Hi all, my goal is a macro \definestates[foo][...,...] which takes a comma list and creates a monadic macro \foo[n]. \foo[n] should return either the nth item or, if (n > list length), a default. I thought the right tools were \processcommalist to generate the mapping n-><list item>, as well as \processaction to retrieve the items. But naively I didn’t consider expansion ... multi-page floats

Hi again, in my current book project there are sets of full-page graphics, where there’s first a drawing, to be printed on transparent paper, followed by a water colour picture as background, i.e. a series of right page: foreground graphic right page: background graphic The transparent pages are left out in pagination. heading and a few lines at the end of a page

Hello, sometimes I get a heading and a single line (or two lines) at the end of the page and it does not look good? Is there any way (TeX or ConTeXt) to force pagebreak before heading in this case? gnuplot with ConTeXt standalone

Hi, I just tried out the ConTeXt standalone and found out it did not work with my gnuplot files. I have been using texlive 2011, which works fine. With the "context" command from standalone, the following error occurs, ----- Error begins ----- ! Chapter layout with \structureuservariable and a makeup

Hi, I fail to use \structureuservariable to print a value on the page preceding a chapter. In the first chapter the value is empty and in the second chapter it has the value from the first one. That means, it is designed to be used with the “command” key. When used with the “command” key, the values are correct. However, the following chapter text always appears on the same page, even when a makeup or a manual page break is used. Additionally you have to mess around with the two arguments of \myChap, which easily leads to inconsistent spacing (that's why I used the “before” key in the first place). \setuphead doesn't seem to support a “setups=…” key, unfortunately. What would be the solution for this? Marco

line break after “/” (no hyphen)

I dimly recall discussion of linebreaking after “/”, but have not been able to retrieve it from the archives. Can any one point to an explanation of how to make “/” a character that will admit a following linebreak (without hyphenation) in MKII? The aim is to break “….Montreal/Ottawa”, say, into “ …..Montreal/ Ottawa…...” Alan

Hi, I uploaded a beta that has a (first) update/cleanup of the context runner script. The most important changes are - no longer an option file (jobname.opt) - no longer stub files (for xml and cld) - handling of (most of the) ctx files happens elsewhere (job control) In principle all this should go unnoticed, although one might notice the difference in the call to luatex. Me again... If a footnote doesn’t fit on the same page as its anchor, it gets placed on the next page - even if that’s a postponed one. Bistream Charter without any tfm files default font for MAPS style

Hello, Dick just asked me about a problem he experiences with some documents that he ships with MacTeX. One of them is Hans' article using MAPS style. It fails to work with both LuaTeX and pdfTeX. I think it is a very bad idea to ship two broken documents as "see, here are two documents to show you what you can(not) do with ConTeXt". And then it breaks the very first moment when people try to compile it, give up, and never test ConTeXt again. On one hand we could replace the sample documents (looking for suggestions), but I think that those Charter definitions should really be replaced or fixed. What is the best way to do that? I'm not even sure where they came from except that Hans probably used texfont.pl one day to prepare tfm files ... problem with switchtobodyfont

Hi, I decided to give the latest minimals a test (I had been using 2012.01.16, updated to 2012.06.05 today), and noticed that switchtobodyfont no longer seems to work properly. For example, adding this line works: % typescript \starttext {\switchtobodyfont[cleartype,serif]\switchtobodyfont[24pt]} % new line {\switchtobodyfont[cleartype,serif,24pt]should be serif\par} {\switchtobodyfont[cleartype,sans,24pt]should be sans\par} \stoptext The point sizes have to match for this to work. It also works to add in \setupbodyfont[cleartype]; however, this isn’t helpful if there are multiple typescripts to use in the same document. I didn’t notice any mention of this in the list (apologies if I overlooked it) so assume this is a bug? Thanks! Brian

A problem with arranging pages

Hi, I'm preparing a leaflet in ConTeXt. The leaflet is typeset in a landscape orientation on an A6 sheet, and it is going to be printed 8 times on an A3 sheet. My problems are: 1. How to achieve such an effect using \setuparranging? \setuparranging[2*8] didn't work for me. (I'm using MkIV; below is a minimal example showing my problem.) \setuppapersize[A6,landscape][A3] \setuparranging[2*8] \starttext \dorecurse{15}{\input knuth } \stoptext 2. I'd like to get crop marks, in this case short (5mm) lines showing where to cut the sheet, located near the borders, but *within* the printable area. How to achieve this? request for two typical ConTeXt documents for newbies for MacTeX

Hello, I have a tiny request. Can someone please suggest/provide a few typical ConTeXt documents, something that shows what ConTeXt can do, and/or is easy to understand at the same time. Dick includes those documents into MacTeX. Last year Hans sent a MAPS article describing LuaTeX tricks, but given some problems in MAPS style the document doesn't even typeset, but even after those problems are fixed, it would be nice to include a simple self-explanatory document showing off some functionality that is easy to achieve in ConTeXt (little & understandable code) and more difficult in pdfLaTeX. Basically anything to impress and keep a curious newbie. Mojca

Math & other issues for TL 2012

Hello, With TL freeze that is probably going to happen tomorrow (plus a few days of grace period): what is the current state of problems with math fonts, and possibly any other issues (apart from the known crash on mipsel & armel)? placecontent after section command

Hello, This example works as expected \starttext \subject{Contents} \placecontent \section{One} \section{Two} \stoptext but when I replace \subject with \section like this \starttext \section{Contents} \placecontent \section{One} \section{Two} \stoptext the contents are not printed out... Alignment in \framed

Hi, I'd like to have a big \framed with a small text, positioned at the bottom left corner. mtx-epub.lua

Hello all, while working on my ebook, I found the following issues in mtx-epub.lua. Once a successful run is done, there is no need to try the other zippers. It also gives error messages, although everything is already done. Fix is attached. Then, I got confused about the error messages appearing 3 times and found an issue in texlua of TL2011 (beta-0.70.1-2011062107) as well as the newest standalone (beta-0.70.2-2012052309). Consider the following example: print(os.execute("abcxyz")) This gives in Lua 5.2: sh: abcxyz: command not found nil exit 127 But in texlua it does: sh: abcxyz: command not found 32512 This breaks the if conditional which becomes true, although there is no abcxyz command. If there are if statements such as this one in other places, they would not work as intended either. Hi all, while trying to figure out all the functions that setupcaptions has, I stumbled trying to make stopper and separator work. MnWE: \useMPlibrary[dum] \starttext \section{One} \setupcaptions [figure] [way=bysection,prefixsegments=section,separator={A},stopper={B},suffix={C}] \startplacefigure[title={A rectangle with a caption. Not very interesting.},reference=fig1] \externalfigure[dummy][width=0.5\textwidth] \stopplacefigure \in{Figure}[fig1] \stoptext As far as I understand it, the separator changes the dot between the section and the figure number and the stopper is placed right after the figure number and used in references as well (which is different from suffix). Multiple layers question

Hi, I'd like to put a few things, placed absolutely on the page. I thought that layers are a good tool, but I can't make them do what I want. Assume that I want to have "Some text" near the top of the page and a huge "X" centered. Hello, is it possible to somehow set transluency or transparency of several objects? The example should clarify, what I need: I have a template for company documents, which has some text, lines and graphics (external pdf or png) in its footer. Now I want to make the header be less visible than the rest of the page. ebook from project: hyphenation lost

Ahoi, I never managed to get a proper eBook from a project, the content was mostly missing, a whole while even \setupbackend[export=yes] led to an error. At least that I don’t get an error any more, I’ll try to debug the missing content later. One bug I can nail down is: As soon as I add \setupbackend[export=yes] to my environment, all hyphens are lost! I.e. hyphenation takes place, but there’s no hyphen (an no space left for it). (Yesterday’s beta in suite=minimals, OSX-Intel) With \setupbackend[export=example.xml,xhtml=example.xhtml,css=example.css] in my project’s environment, I get both "example.xml" and "example.xhtml" (as well as "example- images.css" and "example-style.css"), starting with the same content (up to line 857 in my case), but the .xhtml stops after the first \stoppart, while the .xml contains all four parts. mtxrun --script epub --make example insists on copying a file named exactly "example.xhtml" to the ePub tree. Using \setupbackend[export=example.xhtml,xhtml=test.xhtml,css=example.css] both "example.xhtml" and "test.xhtml" are identical, complete *and* both copied to the epub tree (ToC refers to test.xhtml, the other is ignored). Since none of my browsers or epub readers likes this XML format, I guess I’ll need to apply a XSL transformation to create HTML. Ok... Looking at "mtx-epub.lua" I understand why none of my setups (i.e. author, title) has any effect on the output. Seems like we need to fix that manually - unzip the epub, fix it, re- pack... Ok, thanks Luigi. This is how I sorted it out, hope it may help someone. It looks like I should write a typescript and a symbol definition file, but I new to this and don't know how to do it yet. This is a workaround for the meantime: - Download the free True Type font "Zapf Dingbats BT" from http://www.ufonts.com/fonts/zapf-dingbats-bt.html - You should have got the file ufonts.com_zapf-dingbats-bt-2.ttf or an EXE file -an installer- - In windows 7 it may be installed by clicking "install" -context menu, right mouse click- - Generate Context font database: mtxrun --script fonts --reload - Check it's been read: mtxrun --script fonts --list --all --pattern=zapf* - You should have several lines like "zapfdingbatsbt zapfdingbatsitcbybtregular c:/windows/fonts/ufonts.com_zapf-dingbats-bt-2.ttf" - Finally this is how I get the characters I need: \definefont[zapfdingbats][ufonts.com_zapf-dingbats-bt-2.ttf at 10pt] \starttext Testing: {\zapfdingbats \char109} %shadowed white circle \stoptext

Dear listmates, with \switchtobodyfont I get the interface message “fonts:14” from mult-mes.lua (“bodyfont %s is defined (can better be done global)”) which is kinda hard to grep for :( Example: \definebodyfont[42pt][rm][default] \starttext \switchtobodyfont [42pt] \setupbodyfont [42pt] \stoptext Which results in: ········································································ <... /> fonts > bodyfont 42pt is defined (can better be done global) fonts > bodyfont 50.4pt is defined (can better be done global) fonts > bodyfont 40.32pt is defined (can better be done global) <... /> ········································································ (\setupbodyfont doesn’t cause it.) In order to do that, I want to have a small figure in the text with an adjacent figure caption. How can I achieve that? Process stops

I am trying to process a document I wrote in 2009 using mkii. I am modifying it to work with mkiv. When I run context mydoc.tex the process starts and after some time it stops and shows an asterisk (*) waiting for a command. I then type in "\end", and it resumes. Finally it ouputs "mydoc.pdf". There are still some things to fix (ie section numbers) but in general the document is ok. I can't see any "error" message although I got a lot of "Overfull \hbox..." and "Underfull \hbox..." messages. What can be the reason?

Zapf Dingbats font

Can the Zapf Dingbats font be used in MKIV? I can't do it work I have downloaded the symb-uni-zapf.zip<http://dl.contextgarden.net/websitesarchive/atl/tex/symb-uni-zapf.zip> file from http://dl.contextgarden.net/websitesarchive/atl/tex/. Then I unpacked it and copied the .tfm, .enc and .map files in texmf-context/fonts as well as symb-uzd.tex in texmf-context/tex/context/third I then run mtxrun --script fonts --reload and context --generate I tried usetypescriptfile[symb-uzd.tex] \usesymbols[uzd] \symbol[Unicode Shadowed Shapes][LowerRightDrop-shadowedWhiteSquare] but it doesn't work. Any ideas?

System font searching suddenly stopped

Hello, Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm a novice ConTeXt user, switching from LaTeX and without so much time :( I made some time ago a very small test document using the nice Delicious font, which I put in /usr/share/fonts/opentype/exljbris/ (under Debian). This is the straightforward document: \usemodule[simplefonts] \setmainfont[Delicious] \mainlanguage [it] \setupbodyfont [10pt] \setupheadertexts [] \starttext Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet \stoptext It worked without a problem, as the pdf remembered me. Now, I tried to compile it again, but it doesn't find the Delicious font anymore; on the contrary, it doesn't find system fonts anymore. I followed the instructions in the TeX Live Guide, ran mtxrun --script fonts --reload and context --generate again, without any change. However, I noticed that the mtxrun doesn't walk into the /usr/share/fonts directory, but only inside those from TeX Live. Have you any idea of what's happening? If you need them I can attach the output of any of these scripts. Thank you very much for your help, Marco

When the percent sign is entered straightly in the \start/stop-markdown scope, it's shown OK. how to write two or three single hyphens?

Hello, describing linux file permissions I would like to write rwx------ As I expected the hyphens are converted to two long dashes (excuse me if I missed the correct name), so I tried something like this rwx{-}{-}{-}{-}{-}{-} or rwx{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}- which works in latex, but in context I'm still getting the long dashes. MetaPost transformation

I've encountered a MetaPost issue, and since many MetaPost users also use ConTeXt (and vice-versa), I am posting this question on both lists. The command > show identity rotated 270 yscaled 0.5; outputs (0,0,0,1,-0.5,0) as expected, while the command > show identity transformed (0,0,0,1,-0.5,0); errors with --- ! Missing `)' has been inserted. <to be read again> , l.26 ^^Ishow identity transformed (0,0,0,1, -0.5,0); --- I am using MetaPost 1.504, and the problem seems to be that MetaPost does not like me using the sextuple (0,0,0,1,-0.5,0) directly, but this is the most convenient method for me to describe my transformations. Is this a bug in MetaPost, or am I not allowed to use transformations directly with sextuples? Troy Henderson

Hi, are ligatures etc. supposed to be active in verbatim commands? weird pdf bookmarks question

Hi all, I have a question about PDF bookmarks. My Document goes like this (heavily simplified): \setupinteraction[state=start] \placebookmarks[chapter,section][chapter,section] \setupinteractionscreen[option=bookmark] \starttext \chapter[item1]{Overview} \startitemize \item[item4] bla \stopitemize \chapter[item2]{Two} Greetings! \chapter[item3]{Three} I don't know \chapter{Four} Oh no. \stoptext Now, what I would really like is if the link in the bookmarks for 'Four' jumps to the first page (where the 'item4' reference target lives) instead of to the fourth page (where the chapter header lives). The question is: is this possible, and if yes, how? To further complicate things, this is an old project that uses mkii, so lua-based solutions are not helpful. Hello there. I'm messing around with imposition schemas and I think I've hit a bug or a dropped feature (but documented in the printed manual). Minimal example: \setuppapersize[A5][A4] \setuplayout[location=duplex] \starttext \dorecurse{20}{ \input knuth } \stoptext As far as I can see, the duplex location is ignored, as the page is always put in the left corner. Am I doing something wrong? The behaviour is the same with the one-year-old ConTeXt from TeXlive2011. -- Marco

Hello, while looking to include a citation in a sample document, I was wondering if the 'sample.bib' in 'standalone/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/bib/sample.bib' can be used the same way as e.g. '\input tufte', but I could not make it work. example document: \setupbibtex[database=sample,sort=author] \setuppublications[alternative=apa] \starttext document.\cite[Eijkhout1991] \placepublications[criterium=all] \stoptext Also note that the 'alternative=apa' line leads to 'publications > warning: unknown cite argument Eijkhout1991 on line \the\inputlineno' instead of the actual number. A bibliography difficulty

In my list of references, I can't get the author or title (of journal article) to print. In my .tex file, I have the following lines: \usemodule[bib] \setuppublications[alternative=ams,refcommand=num,numbering=yes] and in my .bbl file the (so far) only reference is: \startpublication[k=birn06, t=article, a=D.~Birnbache, y=1999] \author{Dieter}{}{Birnbache} \title{The Socratic method in teaching medical ethics: Potentials and limitations} \pubyear{1999} \journal{Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy} \volume{2} \issue{3} \pages{219-224} \stoppublication However, when I typeset the file, the reference list consists of [1] , Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 2, 219 (1999). I'm a little confused about all the variables, commands and parameters. So - first, what am I doing wrong? Second, are there somewhere out there some example files of bibliography usage (I learn best by seeing what other people have done, and adapting that to my own ends)? Third: can I include the references in the body of the .tex file (as you can do with LaTeX and the thebibliography environment)?
