OT: Reflections on usability ConTeXt for typesetting of mathematics

Hello ConTeXist. I am very sorry for this OFF TOPIC contribution. For writing of this text led me several hours of searching on internet. I was looking for ways to typing of non-elementary math in ConTeXt Already a long time I use ConTeXt typesetting lot of different things and I am very satisfied. In the many things, of which I typed, was maths represented only marginally and minimally. Now I need to type some mathematics (at secondary school level) and I found that I came across borders of my knowledge of ConTeXt, or on possibilities of ConTeXt for typesetting of mathematics. I do not in any way call into question the ability of ConTeXt typesetting mathematics, although I think that who wants to type mathematics then use LaTeX. I want find experience of users of ConTeXt for real using of ConTeXt for typesetting of mathematics. I wonder how users use possible math modules (exist anything?) to be usable results. I have a few questions: 0. Do you think that this is only a problem for beginners of ConText or it is a general problem of ConTeXt? 1. How many of ConTeXt users use this tool for typesetting of non-elementary mathematics? 2. Are you satisfied with the results, which produces ConTeXt (thinking in the field of mathematics rate)? 3. What things do you need to have in ConTeXt study that one could bet mathematics at a reasonable level? 4. Is ConTeXt able to substitute LaTeX to typesetting of math (e.g. in the future)? 5. Can you think of any more questions that should be here? I hope that my question will help other beginners who would like to typing of mathematics use ConText - this unique and useful tool. textwidth in (simple)columns

With \startcolumn[n=2] the \textwidth appears as the columnwidth, but with \startsimplecolumns[n=2] it stays the full breadth of the page. Is there a remedy? Changing to \startcolumns is no option because it does not work inside \startframedtext, and \startboxedcolumns is no option because I found cases where (apparently with a clear cause) sometimes material disappeared (I posted here a remark on this sometime ago) Hans van der Meer

suggestion on [option=TEX]

Hi Hans, I have the following sample: \setuptyping[option=TEX] \starttext \starttyping \input zapf % knuth \stoptyping \stoptext The percent character is in bold font and gray color, but the rest of the commented text isn’t. My suggestion would be to apply the same color and font of the percent character to the rest of the comment. So it is easier to see that the text is a comment. And I think coloring the whole commented text (not only the percent character) is the normal practice in all text editors (if comments are colored at all). state=high vs state=empty for headers and footers

If one uses \setuplayout[header][text][frame=on] then the frame is drawn on pages with header=empty but not drawn on pages with header=high. By default, the 'empty' pagebreak method (in page-txt.mkvi) sets the header and footer state to empty rather than high. This means that header frames are drawn on empty pages. For example, see attached file. getting text outside cropmarks to work

Hello, Under mkii we used to have a running footer that appeared below the crop marks. Under mkiv I can't get that to work. The MWE I'm trying (with ConTeXt mkiv from the TeXLive 2013 CD): \def\TopText { Top Text } \def\BottomText { Bottom Text } \def\pagecutmarksymbol {\the\realpageno} \def\pagecutmarklength {.5cm} \let\pagecutmarktoptext \TopText \let\pagecutmarkbottomtext \BottomText \setuplayout[marking=text] %\setuplayout[marking=on] \starttext \input knuth \stoptext Code like this used to work for us in mkii. I tried it with both marking=text and marking=on, but in either case, I get neither crop marks nor the text. (In our real document, I was able to get crop marks with [marking=on]. But not text. And haven't figured out how to get crop marks in a MWE.) (Combined)lists, two questions

Dear all, I have a few issues with the Table of Contents and with the List of Figures 1 How can one force a page break after some section. In my present setup I have a Chapter 4, sitting lonely at the bottom of the first page of the ToC, with its sections on the next page. I have tried \completecontent[3.7], as described on p. 53 of "ConTeXt an excursion", but that does not work for me (I'm on mkiv). What can be done about it? 2 My list of figures gives the complete captions, some of which are long. Those exceeding their allotted space break off, which is OK, but there are some that run up against the page number, which is ugly and unclear. What can I do the create a little more space between caption and page number? In general, of most if not all of the 38 possible arguments for \setuplist, as shown on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/, I do not know what they do and how they can be used. Unfortunately, also "ConTeXt an excursion" is very brief on this subject. Is there any place where I can find more information? Thanks in advance for ay advice. Best regards, Robert Blackstone

Hello, I want to organize my book as follow: book/ env_book.tex prd_book.tex chapters/ chap_1.tex chap_1/ intro.tex chap_2.tex chap_2/ intro.tex chap_3.tex chap_3/ intro.tex chap_4.tex chap_4/ intro.tex Here is the contents of my texfiles: env_book.tex: \startenvironment env_book \usepath[{chapters}] \stopenvironment prd_book.tex: \environment env_book \startproduct book \startchapter[title=Chapter 1] \component chap_1 \stopchapter \startchapter[title=Chapter 2] \component chap_2 \stopchapter \startchapter[title=Chapter 3] \component chap_3 \stopchapter \startchapter[title=Chapter 4] \component chap_4 \stopchapter \stopproduct chap_1.tex \usepath[{chapters/chap_1}] \startcomponent chap_1 \component intro \stopcomponent chap_2.tex \usepath[{chapters/chap_2}] \startcomponent chap_2 \component intro \stopcomponent and so on. The problem is that only text of first introduction is used. I want to avoid renaming all introduction files to intro_1.tex intro_2.tex etc because they are already differentiated by their folder. Is it possible ? The aim is also to have folders for sections and images for each chapter. I attached the project structure. Thank you,

Additionally, I'd like to keep that divider with the previous content (paragraph). In this case AFAIK \testpage[n] cannot be used directly in the divider definition as it breaks the page at position of this command. I'd like to express rather: If there is no space for three lines, break the page, but grab few previous lines (at least 2) together with me (according to orphan/widow settings). The current behaviour can be demonstrated using this example: \startsetups[grid][mypenalties] \setdefaultpenalties \setpenalties\widowpenalties{2}{10000} \setpenalties\clubpenalties {2}{10000} \stopsetups \setuplayout[grid=yes, setups=mypenalties] \showgrid \showlayoutcomponents \starttext \blank[force, 30*line] \input{tufte} \blank[4mm]\middlealigned{\hl[4]}\blank[6mm] \stoptext In my case the divider is used also to emphasise Chapter ends - so it is very often the last element one the page and there is no need to check also the space which follows (whether next lines will fit or not). Divider in grid environment

Dear All, I'd like to use a divider between certain paragraphs. As I want to keep all the lines on the grid so it should have a height = N x line height. As \hl renders the line on baseline, I have to tweek the space before/after using the 'blank' command to keep the horizontal line in the +/- middle: \setuplayout[grid=yes] \showgrid \showlayoutcomponents \starttext \input{ward} \blank[4mm]\middlealigned{\hl[4]}\blank[6mm] \input{ward} \stoptext But this solution requires adjustments for different fonts or font sizes... It has given me exactly what I needed. In fact one "\startmakeup[standard] - \stopmakeup"-pair, with is dedication-text, was sufficient for my doublesided document. Additional unnumbered pages behind a title page

Dear list, For a Thesis, doublesided, I need three unnumbered pages behind the Title-page, the second of which contains only a dedication "To the memory of A". For the Title-page I use standardmakeup but ConTeXt apparently does not like me to add a second .tex-file with standardmakeup. How can I manage to accomplish this in a way worthy of ConTeXt? Thanks in advance for any advice Best regards, Robert Blackstone (I did find a hack, consisting of introducing between the Title-page and the FrontMatter a .tex-file, beginning with \setuppagenumber[state=stop], of which the second page is filled with stack of empty framed textboxes with their frames off. It does work somehow but I cannot believe that it is the right method.)

Hi Wolfgang, I have the following code: \definefontfeature[fakeslanted][slant=.25] \definefontfamily[mainface][serif][TeX Gyre Pagella][slantedfont={* Regular},sl=features:fakeslanted] \setupbodyfont[mainface] \starttext This is {\em slanted}. \stoptext But I don’t know how to define "slantedfont={* Regular}" with the new syntax. "sl=style:tf" or "sl=style:regular" don’t work (the italic font is the slanted one). Which is the right way to do it in the new version of simplefonts? BTW, I think I should update the simplefonts article in the wiki to add the new syntax. After reading the font-sel.mkvi file, I have two questions: Which are the option keys that come before a colon? Hat with \widehat is not satisfactory

Dear list, I think the symbol of the angles is too close to the letters. Is it possible to change this ? \enablemode[pxmath] \setupbodyfont[palatino,12pt] \starttext \startformula \sin\widehat{PAM} =\frac{AM}{PA}=\frac{\frac{\sqrt{2}}{4}}{\frac{\sqrt{6}}{2}}=\frac{\sqrt{2}}{4}\times\frac{2}{\sqrt{6}}=\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\times\frac{1}{\sqrt{6}}=\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}. \stopformula \stoptext Thank you.
