strut. I borrowed some code from the wiki, and need help to solve the following [and I'm no metapost guru...]: 1. Line 31, 2nd line of pdf: How can I keep \framed[align={r2l,middle}] and get the interstrutline to still span the textwidth. In other words, every strutline should be of textwidth, regardless of alignment 2. Compare pages 2 and 3: page 2 has extra space at the top, perhaps a skipped line. How can I suppress that so that the first line always starts at the top of the textblock? 3. On page 3: How can I control the continuation of the strutlines past the final textline? What if, eg, I wanted to fill the rest of the page with strutlines? 4. How can I change the width and color of the strutline itself? 5. I use \setuplayout[grid=on], but I'm not sure that guarantees a grid ... \start-\stoplinecorrection seems to give a different result. [\showgrid seems broken so I can't directly compare]. Any tips to guarantee a grid? 6. Is there a way to pass the interstrutline background to \framed [so I don't have to type \start-\stopinterstrutline etc]? This kind of gridded background is very common in eg, the Arabic-script tradition, although it has many pedagogical and other uses as well. A general strutline mechanism might make a good addition to the distribution, or at least a nice module... Any help or tips to improve this background will be greatly appreciated! Figure referencing problems

Hi, I have troubles with referencing images. At first \in does not show a figure number but \at shows the correct page of the figure. In the archives I found a post from Wolfgang Schuster [1] with a sample that worked for him. Hi Hans, there's a problem with today's beta: at every run I get this error: Attempt to allocate memory failed. fontnames | identifying tree font files with suffix otfMTXrun | fatal error, no return code, message: luatex: execution interrupted even when I call something like this: mtxrun --script fonts --list --pattern="times*" MTXrun | fontnames: identifying tree font files with suffix otf Attempt to allocate memory failed. zsh: abort mtxrun --script fonts --list --pattern="times*" This is on OS X intel, if this matters. titlepage without page number

Hi! I guess this is a faq, but I didn’t find a way to do it … I want to use pagenumbers in the headings, but no pagenumber on the title page. I try it with: \setupheadertexts[] \setupheadertexts[\setups{header left}][pagenumber][pagenumber][\setups{header right}] \setupfooter[][] \startsetups[header right] \hfill \getmarking[chapter] \stopsetups \startsetups[header left] \getmarking[section] \hfill \stopsetups which gives me the headers I want. (Although I don’t understand why I have to specify the pagenumber two times) But on the titlepage, there is still a number, when I use it with the title module and say: \setuptitle[ page=no, title=…, header=empty, footer=empty ] \startfrontmatter \placetitle \stopfrontmatter I guess, I’m doing somthing wrong, but I cannot figure out what. And btw: Is there a possibility to just print the pagenumber? Hope I made the problem clear, cheers Arno

How to disable the hypernation in verbatim environment

Hi all, I'm doing a book project with mkiv. I'm using protrusion and expansion with Adobe Garamond. This works wonderfully for the main text, but there's no protrusion and expansion in the footnotes. I tried setting it explicitly with \setupfootnotes[before=\enableprotruding] but I still get no protruding. Is this a bug, or how can I set this up for footnotes too? Thanks, and best wishes Thomas

Enumeration bug

Hi all, There might be a bug in the enumeration environment. First the enumeration definition contains the option location=top. When an enumeration item is started while there is already a figure placed left, then the enumeration tag shows up as expected, however the text of the enumeration item starts at the left border of the text area. If the option location is set to location=left, then in the same condition as above, the enumeration tag shows up to the right of the enumeration text and if the text is long, the tag is also overwritten. I tested this with the version of Context of 2009-10-02. For testing please refer to the attached file. Kind regards Willi

Is it possible to put references format depending of mainlanguage? and other things

Hi, I posted previously [http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2009/043675.html] but no one answer that. Is it possible to localizated bibliography module depending on \mainlanguage? I think for example in @inproceedings or @article in ams. It appears "number" for specifying the number of journal, but "number" is in english. It were useful if we could display "número" for \mainlanguage[es], "nombre" for \mainlanguage[ca], etc like we display tableofcontents or the title of references in \mainlanguage localization. For the other hand, is it possible to define second references like wikipedia? I plan to write a document that will have a normal bibliography citations (like \cite[bridson].... and display the book of Bridson) and a wikipedia-like citations for citing specifically paragraphs of text (that I want to display like wikipedia references \wikicite[This text appears in paragraph 2 of \cite[bridson] in a reject of ....]) Is it possible? My question is : how I can obtain french labels + french punctuation SIMULTANEOUSLY ;) I use the up-to-date context/metapost from minimals... And I can't use MK IV since I need t-vim... I have one file containing several letters that I process using Wolfgang's letter module. I have a special background for the first page of a letter. I define and set three layers: PCLogo, PCDept, and PCAddress. Here is a representative example: \definelayer [PCLogo] [width=\paperwidth, height=\paperheight, preset=lefttop, y=20pt, state=start] Then I make these layers backgrounds like so: \setupletterstyle[lettermain][background={PCLogo,PCDept,PCAddress}] The result I *get* is that the first letter in the file gets the background on its first page as normal. But the subsequent letters do not. Their first pages are plain. The result I *want* is for each letter to have the background on its first page, like the first letter in the file gets. Further, on my portable, the one I used during EuroTeX I could not connect to INTERNET anymore even after changing the connection parameters!! I then decide to un-install the firewall program I use (COMODO -- which I disabled when I tried to install the minimals, but with no result) and... everything is now OK: I could reconnect and more important install the minimals. Still a problem using TeXworks: the synctex system is not working: neither adding -synctex=1 in Preferences or \synctex=1 at the start of the tex source. Synctex appeared only in MikTeX 2.7 by a special (?) instruction in the pdftex (?) program. Is synctex taken into account in context? Alain

\setupquotation affecting \quote

Hi, I've been trying to use \setupquotation, but it seems it doesn't just affect \quotation, but also \quote. In particular, setting style to tfb enlarges the font used by \quote and somehow removes the quotes from around it. Seeing that there is also a \setupquote, and from looking at the code, I think this is not supposed to happen. This happens with MkII as well as MkIV, it seems. Hello, I am a new ConTeXt user recently switched from LaTeX (with small amounts of raw TeX macrosity) which I used for several years. I was searching the internet, this mailing list and finally the ConTeXt sources to find some information about achieving hanging indentation in captions. The 'hang' option for the 'caption' LaTeX package [1] was my inspiration (you can see an example on the 3 page of the linked manual). The only thing I could find was an old reply from Taco Hoekwater [2] but as he mentions this does not work well. After digging inside the source code of both ConTeXt and caption.sty I managed to hack the \putcompletecaption macro to do what I need. (see below) The changes required are minimal (capture the caption head into a box, remember its width and later set \hangindent and \hangafter while typessing the caption body) so maybe this could go into the main ConTeXt tree? hi folks, assuming x.pdf has more than 1 page, this only inserts the first. i'd like to insert all the pages. how would i do that? startTEXpage \externalfigure[x.pdf] \stopTEXpage \externalfigure[x.pdf][page=1-2] doesn't work either. I have to do; \startTEXpage \externalfigure[x.pdf][page=1] \stopTEXpage \startTEXpage \externalfigure[x.pdf][page=2] \stopTEXpage I'm using $ pdftex --version pdfTeX 3.1415926-1.40.9-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.7) and whatever comes with texlive 2008. regards, Mohamed

Hi all, Dashes in composed words do not hang when hanging punctuation is used. When a line break falls after `whisky' in this sentence: the repellent whisky|-|craving woman the dash doesn't hang. To make the dash hang I resort to this: the repellent whisky-\allowbreak craving woman Is there a better way? A related question: I want |<| and |>| to allow breaking on either side. \zerowidthspace---\zerowidthspace works when placed directly in the text, but not when used as the definition of `leftsentence' in the `setuplanguage' command. How do I change this behavour? Jeremy

Letter Module: Foldmarks

Hi, for some time now, I try to figure out, how to enable fold marks in the letter module. I tried: \setupletterstyle [option] [marking=on, foldmark=yes, cutmark=yes] All three of them didn't seem to do anything. How are fold marks supposed to be set? Scite + non-global environbment variables

Hello to everybody, I have just started with Context, having been working with LaTeX (i.e. MikTeX / TeXnicCenter under WIndows) for quite a while. I installed Contextminimal and Scite just as proposed as the easiest way to get started. As setting global environments variables would interfere with MikTeX, I switched off this option during the installation process (in the GUI Windows installation program). But now I cannot easily start the compilation by pressing Crtl+1 in Scite, bcause this just calls the compiler and the environment variables are of course not set for this process. So which file do I have to change to make Scite call the batch file which sets the environments variables before it calls the compiler? What global Context environment variables would possibly interfere with MikTeX? Greatings from Münster Wolfgang Hugemann

widow/orphan control on lists?

I am using context to generate some (mostly multiple choice) exams, which are nested lists. My problem is that I'm sometimes having the questions (the top-level list items) split from the answers (the secondary list items) across page boundaries. Is there some way to resolve this so that list items always remain with the parent? Bruce
