math: using bold charaters for number sets

Dear ConTeXt folks, according to [1] the number sets were originally set using bold characters and only on the blackboard the double strokes were used. ConTeXt defines for example `\naturalnumbers` or `\reals` [2] which are set using double strokes. How can I redefine those to be just bold? Thanks, Paul PS: Does somebody actually use these commands (`\naturalnumbers`, …`) or do you define for example `\N`? mkiv and non-universal sans-serif kerning

Greetings, long-time reader, first-time writer here. I've been using ConTeXt for about a year and, until now, been able to solve all my problems using the wiki or the mailing list, so a "keep up the good work!" is certainly in order. ;-) My problem concerns kerning in mkiv, which apparently doesn't work for all sans-serif fonts. It does seem to work for TeX Gyre Heros and Latin Modern Sans, but not, as an example of a font shipped with ConTeXt, DejaVu. Here's a short testcase: \usetypescript[dejavu] \setupbodyfont[dejavu,12pt,rm] \starttext Token (kerned) T{\char"200C}oken (unkerned) {\ss Token (kerned)} {\ss T{\char"200C}oken (unkerned)} \stoptext (U+200C is the "zero width non-joiner", rather useful as an invisible breaker of kerns and ligatures.) Expected behavior: first line "To" kerned, second line "To" not kerned, third line "To" kerned, fourth line "To" not kerned. footnotes: is this a bug?

Hi all, this is something that has made me wonder: am I doing something wrong here, or is this a bug with footnote placement? Run the attached example, look at the last 2 pages, 5 and 6. On p. 5, the footnotes run off the page area. On p. 6, why is there so much space between text area and footnote area. The reason for this somewhat exotic set-up: our publisher wanted the footnotes of the last page of every chapter to start right after the text, not at the bottom of the page. In the end, I told them I couldn't do it, and they were fine with it. But I still think it should be possible; I've looked into a number of books, and it seems a common layout in the humanities. Maybe someone has a bright idea? (Wolfgang, you answered to this problem 2 weeks ago and suggested having "aftersection={\setupnote[footnote][location=high]}" in \setuphead, but this triggers the same problems). So maybe a bug? Hi Khaled, I took a look at the lunamark code, and ran it on some (copied) sample. As it was much slower than I'd expected from lpeg I messed around a little and could bring down the runtime on the sample from 2 sec to 0.1 sec. Anyhow, there is room for improvement so I wonder If I should take the code, wrap it up a bit, and make a module so that we can directly process markdown in context. (Of course we then need to keep an eye on how the original develops, if mkdown develops at all.) Using mycrotypography features with simplefont module and OTF/TTF

Dear all, I'm trying to enable protrusion on a text composed with a ttf font (tried otf converted from ttf as well) and using the simplefont module. We have tried different things but did not see any difference in the results. problem with columnsetspan

Hi All, I wonder if you can help: I have been having a problem with \startcolumnsetspan when I was trying to create a magazine layout for a Uk psychodrama organisation. metapost question (bug?)

Hello, I have a question for metapost specialists: I am looking for some sort of effect, built upon a zig-zag line. The first graphic in the minimal example below is as I would expect. The second graphic seems to be drawn without the point at (0,0). (Ignore the asymmetry at the end of the path in the 2nd, this is to be expected in this minimal example.) Is the result correct or is this a bug? A cases type environment using a right brace?

I'm trying to typeset a small column of numbers with a right brace on the right, and nothing on the left. (Sort of like the opposite to the right hand side of a cases environment). I've tried: \definemathmatrix[group][left={},right={\,\right\} }] \startgroup 10\NR 9\NR 8\NR \stopgroup But this just gives me errors: and the right brace in my group definition is just ignored. So, how can I get a brace which extends to the full height of the column? If I use \definemathmatrix[group][left={},right={\,\rbrace}] This just gives me a small brace, and doesn't extend it vertically. Hello, Is it possible (using ConTeXt MKII) to put a frame (and/or other highlighters) around an aligned multiline formula, and also around a single line of this equation array? (The equation number should align correctly outside the frame.) \mframed within an alignment seems to refuse the job. Digging the mailinglist brought up a 2006 hint of Hans referring to a \definealigned command which I also could not bring into action. Hello, this question in not straightly related to Context, but Context users may have solved it and Ctx may be used to solve it. I would need to get the following information from .pdf file(s): - number of pages, - common width and height of pages (provided that they are the same; otherwise the dimension can be e.g. zero). The final goal is to use Ctx as a .pdf joining engine - to provide this, I need to know whether the .pdf to be inserted is portrait or landscape oriented, what is its size (so if to be scaled or not) etc. So Lua inside Ctx may be used to get the required .pdf info, if necessary. If an external program was used, it should be non-interactive (command-line oriented), free and working under Windows. Does anyone have any experience with such a task? Kind regards, Lukas -- Ing. How well do ConTeXt (lua)module for other users?

Hello ConTeXist. I have done the module (for context), which is entirely written in Lua (ConTeXt definitions are done through Lua too). I wonder how it can be loaded into ConTeXt file. Have I to use the beginning of the file: \startluacode dofile ("my-module.lua") \stopluacode to loading the module? I would like to use \usemodule [my-module.lua], but there is a problem, that code must be inside \startluacode ... \stopluacode environment. But when I put my luacode into \startluacode ... \stopluacode into my-module.mkiv file, then I have a problem with catcodes inside strings defining by [[ ... ]]. Or must be module consists of two separate files (my-module.lua and my-module.mkiv)? Must I to load the Lua module file (my-module.lua) into ConTeXt module file (my-module.mkiv) by command \ctxlua{dofile("my-module.lua ");} and then load module file (my-module.mkiv) into my user file by command \usemodule[my-module]? Is there something like \useluamodule[....] or \usemodule[anyluaswitch][modulefile] ??? How to proceed in these cases? I find it inappropriate to divide the module into two separate files. Hello, let's have the following code: ---- \setuplayout[page] \starttext AAA \page \copypages[cow.pdf] BBB \startTEXpage \externalfigure[cow] \stopTEXpage \page CCC \stoptext ---- Texts "AAA" and "BBB" are written from the strict left top corner of the page - page has no header nor backspace. So does the "cow" - it fills one page perfectly. That's OK. But when the text "CCC" is typeset, it seems a "default" layout is restored - see the space up and left, also the header appears; that's unwanted. ConTeXt -> LaTeXt -> ODT?

I another thread I talked about my problems with converting my ConTeXt file to an editable format. In principal going the xhtml way seemed best. But yesterday I got talking with someone in the train. He told me that it was possible to convert ConTeXt to LaTeXt and LaTeXt to an ODT file. This could solve my problem. Was this person correct? If yes, how would I do this? -- Cecil Westerhof

Two days ago I already posted about this. But because of a glitch at my side, it became a conversation between me and Hans Hagen. I have almost finished writing documentation with ConTeXt. Now the client also needs to have the possibility to change the document. We are so far that the client will work with Adobe Acrobat. Now I have to prove that they can edit it. My boss has a 'recent' version 8 (latest is X). It does not look very promising to edit a document, but that is at this moment not the biggest problem. When I try to change text, I get: All or part of the selection has no available system font. You cannot add or delete text using the currently selected font. I have added a screenshot of the font properties. Is this a problem because of the old Adobe version, or the used fonts? If the latter, which fonts should I use to circumvent this problem? At the moment I am using: \usetypescript[helvetica] \setupbodyfont[helvetica] because they did not like the default font. -- Cecil Westerhof

General suggestion: Unit tests for ConText

Hi, during my work with context I wrote a bunch of fewliners mainly to test how to do things. When there change from mkii to mkiv occured many of my mini-tests failed and later with the growing of mkiv restartet to work - some just without adaption.. some with some adjustment to a new syntax. I realize that they have the same functionality like unit-tests - just instead of comparing classes and variables - a pdf-output is visually compared. So I like to suggest to introduce unit tests for context. It would a) increase the quality of context as it makes the testing easier for the developer b) it also would be a great source of minihowtos for learning context. Before I write my technical ideas about this I would like to know what are you thinking about this idea?

Hi, I uploaded a beta: - Project structure related files are now dealt with in lua: it's mostly compatible but somewhat more strict (proper push and pop). In the log file the used structure is summarized. - All writing from lua to tex is now under control of the cld infrastructure. This means that logging is more complete. The speed penalty is neglectable and in some places faster. - There are a couple of fixes related to marks. - There are a couple of fixes (thanks to Wolfgang, who checks all commands as part of the user interface (setups) documentation). - In \asciimode, %% now can be used as traditional tex comment starter. Also, modules and environments are loaded under the normal catcode regime. - Typing gets frontstripped with the number of spaces in front of \stoptyping so that one can have nicely formatted input like: \startitemize \startitem test \starttyping test \stoptyping \stopitem \stopitemize - Entities in xml mode have a slightly different roundtrip treatment now and hopefully Thomas S as well as Hans vd M files still work ok. - Unicode math variants (supported by xits) are supported: \mathematics { \utfchar{"2229} = \utfchar{"2229}\utfchar{"FE00} = \vsone{\utfchar{"2229}} } - Defining commands at the lua end now also handles arg only cases and has better tracing. - Some other other things, like \startlayout[page] ... \stoplayout and whatever I forgot. unwanted page break

Dear all, I have a strange output today. Writing a sentences, it makes a page break even though there are enough space for the remaining sentences. Here are sample output.(the lines is a frame) As you see there are enough space, I think. Sometimes, the section title is located at the bottom of the page, so I put \page to make the new section starts from a new page. Hello list, I'm currently using the built in bib-module in mkiv together with a bib database file. How can I set it up so that clicking on a reference takes me to the corresponding entry in the publication list? Example: ...lots of text... You can find more information in [23]. ...many more pages of text... Publications ... [23] Hoekwater, T. (2006). CONTEXT Publication Module, The user documententation. ... When clicking on "[23]" in the text, I want to jump right to the [23] entry in the publication list. Is this possible?

inner/outer margin: confused width

Hi, the width of my inner and outer margin are different and the pagelayout is double sided. When I use \ininner and \inouter directly, always the correct width is used. But as soon I put it into a function the wrong margin width is often used. I attached two files: - simple example tex file - the pdf output of that example file In the example pdf you can see starting from page five the mixed up result. Is there something I do wrong with the double sided mode? Or is this an issue how the function is written? Thanks in advance! P.

You know, when I hear the word "layer", I have some ideas about how it should/could/might work, and probably these ideas are different than Hans'. So I imagine that \definelayer / \setuplayer defines a rectangular shape on the page, possibly framed/colored/etc., which is going to appear on all pages (default) or on selected ones. The contents of layers are set with \setlayer, (with some - mysterious for me - "setups" trickery if they are going to change from page to page), and they are actually put on the page by \setupbackgrounds. (And I have no idea what \flushlayer does in this conceptual framework.) So layers are actually kind of "beneath" ordinary page contents. right and left alignment in header w/ linebreak sign

Hi, I am trying to have the header text aligned at the outer border of margin. At the moment I have \setupheadertexts[margin][][\rightaligned{\CurrentChapter}][\leftaligned{\CurrentChapter}][] and in the text \chapter{A very, very long long heading} and it works like I expect it. But as soon I have a linebreak in the heading (via \\) I get following error message: structure > sectioning > chapter @ level 2 : 0.1 -> A very,\\very long long title ! Extra }, or forgotten \endgroup. system > tex > error on line 1 in file context-test-struktur3.tex: Extra }, or forgotten ... As soon I remove the alignment in the header also the chapter with the linebreak sign works - but of course I get then a wrong alignment. How can I make that the header works with the correct alignment and linebreaks in the heading? (header should be still without linebreaks) Thanks in advance! Hello all, For several hours trying to find solutions of problem. My minimal example (I mention it at the end of email) for clear reasons show, that : 7 is not number. 7 is number. 7is not number. 7is not number. In the first is argument '\value' negotiable to the value, in second it is not possible (but for clear reasons too). I would need to find from argument ie macro '\\value' in the LUA function its numerical value. Is there any function that would do that? I need something as a function of context (...), which would, however, its output is not located into ConTeXt, but its result get to back to a Lua function or into variable. It is something like the expansion of an existing ConTeXt macro to its value. Some official documents has their own numbering system. In that case, it is very convenient to define new itemgroup following its rule and forget defining the symbol for each level every time. Hi, I'm writing a report about my internship at the moment with ConTeXt. There's one problem: I would like to turn off the header and footer on the page with the table of contents. Hi, Here are a few questions. 1. The output of \section{one} \section{two} is 1.1 one 1.2 two But is it possible to suppress the prefix chapter number like 1 one 2 two ? 2. When defining custom itemgroup, we can set each level using the predefined item headers, like n, r, 1, 2, ...., and it works fine. I am trying to use newly defined conversion, but I couldn't succeed. Is it possible to set an itemgroup using predefined item and custom made item head like \def\circlednum#1{\uchar{36}{95+#1}} \defineconversion[cnum][\circlednum] ? Thank you and Have a nice weekend. I updated Ruby to the latest and greatest beta but have the same results: TeXUtils does not function correctly when processing .tui files, likely due to character encoding issues in Ruby. I'm running Ruby 1.9.2 and this seems to be the problem. 1.8.7 was working fine on other machines. There are evidently large changes in Ruby API and string handling and character encoding in upgrading from 1.8.x -> 1.9.x. I'm making the assumption that the only way to handle this is to downgrade Ruby. Are there any alternatives? Thanks for your help again!

Hi all, is this the intended behavior? In mkiv, no line break after an n-dash; in mkii only if it is keyed in as "--", not directly as the utf char. I think lines should be broken at n-dashes. From \chapter to \startchapter \stopchapter

Instead of only pdf I also need to generate XHTML. For this I need to use \startchapter and \stopchapter instead of \chapter. When it is like: \chapter{A descriptive title} I have to change it to: \startchapter[title=A descriptive title] . . . \stopchapter But how do I change something like: \chapter[aboutLink]{A descriptive title} -- Cecil Westerhof

Hello, the following question may relate to XML processing rather to Context. But someone may have needed to solve the problem. Lets have a File.export which was generated by Context with "\setupbackend[export=yes,xhtml=yes,css=yes]". Such a XML output file uses tags like: <section> <sectionnumber> <sectiontitle> <sectioncontent> <itemgroup> <item> ... Has anyone solved conversion of such a file to an [arbitrary] .(x)html? I have only slight knowledge about XML transformations - the task is just about converting the Context XML to XHTML - and I would be hardly able to write a XSLT from scratch. Moreover, I don't have personal experience with any XML processor/converter. It wouldn't be so important how the resulting .html would be "perfect"; the main goal is to convert Context File.export to File.html with working hyperlinks to view it in a web page viewer. Could anyone describe his experience? - Processor, support file(s) (XSLT?); any demos of such support files (their "minimals") or "complex solutions" would be welcome; whatever working solution.
