\xmlinclude throws no error

Why does \xmlinclude does not throw an error when the file to be read is missing? It causes a mssing file to go unnoticed. In contrast \xmlprocessfile does throw an error, as expected. Hans van der Meer

So does \xmlflushcontext{#1}. In other parts of the program \xmlcontext does what it should do, thus the mkvi format seems ok. What could have happened? Some detrimental effect of the \xmlinclude? Though this command works perfectly and is nicely adaptable, in the end it does not give me what I would have liked. Perhaps my description of what I want was not clear enough. For me, both commands, \somewhere{}{}[ref] and \atpage[ref], have in common that they are imprecise when I want precision, namely when the float is not at the same page as its reference, and precise when they are in fact redundant, that is, when float and reference are on the same page, where the reader will see it at one glance, whether it is above or below. Writing, for instance, on page 20: "See example 2 on page 20" is not wrong but somehow it looks clumsy and unprofessional to me, and unworthy of ConTeXt, if I may say so. The challenge would seem "to pick ConTeXt's brain" just before the final processing run, when it knows whether float and reference will be on the same page or not. Could this perhaps be solvable by some Lua-code? Anyway, for lack of a better solution, I will for the time being refer to each float with "\in{ex.}[ref] on \at{page}[ref] \somewhere{on the previous page}{on the next page}[ref] \somewhere{above}{below}[ref]" and manually comment out, after the final processing run, what I cannot use. I live in Japan and fequently have the need to create documents in Japanese. I would like to stop using WYSIWYG type word processing and switch over to TeX based systems. I've been starting and am learning to use ConTeXt but I've still a long way to go. I want to ask if anyone has already gone through this and has a "How to publish a Japanese language document using ConTeXt" or something like that, unless it is incredibly easy to do. I've not tried it yet, but will tomorrow. I wanted to write to the group first to see if this issue has already be solved or any other input. My current platform environment is not ideal, but using Cygwin on a Japanese XP Windows box. I've not had any problems with English documents. Regards, Henman (hwitloc)

wrong footnote number in beta from today

Hi there, I'm afraid that footnote numbering in body text is wrong in latest beta (the bug was also in the two previous betas). Here you have a sample that shows the bug: \setupnotation[footnote][number=no] \setuphead[chapter][number=no] \starttext \chapter{First chapter} one\footnote{two} \section{First section} three\footnote{four} \stoptext There should be no note footnote numbering, but the body text takes the sectioning command number for the footnote references (which is obviously wrong). Bottomspace / Layout question!?

Hi there, I have a question regarding the spacing and margins of a text document. My layout is defined like this: \setuppapersize[A4][A4] \setuplayout[ topspace=1cm,header=1.5cm, backspace=3cm,cutspace=3cm, bottomspace=1cm,footer=1cm, margin=0cm ] Everything works like it is supposed to, except the "bottomspace" parameter, instead of 1cm I have 3.5cm from bottom footer to bottom rim of paper. Can anyone tell me what the problem is here? I tried a lot of other parameters, like bottom, or bottomdistance, etc. It seems ConText is ignoring my bottom definitions, what can I do to increase my textheight, or decrease my bottom height? Increase textbackground page break white space

Hey list, Some of my textbackgrounds occupy more than one page and break part way through them, as expected. Where their containing text is split at the page break, I am finding that the frame is too close to the contents. So I'd like to increase the white space of the bottom and top of the textbackground's frame and content where it splits across a page. Dear listmates, I rely on automated uppercasing and lowercasing a lot and I’m very happy with the \words and \WORD macros. But I can’t find a way to properly combine them with the “style” parameter of highlights: it breaks frames and enumerations. FLOWcharts - connector line length?

Hi, I've just fallen in love with the chart module, my first flowchart is almost done. I'll never draw these "by hand" again... Besides, it seems that the chart module forces me to do flowcharts "right", that should help with consistency and legibility. Now I just have to read a bit on how to do charts properly! I've figured out about text font and box sizes and making connections and all that, but there's one important question that I just can't seem to find the answer for: how do I adjust the connector line length? My labels just don't fit between the boxes and I'd have a whole A4 for a ny=5 flowchart, so I'd have space... (Oh, the other question is: is there a way to span a cell across several slots on the grid? If not, I can deal with *that*, the line is a lot more of a problem.) Dear gang, I have a paper done in ConTeXt that I would like to put online. I _could_ manually convert my input to markdown, but I was wondering if the xml/xhtml export options could be used to accomplish the same thing. Although I have done a lot of doc-to-context conversions via pandoc (doc->odt->markdown->context) I have never needed to go the other way till now. What would you guys suggest? Is there a way to convert context's xml/xhtml to markdown? (Note that I know little about html, css etc). One thing (bug?) I have noticed: bibliographic info gets lost in the backend export, so I end up with a lot of Xxxxxxxx (0000) etc in the output. Isn't there a tmp file the export backend can access to pick up this info? Any advice appreciated and Best wishes Idris

multitone color problem

Dear list, Presently I am working on a book that contains many musical examples, some of them rather large (even page-filling). It is difficult to predict where they will finally be placed, at least when I do not want to spoil the layout too much by forcing every example to be placed at the point where it occurs in the .tex-file. So when dicussing an example I always refer to it with \in{ex.}{ref} and \at{page}[ref]. Sometimes however the example is placed at the same page as the text discussing it. Is there any trick to adapt the reference to this situation, so that, instead of saying, for instance, "ex. 3.4 on page 12", it just says "ex. 3.4", or "ex. 3.4 below" or even "ex. 3.4 on this page"? (One imagines that in the last stage of typesetting the file ConTeXt "knows" that the reference and the referenced float will be on the same page, but I have no clue how I could use this knowledge.) Metapost/Metafun Q: using variables and "building blocks"?

Hello all, any graphic experts around who can bump me past a stupid hinder on my way to understanding MPgraphics? I'm trying to create a system of describing certain type of braiding patterns (fingerloop braiding), based on what has been used in the field before me - but they did it all manually either by pen or computer, and I just do not fancy doing 40+ patterns by hand in Inkscape, especially as my pattern recipe book keeps expanding and I'm planning on that, too. I think Metapost could be the solution, because I need simple shapes and sometimes complicated but well-regulated paths/arrows to go between them; I'm just being a clueless newbie, too much in the WYSIWYG vector graphics mode to really know what to do. Mostly with the examples in the Metafun manual I've managed to get as far as to my basic building block, two circles joined by a curve: \startMPpage path p, q, r ; p := fullcircle scaled 8mm ; q := p shifted (0cm,24mm) ; r := center p .. (12mm,12mm) .. center q ; pair pr, qr ; pr := p intersectionpoint r ; qr := q intersectionpoint r ; r := r cutbefore pr cutafter qr ; r := r cutends 0.2mm ; draw r withpen pencircle scaled 0.2mm withcolor black ; draw p withpen pencircle scaled 0.2mm withcolor black ; fill p withcolor white; draw q withpen pencircle scaled 0.2mm withcolor black ; fill q withcolor black; \stopMPpage However, I don't seem to be able to find the answers to the next questions: a) I need to be able to stack four of these on top of each other and then four mirrored ones next to them (all-in-all a 2 x 4 grid/block), and probably a 1-block space between the two columns. I realize I can do that with "shift", but should I make my single 'building block' a group, a buffer or overlay or something else? Keeping in mind that I will have to be able to draw a path/arrow on top, so I need to know where they are. (At some point I need to expand to more columns, but the number of rows is still 4 as we have humans have just four aligned fingers per hand - thumbs aren't counted - but one can add hands i.e. people to work wider braids.) b) The circles p and q can be filled with the same colour or two different colours, and each of the blocks in a pattern can have different fill colour (e.g. two totally black, two totally white, two half-and-half with either black or white on top). The pen/outline colour should stay as black, which means that I can't implement the symbol example in the Metafun manual (the smiley that is totally switched from black to red). I don't mind having different blocks for monocoloured and bicoloured versions, but it would be nice to be able to say something like \usesloop[lh,blue] for 'take a single-coloured left-hand loop in blue' instead of having to dig deeper into the MP code every time. I assume the answer is "use variables", but how? I used millimeters here because it just feels more natural to me, that's what textile crafts does (when not based on inches like quilting and scrapbooking...). The measurements won't be shown anywhere - these are graphs or pictograms, not real pictures - so I can still switch to using something else. Besides, if the "building block" approach works, there isn't that much to be changed, get the first block right and the rest can be calculated from there. Any ideas on how I can achieve the ease that surely exists somewhere there? I'll take plain Metapost or a combination of Metapost and Metafun + ConTeXt as I'll use ConTeXt anyway to achieve multi-format output with a minimum of fuss. Today's craft related metaphor: I feel just like I was staring at a messed up skein of yarn: I know that I'm now holding one of the ends, I thus can start to untangle the knot - and the more I pry loose, the less there's left to sort out. Cross-document referencing not working!

Hi ConTeXt User's, I'm struggling with cross-document referencing, but can't get it working! When I for example use \useexternaldocument[tst][test][A test external] together with \from[tst] the test.pdf file is correctly opened in Acrobat Reader. But the \in{section}[tst::crossref] doesn't open the test.pdf file at all?! The jump to the 'crossref' section doesn't seem to work! Please take a look at the two included test files. I first compile test.tex followed by the compilation of crossref.tex. Currently I use: ConTeXt ver: 2012.01.25 14:16 MKIV fmt: 2012.2.7 int: english/english. Regards, Gerard Verhaag

Non-Printing PDFs with ConTeXt

Hi all, Is there a way I can get ConTeXt to produce PDFs that are not-printable? Just as a background to my question: This is not about copyright. Rather, I am using ConTeXt to produce quality process documents. The quality management system requires that all quality process documents be "controlled", that is one must prevent folks from printing copies of their own that then keep floating around the place and cannot be retracted when a new version of the quality process document is issued. Hence, I am aiming for a paper-less scenario where everyone reads the documents on screen. Therefore, I would like to make printing impossible, or at least hard. The only one who should be able to print the document is the Document Manager; maybe the documents could be encrypted (PDF supports that, I believe), such that the Document Manager can print them knowing the password. So far, I have only seen Word and Acrobat Distiller being able to do this. Is there a way I can setup ConTeXt to do this? Or are there some command line tools, that can do that after the PDF has been produced? Any hints would be great. Thank you, Malte.

I am putting together a needed resume and learning context at the same time. What I want is or should be simple, but I am not familiar with which options to set. I am using the following, because I don't want to use any margin for some forgotten reason, just text area. I am currently using this: (abbreviated) % % relevant snippet % \definedescription[rsection][location=left,width=3.0cm,headstyle=\sc] \rsection{Education} \startitemize[5,packed] \item bozo the clown \item is here today. \stopitemize \rsection{Work\\Experience} \startitemize[5,packed] \item UCLA BoA \item LMU BSCS \stopitemize ... % % end snippet % The above is fine, except that I want the items to be level with the "resume section header". As it is now the items come out below the resume section description, like this: EDUCATION * bozo the clown * is here today WORK EXPERIENCE * UCLA BoA * LMU BSCS --------------------------------------------- % Whereas I want it to be like this: EDUCATION * bozo the clown * is here today WORK * UCLA BoA EXPERIENCE * LMU BSCS % above or below WORK EXPERIENCE * UCLA BoA * LMU BSCS % In other words I want the first item of an itemization to line up with the resume section description header's first or last line. I am thinking it might be to set someing in the "before", "after", or "command" or to set maybe one to /nop out whatever is there currently. I don't know how to find out what commands these default to, if any, but even if I knew at this point, I would still be stuck. Though I'd like to know about that to. MetaPost circular_shade Command

The command circular_shade(fullcircle scaled 4in,0,white,red); in MetaPost does not act as I think it should. It performs a gradient fill starting at the center of the circle by filling this center in white (which is expected), and changing the color as the radius/diameter changes (which is also expected), but the final radius appears to have a RGB color of about (1,0.29,0.29) which is not red (thus is unexpected) since red = (1,0,0). However, the command circular_shade(unitsquare shifted (-0.5,-0.5) scaled 4in,0,white,red); creates a gradient filled square whose center is white and whose northeast, northwest, southwest, and southeast corner are red (as somewhat expected) and thus whose east, north, west, and south tip are about (1,0.29,0.29) like the circle. I would appreciate an explanation of why this acts like it does, and (more importantly), let me know how I can get a gradient filled circle whose center gets filled with a RGB color c and outer radius color d. Clearly, circular_shade(fullcircle scaled 4in,0,c,d); does not do this. Thanks in advance, Troy Henderson

Hello, how to specify the page background for the first page only and how to start page numbering from the second page? Problem with \inmargin on \item lines

Hi everyone, I am experiencing a problem with \inmargin{some text} in \itemized lists. I am using them a lot in my documents, and it is kind of annoying. It appears that if one uses the \inmargin macro just prior to the \item macro, the in-margin text is typeset against the previous line, not the line with the \item. Minimal example. \starttext \startitemize \item This is just a normal completely innocent paragraph against which one will be able to judge the amount of indentation of the next paragraph. \inmargin{Duck}\item This paragraph has a duck inmargin comment \stopitemize \stoptext That seems fair enough and even makes sense on some level. If however, one reverses the two macros, like so: \item\inmargin{Duck} This paragraph has a duck inmargin comment the leading space just after the closing brace is actually printed. I take this to be a bug, or is this by design? The only way I can around this is to not use a space, like so: \item\inmargin{Duck}This paragraph has a duck inmargin comment But I don't find that to be a satisfying solution. After all I am using ConTeXt because I am a bit pedantic about text, even the source code in this case. Regards, Malte.

Hello, I faced with following behavior of `\setnumber' command, consider the example: <example file="ex1.tex"> \setupbodyfont[computer-modern-unicode,12pt] \definenumber[course] \setnumber[course]{3} \starttext Hello. \stoptext </example> Processing by context (ConTeXt ver: 2012.04.26 22:27 MKIV fmt: 2012.4.28 int: english/english) I get PDF with number 3 typeset on line above Hello. Is it expected behavior? If yes, how can I increase/set value for "number"-command (counter) then? P.S. I tried with commented `\setupbodyfont', all is ok. LuaTeX error after update to ubuntu 12.04

After updating to ubuntu 12.04, my shouts of joy were smothered by the following !LuaTeX error: cannot find OpenType font file for reading () ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 70 I ran mtxrun --script fonts --reload, updated to the latest context version, ran luatools --generate and context --make and still am presented with the above error message after 10-15 minutes of paralysing processing. The compiling seems to run as always, until it reaches the last page, at which point the computer freezes and takes about 10 minutes to present me with the error. The following is another snapshot of the output which I noticed for the first time: system > logs > lua: compiling /home/user/texmf-cache/luatex-cache/context/2448223e6631addb83df348d74153606/fonts/otf/andika-r.tma into /home/user/texmf-cache/luatex-cache/context/2448223e6631addb83df348d74153606/fonts/otf/andika-r.tmc fonts > otf loading > preprocessing and caching took 73.009 seconds Any ideas where to start? Uncovering Slides in a Presentation with Progress Meter

I am trying to uncover content within an itemized list, and I am using \phantom to get the desired effect. However, I would like to tweak the progress meter to consider these "pages" as the same instead of separate. Units module and unbowed letters ..

Hello ConTeXist. When I work with Units module, I gain at the output of the greek "mi" letter an italic font. It seems strange. It is so in terms of typography correctly or not? Can also be used for typing (with units module) unbowed letters? generating two additional list from notes

Hi there, I have the following minimal sample: \definenote[dict] \setupnotation[dict][number=no] \starttext \chapter{First chapter} This is my dictionary\dict{dictionary: vocabulario} command\dict{command: orden} for a complex\dict{complex: complejo} text\dict{text: texto}. \chapter{Second chapter} This\dict{this: éste} is my\dict{my: mi} dictionary command for a complex. \stoptext What I try with the \dict command is a kind of in-page dictionary for the body text. But I would like to have two automatically-generated lists from the \dict command. The first list should contain all \dict entries alphabetically ordered. The second list should contain all \dict entries but grouped by page in which they occur (having a \subject{Page [number]} title) and alphabetically ordered. I don't even know what to search. Hi there, I'm afraid that note numbering in body text is wrong in latest beta. Here you have a sample that shows the bug: \setupnotation[footnote][number=no] \setuphead[chapter][number=no] \starttext \chapter{First chapter} one\footnote{two} \section{First section} three\footnote{four} \stoptext There should be no note numbering, but the body text takes the sectioning command number for the footnote references (which is obviously wrong). Using \phantom to hide an itemized item does not reserve the (vertical) space for the item as I expect. That is, in the following example \starttext \startitemize \item Foo \phantom{\item Bar} \item Boo \stopitemize \stoptext the second item is hidden, but in fact, the space for that item has not been allocated at all. Why is this, and more importantly to me, how can I get the space allocated without using hackish transparent colors? Thanks in advance, Troy Henderson

I have been wrestling with this for hours and I'm sure there's a real easy fix. Just that it's eluding me. How can I use \definedescription to set a combination style? e.g. Below I can get a capitalized description header: \definedescription[rsection][location=left,width=broad,headstyle=cap] but, I also want it to be bold. That is a bold+cap at the same time. I tried \bf\cap as a headcommand but it didn't seem to work, as was just ignored. Regards

Rendering differences between PDF viewers

Hey list, I've noticed an unfortunate visual difference in my document's colours when rendered with Evince 2.32.0 where they come out as expected (or even with Zathura) against Adobe Reader 9.5.7. Does anyone have any clues as to why this might happen and what I might do to make it appear as intended in Adobe Reader? I wonder if this might have something to do with different renderer's different gamma correction?
