Reading through the license of a commercial font I'm interested in, I see it stipulated for PDF files created that: "... a reader or user cannot create new content using one of our fonts in a PDF application ... the complete font is not embedded" And in an email correspondence with the vendor: "We just ask that you subset the font when exporting the PDFs ..." How to use local setups in selected components of a project only

Hi all, it has been suggested on this list before, that people should use modes instead of \localenvironment and friends. Unfortunately, I don't seem to get either of them working as expected. Consider the following example: % project.tex \startproject project \environment environ \component compa \component compb \stopproject % environ.tex \startenvironment environ % global setups % ... \startmode[compa] \setuphead[section][number=no] \stopmode \stopenvironment % localenv.tex \startlocalenvironment [compa] \setuphead[section][number=no] \stoplocalenvironment % compa.tex \startcomponent compa %\enablemode[compa] \project project \localenvironment localenv \section{First section} Some text %\disablemode[compa] \stopcomponent % compb.tex \startcomponent compb \project project \section{Second section} More text \stopcomponent Compiling project.tex results in both sections being unnumbered. Compiling just compb.tex yields the expected result. Apparently, the setups of localenv stay in effect for all components processed subsequently. Commenting out \localenvironment and uncommenting \enablemode / \disablemode in compa.tex, however, does not solve the problem either: When I compile just compa.tex, everything works as expected. Compiling preject.tex, however, results in all sections being numbered. Obviously, the call to \enablemode comes too late. What is the recommended approach to such a problem? Trouble with customising section heads

Hi again, sorry for bothering you so persistently, but I really did try to hard to find a solution -- and failed: In the attempt to customise my section headings by means of \setuphead[section][...command=] I followed the instructions at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Figures_in_Headings#Figures_in_Headings . For the purposes of testing, I've installed a current minimals distribution. As it turns out, neither MkII nor MkIV processes the attached example as expected: MkII The table of contents is incomplete, even though the wiki says it shouldn't be; MkIV \currentheadnumber seems to be 0 all the time. There is a possibility, of course, that something is wrong with my setup of ConTeXt. Hi all, for me (OS X 10.6.4) mtxrun –script server –auto do not work. Hi all, in an interface xml definition, what is the notation for an argument value that is a filename? I'm just unsure whether to specify it as “cd:text” or “cd:name”. Bib Module: \cite can kill spaces

simplefonts or Typecripts

Hello! I'd like to (finally) dive into ConTeXt (MkIV) using it for everything and stop using LyX/LaTeX...ConText is installed via context-minimals-git package on Archlinux (thank you Aditya). The 'Using fonts' section on wiki says: Handling fonts in LuaTeX can be done * in a simple but limited way, using the simplefonts module; * in the standard way, using TypeScripts and I've tried example with Delicious font (too bad there is no Croatian characters available) and it works. Considering I never learnt TypeScripts mechanism (and managed to forget most of ConteXr I knew when fiddling with it some years ago), I wonder if 'simplefonts' is THE way to go with fonts in MkIV and/or is there something one may miss by not using TypeScripts mechanism? Footnote numbers not following \setupinteraction color

I seem to be full of problems today: ----------------------- \setupcolors[state=start] \setupinteraction[state=start, color=black] \setupcolor[hex] \definecolor[titleRed][h=910A00] \starttext This \footnote{should not have a red color, correct?} \stoptext ----------------------- The footnote number in the page footer inherits color titleRed, though the footnote "notice" in the text is properly black. Also, this doesn't seem to affect links in my ToC (they aren't titleRed).

Simplefonts + Linux Libertine fails to do italics and bold

lettrine and setupalign cause Overfull \hbox errors

There appears to be some kind of clash between the lettrine module and setting up \setupalign[right] when used together: on a 200 page text every line has Overfull \hbox errors. As a (stupid?) side question: why is text, that aligns on the left edge of an odd-numbered page called "right" aligned? \startnarrower as \abstract in LaTeX and bottom "layer" as footnote without markers

Hi, I try to duplicate this [http://arxiv.org/abs/0901.1458] article to ConTeXt. The original article was written in LaTeX. I have to troubles in this "duplication": - abstract: I "emulate" LaTeX abstract environment with \startnarrower ... \stopnarrower, as this [http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Article_Abstracts] wiki page suggests. But I see that the space between lines is much bigger in ConTeXt than LaTeX and that if we put $n^2$ for example in abstract, ConTeXt displays too big, as a normal text, instead of LaTeX where all is \small sized. - for the other hand, I want to put a "layer" as a footnote without markers. In the original article it begins with "Date: ...". How can I achieve that? - Finally, I want to put my name and title alternatively in the headertexts, in odd and even pages. How can I do that? Footnote texts mistakenly appearing on page prior to call up

Hi there, the document attached below produces rather unexpected results. Even though footnote number 6 is called for on page 3, the associated footnote text appears on the previous page. Using location=page in the footnote setup restores the expected behaviour, but in this case the footnote text does not wrap at the end of the margin but is cut off instead. This cannot even be prevented by setting width=\rightmarginwidth in the footnote setup. Any ideas? \version[temporary] doesn't show registers

Interaction and TOC/content problmes

I am having a couple of small problems with the interaction. In principle it's working, but... 1. The TOC is added to the bookmarks, which is fine, but with a lower-case "c", ie. "content" 2. From http://wiki.contextgarden.net/PDF_Bookmarks_and_Headers I figured out how to get rid of the \crlf in the header. Actually, I'd be happy to just pass the word "Introduction" to the bookmarks and leave out the rest. Any way of doing that? 3. Strangely enough, placing \bookmark{Intro} after the \title {Introduction -- \crlf Welcome} replaces the "content" entry and points to the content, but putting a \bookmark after \completecontent leads to no output at all. Hi, I uploaded a beta with some bugfixes and new features = bookmarks: force forces subject into the bookmarks: \placebookmarks[chapter,section,subsection,subsubsection,subject][all][force=yes] dedicated optional configuration: \setupbookmarks[numberstarter=<,numberstopper=>] control over numbers: \setupbookmarks[number=no] % for any following \placebookmarks...[number=no] % for given entries you can give multiple \placebookmarks commands as they accumulate = sectioning \placelist[chapter][criterium=text,interaction=all] with \setuphead[chapter][interaction=list] you also get backlinks = pdf/x Peter and I sorted out some issues and believe that we now have a reasonable interface. Examples are in pdf-x*.mkiv in the distribution. \setupbackend [format=valid pdf/x name, profile=name.icc, intent=name.icc, level=compresslevel, % default 3 file=optional specification file, option=always|never] (I'll make a --directives=backend.showformats one of these days.) Hi Hans, Hi all, my fresh ConTeXt minimal installation (winxp) doesn`t recognize the fonts in the context tree. I can only use the windows systemfonts. mtxrun --script fonts --reload says: ... Placing footnotes in right margin en bloc at bottom of page

Hi there, not being a ConTeXt user myself, I have been advised on the tex-d-l list of the German TUG that a certain problem could possibly be solved more easily in ConTeXt than in LaTeX. So, here is what I'm trying to achieve: The numerous but short footnotes of a document shall be placed in the right margin rather than below the main text area. Additionally, though, the footnotes should not be placed near the call up (similar to what \marginpar does), but type set en bloc at the bottom of the page. In other words, the main text area should have fixed margins all round across all pages and the footnotes should be printed in a small rectangular block beside the main text area such that the height of this block varies according to the number of footnotes on the page, but the block is always flushed to the bottom of the page. You'll find an ascii art illustration below. Is such a layout feasible in ConTeXt without too much hassle at all? But it is same before.(After click "restart", I have a blank window and nothing happens when I click "here" again.) If it works in your machine, that is the problem of my macbook. Hey all, a very simple problem, really, but one I'm having trouble finding examples for. I would like to set up my titles to begin in the margin, rather than at the text edge, similar to what is found in Bringhurst's _Elements of Typographic Style_. 2 sets of footnotes?

Hi all, I'm trying to do a (re-)layout for an older book which holds a few challenges for me. Hopefully I can find some help here. In this book I need to track 2 kinds of footnotes, sidenotes and the original page numbering (I don't replicate the old text flow but put comments where pages originally change). My footnotes follow the current layout/flow, not the original layout. My prime issue are having 2 sets of footnotes. One set of numbering (numbered 1,2,3...) is reset every section, which I figured out(\setupfootnotes [way=section]). A second set results out of comments the original Author placed into the margins. They are counted a, b, c... and are reset every page. Both are placed at the bottom of the relevant page. A set of sidenotes in the form "R nnn" is used from 1 to the end of the book to indicate the pages and positions where these sidenotes where placed. Currently I am not linking the second set of footnotes i.e. the author notes and the sidenote counter. Though it might be a nice luxury to generate a list of all author notes. I looked at lists and I suppose footnotes use the list mechanism in the background. But I don't get anywhere with that. Trying to keep track of the author notes, the placing with \placelist[AuthorComment] doesn't seem to work in the example below. Besides, I don't see how they would appear or be placed as footnotes. In short: How do I get 2 sets of footnotes: one per section, one per page? Extensive (sorry) example below. Dear Hans, Thank you for a nice solution. It is really cool! I always wonder what is the limit of ConTeXt. But I think that I am using very small portion of it. Here I'd like to ask one more thing. I downloaded the example of "Euro symbol" animation. Both button "here" and "restart" worked fine. However, a new pdf file of Euro symbol animation which was madden by recompiling the source not properly working in my macbook. "here" button works fine while "restart" lost the position.(just blank window is appeared) I tried a similar step by step drawing and got the same situation. Is it a problem in my machine only? There's a plain TeX package (bussproofs.sty from CTAN; I realize that the file ends with ".sty" but it's intended to work in plain TeX) that I'm trying to get working with ConTeXt. I'm stuck at one point though: the package has the statements \def\newcount{\alloc@0\count\countdef\insc@unt} \def\newdimen{\alloc@1\dimen\dimendef\insc@unt} \def\newskip{\alloc@2\skip\skipdef\insc@unt} \def\newbox{\alloc@4\box\chardef\insc@unt} ConTeXt complains because it doesn't know what alloc@0, etc., are. Any advice for how to import this functionality from plain.tex into ConTeXt? thanks, Jesse

Some Experiences

Hi all, I do a lot of LaTeX writing as my stuff is very math intensive, but I have a lot of interest in ConTeXt as I would like my books to look better. Anyway, I try on and off to get ConTeXt running so I can experiment. I just spent a pleasurable day playing. Here is what I found. It was pretty easy to install the newest minimals. I just followed the instructions and installed it in a local place separate from my texlive2009 installation. I spent a lot of time with a direct update of ConTeXt into my texlive2009 folder (yes, I know I was doomed but I was on a roll). I found the usual errors running either luatools --generate or mtxrun --generate and also context --make All the files needed to make this work are actually installed, but the problem is the way luatools finds stuff and caches it. Something is wrong there. The files that are in the folder can't be located. Also, with my local minimals installed and trying to add ConTeXt to my texlive2009, luatools seemed to find the ConTeXt stuff from both minimals and texlive2009. That was not good, but temporarily removing the minimals did not change the bad results, still I have no idea how to get luatools to ignore the minimals folder when it is setting up the cache. Finally, this all started because I am tired of my bad chemical drawings in my books and wanted to use the package m-ch-en in LaTeX. The original context supplied with texlive2009 wouldn't let me compile a m-ch-en source so since I am still heavily using LaTeX, I wanted to update luatex, context etc to see if I could get it to work. I still can't use context from texlive2009, but with my updates I can compile m-ch-en source. So at least a small win. The ConTeXt stuff is fascinating and I am moving towards it, but I need to do it in baby steps and I need to do it with a concomittant LaTeX installation. So I will eagerly await any sort of a fix for a LaTeX/ConTeXt combined world while I continue to learn and move away for LaTeX. As a long time user of LaTeX, I know its limitations very well and ConTeXt will allow me to do more interesting things. Keep up the good work. abbreviations as macros

Hi Hans: This is asking Armin Varmaz' question in a different way, although I know even less. I would like to define a macro that is just an abbreviation. For example, say I want to define a snippet \NPV which provides the text NPV$_0$, and NPV is in textfont while 0 is in mathfont. This should work everywhere---formulas, subscripts, footnotes, etc., and automatically appear in the correct sizing. In LaTeX, this is easy to do: \newcommand{\NPV}{\text{NPV\ensuremath{_0}}} I can now use \NPV\ in formulas, footnotes, subscripts, titles, etc., and it is properly sized everywhere. Is there a recommended way to do this on conTeXt? regards, /iaw
