No indentation after macro

footnotes on wrong page

What is the setting that forces ConTeXt to keep footnotes on the page where they are called? In the following example, \setupinteraction[state=start] \setupnotation[footnote][interaction=yes,way=bytext] \setupnotation[footnote][split=verystrict] \starttext \dorecurse{50}{some text\footnote{a footnote} } \stoptext the call for note 42 and the note itself are on different pages. I realize that this may be an extreme case, but, regrettably, that is what I have in a review that I am typesetting. Alan

About Hyphenation

Hi List, I am very grateful with you all. Thanks for all the teaching. Sorry if the message is too long. I have read in several places that the commands \doublehyphendemerits and \finalhyphendemerits are not a "real" way of dealing with the design issue of too many hyphens in a row and/or avoiding a hyphen at the end of a page. I have found that \doublehyphendemerits just avoids TWO hyphens in a row, but not three or four, etc., and \finalhyphendemerits just doesn't work. I have read the code, the wiki, the mail list, and the manuals, but with no success yet. However, this obstacle is frustrating that dream in part. I know that you may say "this hyphenation issue is a matter of taste! is not important!" but all the publishers I have worked with in the last 15 years have emphasized that rule over and over again. I'm Colombian, so, I design books mainly in spanish, and in spanish editions is a very common rule to avoid more than 2 hyphens in a row. I understand that there are similar rules in french, and I have read some discussions about it, but mostly the thread finishes with something similar to "use ragged right align and forget hyphens" (see http://www.mail-archive.com/ntg-context@ntg.nl/msg68899.html) So, questions are: 1. Is there any definitive way of avoiding 2 or more hyphens on a row AND hyphens at the end of a page? 2. If is not, and it seems that is not (see http://latex-community.org/know-how/latex/55-latex-general/475-e-tex#line-b…) how do you manage? Do you just let hyphens be? Do you avoid hyphens using \unhyphenated or \mbox by hand? No problem, if it's the standard solution, but I think there should be some mechanism to avoid (n+) hyphens on a row, something like \maxadjhyphens[2]. Is this impossible / too difficult? If it is, I'm sorry for bothering you. I just really want to work with ConTeXt. I have done a couple books for myself, to learn, but I want to take this into production, and this single issue, so insignificant you may see it, is very important for me, and I'm sure that other designers would find it very important too. INstalling the context version of TeX distro.

Normally I just use TeXlive as my TeX distro for Context as well as everything else. However I thought I would play with the Context version for educational purposes. It is perhaps more up to date than TeXlive 2013. I downloaded the zip file and unzipped it. Now what? Also I copied the zip file to my Windows partition (currently XP but I can up it to Win 7 if desirable for Context. I have both XP and Win 7 install disks.) Again I need install directions. If there is an up-to-date guide to this process just give me its name. vertical bar spacing in Antykwa-Poltawskiego

I am using Antykwa-Poltawskiego to set a French text that includes ancient Greek. In the Greek text, there is a vertical bar (to mark the end of a column). The custom is to set the spacing about the bar so that (a) when the bar is inside a word, the bar appears as a normal character (b) when the bar is between words, the bar has an emspace on either side. The problem is that Antykwa-Poltawskiego defines the vertical bar with spaces on either side. Is there a way to adjust this so that the vertical bar appears as it should in Greek text—and to do this without clobbering the French punctuation or getting weird effects when the bar is at the end of a line? For instance, is there a way to combine rules for character spacing so that the second overrules the first only when they are in conflict? Alan

mixing English and Hebrew

Dear list, I was asked how to mix l2r and r2l scripts on the same document. (Just in case, I have no idea what the Hebrew text below means.) I have two questions: Since Hebrew (both the language and the script) are written from right to left, shouldn’t it be r2l alignment turned on by default when the script or language were selected in the OpenType features? Hello, how to join to paragraphs /lines, such that they are not broken on to pages? \starttext \dorecurse{30}{First line.\\ Second line.\\} \stoptext You see that the last "First line" on the first page is alone, the "Second line" comes on the next page, of course correct in this example. I could join them now with "\testpage[2]", but is there another way, without counting lines? And without invisible frames? Just like an automatic "testpage", which knows how many lines it must have. Numbering enumerations in mkiv

Hello, the mechanism for how to share the numbering of enumerations seems to have changed from mkii to mkiv. I used the following code to typeset theorems and lemmata in mkii. problem with setuptex

Hi all, especially Mojca, I guess, I have a somewhat bizarre problem with the setuptex script under the latest Fedora and zsh (version 5.02). Here's what happens: source ~/context/tex/setuptex "/mnt/shared/context/tex" is not a valid TEXROOT path. (There is no file "/mnt/shared/context/tex/texmf/tex/plain/base/plain.tex") provide a proper tex root (like '. setuptex /something/tex') The script works under bash; the error under Fedora is the same on two different computers, but I don't know if any other linux distribution has the same version of zsh. Can anyone else test and see if they have similar problems with zsh? All best Thomas

overlay lifts image slightly

still a bug with compressed linenotes and no compressseparator

Dear Hans, many thanks for the latest beta, that fixes the line range numbering. I’m afraid there are still two issues with compressed linenotes when the compressseparator is missing. Having linenotes from the same line separated with only blank space is a standard practice in critical editions. I’m not a philologist and I don’t have access to a library on a regular basis. If samples from http://context.aanhet.net/epen2007/share/idris/cr-apparatus.pdf are allowed, from three possible examples, figures 4.2 and 4.4 only include blank space as separator for “compressed” linenotes and figure 4.6 includes a separator (||). Here a sample (I know there is no hyphenation on body text) that shows the two issues I’m having problems with: \setuppapersize[A6] \setuppagenumbering[location=,] \definelinenote[Critico] \setupnote[Critico][paragraph=yes] \setupnotation[Critico][alternative=serried, compress=yes, compressseparator=, width=broad] \newcounter\Contadorvar \def\apcritico#1#2{\increment\Contadorvar% \startCritico[Varia:\Contadorvar]{#2}#1% \stopCritico[Varia:\Contadorvar]} \starttext \startlinenumbering \dorecurse{22}{\apcritico{origin}{variant} \apcritico{not original,}{variant} } \stoplinenumbering \stoptext If compressseparator is suppressed (such as in the sample), the space before the missing separator is removed, but the space after the separator remains. This default is buggy when the compressed linenote starts at the beginning of the line (as it is the case on lines 4-9 in the apparatus). But even with linenotes starting at other places in the critical apparatus, there is another issue: compressed linenotes have more blank space before than uncompressed ones. I think this might be visually misleading in some cases. I think there is a simple way to solve both issues: if compressseparator is set to none, the space after should be removed in all cases. revert to an older install not working?

Dear list, after the missing file in the latest beta, I wanted to revert the installation back to previous beta (2013.07.14). I tried it with the following command: ./first-setup.sh --context=2013.07.14 But it gives the following error: rsync: change_dir "/current/context/2013.07.14" (in minimals) failed: No such file or directory (2) Am I missing something or revert to an older install is disabled? Installing context on a web server

Hello, I am using Context to produce PDF out of a website. It works well on my local machine, but I can't seem to install Context system-wise on my server. I first installed Context as a single-user on the server with first-setup.sh. Then I realized I needed Context to be accessed by any user. So I tried to run first-setup.sh in /opt/context as root. Error using xtable

Short notice: Gentium in distribution

Hi, Gentium fonts have been updated recently, but I forgot to fix the scripts in distribution (arghhhh, CTAN now prevents TDS, so it took me a while to reconstruct it) and today's updates deleted the old fonts. I fixed that now, but please let me know if there are any problems left. (I left the Type1 fonts out of ConTeXt distribution). Mojca

weird interaction in linenotes command (again)

Dear list, sorry for posting this again, but I don’t know how to solve this issue and I really need your help. I have the following sample: \setuppapersize[A6] \newcounter\LineNote \setupnote[linenote][paragraph=yes] \setupnotation[linenote][alternative=serried] \define[2]\Variant {\increment\LineNote \startlinenote[LineNote:\LineNote]{#2}#1% \stoplinenote[LineNote:\LineNote]} \starttext \startlinenumbering \dorecurse{10}{\Variant{\showhyphens{legislation}not original}{variant} \Variant{\showhyphens{legibility}origin} {variants} } \stoplinenumbering \stoptext The problem here is that \Variant gets always #1 not hyphenated, although \showhyphens works fine in that argument. The cause of this is the \increment command within \Variant. I don’t know why this happens, but the increment is required by \Variant to make sense at all. I guess this might be a bug. Thank you very much; this was again very helpful. I am still having a problem with left-justifying the date: \setupletterlayer[reference][alternative=c] does not properly left-justify the date; the date is towards the left but is aligned several mm to the right of the other text. (This was true on the mwe that Wolfgang sent.) BTW are the values for the "alternative" key (example, e, c, etc.) documented somewhere? Thank you again. Of course I can correct that with your suggestion, but thats not the topic. These big font sentences are only examples for "elements", which are not set on the grid. The question is: How to achieve same distances between every normal text (set on the grid) and the "elements" (not set on the grid)? It is clear that not all before-distances and all after-distances respectivley can be the same simulatously, thats trivial. But at least all before-distances (so the distance between the text and the elements, in this order!) should be the same in the complete book. How to?
