Registers with distinguishable entries.

Dear list, For a book in the area of musicology I would like to make one register with entries of different kinds, distinguishable by their appearance in the register (or index or whatever). The index entries will mostly be authors, including composers, musical terms and musical compositions. The titles of the compositions and the foreign words are set in italic characters throughout in the text of the book. What I would like is to be able to distinguish all entries according to whether they are treated in the text, are shown in a musical example, or are mentioned only in a foot- or endnote. In many books page numbers indicating illustrations are set in italics. Pagenumbers indicating foot- or endnotes often have a suffix "n". Furthermore, when an indexed item is discussed on a number of consecutive pages, usually a range is given in the index, like 144-53, or 143 ff. Can all this be done in ConTeXt, and if so, can anybody give me advice on how to do it? I have tried making three different Registers, for text, for illustrations and for notes, but I cannot figure out how to combine them into one index. But also, whatever I set in \setupregister, they all look exactly the same: textstyle regular, pagestyle slanted. Moreover, in \setupindex (or whatever other name for the register), [indicator=no] is ignored. Are these bugs or am I doing things the wrong way? I add a (not so) minimal example. Example only works in mkii

Hi, folks. I've tried running the example from the "descriptions" article on the wiki and it works fine if I use MkII via "texexec" but fails miserably if I use MlIV via "context." Outside of changing "location" to "alternative" in the \definedescription command parameters, what else do I need to change to make the example run with MkIV? [MKIV] Itemize "nowhite" option broken

Commands with arguments with MetaPost

Scaling in setuplayout does not work with setuparranging

Hi, I'm using the latest beta and tried to arrange two slides on a single A4 sheet. I've defined my own paper size for the slides the sizes oriented on our corporate layout for presentations. To print two slides on a single A4 I have to scale them but I can't get this to work. Have a look at the attached minified example below. Without \setuparranging set the slides are scaled an one is put on each A4. As soon as I activate the arraging the scaling does not work anymore. Any ideas how to get this work? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks! Reducing inter-character spacing?

Hello, here comes yet another "I could do this in Word but can't figure it out how ConTeXt does it" font-related question: How can I reduces inter-character spacing in a font? I've found out that the spacing can be temporarily expanded by \stretched{}, but what's the opposite and how to control it? And I want to do it all over one product in my project, but on the other hand I don't need to reset it for any individual words or anything. (I assume that if the overall inter-character spacing is reduced, inter-word spacing will follow, but if not, I need to be able to reduce that, too.) I guess it isn't easily available because I'm not really supposed to be cramping the nicely designed fonts, especially not my nice new shiny Lucida OT - but I'm trying to create something in the style of past centuries when the style and requirements were different from today's. I've decided to use ConTeXt just because it should allow me to produce both the period-looking-but-illegible and nicely-typeset-modern-but-actually-usable versions of the same project. :-) TIA, Mari

I will try again adding more detail in the hope that this will help. The following is not a minimal example but a bare outline of what I have and where the problems with the cross-references arise. This structure works with MKII, so the query is whether something has changed in the command structure or whether the problem with cross-references that Wolfgang mentioned some time ago still persists. If the latter, it would be really good to if there is going to be a fix soon. In either case, I need a solution: the journal lives on online and the cross-references are essential to it. Page Numbering using IncludePicture from simple slides

Hi, I love the IncludePicture command from simple slides but now I've got a picture which I want to show stepwise. Therefore I created two pictures a simplified version and the full version. I just place them right one after the other. Now it would be perfect if I could force context not to increase the page number counter for the second image because in my handout I will only include the full picture and at the moment the additional slide is messing up my page numbers. Is there some easy way to do tufte-style side note?

Dear powerful ConTeXt users: Is there some way to do tufte style side notes? I googled and did found Wolfgang's solution (http://archive.contextgarden.net/message/20110906.202722.f501f115.en.html) but it's just too simple and cannot be used for production. Side notes will cluttered or fall out of pages. LaTeX does provide a good solution for this style. I am wondering if this is possible to do in context. I am also curious to know simple way to do multiple float style in ConTeXt (like graphics spanning text and margin and many others). Yue Wang

Changing navigation symbol

Hey list, I am typesetting some images with \externalfigure. I'd like to make some of them interactive such that clicking on them invokes a URL, but leaving them without borders. extracting word count from a *.words file

Consider this test file: \starttext \setupspellchecking[state=start,method=2] \ctxlua{languages.words.threshold=3} \input knuth \stoptext Typesetting this file produces a word list 'test.words' which ends like this: ["threshold"]=1, ["total"]=122, ["version"]=1, } Is there a way to extract the value for ["total"] ('122' in this case) so that I can use that value somewhere else, e.g. in a project file where I want to present a word count. I have written Python classes to automate reading a Tumblr blog and writing a file for processing by ConTeXt. No manual editing of the ConTeXt input file is allowed. Photos are incorporated in a graphic created using METAPOST commands embedded in the ConTeXt input file. Then the graphic is used as a background. I need this background to appear only on one page. My current solution is to use TeX conditionals to test if the page number has incremented, then reset the background to empty. This approach fails in many cases. New version of ConTeXt package for Notepad++ available

Dear Gang, I have made a new ConTeXt package for Notepad++ (Npp). Unfortunately the wiki is not letting me update the zip file (Patrick? Mojca?): "Upload warning | Files of the MIME type "application/zip" are not allowed to be uploaded." So for now, here is a dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k77ggveqdkfrevk/Npp-ConTeXt-120418.zip ========================== The zip contains two directories: 1) \AppData\Roaming\Notepad++ 2) \Program Files (x86)\Notepad++ AFTER you install Npp, copy the folder 1) into C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming And copy folder 2 into C:\Program Files (x86) if your system is 64-bit, and into C:\Program Files if it is 32-bit. XP directory structure uses "\Application Data" instead of \AppData. There may be other things to watch out for (I use Vista). Important: Back up your contextMenu.xml whenever you update to a newer version of Npp proper. For some reason, Npp overrides the user-defined contextMenu.xml and replaces it with the default. In fact, it's a good idea to back up your \Roaming\Notepad++ directory whenever you update Npp itself to a new version. Notes: 1. This updated package contains a new feature: You can wrap selected text with ConTeXt tags. Just select some text and right-click: Then choose what you want to do to the text. This has already saved me lots of time in my own writing, and lessens the risks of brace-mismatch etc. It also works if no text is selected. 2. You can also start projects, components, etc from the right-click menu. 3. You'll see the ConTeXt command shortcuts under the Macro menu. They used to be the same as Hans's Scite setup, but there are probably some differences now. I'll look at this matter later. 4. In future versions I may get rid of any and all references to mkii; deadenders ;-) can make their own shortcuts etc. But I am gearing this package towards new users who should not have to deal with mkii at all. 5. The toolbar has been modified. You can use the Customize Toolbar menu to bring back some default Npp buttons that I removed, etc. 6. The ConTeXt icons are quick and dirty. I welcome help from anyone who would like to help me with some nicer 16x16 ConTeXt icons. Eventually I want to expand this to a much richer palette of buttons. 7. Tooltips for commands are supported, but right now there is only one implemented: \startitemize[] Try it! Eventually I want to have descriptions of all autocomplete commands, literally at your fingertips in the editor! ======================== This is still a work in progress. There are a few missing commands from autocompletion/syntax highlighting, and there may be a private command or two of mine lurking in the highlighting. Eventually I want to move most of the functionality of this package to a lexer. I have used the extensive plugin/user-defined functionalities of Npp to get this package far, but a dedicated lexer-plugin would be the ideal thing. Any volunteers more than welcome, since lexer writing is outside of my skill-set. Once this is uploaded to the wiki I'll remove the dropbox link. Including font with document source

Hey list, Is there a way to include a set of font files with a ConTeXt document's source files such that a path to the directory containing the font can be directly specified in the environment? I was thinking that if it were possible to do this already, the simplefonts module might have a setup for this. Hey list, I'd like to use an MLA style bibliography with MKIV. The style is available here: www.reed.edu/cis/help/latex/bibtexstyles.html Actually, it doesn't matter to me whether it is that one or any that supports MLA already that ships with ConTeXt. In my environment file, I tried the following: \setuppublications[alternative=mla] That didn't appear to change anything, so I did what I normally do when I don't trust the output of ConTeXt. I changed the "mla" to a garbage string and it still compiled. So it must be either ignoring the style or I am doing it wrong. Hello, values of number and title of the current (sub...)section can be received by \structurenumber and \structuretitle commands. Is there a way how to get these values by Lua? Can anybody tell me how to correctly configure Notepad++ to use ConTeXt? I'm just starting with ConTeXt (and Tex BTW) and Scite seems to be too unpolished. One advantage that I can see of Scite over Notepad++ is that it has some autocompletion, besides that I think the interface and its "tools" are terrible. Hello all, I'm trying to teach myself to use the project structure. After a few rounds of trial and error (...and stupid naming schemes...) I'm almost there, but got stuck at my font setups. How to process a project residing in another directory

I try to process a ConTeXt project residing in a directory different from the current directory (where context is called), imagine e.g. a NFS mounted directory on a different host. I tried to point context to the project directory by specifying it by the command line option --path=absolute_path_to_the_directory but that did not work. Helge

Chinese hyphenation / line splitting

Hi All, We are having a go at typesetting one of our manuals in Chinese (gulp). Is there some trick to getting hyphenation working? (Or perhaps "line-splitting" is a better term, I don't even know if hyphens are used in Chinese). What I see in the PDF are unbroken lines running off the edge of the page. If I manually insert spaces, then the lines do break but seem to go slightly past the right-hand edge of the paper (so parts of the characters are lost). ConTeXt User Meeting / EuroTeX 2012?

Hello! I know I shouldn't be asking until after BachoTeX, but unfortunately my calendar for autumn is starting to fill up and there are things that should be settled pretty soon. (And I can't go to BachoTeX to sort things out there.) The page http://meeting.contextgarden.net/2012/ says that 6CM will be held in The Netherlands in connection with EuroTeX on October 8-12. The page also says that the arrangers can be contacted at <eurotex(a)ntg.nl>, but that address bounces so I had to resort to the list. Are the dates and the place correct and so settled that I can rely on them while planning the autumn program (both work and otherwise)? And whom should I contact about the conference program and such things? I've got a few suggestions for them... <nitpicking> The page title for <http://meeting.contextgarden.net/2012/> is "ConTeXt User Meeting 2009". This is mildly annoying as that is the text that Firefox shows as tab name and I always go "oops, wrong page" even though it isn't. I was lucky to get a fast answer - but with your code I don't get the right result: -- start your code \startmode[booklet] \setuppapersize[A5][A4,landscape] \setuparranging[2SIDE] \stopmode \starttext First page \startmode[booklet] \null \page \stopmode etc. \stoptext Thomas -- stop With your code I get: 1 2 first page of the pdf 3 4 second 5 6 third 7 8 fourth But I want to get: 1 first page of the pdf (coverpage) 2 3 second 4 5 third 6 7 fourth 8 fifth (coverpage) I know how to use with modes - but the answer must be an other. Maybe I have to explain it more clearly: on the first PDF-Page (A5) there should be only the cover-page (page 1) \setuppapersize[A5][A5] \setuparranging[1SIDE]%<- I don't know how to write it - nothing was working On the second PDF-Page there should be page 2 and page 3 \setuppapersize[A5][A4,landscape] \setuparranging[2SIDE] It must be a problem lot's of people have when they make a book with ConTeXt and want to make a second PDF-version for the Internet. Hello to everybody, why end of line is not accepted by \startluacode ... \stopluacode construct in xmlsetups? Is there a better way?
