Hi friends, I am a bit confused with the use of citation/bibliographies in MkIV. Maybe someone can help me? Say, I have a bib-file containing entries like ... @BOOK{mb:Wassermann1990, title = {Alternativkommentar zum Strafgesetzbuch}, year = {1990 (Bd. 1), 1986 (Bd. 3)}, editor = {Wassermann, Rudolph}, % address = {Neuwied}, howcited = {\emph{Bearbeiter}, in: Wassermann, AK-StGB}, juratitle = {AK-StGB}, owner = {mascha}, timestamp = {2006.10.02} } In the typeset document I need an entry like this: \emph{Amelung} in Wassermann, Alternativkommentar zum Strafgesetzbuch, §\,94, Rn. 4. In a Latex document I saw the usage like this: \cite[Amelung][§\,94, Rn. 4]{mb:Wassermann1990} Who do I do it in ConTeXt MkIV?? Any help very welcome!! Thank you, Steffen

Skew not working in latest beta

Problem typing file with diacritics by \typefile

Hello, I have problem. Suppose having t-TypeF.ctx which is to print itself: --- \enableregime[cp1250] \starttext ABC ŽŠČ \typefile[]{t-TypeF.ctx} \stoptext --- The letters "ŽŠČ" to be printed during \typefile are the problem. I get a long error message, where the key message is: l.9 \typefile[]{t-TypeF.ctx} ! String contains an invalid utf-8 sequence. system > error on line 73 in file t-TypeF.ctx: String contains an invalid utf-8 sequence ... l.73 ´┐Ż The file is created with CP 1250 = Windows, Eastern Europe, Czech Republic. So how do I make ctx accept also Czech letters with diacritics like "ŽŠČ"? - I also looked to wiki to \setuptyping, but it doesn't seem to there would be a command which could change this. Hans & Taco, A tiny request: is there any chance to make the mptopdf script point to "--script mptopdf" instead of "--script base"? Hi! I'm back again with my question. I really want to get Unicode 'Quarter Note' symbol, either from standard or custom font. The following example does not work, while the font (Symbola) is found. Interaction messing with footnote positioning

Replacing a piece of a paper

Hello, I'm trying to handle a special problem. I guess ConTeXt would be useful for this purpose, although its primary function is to typeset. But - I have many drawings - they are black-and-white one-sided PDFs of A1 or A2 size (typical technical drawings). The bottom right area of size 210 x 330 mm should be "deleted" - or over-painted by a white rectangle (or picture or MP code). And next a new PDF of A4 size should be placed on the right bottom area, just on the white ("deleting") area. I wouldn't have problem with batch processing the number of files. But I would need an example how to take the original A2 PDF, place a whitening area on it and then to place a new PDF over it; I'm not experienced enough in "layering" with ConTeXt and I guess this may be the way. Would it be possible to provide a small example of such processing an arbitrary file? I can send a sample A2 or A1 PDF, and also a replacing A4, if necessary. Thank you in advance. Which table environment?

Hello all, I've been playing with the various table environments but I thought I'd seek advice as to which would be the best for my requirements. I need to be able to do the following: - Repeating header row with coloured background and text (I can get this working with TABLE but not tabulate). - Multi-page tables (TABLE and tabulate are fine with these). - Insert images in a cell (TABLE seems to handle this better than tabulate). - Have rows that will split across pages - we will have large pieces of text and images which will end up being taller than the page. (tabulates paragraph support is the right sort of thing) - Start next row on current page. - Include other tables, lists etc in a cell (this is a "nice to have" rather than a "must have") The reason I need these various things is because Word acts this way and I need to produce something similar (until we can argue for a format change). At the moment I'm leaning towards tabulate but I'm having issues with images and the headers. I'm using Mk IV (bonus question: as a newbie, should I just start with IV and ignore II? Or is II better for any particular reason?). Thanks in advance, Felix

Hi, are the delimiters \lgroup and \rgroup supported in MkIV? This \starttext $$\bigg\lgroup\dots\bigg\rgroup$$ \stoptext is ok in MkII (ConTeXt ver: 2011.01.06) but when compiled with MkIV (ConTeXt ver: 2010.07.30 11:35 and ver: 2010.07.30 11:35) the delimiters are not shown. (By the way, the same holds true for \rmoustache and \lmoustache.) Am I missing something? Searching the list archive and the contextgarden unfortunately didn't bring up in anything. Problem with Encoding math symbols

Hi, I have xml containing following mathml. The Ω is symbol replaced with * Ω* in the xml. But when i run the tex file. The pdf is not rendered with Ω symbol. I have enclosed my xml and tex files. Hi, I uploaded a new beta: The character definitions have been updated (esp math, thanks to Aditya). After some testing by Wolfgang the decision was made to permit _ in macronames in modules. So, the following works: \unprotect \def\test_test_test#1#2{#1+#2=whatever} \test_test_test{1}{2} \protect In principle we can also support ^. The mkiv code base no longer uses _ and ^ in math in modules and those who write modules should avoid them as well. So, when writing macros in unprotected mode, one schould use: $x\normalsuperscript2\normalsubscript n$ Taco and I think that we can safely switch to \nonknuthmode in mkiv so this might happen soon (which means that _ and ^ become normal characters in text mode). Actually, being permanently in \nonknuthmode would permit _ and ^ in modules again. We could even make _ and ^ always letters outside math in which case \text_test etc would become possible everywhere but that needs some more consideration. In that case \def\make_subscript#1#2{\mathematics{#1_{#2}}} \make_subscript{x}{2} becomes valid everywhere. We can discuss this in detail at the dev list. Unreadable characters in embedded PDF file

Hello all, Often I include external PDF files into PDF document generated by ConTeXt. When I create a PDF document containing text in Scribus (or other application) and then I put it to my PDF file (generating by ConTeXt), then in final PDF document are unreadable characters. Is there a problem in Scribus character encoding or the fact that the fonts contained in the included PDF file ConTeXt unknown? Thanks for the advice. Jaroslav

handling key=value sets with lua

hi list, skip to the many %%% if you just want to help me ;) i need to make a macro which consists of ten optional arguments. it wouldn’t be too ugly to require to write the following to use it, since it outputs a 3×3 matrix with an adjacent tenth item, but tex can’t handle ten arguments afaik. syntax idea: empty: \bigcrafting% {}{}{}% {}{}{}{}% {}{}{}% partly filled: \bigcrafting% {}{}{}% {planks}{planks}{}{workbench}% {planks}{planks}{}% how it should look: [image: CraftingWorkbenchIO.png] ok, since using empty “required” arguments aren’t elegent, either, i wanted to get into key=value sets, but ran into the next problem: i wanted to instead define bigcrafting to work like this: \bigcrafting [21=planks, 22=planks, 31=planks, 32=planks] [workbench] but \getparameters<http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Commands_with_KeyVal_arguments>can’t handle numerical values. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% and while points of the compass like NE, S and C (for center) would work, it sprang to my mind that a parser written in lua, whitch uses lua’s internal hashtables would meet my furter needs better (like looping over the matrix and testing if parameters are set) can somebody tell my how to access (and test if they exist) the arguments (#1,[#2],…) of a command definition in lua?

External figures in section headings

Hello all, I need to have an image as part of my section headings. I've been able to add extra details to the setuphead; these are repeated but the picture is not. Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong? I get the same behaviour whether I use version II or IV. Passing and retrieveing a variable

Hello, I'd need to pass a variable to Ctx and to retrieve it inside a compiled document - via Ctx itself and also by Lua. Something like modes; but modes allow just to check whether they are on or off. I'd need something like this: Calling context.exe: --- call context.exe test.mkiv --mode:MyMode --variable MyVariable=AAA --- And test.mkiv: --- \starttext Hello \doifmode{MyMode}{Being in MyMode} \ifvariableequal{MyVariable}{AAA}{MyVariable is \MyVariable} % Something like this \startluacode if context.variables.MyVariable == "AAA" then context("MyVariable is defined.") -- Something like this end \stopluacode \stoptext --- Simply said, I'd need to provide a conditional (or: dependent) compilation of the input file. Hi, How to invoke pre-defined Unicode symbols? E.g., in "symb-uni.tex" I see \startsymbolset[Unicode Musical] % 0x2600: Requires UnicodeRegular26 \definesymbol[QuarterNote][\USymbChar{38}{105}] % QUARTER NOTE \definesymbol[EighthNote][\USymbChar{38}{106}] % EIGHTH NOTE ... \symbol[QuarterNote] gives me words "QuarterNote", and \QuarterNote is an invalid sequence. Dear ConTeXt developpers, While trying to use mkiv, I noticed that the output of the "\div" macro in math mode is not the division symbol as I was expecting but the "div" text. Including xfig graphics

Hi there, I'm pretty new to ConTeXt and stumbled upon a problem when trying to use Xfig: I'm trying to create figures with xfig and including them in my ConTeXt document. I would export them as PDF, but unfortunately I have TeX math inside the figure and I'd like to have native fonts. I used to use a combinded LaTeX/PDF export in the past with LaTeX. What has happened to externalfigure command?

Hi, I'm struggling to get an older ConTeXt file that worked well under TeXLive 2008, but not any more with ConTeXt minimals! I've installed the ConTeXt minimals (Mark IV!) (MTXrun | current version: 2010.07.30 11:35) recently. I've a file someplot.1 in a directory called /home/somewhere. The ConTeXt source file contains the command: \setupexternalfigures [directory={/home/somewhere}] in the preamble. The image file is called using: \leftaligned{\externalfigure[someplot.1][scale=100]} But no image is presented in the generated pdf-file! However, all jpg-type of images that I use in the document - using similar commands - are all rendered correctly! What's wrong? Anybody any idea? Regards, Gerard Verhaag

How to get numbered cases'ed equations ?

Hi list, How can I get a numbered equation when using cases in MkIV? The "hack" proposed by Aditya in [1] doesn't work as it uses macros that no longer exist (\makesesctionnumber and others). The reference doesn't even get recorded. I precise that I don't want (well, don't need) the sub numbering per-line, just a regular number would do. xml-processing: missing or ungrouped '='

Hi all a problem with processing XML data (maybe a lack of knowledge). If in the example below I set the chapter-attributes directly in \startxmlsetups xml:title (commented out) everything is like I expected. Because I have headings to be treated equally in multiple hierarchies I tried to delegate the processing to splitHeader. But then the processing always complains about a missing or ungrouped '=' in line ... still struggling with footnotes

kerning info (mkiv)

Hi, for a text background graphic I need the character box sizes of a given string. I managed to collect the needed info (width, height, depth, kerns), but there is still some flaw in the kerning part. For example: "VATo" is printed out (in the shell) as V 12 11 0 *kerning -85721.088 A 10 11 0 *kerning -64487.424 T 10 11 0 *kerning -64487.424 o 7 7 0 The character stands in the first column, followed by width, height and depth (in pixel). The "*kerning" line shows the kerning value (in sp) of the neighbouring character pair. No problem here. MPtoPDF problem

Hallo. Few days ago I migrated to Ubuntu 10.10 (Linux) and last stable ConTeXt minimals (2010.07.30 11:35 MKII) (from very old ConTeXt version). Now I found I can't run mptopdf: Command mptopdf chart.1 just prints chart.1 and an empty line Command mtxrun --script mptopdf chart.1 fails with these complaints: This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.11 (TeX Live 2010) \write18 enabled. entering extended mode [MP to PDF] (./charts08.1{/home/qasar/programy/context_stable/tex/texmf/fonts/m ap/pdftex/plain/pdftex.map}) [1] !pdfTeX error: pdftex (file lmmi9): Font lmmi9 at 600 not found ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! MPtoPDF 1.4.0 : error while processing tex file And command mtxrun --script mptopdf chart.mp starts to compile something, than reports that it cannot write the log file and asks for another file name, and eventually fails with the same complaints as above. Determining available fonts

\showbodyfont & \showbodyfontenvironment display details about a single font. Which command lists or otherwise identifies fonts available for use on a Tex Live MKII system? I want to find out what fonts have been loaded onto my system. These would most likely be the standard fonts included with the on-line download.
