Hello, I have a ready document in A5 and want to rearrange selected pages next to each other on A4 (homeprinter, proofreading). In LaTeX I was using »pdfpages«, e.g.: \usepackage[final]{pdfpages} \begin{document} \includepdf[pages={42,1-41},landscape,nup=1x2,scale=1.005]{my.pdf} \end{document} Is something like this possible in ConTeXt? macro string in metapost

The goal is to make the following string in metapost: string s; where s must become "\MPcolor{Blue}". and ultimately execute this at the right moment with: scantokens s; The following makes s = "MPcolor{Blue}": s := "MPcolor" & char oct"134" & char oct"173" & "Blue" & char oct"134" & char oct"175"; But I seem unable to add a \ in front of it without expanding the string by TeX. Thus it does not work to put: s := char oct"134" & "MPcolor" & char oct"134" & char oct"173" & "Blue" & char oct"134" & char oct"175"; Placing a \noexpand in front does not help. How to? ConvertToConteXt 0.2 - convert special ConTeXt-characters (PHP)

At first: I am ConTeXt-newby and know PHP very well. @Peter Münster/Aditya Mahajan : I think \startasci and \stopasci is not the solution, when you generate ConTeXt-code with php full of ConTeXt-macro-calls: because sometimes the special-characters are ConTeXt-special-characters and sometimes they are purely the wanted text. @Philipp Gesang: I think Luatex could do the same job for me as PHP - however I am familar with PHP. @all: of course not every Character, i am converting, is a ConTeXt-special-character. Though I don't know all important characters I took all I could imagine. Shurly I converted too much however it is no problem: I have tested my function "ConvertToConteXt" with 400 Pages full of text and lots of ConTeXt-special-characters and ConTeXt-macro-calls and compiled a nice book with ConText. Which character must not be converted? ConvertToConteXt - convert special ConTeXt-characters (PHP)

Hello, I am just programming a catalog which should be printed. I have a lot of data, text and pictures in a MySQL-database and want to generate a nice catalog with ConTeXt. To get the data from MySQL to ConTeXt I use PHP as an Interface: MySQL -> PHP -> ConTeXt And lot's of ConTeXt-macros will make a nice layout :-) To give something back to this ConTeXt-community, I will put some helpfull PHP-functions into the wiki of contextgarden.net. After some struggling with text colouring in metafun I finally encountered on the wiki: Another difference is the way text is handled in mkiv. In particular, color (withcolor) is not applied to metapost text. For example, draw thelabel(decimal i, (i, 0) scaled 1cm) withcolor red ; currently does not work in mkiv. However, label(textext("\color[red]"& decimal i), (i, 0) scaled 1cm); does work. This second solution works both in mkiv and in mkii. (Note that \color[red] can be abbreviated \red.) My question: is currently in "currently does not work in mkiv" in fact permanently or will this restriction soon be lifted? If the restriction is here to stay, I will have to find a workaround for my label-typesetting code in metapost. Or perhaps someone can tell me how to make "textext" use a color existing in the "metapost world". That would work as well. Explaining my setup: The colors are taken up in metapost with def defineColors (expr outlineColor, …) … outlinecolor_ := outlineColor … enddef; which is called in ConTeXt as …(\MPcolor{aColor}… But I do not know how to transform the \MPcolor{aColor} back into a form to be used as for example textext("<aColor>… Hans van der Meer

Hello, I've installed Scite on a Linux-Computer. I can build the pdf with F5; when I start to write a context-command the completion is suggested, e.g. \pa -> \page There is no syntax-highlighting. How to switch it on? Regards Jannis

Hello! At the recent ConTeXt meeting Hans helped me update my ConTeXt installation and explained about a new way of getting ConTeXt to work with SciTe, it now uses external lexers and even spell-checking is now possible for some languages. The SciTe tips and tricks page will have to wait, but I made a new wiki page for the installation instructions. This one isn't linked anywhere yet and the page title should probably be changed before that, but I leave that to wiki admins. My old "Simple Windows installation page" should probably be unlinked or even deleted after this new and better one has found its proper spot. For now, the new Windows+SciTe page is at <http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Windows:_ConTeXt_Suite_with_editor_%28SciTe%29> I checked the instructions by installing the combo on a "blank" new Win64-laptop (of the cheap and sleazy type, this keyboard drives me nuts!) and it works. It is not exactly "out-of-the-box", but nothing a seasoned Windows user or a half-good admin couldn't manage. I assume small .bat scripts could be written to automatize it even further, but I'm no programmer, it is faster for me to do a bit of manual work instead. Italic correction spoils XHTML-output

Hi list, some time ago there was a discussion about the following issue, demonstrated by \starttext \startcolumnset[n=2] \input knuth \input tufte \column \inmargin{This is not in the margin!} \input tufte \inmargin{This is in the wrong margin} \input knuth \stopcolumnset \stoptext Unfortunately the note is still in the wrong margin. Interestingly, the note before the paragraph is not even in the margin. Has there been any progress on that? Or is there any possibility to get the number of the current column, like "\thecolumnnumber"? Then one (I) could write a small macro to handle this, I think. Thanks in advance, Stefan

custom command \myframedsection does not always work. Bug?

Hi All, Please see the working example below. I have defined a command called \myframedsection. It works the first two times I use it, but not the third time. I think it has something to do with using \startitemize...\stopitemize before the command is used the third time. But I am not sure. Can someone please tell me why it is not working, and how I can change my definition so that it works? Is this a bug? Project Structure in MkIV

Dear gang, I am porting a huge project from mkii to mkiv and am running into structure problems. I now realize that \start-stopproject no longer compiles the entire project, just stick to products and components. I am also dividing what was one long book into two books, and I'd like to compile both books at once to keep cross-references between the two books operative: I've turned the project into a product, the products into components, and components into inputs. Obviously I'm running into problems ;-) : First:One thing that is unclear now is how the \environment is inherited. Attached is a basic test set. If I compile the product file islamwalayah.tex, I get the expected output it appears. If I compile the component file islamcosmology.tex, the alias \Islam gives an undefined control sequence. That is, it does not inherit env-aliases.tex. If I comment % \Islam the component file compiles, but the layout is not inherited from env-islamwalayah.tex. How do I fix this? Any related general advice? Hi there, I have been searching in the documentation (ConTeXt Reference Manual, ConTeXt: An Excursion and the wiki) and I don't know how to implement a basic feature: different title numbers. I want to have chapters numbered with Roman numbers and sections with capital letters and that none of them contains any other number than its own (no part or/and chapter in chapter or section titles). But if I reflow my documents, there are no interwordspaces. I know that there is no space-character in Tex. What I need: * have influence on the column width (2 columns, both same size) * automatic split with repeating headers * more than one paragraph (with fill in rules) in a cell possible (but this simulated by invisible cells) * some borders (not so sure about that...) announcing server change, possible downtime

Dear ConTeXt-ers, in the following days we will piecewise move parts of old server to a new machine (this will happen once again, but this time it might be slightly more dramatic change). Thus I would like to ask you to be patient if something stops working. The wiki has already been moved, so this should not be a problem. Some sites will be reorganized, but I will inform you about details. In particular, minimals will also change, but details will follow. One thing that might be a tiny bit problematic are SVN repositories. We need to upgrade them from SVN 1.5 to 1.7, so anyone using SVN repositories from garden *might* need to do a fresh checkout. I didn't test anything yet though, I only know that I had problems with the client on my machine now that MacPorts upgraded SVN. (I have also found a weird bug in 1.7.1 client.) I have no idea how server-side upgrades behave on clients. This should more or less affect only me, Taco and those who build binaries for minimals. Plus those who work on meeting/group website occasionally. Mojca

I want a simple interface for processing tables (I don't need all the power and complexity of cals tables and want to learn something in the process). Some more ToC questions

Thanks to the great expertise of folk on this mailgroup, I have my chapter headings set so that each one comes out as Chapter n Name of Chapter However, I have a few more questions. First: if I use "completecontent" to display the contents, how can I have the "Contents" title display without my "Chapter" line? That is, is there a way of turning off my chapter command temporarily? (I've found that "title" doesn't work here: If I use "\title{Contents} \placecontent" I still get a "Chapter" line.) Second: I'm writing out a book of student notes, and each chapter ends with a set of exercises. I'd like these exercises to be typeset as unnumbered sections ("subject"s), and appear so in the ToC. Like: 4.4 Second last section 4.5 Last section Exercises What is the best way of doing this (MkII)? I've tried \definehead[exercise][section] \setuphead[exercise][number=no] \setuplist[exercise][headnumber=no] but that doesn't work on its own, and when paired with \definecombinedlist[content][exercise,chapter,section] wipes out the contents completely. Learning layers: setlayer vs. setlayerframed

Hello! Based on a discussion with Hans at the ConTeXt meeting I'm starting to migrate my book covers from CorelDraw to ConTeXt using layers. After a bit of experimenting I managed to achieve my first layer, but looking at the examples on the wiki page, I'm wondering: what's the difference between \setlayer and \setlayerframed. Is the latter a subset of the first and possibly equal to \setlayer [name] % name of the layer {\framed[...=...,...=...]{LAYER}} % the actual contents of the layer or something else? And which one should I use, anyway? I need to put a bit of text and a bit of graphics onto the pages, but nothing complicated, just "boxes". But as I'm starting from zero, it would be nice to know what's the smartest way of doing it (on the moment). I'm running the newest or at least almost newest beta of ConTeXt and can update if needed. How do I test for empty labeltext?

Hello, The following code \setuplabeltext[test=] test is \doifemptyelse{\labeltext{test}}{empty}{not empty} doesn't work as intended for the reasons that I approximately understand (not exactly, but I understand that there might be a lot of weird stuff returned when I ask for labeltext). However I have no idea how to check if text is empty or not. As an exception :) :) :), MKIV hints should be highly appreciated and enough for this particular application. Question about chapter headings

I'm trying to set up a chapter heading which looks like this: Chapter 4 This is the fourth chapter That is, there are two lines, one of which says "Chapter" followed by its number, and the next which is the chapter title. What is the easiest way to do this? I've tried \def\chap#1#2{Chapter #1\crlf #2} \setuphead[chapter][ command=\chap, style=bfc, after={\blank[1cm]}, ] But this doesn't work (and nor do many other variations in the "chap" command). Image compression/resizing in PDFs

Hi all, Is there a way to have context automatically compress or resample included images to a given output resolution? I have not been following recent developments... I can obviously "pre-reduce" all images to the desired dpi. But: 1) This is a bit of work (and hard to get non-technical people to do) 2) In 5 years time we might want the images to be higher resolution and not be as concerned about PDF size. But the information will be lost (or be elsewhere). So a command line or document setting would be ideal, is there such a thing? \setpdfimageresolution[300dpi]. Thanks, -- John Devereux

Hello, Is there any simple way to typeset the following example properly in ConTeXt? I have an example of text that has to obey lines and spaces, but I would like to apply some color to make it more readable. The attachment contains an example of HTML which displays fine in my browser, and it should look similar with ConTeXt. I have problems with literal typesetting of <span class=...> (that should have applied style instead), but maybe I only have wrong settings in my parser. When I use \xmlsetfunction{main}{pre}{lxml.displayverbatim}, then I cannot color the numbers. When I use, according to Wolfgang's suggestion, \startxmlsetups pre \setuplines[style=mono,space=yes] \startlines \xmlflush{#1} \stoplines \stopxmlsetups then all the spaces are eaten up by XML parser (or somewhere else), so that I don't get the desired result. Any ideas about this? I'm also sending a self-contained example with \setuplines which doesn't really work in the desired way. Thank you very much, Mojca

The resulting dimensions seem to be 10cm and 18 cm. So I guess the 2 cm mean to shift it up some how. Could someone please explain to me how `xyscaled` works in this case please. Script to upload modules to context garden

Hi all, I finally got tired of manually uploading new versions of modules to context garden. So, here is a ruby script that automates the task: <https://github.com/adityam/contextgarden-update/blob/master/update> This uses `mechanize` library for HTML scrapping and `highline` library for user interaction. To use the script, simply run update [modulename] The script will prompt you for username and password, then display a list of all the modules that you own, and you can select a module to update. Then, the script asks for a new version number and filename for the zip file and then uploads the module. If the optional modulename argument is provided, then that module is automatically selected for update. I don't try to parse the returned page, but simply dump it to the output. Hopefully, someone else might find this useful. Aditya

Hi, When using the \startstandardmakeup ... \stopstandardmakeup the text gets vertically centered on the page. Normally \setupmakeup[standard][top=,bottom=] would produce the text vertically aligned normally. However in the beta of today \setupmakeup[standard][top=,bottom=] has no effect and the text is aligned vertically centered. - Do I miss something? Willi

I cannot find the answer to the following question in Knuth's Metafont book. The following definition with a trailing text argument: def mydef (expr a, b, c) text modifier = if <modifier = empty>: else: fi enddef; How can I do the switch on an empty or nonempty modifier argument? It is not a string because calling its length fails with an error. I must do the switch, because "fill modifier" with an empty "modifier" gives horrible results. Usage would be calls like: mydef(1,2,3) withcolor green; % with modifier text mydef(1,2,3); % without modifier text Thanks in advance. Hans van der Meer
