Suggestions on fonts and foundries

Some time back I recall seeing a message in which someone discussed using fonts available from foundries and recommended certain ones. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find that message. I will probably need one serif font for the text of the book, a plain sans serif font to use for entries in a table, a fancier sans serif font for chapter titles and, possibly a different not-too-plain sans serif font for page headers. Hi all, ppchtex is really nice. after experimenting with it i found some buglets: \starttext \setupchemical[axis=off,frame=on, option=test, size=medium, scale=medium, right=2000, left=3000, height=6000,textsize=medium]%textsize and option=test has no effect - why? \startchemical \chemical[SIX,SB135,DB246,SR6,Z,CRZ6][N,C,N,C,C,C,{\LC{\color[green]{NH}}}]%here color works \color[green]{\chemical[ADJ3,Five,SB235,DB4,Z345,SR3,CRZ3][N,C,H,H]}%color does not work here, manual says it should -why? \bottext{\offset[y=-\baselineskip]{Adenin}} \stopchemical \stoptext maybe someone can also explain how the OFF key works. the behaviour is strange in my opinion. i found nothing precise in the manual. onhttp://chneukirchen.org/blog/archive/2004/05/ppchtex.html i found following explanation: 18OFF1: do 18 small steps in direction 1 (right) but this don´t work - even with the example on the homepage. best regards Bernhard

[MkII] Difference in output in minimals versus TeX Live 2009

Hi, is minimals supposed to have the same output using MkII as TeX Live 2009? Or have I missunderstood what does it mean that 'MkII is frozen'? I ask because I get different results on same document. I'm using Palatino font. It seems related to spacing between letters in "il" and "ij" that is larger in current minimals. Any ideas why? -- Vedran Miletić

verbatim showing line number issue for mkiv

Dash broken in MKIV

Hi, in MKIV, the "long" dash (--) seems to be broken. Example: \starttext some -- text \stoptext Outputs with literal "--" instead of a longer "-" as it used to do before. It still worked ~2 weeks ago. I tested it with the minimals (beta) under Linux and Windows. Best Regards, Andreas Schneider.

MK-II to MK-IV

Hi, A couple of years ago, I decided to switch from LaTex to ConText. Now I have compiled a lot of documents (Physics syllabi's) which compiles fine in MK-II. I thought I would try to make a switch to MK-IV, mainly because I want to include 3D PRC figures in my documents. I made some test cases to test MK-IV in order to get a handle on the differences between MK-II and MK-IV Some of my observations are *) Numbered formulas, numbered by section, don't seem to work *) I am getting a lot of warnings of identifiers, apparently used more than once, which they are not LuaTeX warning (ext4): destination with the same identifier (name{km1_chapter1_sec1}) has been already used, duplicate ignored Question Are these observations correct, someone else can confirm them ? Question If so, is there a fix, patch, or change in ConText commands/options I am not aware of ? TIA

MkIV gray, no MkII black ?

Hi, in MkII I set \setupcolors[state=start] to activate defined colors (for text, numbers etc.), and \setupcolors[state=stop] to set these colors to black. Now, in MkIV \setupcolors[state=stop] does set these colors to gray. Not to black. [Log: "color : system gray is global activated"] What is the key to set either "color is color" or "color is black" again? Steffen

Presentation from document

Hullo, I was wondering the other day: since most people make "slides"/presentations basically by copy-pasting the chapter and subchapter titles into bulleted lists, would it be possible to make slides in ConTeXt by just loading a module in the original document and then when the PDF would be generated it would just take those titles and order them into a neat slide show? I know this is not how presentations should be made, but just sometimes such lazy person's slides would be a life saver. Macro with variable number of arguments

Hi all, I would like to write a macro which may have sometimes two, sometimes three arguments. The first and the last one are always present, but not necessarily the middle one. The unsatisfactory solution I have now is something like the example below: \define[2]\myMacroTwo{Name: #1\crlf Email: #2\crlf\thinrule\blank[small]} \define[3]\myMacroThree{Name: #1\crlf Address: #2 \crlf Email: #3\crlf\thinrule\blank[small]} \starttext \myMacroTwo{Hans}{hans(a)hagen.context.nl} \myMacroThree{Wolfgang}{Paradise of TeX, 2010}{wolfgang(a)schuster.context.de} \stoptext I think that (or rather I am certain…) in ConTeXt it is possible to define a unique macro called \myMacro which automatically tests the number of arguments: if there are only two of them the commands in \myMacroTwo are executed, while if three arguments are present, the commands in \myMacroThree are executed. Can anyone give a hint on this matter?

I tried an empty element <nbsp/> to be processed as follows: \startxmlsetups xml:nbsp ~ \stopxmlsetups which was ignored by context. (I'll need something similar with \discretionary as well, I guess.) METAPOST -- specifying an unknown point coordinate by giving the angle from another known point

This isn't specifically a ConTeXt question, but via it I've run into a seemingly simple problem in METAPOST that I just can't solve. I'm trying to draw a parallelogram by specifying: (1) the length of sides parallel to the x-axis; (2) the total height of the figure; (3) one of the interior angles. This is how I'm trying to solve it: ----------------- % Draw a parallelogram, like so: % % z3 z2 % +-----+ ^ % / / | % / / | % / / |10 units % /BL / | % +-----+ v % z0 z1 % <-----> % 5 units % % Interior angle BL = 87 degrees beginfig(1); z0 = origin; % bottom left z1 = (5,0); % bottom right y2 = y3 = 10; % shape is 10 units high x2 - x3 = x1 - x0; % top edge is the same length as bottom edge % We've completely specified z0 and z1; % We know that the top edge is the same length and angle as the bottom, but lies somewhere on y = 10; % all we have to do is specify one angle and we have a complete parallelogram. % % The following should work as it provides the following information: % the unit vector from z0 to z3 is at an angle 87 degrees anticlockwise from (0,0) -- (1,0). angle(z3-z0) = dir(87); endfig; end; -------------------- This doesn't work; using the angle() function gives the error: Not implemented: angle(unknown pair). Strictly speaking, yes, z3 has an unknown x-coordinate at that time in execution. But I am told that METAPOST is declarative, so I would expect my line of code to mean: "set the x-coordinate of z3 such that angle(z3-z0) = dir(87)". AFAICS that provides all the needed information to draw the shape. So, is there another way I can do what I want without falling into low-level trig? Best, James

Lua fonttester error

Hi Hans Hi all, since yesterday evening (Context 2010.02.25 19:46 MKIV) the Lua fonttester doesn't work anymore. After starting it with mtxrun --script server --auto (MAPS 39, page E75 :-) I can see the Startpage in my Browser. TeX syntax -- a guide?

Hi, After a few days working in "do what the tutorials say" mode, I now want to understand TeX from a programmer's mindset. I have not been able just by practise to work out what the syntactic rules of TeX are, and I am hoping that there is a sensible guide to this somewhere. However, searches for things like "tex syntax" draw a blank. Some of the things I want to understand, for example, are: (1) what is the distinction between square brackets and curly brackets after a command? (2) Why are there sometimes lists of square-bracketed lists after a command, each with lists of seeming arguments inside them? (2) What exactly are the "variables" in a TeX file? (I've seen variable-like things sometimes referred to just plainly, sometimes with preceding backslashes as if they were commands/macros). (4) Why can't I end a square-bracketed section with a final square-bracket on a line of its own, as I may do in other programming languages? (5) How are things like \subsection, \subsubsection, \subsubsubsection, ... implemented? I am used to languages in which there is only a finite set of commands; why is the logic here not more like \section[level=1], \section[level=2], ... ? (6) Perhaps I'm misunderstanding things and all this isn't actually the fundamental syntax of TeX but just adhoc syntax defined by various macros doing different things -- is this the case; to what degree can macros define syntax? Obviously I don't expect answers to all these here, but can someone point me to somewhere on the 'net that could answer them? The only other possibilities I can see are buying an expensive copy of the TeXbook, etc. Thanks all, James Fisher

alternate end glyphs in MKIV

Hi all, I want to get alternate end glyphs. Am I going about it correctly? I'm using the latext context minimals. Wolfgang, editable pdf fields are also good idea, but this will be just another form or current workflow, and I want another thing. I want to generate pdf with data already filled in, taken from a database. The form should be repeated as many times as there are rows in the database. I'm working on a project to set up exams, basing the work on Aditya's asignment class that was published in Practex in 2006. I have a problem getting title information printed correctly. I'm having trouble understanding why the attached file fails with: structure : subject @ level 3 : 0.0.0 -> Information ! I've had a separate issue where a URL containing %'s seems to gum up the system (that is, when I pared down the source to isolate the above peculiarity I removed the URLs with %s and the other error, which would stop compilation itself if the parantheses had solved the above issue, disappeared.) Is pandoc producing the proper, or preferred, \useURL syntax? I'm assuming pandoc aims for mkII over mkIV, but I thought I read that the interface had not changed. Sincerely, John Haltiwanger

file names

A while ago I posted a question about spaces etc. in file names in mkiv. Hans Hagen diligently remedied that point and now context typesets files with names like "a/b, c and d/x.tex" without complaining. I fear however, that there are places where that same code is not being used for opening files. One such place is the inclusion of externalfigures. Here a file "a/b, c and d/x.jpg" is not found. I would be very pleased if it becomes possible to have uniform behaviour in file names everywhere in context. So, if Hans is willing to have a look at it again....... Thanks in advance, of course. Hello, First of all, thanks to NTG for the proceedings book. I have a rather specific question. In my workplace, there are many forms in Word format: TITLE OF THE FORM A student ___________________________ (name, surname) was employed at ________________ (place) _______ (date) bla-bla bla-bla The fields represented here by underlines should be filled in. Typically, it should be done electronically for a number (say, a group) of students, and then printed out. Performing this task in Word was proven to be error-prone and tedious. What is the best way to handle such forms in ConTeXt? Maybe, some generic examples are already available? Obviously, data could be stored in simple relational database-like columns: Name, Place, Data. But what format to choose? XML, CVS, plain text? Regards, Vyatcheslav

Changing typeface for non-body text, using XeTeX -- how?

Hi all, I'm new to TeX, ConTeXt, and XeTeX. I'm progressing fine except for in one area: even though I'm told I'm using the best possible software for easy typeface use in TeX, I'm finding this area (i.e., fonts) confusing and badly documented. This is all the more surprising as what I want to do seems entirely bog-standard: set some basic brand identity by using a body typeface and heading typeface. There's the \setupbodyfont command for, obviously, the body font -- but I can't identify any equivalent command like "\setupheadingfont". I can see other commands for *ad hoc* use of other fonts, but I want to stick with as much semantic markup as possible and apply style elsewhere. Presumably this is possible! Could someone explain to me how to do this? Best wishes James Fisher (p.s. -- I'm coming from HTML+CSS-ish paradigms here, if that would help someone explain to me how I should reorganise my mind.)

ConTeXt minimal Win32 : kpathsea510.dll can not found !!!

Hi all, Just download http://minimals.contextgarden.net/setup/context-setup-mswin.zip and run first-setup.bat and I see the error about : texlua.exe looks for kpathsea510.dll but this file was not found in the distribution !!! I see only file kpathsearch510.dll so I make a copy of this and rename to kpathsea510.dll. Now texlua.exe goes without error. After installation, when I run "context --version" I see again the error about "texlua.exe can not found kpathsea510.dll". Hmmmmm I have to copy kpathsea510.dll (renamed early) into context\tex\texmf-mswin\bin\ folder to work. There is some things changed for librarie file name ? I'm working with Windows XP SP3 32bit. Hi, If I use multiple modes I need to use also \doifmode{}{}. Now it appears that it is nomore possible to have \start/stopbuffer inside the second pair of braces of \doifmode. This results in an error in MKIV and in no output in MKII Runaway argument? \bfc Text \stopbuffer \getbuffer [Test] \stoptext !
