equation numbering

ConTeXt still has some mysteries for me ;-) This time it is the equationnumbering. Doing \placeformula\startformula..\stopformula gives the equation a certain number, lets say (1.5). Now I change the call to \placeformula[equ:thisfml]\startformula..\stopformula and the number changes to (1.6). Why is this? What I have in mind is to number all formula consecutively with (chapternumber.1), chapternumber.2) etc. Regardless whether I want to reference some of the equations later on and some can stay without a reference because that is not needed. Nevertheless, the ascending numbering pleases me. Hans van der Meer

Floating picture in margin with no interference with text/sections

Dear list, I use mkiv which was installed today. Two questions. 1) Is it possible to put floating pictures in the margin without locking them in the current section? See the following example: %%% Start example \setuplayout[ rightmargin=5cm, width=fit, ] %\setuphead[section][ %aligntitle=float, %] \starttext \showframe \section{This is a short section} It contains one figure. \placefigure[inright,top][none]{A caption.}{\externalfigure[cow][width=4cm]} \section{This is another short section} It contains the same figure. \placefigure[inright,top][none]{A caption.}{\externalfigure[cow][width=4cm,height=6cm]} \section{This is a third section} \input knuth \stoptext %%% Stop example The result is given by http://tmp.oblandat.se/fig1.pdf If I uncomment (what I thought was the solution) the \setuphead part I get http://tmp.oblandat.se/fig2.pdf which looks better, but not as I want it. I want the sections and the text to look just as if there were no figures at all, and I want the figures to be stacked in the margin, the first one at the top of the margin, and the second one just below the first one. Is this possible? 2) If I really must not want a new page right after a section head (this happens in my long document, but no minimal example is given), is there any penalty or something i can set? Integral limits on wrong place

Dear list, in the latest minimals (downloaded today 15 nov 2011) I get the integral limits placed below and above the integral sign, per default. %%% Example %\setupmathematics[integral=nolimits] \starttext $\int_a^b f(x)\, dx$ \startformula \int_a^b f(x)\, dx. \stopformula \stoptext %%% End of example The result is http://tmp.oblandat.se/integraltest.pdf I'd expect the limits to be placed more to the right. Even if the line \setupmathematics[integral=nolimits] is uncommented (as suggested on the wiki) nothing is improved. Is this something that has changed recently? I can add a \nolimits at every integral but that is not a nice option. It would be nice to have the integrals back as they used to be. With best regards (and thanks in advance), Mikael

Bug report: --result switch fails in larger documents

All, Now that I've recovered my latest beta: context.mkiv 2011.11.14 16:17 (thanks Mojca, Hans) I can confirm that the bug still exists as described: On a short test file: context --environment=arabtestI.tex --result=tmp arab-testII.xml success: mtx-context | result renamed to: tmp system | total runtime: 2.839 On a larger file of 54 pages context --environment=svo-tei.tex --result=tmp svoboda_diary.xml failure: mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 1 tmp.pdf not created, but svoboda_diary.pdf is updated instead. Regression error? List correspondence from March with subject '620 pages limit?' seems related. Correspondence ends with "Taco found the bug (thanks!): There is a fix luatex rev. 4093." Thoughts? Good day to you, I saw the related messages in the archive, but I don't really get it. I'm looking for a (global) setting, that prevents the last line of a paragraph to slip on the next page. If it really must, it shall also drag another one with it for company. Please enlighten me.

inactive hyperlink?

There is something with creating hyperlinks I do not understand. Did \setupinteraction[state=start] Situation-1: \placefigure[][reftofigure].. gives me with \in.. a clickable link. Situation-2: \pagereference[reftoplace] (or \textreference, \reference} do give me a link-colored text with \in{txt}[reftoplace] but nothing happens. What in my definition of the link is wrong? Adding \setupreferencing[interaction=all] didn't help. Hans van der Meer

Placing text in the margin of a header or the top right corner of a page

Dear All, I am trying to place a framed text in the top right corner of each page of a screen document and it looks like (cont-eni) some invocation of \setupheadertexts might do the job. Unfortunately, I have only been able to place my text in the margin of the body of the page, using \margintext. Ideally, I would like to have the framed text box flush with the top and right edge of a page, but any approximate solution or a pointer to some document to read (that could educate me) will be much appreciated. Natural Tables---Including a bit of cell style in a \define

I am creating documentation labeling the circuits of electrical and network panels for a project of mine. Enclosed is a minimal example. What I would like is to define two macros: \unused and \spare (\unused referring to a circuit with no breaker installed, while \spare referring to a circuit with a breaker, but no load). I wish these definitions to not only include the represented text and font directives, i.e., {\tt [Unused]}, but also shade the cell in a background color. However, I cannot seem to figure out how to do that. Including the `[background=color,backgroundcolor=gray]' in the \define seems to be expanded back simply as text. setupinteraction kills dodoubleargument

In my documents I use a macro in footnotes, which is defined though \dodoubleargument. However, enabling interactions (which must be done too) plays havoc with \dodoubleargument, though \dosingleargument seems to escape unharmed. Why is this? Can it be repaired? Overview screen containing multiple pages

There is a python script called impressive (http://impressive.sourceforge.net/) that adds some eyecandy to presentations. One of the features that it has is an overview screen at the end, like this: http://impressive.sourceforge.net/oview.png This is similar to the overview screen used in the ConTeXt showcase by Hans: http://pragma-ade.com/show-man.pdf I want to include such an overview in my slides, but am not sure if it can be done without using a separate tex file. My slides look like this (sorry Thomas, I am not using simpleslides at the moment) \starttext \startsection[title={...}] .... \stopsection \startsection[...] ... \stopsection \stoptext Each section spans over multiple pages. What I want is to have a last page which is equivalent to the following: \startcombination[n*n] {\externalfigure[\jobname][page=<page-number-of-first-section>]}{} {\externalfigure[\jobname][page=<page-number-of-second-section>]}{} .... \stopcombination I tried a simple test case \starttext \input knuth \page \externalfigure[\jobname][page=1,width=0.3\textwidth] \stoptext but that does not include the first page. So, I think that what I want is not possible, but I wonder if others have different ideas on how this might be implemented (after all \setuparranging does manage to do something similar without the need for a separate tex file). referencing

I have the following question about references. Using for example \at one can say somehting like "see on \at{page}[ref] for the figure.. But when the figure is one the same page it seems a bit superfluous to reference to it. In the same manner it is a bit of an overkill to put a hyperlink to the page where this link resides itself. It is clear that ConTeXt knows if it is on the same page as is referenced, because then a link is coloured with contrastcolor instead of color. Now the question: how easy/difficult is it to either suppress such an \at-reference or switch between chosen alternate texts for links on or off the same page as the referenced item? Dear ConTeXt folks, is it expected that \right)² is not recognized as \right)^2? \starttext Using ^2: \placeformula \startformula \left( a + b \right)^2 = a² + 2ab + b² \stopformula \placeformula \startformula \left( a + \frac72 \right)^2 \stopformula Using ². The first example does not display the problem that well because the parenthesis are too small: \placeformula \startformula \left( a + b \right)² = a² + 2ab + b² \stopformula \placeformula \startformula \left( n + \frac72 \right)² \stopformula \stoptext Please find the example also attached. Hide section content

Hi, I have a tex file that looks like follows: \startsection[title=...][review=yes] ... \stopsection \startsection[title=...][review=no] ... \stopsection When I compile the document with --mode=review, I want that all sections that have `review=no` should not be displayed. What is the best way of achieving this? In particular, can we have an option that'll let us say: \setuphead[section][placebody=hidden] (analogous to placehead=hidden). Aditya

another referencing question

I see that a \pagereference[ref:a] gets a link to it with \at{see}[ref:a]. But when I click on it, the jump to that page is not made. Not in Adobe Reader, nor in Apple's Preview. Is that the intended behaviour? Is it something I am doing wrong? Or what? Hans van der Meer

Hi, hm, I should place a table of contents at the end of my document. When issuing: \startsubject[title=Inhoud] \placelist[section] \stopsubject I get the section title but no TOC When issuing only \completelist[section] I get the TOC but no section title. equation refs broken?

Can someone confirm this? It seems that the equation reference mechanism is broken some time in the recent past. I have a small example done in (1) ConTeXt ver: 2011.07.13 20:14 MKIV (2) ConTeXt ver: 2011.11.17 23:31 MKIV These are respectively the first and last pdf's below. If true, it is very serious for me, because the I cannot prepare the upcoming texts for my students! Furthermore: \pagereference now introduces spurious white. For the bad vertical spacing on the left I have submitted a tentative bugfix to Hans Hagen. Framed "environment"

Is there an "environment" (i.e., like a \startframed ... \stopframed) method for using \framed{ ... } on a block of text? Certain \start ... \stop combinations don't seem to play well with \framed{ ... }. For example, \usemodule[amsl] \starttext \framed{ \startformula \startalign A=B \stopalign \stopformula } \stoptext fails evidently because \framed{ ... } and the \startalign ... \stopalign don't like one another. -- Troy Henderson

I get the impression that textbackground is not yet completely repaired in: The small example below shows that location text starts at the left margin instead of at the chosen point in the text. That is, the green part should be "text with background" instead of "result. This is text w". Imposition eats footnote numbers (on the latest beta)

Hello there. With the latest beta, the following example fails to show the footnote number. Hi, I noticed that when updating the "suite" in my home directory I need to be a superuser. If not, I get: ---------------- ! I can't write on file `cont-en.log'. Dear ConTeXt folks, in the example for `\in` in the reference [1] there is a space after the »(«. \placeformula[eq:pythagoras] \startformula a^2+b^2=c^2 \stopformula This is explained in \in{Equation (}{)}[eq:pythagoras]. Normally this space is useful since the suffix is something like Table or Figure. Can `\in` be used with brackets or does another command have to be defined/used for that? Dear Hans, Many thanks for implementing space=small in \setupunits. It works nicely for me. However in the latest beta, Hertz is typeset as hz not Hz. It looks like the problem is line 154 of phys-dim.lua (it was typeset correctly a couple of days ago). Also the symbol for lux (line 198) should be lx [2]. Degrees, minutes and seconds of arc (also degrees Celsius) are an exception and are not supposed to have any space between the digits and the degree symbol [1], so to be correct, I think Context should by default veto any space between digits and numbers, in these cases only. BTW, NIST has a handy reference for anyone typesetting physical quantities [1], although the BIPM documentation is the canonical reference. Footnote bug with \setuparranging

Hi all, I have a small problem with footnotes. If I use \setuparranging to print two A5 pages on one A4, the footnote index of the left page footnotes go to the right page. ERROR "context --version"

I have installed context-2011 as part of a system-wide texlive-2011 installation on Gentoo. Following various guides, I have done the following as a normal user: 1) rm -r ~/.texlive 2) luatools --generate 3) mtxrun --generate 4) context --make cont-en 5) context --generate But I get the following error when running "context --version": mtx-context | main context file: unknown, 'context.mkiv' not found But I have context.mkiv installed in /usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/ The 2011 version of context no longer has a "context.tex" file in the main CONTEXT distribution zipfile http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/current/cont-tmf.zip In outdated guides, it was mentioned that "context.tex" contained the version string. I have posted to the Gentoo-forums for help http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6875338.html#6875338 but I don't know wherein the problem lies.

Hi, For those using scite with the lexers that ship with context: version 3.00 has some problems with saving new files so I tries version 3.01 but that one crashes probably due to a mismatch in the scintilla lpeg lexer library (that unfortunately does not ship with scite itself). So, best stick to older version for the moment. How to reset numbers of formulas?

Hi, Is it possible to reset the numbers which appear after invoking \placeformula? To be more precise, I mean the following situation: \starttext Euler says \placeformula \startformula {\rm e}^{{\rm i} \pi} + 1 = 0. \stopformula The above formula will have number (1). Euler's formula is the same as the following \placeformula \startformula {\rm e}^{{\rm i} \pi} = - 1. \stopformula The above formula will have number (2), but for some reasons I wish to number it again as (1). \stoptext I would like to have a solution which works with ConTeXt mkiv. Strange numberconversion in appendix

Hello, I find this behavior a little odd: \starttext \startbodymatter \startplacefigure[reference=mill,title={A mill}] \externalfigure[mill] \stopplacefigure \startplacefigure[reference=cow,title={A cow}] \externalfigure[cow] \stopplacefigure \stopbodymatter \startappendices In \in{figure}[cow] on page \at[cow] is a cow. \stopappendices \stoptext The figure number is converted into roman numerals (Romannumerals). How can I change it to normal numbers? So that it says "figure 2". It should also be considered to make it the default setting.

Arrows and boxes in metapost.

Hello, I need a simple graphic that shows some boxes (frames) with text in it and has some arrows pointing to and from these boxes. (examples 267 and 268 on this page [1]) I was hoping to do this in MetaPost. Earlier this year this question went un-answered on this list: "How to use boxit MetaPost macros with ConTeXt minimals?" So, is there a solution or do I have to use label.rt(btex \framed[width=3cm,align=middle]{Text} etex, (1u,1.5u)); Which really feels uncomfortable in this case. Hi all, I've played with text backgrounds. Dear all I appear to have run up against a bug discussed last March. I'm newly running: mtx-context | main context file: /Users/jjc/context11-11/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/context.mkiv mtx-context | current version: 2011.11.14 16:17 with a short test file I run: context --environment=arabtestI.tex --result=tmp arab-testII.xml and the log concludes thus: mtx-context | main context file: /Users/jjc/context11-11/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/context.mkiv mtx-context | current version: 2011.11.14 16:17 but when I try to do the same thing on my full marked up text: context --environment=svo-tei.tex --result=tmp svoboda_diary.xml the log concludes like this: mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 1 I didn't notice this until I tried to use the --result flag because, in spite of the 'fatal error', a new pdf (that actually reflected changes I had made in the environment file) was in fact created using the name of the xml input: svoboda_diary.pdf. But when I used --result, a new pdf was created for the short file but not for the long one. Wondering why, I inspected the log and only then noticed: "mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 1" In the error case the lua stats in the log shows: mkiv lua stats > result saved in file - tmp.pdf but no tmp.pdf file is produced. Instead, svoboda_diary.pdf is updated; weird huh? In the discussion on the list Steffan said "Taco found the bug (thanks!): There is a fix luatex rev. 4093." So am I seeing a regression error here or, as is perfectly possible since I'm out there beyond the limits of my understanding, am I just doing something wrong or using the wrong tool? baffled as usual, Jon

Document with only figures

Hi, I would like to have a document with only figures, something like that: \starttext \placefigure[page]{\externalfigure[figure1]} \placefigure[page]{\externalfigure[figure1]} \placefloats \stoptext The problem is if I don't add some text, no PDF is created. (and this text will have its own page). I was expecting \placefloats to do what I want, but it's not working. And \placefigure doesn't have a 'center' option. Any ideas? Thanks Charles

Help with citation layout.

Dear list, I need the help of a BibTeX/citation module expert. I want to modify the appearance of @INBOOK entries. Currently they look like this (apa-de style): author (year) _booktitle_, Chapter chaptertitle, pages, publisher, edition. What I'm aming for is this: author (year) _chaptertitle_, In editor (Edt.): _booktitle_, pages, publisher, edition. Where chaptertitle refers to the title of the chapter (usually some sort of article or essay), very similar to arttitle. Is there a way to accomplish this? Or is the INBOOK entry not meant to do this? I'm especially having trouble to get the editor to show up (let alone having "In " in front of it). Does editor and author conflict here? Thank you for you help!
