Refreshing (synchronizing) values between Lua variables and TeX registers

Hello ConTeXist and Lua experts Is there any way to refresh values between the values stored in Lua code and TeX registers? I need to evaluating the values of TeX registers (counters, dimensions, height of boxes, etc.) during the Lua cycle. I would like in the cycle read values from the TeX registers and write back there so that all values were always synchronized. Or I need advice on how to proceed. Most of my Lua code is in a separate file in Lua function. Is there a universal way to "jump out of cycle" to TeX synchronize all values between TeX registers and Lua values (even at the cost of slowing down) and then go back into the cycle and continue? I do not write cycles using the TeX macro language, but so far I'm failing in way around it. What I need to I knowing or What I need to learn? labeltext assignment

Hi all, there appears to be something special about how the key-value list works with \setuplabeltext: ······································································· \setuplabeltext [ foo=bar, %% <- comma not allowed here? % foo=bar %% <- works ] \starttext \labeltext{foo} \stoptext ······································································· Normally the trailing comma causes no trouble, but here it won’t even compile. Deleting "-temp" files

Hi, context --purgeall deletes all temporary files (i.e., files containing "-temp-"). In fact, I had requested this feature so that the filter module does not clutter the current directory with temporary files. However, there is a bug. ConTeXt deletes all files containg "-temp" (note the missing "-" at the end). So, $ touch A1-temperature.tex $ context --purgeall gives mtx-context | purged files: A1-temperature.tex AFAICS, mtx-context.lua is correct. It contains "-temp-" as expected. So, I don't know why files containing "-temp" are deleted. Aditya

outlines don't work?

Dear list! I would like to use the "outline" feature of context. In order to be able to use attributes on xml-nodes freely, the following situations can arise: The foregroundcolor parameter gets a value: <node color="red"> correctly sets ..[foregroundcolor=\xmlatt{#1}{color}] color to red. However, in the next case the current foregroundcolor should be left as is, but reverts to black: <node> ..[foregroundcolor=] and is apparently reset to the general default. trying the following seemed the solution, but it does not work: ..[\doifnot{\xmlatt{#1}{color}}{\empty}{foregroundcolor=\xmlatt{#1}{color}}] giving in the log: {foregroundcolor=orange}' in line 16 (249>:) check > missing or ungrouped '=' after '\doifnot {}{} Putting the above \doif inside an \expanded{} does not alter the behaviour. problem with xtable

Using \startxtable gives an error, whereas \startembeddedxtable does not. What is the cause, what is the difference? Testing the changing dimensions of boxes (in cycles) via Lua

Hello ConTeXist and Lua experts. In a my Lua project I need to determine the changing dimensions of the TeX \vbox through Lua. In ConTeXt cycle, it works fine, but in the Lua cycle does not change the dimensions of the box. What am I doing wrong? Thank you. vertical alignment in the header text

widow and orphans in columns

Hello, I am trying to avoid widow and orphans in multicolumn document. My settings: \clubpenalty=10000 \widowpenalty=10000 does not any effect, and last row of the paragraph is on the only row of the second column. \externalfigure and factor=max

Hi, according to the wiki the \externalfigure key “factor” has the options: max: aspect ratio is kept, the image is scaled to the bigger (oversized) variant fit: aspect ratio is kept, the image is scaled to the smaller (fitted) variant In the following example I expect the third image to have a width of 4cm and a height of 4cm. However, both values are 3cm. On an odd page?

I must be having a bad day since I can't find the answer to this simple question on the wiki. I'm sure it's me but... How do I test if I am on an odd or even page? wrong German hyphenation for Nietzsche?

Hello, I'd need to create table with a head and a body, and with horizontal lines between rows disabled, excluding the head. directory structure

Hello, here's next of my newbie questions. I have a template for some sort of documents, lets say a report in one file as an environment. It contains also a definition for a footer with an image. I'd like to have the image on some other path than documents together with the template so I have to use \setupexternalfigures, but is it possible to specify a path independently of the env file and document file location. I mean some kind of global variable $TEMPLATES_DIR. Is it also possible to set some global path, where context will search the env files and not to use the full path in document file? Is enviroment good aproach to define templates? preventing page breaks after headings

Is there a way in MKII to ensure that there is never a page break between a heading and the following text? \setuphead[after={\page[no]}] does not seem to work without entering vertical mode before \page. But, so far, I have not found a way to enter vertical mode in after={…} that does not add interlinespace and thus place the text too far from the heading. Any suggestion or alternatives? Alan

wrong page numbers when using arranging

Hello, I am using \setuparranging and it causes me an error in referencing to pages. I want place number of page into text but this page number is wrong. As you can see in attached example, "Chapter 2" is printed on page 3 but command \at prints page 4. Could you please advise how to get the correct page number for "Chapter 2"? That is page number 3? Twittering

Hopefully, this is not (too far) OT. I'm not sure how many on the list use Twitter but if you do, you still might not be aware of the daily "TeXTip" tweets. These contain a URL to one place on the web or another that have something to do with TeX/LaTeX usage. I'm thinking it would be great to have a daily "ConTeXtTip" tweet as well. Am I the only one? I'm way too much of a ConTeXt newbie or I'd do it myself. Of course, I _could_ serve as the Point Of Context and do the actual Tweeting of URLs or tips that fit into 140 characters that were emailed to me. Portrait -> Landscape -> Portrait

Hello context-friends, I have switched from Latex to Context and my first impression of Context is: WOW :-) Unfortunately, I did not understand how to switch between landscape and portrait. footnotes location=text

Dear list, after switching to the current beta (2012.06.09 01:22) manually placed footnotes are being placed _both_ on the page and at the place specified by \placenotes. And another one: I'd like to align the footnote number with the text (instead of having it ahng into the margin). I have no clue how the compare is supposed to work but if a simple 'a' vs 'aa' document does not work while the files preflight ok it's probably an acrobat issue. frame and numbering of code snippets using vim-module

Hi context folks, using the vim module for including MATLAB-code, I noticed some annoying behavior: The frame, that I produced with your help using `\definetextbackground`, is not wide enough for the text inside, or rather the line wraps are done too late (see the attached examples!). Additionally the frame has a bottom line at the end of the page although the code snippet did not end yet. It looks as if a new box begins. Besides there should not be a new line number after a line break. Any ideas what to do? Thanks, Xenia

Hi all, after a lot of confusion I discovered that first-setup.sh is not Andy-proof. If there is a broken internet connection, the update lua process works and pushes the rsync error message very quickly out of the terminal. I propose to change the rsync line to rsync -rlptv rsync://contextgarden.net/minimals/setup/$platform/bin . || { echo "Cannot reach the repository"; exit 1; } Andy P.S. Someone already did the same to the ruby error message, it is copied a second time at the end.

Hi all, in my attempts to validate epub export from my context source, I made the following changes to back-up.lua and mtx-epub.lua 1) the actual context language is put in the epub 2) changed the OPS directory to OEBPS. The 2.0.1 Standard does not actually say that is has to have that name, but I only found examples using that one, including the sample documents in the 2.0.1 white paper. 3) changed opf:scheme to UUID, since that is used and not a ISBN number 4) added the encoding info in the opf file 5) changed the single in double-quotes in the opf file manifest. \externalfigure shows text alongside the picture

I am using \externalfigure to show a picture at the desired scale. Instead of providing a number for the width parameter I have made a definition with \def. When I run in mkiv this I get the text "4t" alongside the picture. \def\DesignSize#1{3.5cm/4*#1}% \starttext \externalfigure[hacker.jpg][width=\DesignSize{4}] \stoptext In mkii is perfect. I've also tried \define[1]\DesignSize{3.5cm/4*#1} with the same result.

[OT] git-annex: a new option for ConTeXt distribution (kickstarter campaign ends in 4 days)

Hello, a few days ago I ran across this: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/joeyh/git-annex-assistant-like-dropbox-… and made a symbolic contribution. However, this project could become one of the convenient options to distribute ConTeXt, in the sense that it would probably allow sparse checkouts from git, and we could have one huge git repository and with some basic scripting on the client side (in the same way as it is done now with rsync), user could choose to download just MKIV or just the basic fonts in contrast to a huge collection of fonts that might end up in that big repository. Basically, git could replace rsync (the rsync way could stay; this would just add an extra option). At least that is my understanding, but I admit that I don't have the full picture in front of my eyes and I would actually be grateful for the second opinion from other ([not necessarily] git) experts here. The reason why I'm writing is that by donating the following amounts, one might be able to ask for additional features if/when needed: 100 $ Help set my priorities for which features are the most important. I aim to make the git-annex assistant please you right out of the box by supporting exactly what you need. 250 $ Be my beta tester for the git-annex assistant. You will influence the project throughout, and will set my priorities for which features are the most important. and if this really becomes an important way to distribute ConTeXt, we could either make some kind of "group" donation of a few volunteers, or consider using part of ConTeXt Group funds (as ConTeXt Group was established exactly for the reason to fund projects that are important to the community). If that can help ConTeXt users switch to older version more easily, the requested amounts for funding are more than reasonable. Of course anyone is invited to make his/her own donation to git-annex independent of whether or not it will make sense for us to use it, but if there is a consensus that it would be worth using it for the distribution, we could combine our donations or make a donation from ConTeXt Group to become the official beta testers. Mojca (PS: It is not ready yet and I've been promising it for way too long already, but the first change that I will do to the distribution will be the ability to use both current approach as well as a git repository (without the option to exclude stuff), so that if something breaks in the middle of a project after ConTeXt update, it will be trivial to go back in time to any given version of ConTeXt & matching LuaTeX & fonts. At the moment going back in time requires at least a bit of creativity, for example fetching the latest working version of ConTeXt from existing unofficial Git repository etc.)

Indenting problems

I'm getting a handle on page layout and headings but there are some things I haven't figured out. 1) How does one specify they want the "outer" margin to be a different size than the "inner" margin? "Outer," of course, is the right margin on a right-hand (odd) page and the left margin on a left-hand (even) page. 2) How does one put a frame around a margin? Layers? Overlay? \framedtext? 3) Am I correct I can use the "COMMAND" parameters in \setuplayout to specify there is some text to use as a marginal in the (chapter | section) header (using \margintext, I presume)? I am working on a couple of novels I want to typeset using ConTeXt since I think it will allow me to produce what I want for typographic style much easier than using LaTeX. I'm pretty adept at using LaTeX but brand new to ConTeXt. One of _my_ problems is so many examples on the wiki seem oriented towards people setting math which could not be farther from my intended usages. (Not that I'm unfamiliar with math, I have a degree in Physics and would have had a double degree in math except for a choice to take a different course (helpful in physics) instead of one mandatory for the math degree).
