placing an xtable

Dear list, I'd like to place a table centered (both horizontally and vertically) on an empty page. Is there no option from the xtable itself to achieve that? Vertically Aligning inmargin Text to Figure

Hi, I need to associate a bit of text with a figure in a book. The text is not---and cannot be---the figure caption (it's providing some explanation with respect to some labels in the figure). I need the text to be vertically aligned with the top of the figure. I have attached the resulting PDF for illustration purposes (is that okay on this mailing list? It's very small). "texexec" displays a font somehow similar to Fraktur, but not a very nice one and much to broad; and it seems to have no different "s" (one inner-word and one word-end or syllable-end "s") as needed in Fraktur. And, my "texexec" doesn't know anything about umlauts and sharp s. Whereas my "context" (translating the same program), dosn't know Fraktur, but knows umlauts. So I'm always using both of them, enjoying the partial success of both, though I read somewhere, it should be better using "texexec". Well, a very nice Fraktur font is Yannis Haralambous' "yfrak" in his "yfont" series, the nicest one I've found until now. Could you please help me to formulate the correct commands to use a "nice" Fraktur font, be it "yfrak" or another one? But please remember, Context is still rather confusing to me. two simple questions on presentations

Dear list, sorry for asking the following questions, but I wasn't able to find the answers on the reference manual, the wiki or the command list. I wanted to make some cards (and I'm interested also in this features for presentations) that have the following features: -Everything in the cards is centered both horizontally and vertically. \setupalign[lohi] doesn't work outside frames or similar and \setupalign[middle] centers only horizontally. -Page background colors that can be changed from a given point to the rest of the document or the next page background color change. \setupbackgrounds[page][background=color, backgroundcolor=blue] sets the background color for all pages. Halt ConTeXt on Certain Warnings/Errors

Hi all, Is there are way I can have ConTeXt halt on particular warnings or errors? In particular, I like it to spit the dummy when it finds an unknown reference. Otherwise, I end up with the unknown references in the document that I sometimes don't find until much later. At the moment I grep for "reference" when I run context, as in context *.tex | grep reference ...but I thought there might be some more elegant way to do this. Hans, Thankyou for your suggestion of using the \usereferences tag to reference formulas in another document. This is a good solution. Using the \usereferences tag works if I label formulas 'bytext' rather than by 'bysection' and turn off chapter prefixes in test1.tex using the following at the start of the document: \setupformulae[way=bytext,prefixsegments=None] I would really prefer to maintain numbering by section, but to do this, I need test2.tex to show external references in the same way as test1.tex (by including the section number in front of the equation number). Is there a way to do this at present? embedding ConTeXt code in an xtable

I am now using xtable to have an XMLish document to store a table. How I can embed ConTeXt code like $\Delta{}N_{\text{test}}$ in the external XML file file with the table? In other words, having mathematical notiation in the table header? I tried various things such as: \expanded{\xmlflush{#1}}

Output from Context standalone (actual version) has wrong utf-8 encoding

Hi list rendering a very easy formula with greek text in it produces a pdf-document that has not a valid utf-8 string. I use evince for displaying pdfs under ubuntu linux. The document appears correctly on the screen but stops printing after a greek letter in a formula. The error-report says: Internal Error: cairo context error: input string not valid UTF-8 The same document compiled in live.contextgarden.net doesn't produce a mistake and can be printed with evince. I can still print the document correctly using 'lpr name.pdf', so it's not a big problem for me. But I don't know if that could be a problem for someone else. Hebrew vowel placement in ConTeXt.

I am new to ConTeXt and very impressed. Much thanks to Hans Hagen and Idris Samawi Hamid for an excellent introduction. I am using the Hebrew Ezra SIL Hebrew Unicode Fonts. My question concerns the placement of the Hebrew vowel points ("niqqud"). For most letters, the vowel points are placed too far to the left, as opposed to centered directly under the letter. A short example follows. For some of the letters, e.g., "Hebrew Letter Alef With Qamats" (kind of a t-shaped vowel underneath the alef), the vowel is correctly centered. For others it appears incorrectly to the left. (This may be connected with whether the letter+vowel is packaged as a single character or whether it is being composed on the fly.) I have used the same font in several predecessor programs (the makor package for lamed and the cjhebrew package for LaTeX) and the vowels points are placed correctly. Please let me know if you have any suggestions regarding adjusting the placement of the vowel points. (ConTeXt version info is at the end of the message.) I am using the latest TeXLive update version of MKIV (used tlmgr to update). In a compile time message Context says that it doesn't like: " ! Learning ConTeXt from the Ground Up

Hello Everyone, I have been using ConTeXt for over a year now and worked out how to do most things I need to do. Every now and then, though, I need to do something that I cannot find any information about and in most cases I post a question here on the forum. I have received great help here over the months and like to thank everyone who took the time to answer my questions. The other day, however, I had a problem, posted a message here, got an answer and the answer did not quite work; I went back to the forum, got more help... In the process I realised that I should have been able to work this out myself; I was not even able to tweak the first answer and make it work. I am an IT engineer myself, but with little time (I guess I am not unique here) and even less experience in TeX. I guess what I am saying is, that I would like to gain a much deeper understanding of ConTeXt which will allow me to "program" in ConTeXt rather than just using the documented command. To gather information about ConTeXt I have - read the ConTeXt Reference Manual (http://pmrb.free.fr/contextref.pdf) - bought a couple of the published books by Hans Hagen - started reading the "TeX book" by Donald Knuth I have even briefly flirted with the idea of switching to LaTeX mainly because it would mean having a lot more literature and a broader community at my disposal. However, I just prefer the command structure and output of ConTeXt. Can anyone relate to my problem? Am I on the right track? What else should I be doing or reading to really break into ConTeXt? Alignment of inmframed

\inmframed (and by extension \definemathframed[...][location=low,...]) does not get the right vertical space. For example, \starttext \startformula \ln (1+x) = \inmframed{x - {\frac {x^2}{2}}} + \frac{x^3}{3}-\cdots. \stopformula \stoptext Note that the two fractions do not align at the horizontal bar. I'm trying to typeset a book. It has two columns, and some floating diagrams. My problem is that the floats aren't going where I want them to and I can't work out how to fix it. UWIN?

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried porting ConTeXt to the UWIN environment? UWIN is very much like cygwin in being a "Unix on Windows" environment. However, it is not based on GNU but is Real Unix code from AT&T Bell Labs. Many of the utilities are simply the latest versions of the original Version 7 Unix utilities, others are from BSD, System III and System V. The shell is genuine ksh93, not pdksh or bash/dash. There is a POSIX dll to provide a complete POSIX api. This is AT&T's own, not the "POSIX subsystem" from Microsoft. The cc command is a wrapper for Visual C, gcc or whatever you have. Instead of the usual autoconf..configure..make..make install dance you can use nmake. I can run the usual Windows context with a bit of fiddling but it would be nice to use the regular setuptex shell script et. al. -- Bill Meahan Westland, Michigan

MOving from MkII to MkIV / EPUB

Hello folks, I have a ConTeXt Project for a small and simple book, that has the 'basic example' project structure with .../images, .../chapters, .../products etc. I use a Makefile to comppile the book when in the .../chapters directory, as attached below. I use "texexec --pdf" and probably ConTeXt MkII from the MacTeX 2012 distribution. I'd like to make an EPUB from this book as well. I suspect that means going over to LuaTeX/MkIV and doing extra stuff. I got lost in the ConTeXt documentation (for as much as there is, old and new) and would appreciate an instruction on how to do this that does not suppose I am a ConTeXt wizard who is doing stuff like this daily. Is there such a thing? Typefaces ... how does this work?

I want to adjust my document to have Lucida as main typeface, but with brief passages (a few words at most) in a typeface that has the IPA glyphs like Gentium. I've skimmed the manual and the ConTeXt garden Wiki but I do not yet understand which commands I should use where and with which options to achieve this -- preferably in a concise way. Could someone please explain and point out what most current documentation I should read and in which order to fully understand how to work with typography in ConTexT? (Obviously I am not a typographer or typesetter, I just write documents.) I am in a hurry now to complete my document so I would appreciate concrete hints to help with my current need. Still, I am interested to learn a lot about this functionality in the long term.
