Hi, I have a basic problem with the very first step of using bibliographies in ConTeXt: converting BBI to BBL files. And, as far as I have understood, the only thing that ".bst" files do is sorting. This means that a plain run of bibtex like this ... \setupbibtex[database=mytry_x.bib] \starttext Test \completepublications \stoptext ... should convert the entire database (eg. from a ".bib" file) in TeX-parsable records, written in a ".bbl" file. If I want to shorten many authors to just one followed by "et al." there is the otion "authoretallimit" that specifies the number needed to trigger 'et al.' handling. This can be set *later* in setuppublicationlist. But when I run the minimal exmaple above against this database "mytry_x.bib": @BOOK{daunerliebkonzenschmidt, author = {Peter Schlechtriem and Horst Konzen}, } @BOOK{schlechtriemschmidtkessel, author = {Peter Schlechtriem and Horst Konzen and Karsten Schmidt}, } ... the resulting bbl lookes like this: \setuppublicationlist[samplesize={SKS},totalnumber=2] \startpublication[k=daunerliebkonzenschmidt,t=book, a={{Schlechtriem},{Konzen}},y=, n=1,s=SK] \author[]{Peter}[P.]{}{Schlechtriem} \author[]{Horst}[H.]{}{Konzen} \stoppublication \startpublication[k=schlechtriemschmidtkessel,t=book, a={{Schlechtriem},{}},y=, n=2,s=SKS] \author[]{Peter}[P.]{}{Schlechtriem} \author[]{Horst}[H.]{}{Konzen} \author[]{Karsten}[K.]{}{Schmidt} \stoppublication So the three authors *are* already shortened to "a={{Schlechtriem},{}}" only! Hi again, Some more important news follows. Please read carefully, especially the section about the early bird registration change. == Location change (again) == After further inquiries, it turned out that the proposed venue at Charneux did not have any internet access at all. Predicting that this would be somewhat of an inconvenience, I decided to move the location yet again. This location change is not very important except to people coming in by car: we will still be in the same part of Belgium, but now a little bit to the north of Liège, instead of to the east. The new location is a small romantic château in Bassenge-Boirs: http://www.sjetootje.nl/ The meeting website is updated as well, of course. == Early bird registration change == Mojca pointed out by email that it was now impossible to register as early bird for people that could not / would not attend Southern France, but would be interested in coming to Belgium. This would be a little unfair, so we came up with a new early bird solution: Anyone will be eligible for early bird reduction that manages to have the appropriate amount transfered to my bank account on July 31, 2011. Anyone paying after that day has to pay the full amount. As we are talking about reception date here and international transfers can take a few days, this means that international transfers should be started no later than July 25, 2011. *Please note* that this now also works the other way around: unless you manage the payment in time, you will not be eligible for the early bird discount. Optimal way to defining of macros in Luacode in ConTeXt

Hello ConTeXist. How best (optimally) in Lua code in ConTeXt define own ConTeXt macros? I was used recently LuaTeX syntax (for example) : tex.sprint(tex.ctxcatcodes,'\\def\\mymacro\{arg of mymacro\}') But someone advised me that I use the better syntax: context('\\def\\Mymacro\{arg of mymacro\}') or context("\\def\\test#1{#1}") etc... Exist other (best or most optimal) way to do? for example something like: context.def.mymacro("first arg", "sec arg:") (which of course does not work ...) Export problems

Hi, I played a little with the export feature. It's really fun. So far I've two questions/problems. 1. \setupbackend[export=yes,xhtml=yes,css=yes] \starttext before \quotation{test \quote{test}} after \stoptext exports to: before “test ‘test’ ” after -----------------------------^ (space between ’ and ”) But sometimes there is no space between the closing quote symbol and the following word. (I‘m trying to make an example). 2. Is there a possibility to “ignore” content the other way round? Something like: \startmode[export] … \stopmode Concrete it‘s problematic to export texts with onum- and pnum-features enabled. Greeting Andreas

A question about layers

OK, after a pm from Mojca concerning my previous question I decided to look into the "layers" mechanism. It won't work for me - just nothing shows up. What am I doing wrong? Here's a minimal example: \starttext \definelayer[title][x=105mm,y=20mm] \setlayer[title]{This is the title.} \stoptext (I'd also like to be able to "anchor" the title so that (105mm,20mm) are the coordinates of the center, not the lower-left corner etc. How to do that?) Dear ConTeXt-ers, I'm trying to remember why we are shipping dvipdfmx in ConTeXt: was it because of Aleph or because of Eastern scripts? I'm not sure if it is still used or not. I know that it is pretty important in eastern scripts and as a basis for xdvipdfmx, but I don't know to what extent ConTeXt supports it and to what extent ConTeXt users are using it if at all. I would only like to know the situation. If people use it, it is no problem to keep it, but I would at least like to have a rough idea of its usefulness and usage in ConTeXt. (The dvips program will probably also be removed; I suspect that it doesn't work at the moment anyway.) Mojca

How to prepare a template for list of names in ConTeXt

Hi all, I have an ambitious plan to start (again) to use ConTeXt (MkIV, of course;)), so that I can learn it a bit; also, I'd like to play around with metapost/metafun (after a long break - I'm a metapost to tikz convert;)). I want to prepare a template for a list of names, looking like this (in ascii art;)): List of names Class ________ Date ____ A-F M-R ____ ____ ____ ____ G-L S-Z ____ ____ ____ ____ (Of course, there will be more horizontal lines). In other words, I'd like to have two columns (and a title spanning them) and a lot of places to put down a name. I'd like each horizontal line to have a little "hook" and one of the ends, i.e., a quarter of a circle. I'd like to have full control over the positioning (margins, width of the intercolumn space, height of each place for a name etc.). I'd like the labels like A-F to be also "underlined" by similar "hooked lines". How do you think I should do it? More specifically: 1. How can I do something like "metapost macro" putting a "left or right hooked horizontal line, of given length/width/color, at a specific place"? 2. How can I instruct ConTeXt to put things where I want them? In plain TeX or LaTeX, I'd use a bunch of boxes, vskips etc; what is the "ConTeXt way"? Thanks in advance! -- Marcin Borkowski

\date bug with french

Hi, The date printed with the \date command is not correct in french (but ok in english). See this example : \mainlanguage[fr] \starttext \date \stoptext It prints "44 juillet 2011" (today). Without " \mainlanguage[fr]", it’s prints "July 4, 2011" (as expected). I have "ConTeXt - 2011.06.29 09:57" and "LuaTeX-0.70.1". cont-sys.mkiv in texlive 2011

Hi, I have installed tl-2011 a few days ago. Context mkiv runs ok. But to configure page size I put a few commands in cont-sys.mkiv under home:.texlive2011/tex-config which is the result of mtxrun --expand-path TEXMFCONFIG. However, the file has no effect on context and nor is it found by mtxrun cont-sys.mkiv. TEXMF is found as: home:.texlive2011/texmf-config:home:texmf: !!selfautoparent:texmf-config:!!selfautoparent:texmf-project: !!selfautoparent:texmf-fonts:!!/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local: !!selfautoparent:texmf-dist:!!selfautoparent:linux-64:!!selfautoparent:texmf (one line) What do I miss? Precise Destination of References

I have links to different parts of my document using \goto. I would like to know if there is some way to increase the precision of the links' destination. When I click them, they navigate to the correct page, but not the correct part of the page. Also, I've opened the document in several different pdf viewers, and, whenever I click a link, the document re-sizes itself. Is there a way to prevent this?

Hi, did something happend to the \fullstructureheadnumber in the last six months? I still can find it in the source (strc-sec.mkiv) but is always halts with "Undefined control sequence". Is there a new command for this? Thanks P.

Editable PDF-document

I am creating a PDF document with ConTeXt. This document should also be editable by the client itself. Two persons in the company I am working for tried to add annotations for me. One was using Infix. When trying to edit the document, he auto magically was transferred to a place in the document 30 or 40 pages further. Someone else worked with NitroPDF. He managed (as far as I know without problems) to give 38 annotations, but the size of the document increased from 5.4 MB to 102 MB. This looks not workable. Is there a way I can change the generated PDF so that the client will be able to edit the PDF when he gets it, or could I better generate HTML? -- Cecil Westerhof

'Rainbow' header/footer

I am using ConTeXt to make documentation for a webbased application. (100+ document) Last week they showed me another document with used a kind of rainbow (but completely filled at the upper part) for the page header and a 180 degrees rotated one with different colors for the page footer. Now they want me to do the same. What is the best way to do this? -- Cecil Westerhof

And now we can refer to formula \in[formulalabel] (in). \stoptext --- 8< --- minimal example --- >8 --- `\ref` does not seem to find the label for the equation. `\in` does work. ConTeXt minimals, TL Contrib & Mac support (ppc, <=10.5)

Dear Mac lovers, After yesterday's system failure on my computer I installed the new OS which means that I'm no longer able to compile binaries for Leopard and PPC. (My computer failure wasn't planned, but it has been known for a long time that we will have problems supporting those OS-es and architectures.) For some time Richard Koch will try to take over the compilation, but the future of support for PPC and/or Tiger & Leopard users cannot be taken for granted. At the moment ConTeXt minimals still support Tiger. TeX Live only supports Leopard. This is just a preliminary note. We don't plan to switch off the support tomorrow, but if there will still be users wanting to use older operating systems when Dick upgrades all of his machines, we will have to find other people willing to help with regular compilations or we will simply cease to support those OS-es and processors. Cambria: integral sign has wrong size

Hello everybody! I tried doing some math typesetting with Cambria, but somehow the integral sign comes out somewhat smaller than it should be. Running the following in the latest beta produces the attached pdf. Does anybody have an idea about what's going wrong here, or how to fix it? Hi all, == Location change == Let's do the most important news first: The 5th ConTeXt meeting has been relocated to Belgium (due to other obligations by Arthur, southern France turned out to be near impossible to get organised). The new location is Charneux, Belgium, geographically in the middle of the triangle created by Maastricht (NL), Aachen (DE), and Liège (BE). We will (as always) pick up people from various important public transport spots during the Monday afternoon & evening, and try our best to do timely drop-offs on Saturday as well. == Registration / Bursaries == Perhaps it is the fine weather that makes people hold off, perhaps it is because of Southern France sounding more attractive and the end of summer, or maybe we simply have not sent enough reminder emails to the list yet, but it is noticeable that the number of registrations is a little less than usual around this time in the process. If you are planning to attend, please register soon. Around August 20, the caterer has to be informed on the number of people that need food, so if you register any later than that you may run the risk of having to eat scraps ;) Joking aside, it goes without saying that we look forward to seeing as many ConTeXt users as possible! On a related note: we have received limited but firm commitments for bursary funds from various LUGs, so even if you cannot afford the new (reduced) fees, it may still be possible for you to attend. Just drop us a message explaining how much funding you would need to be able to attend and why we should give it to you, and we will see what can is possible. == Fee changes == With the location, also the fees have changed. What used to be the 'early bird' rate is now the 'normal' rate. Consequently, the normal rate is now a lot lower than it initially was: down to 370 EUR. Early bird registrations are now closed, but a discount of 100 EUR will be retroactively applied for people that have already registered until now. There is now a fixed fee for accompanying persons of 300 EUR (includes lodging and all meals, but no conference materials). It is also possible to extend your stay until Monday morning 26/9, for an extra fee of 30 EUR per day (but you will have to scavenge your own food). Finally, and perhaps most surprisingly, it is now actually possible to pay! Details are on the http://meeting.contextgarden.net/ website, on the 'fee' page. As your new main organiser and recipient of these funds, Taco urges you to pay up sooner rather than later. If you cannot find out how much you are due, just send a message asking for clarification. == Registration changes == Besides a few changes resulting from the change in venue and consequently the fees, there is also a new field for Passport/ID Number (which is required for some tax thing). Intersection of Header and Leftmargindistance

I have a background for my header that is supposed to extend over the entire width of the page (leftedge to rightedge). The background is interrupted in the area where the header intersects the space between text and left margin. There is no option to include leftmargindistance in \setupbackgrounds. Bug, workarounds? I find the following strange in columns. In the second \startcolumns\stopcolumns one would expect that the short text fragment in the column to the right, is placed in the wide open space on the first page. But in contrast, it is set to the left on a next page. Quite unnecessary, because in the column to the right there is enough space. Is it normal that after \setupcolumns[balance=no] the dividing line is not fully drawn in the case where the column at the left is shorter than the one to the right. And furthermore that balance=no inserts a pagebreak, whereas balance=yes does not? Below a minimal example. textrule customization

The \texrule is typeset as: --- _TEXT_ ----------------------------- this I would like to change to: ----------------------------- _TEXT_ --- \setuptextrules has location=left|inmargin but regrettably not location=right or location=middle (or center) (neither in the wiki nor by experiment). Isn't that easily implemented? If so, it would be appreciated. As an aside, setting up the thickness of the line seems desirable to, especially in view of the fact that other aspects as the color are already customizable. Hans van der Meer

Space between item symbol and item text

Dear all, how do I decrease the horizontal whitespace between the symbol and the text in an item[ize] list? The manual suggests this: \startitemize[1*serried] \item Test \stopitemize It's not working, I get the same distance as with no option at all . Test But I wanted . Test In fact, the option <<n>>*serried does not have any effect, whereas <<n>>*broad is working properly. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Trying to get figure frame corners to clip figure

Hey list, I'd like the rounded corners of my figure's frame to clip off the outside corners of the image so they aren't sticking out. itemize textstyle

Hi all, is it possible to assign different styles to each itemgroup or level of 'itemization'? It is possible when using \head to assign a headstyle, but wouldn't it be nice to assign a certain textstyle to an item level? Consider something heavily customized (but still useful IMHO) like this: 1. First Level (bold, small caps) - Second level (normal) > third level (italic) * fourth level (smaller font [\tfx], text color dark gray) I somehow can't find a way to achieve this, without applying the style in the actual list. I also do not know what these before and after keys do, but I assume they control more the surroundings than being a command that is insterted "before" and "after" the item text. Best Regards!

Text Background in Columnset

I have two columns on one page of my document. The text background from the first column is being continued into the second column even though I'm using \stoptextbackground before switching to the second column: \definecolumnset[first][n=2] \setupcolumnset[first][1][width=.65\makeupwidth] \setupcolumnset[first][2][width=.35\makeupwidth] \definecolor[introbackground][r=.92, g=.94, b=.84] \setupcolors[state=start] \definetextbackground[intro] [location=paragraph,frame=no,backgroundcolor=introbackground] \starttext \startcolumnset[first] \starttextbackground[intro] \input knuth \stoptextbackground \column blah blah blah more text \stopcolumnset \stoptext I also tried adding background=someColor to one of the \setupcolumnset declarations, but there was no background at all. Is there a better way to get backgrounds into columns or am I just missing something?

How to install extra module in the latest context?

I update my context today, but it seems that the third part module did not installed. I use the command sh ./first-setup.sh --extras=all to update the context and when I compile the file I write before, it says the module vim and simplefonts did not found. Is there any error during my update ? How can I fix it ? Thanks

modules in minimals (important)

Hello, Hans has changed the command line parameter for modules (--modules=vim should work now). The problem is that he now stores the chosen modules to a variable "modules" as opposed to "extras". So if you want to keep your modules, please edit status-of-update.lua and replace ["extras"] with ["modules"]. Or simply install the modules again. There is also a switch --fonts= which installs some additional fonts from http://minimals.contextgarden.net/current/fonts/extra/ Mojca

Continuous chapter numbering without prefixes in documents with parts

Does anybody know how to implement a continuous numbering of chapters in documents with several parts? More specifically: how can I achieve the following numbering scheme (with unprefixed chapter numbers): I First part 1 Chapter one 2 Chapter two II Second part 3 Chapter three I tried (unsuccessfully) the following: \setuphead[part][placehead=yes] \starttext \part{First part} \chapter{Chapter one} \chapter{Chapter two} \part{Second part} \chapter{Chapter three} \stoptext The here result is something like: First part 1.1 Chapter one 1.2 Chapter two Second part 2.1 Chapter three I tried to get rid of the chapter prefixes by putting \setuphead[chapter][prefix=no] but that had no effect whatsoever. Dear list, I would like to use ConTeXt (MKIV) for typesetting my thesis. So I tried a lot of the features and I'm really impressed by the flexibility and so far more than satisfied with the results. Now I obviously need a bibliography and tried to get it working today. But whatever I tried, I can't seem to get the entries to show up in the pdf. Flowfram-like behavior?

Is there a way to get behavior like flowfram using ConTeXt? Specifically, I mean the ability to define a set of "frames" or boxes, possibly several on a page or across a series of pages, and have the text automatically flow from one box to another in a prescribed order? I'm interested in doing InDesign-like layouts, which might have multiple "stories", each of which can flow across multiple frames on multiple pages. Using flowfram with LaTeX comes pretty close (though only one story can flow from frame to frame), but there are conflicts with the longtable package and potentially others. I figured since one of the goals of ConTeXt (as I understand it) was to avoid inter-package conflicts, perhaps this would offer a better solution. Heading Font Size and Figures in Headings

What is the \setuphead option to set font size? I have some small icons that I would like to place on the same line as some of my section titles. I would also like these icons to appear in the table of contents.The code I'm using: \section{\placefigure[force]{none}{\externalfigure[timers]}Timers}. I cannot get the placement correct. Instead of being aligned with and to the left of the section title, the figure appears centered on the page a couple of lines above it, in both the text body and the table of contents. I've tried other options besides [force]: [left], [here], [line], the result is always the same.
