Dear gang, Thinking of present and future documents (maximum flexibility in converting from format to format), I'm moving from the standard {\em text} to something like \definehighlight[emph][style=italic]. Here's the question: Does ConTeXt contain some default highlights that need not be defined by the user? It seems that some of the basic ones should have presets. This helps with at least two things: 1. Document portability (independent of a given style or env file); 2. Editor setups. As an example of the latter: If I select text in Notepad++ I can do Right-Click -> ConTeXt Typography -> Emphasize where Emphasize is defined as {\em } Right now, whenever I release an update to the N++ editor package (now years overdue, I know) any user can depend upon this right-click feature. But if I define \definehighlight[emph][style=italic] and set up the editor to implement it; then there is no guarantee that other users will use the same definition. As issues of conversion from one format to another become ever more urgent and common, it makes more sense to use tagged and exportable versions of the common typographical functions and to standardize a few. So my suggestion is that we develop a set of default or "official" highlights for commonly used cases, with a list made available somewhere such as the wiki. Perhaps redefine some existing 1-parameter typography commands (\emph, \bold, \scap, etc.) as highlights. Some of these should be kept short (such as \emph, \bold) given their very frequent use. Coupling mechanism: how to use it…

Hi Hans, After struggling to set up a complex structure with \defineblocks in which I wish to have a series of exercises (with a certain number of questions) and hints (some questions have no hints, ans some exercises have no hints), and finally solutions (again some questions have no answers, and some exercises don’t have solutions), I remembered that a few years ago you talked about a coupling mechanism in mkiv. As a matter of fact in the file strc-enu.mkvi this coupling mechanism is introduced but I didn’t figure out how to adapt it to my needs, that is to the situation I just described. Is there an example which can help understand how to use it? Is it possible to submit a feature request (for instance automatic interactions between each component, say exercise, its hint and its solution), with a reasonable amount of effort on your part to have it? How to increment a counter

Hi all, I have a counter in an itemize environment which I need to increment by using \incrementcounter[NameOfTheCounter] However this does not work in the following example, maybe due to the use of blocks, or some other reason. I define two blocks, one for exercises, one for the solutions. Then in each exercise I have a certain number of questions, presented with an itemgroup named Questions. Analogously I have an itemgroup named Answers, which appear in the solution to an exercise. Now my problem is that some questions don’t have an answer included (for instance they are too easy…) and I need to increment the counter by saying \incrementcounter[Answers] But this does not work, for an unknown reason. Setup for appendices: a bunch of questions

Hello, I need a tiny bit of help with properly setting up the appendices. 1.) I would like to include both chapters and titles. Is this the proper way to go? (It took me a while to figure out how to include the titles at all.) \setuphead [title] [incrementnumber=list] \placelist [title,chapter,section] [criterium=all,alternative=c] But why is there less space in front of a \title{...} in TOC than in front of a \chapter{...}? 2.) How can I define a different width for appendices in TOC (to reserve enough space for the word "Appendix")? I use \setuplist [section] [width=10mm,numberstyle=\os\bf,pagestyle=\os,label=yes] but I would like to use "width=27mm" for sections inside \startappendices ... \stopappendices than for regular sections. Is there any workaround? 3.) For appendices I want to set \setuphead [chapter] [number=no] \setuphead [section] [page=yes,sectionsegments=section,conversion=Character,sectionstopper=:] without affecting regular sections and chapters. Is it possible to do this on top of the document (or in the layout) as opposed to changing the settings just before appendices start? I would like to avoid messing up with such settings in the middle of the document. I tried to play with \defineconversionset and \setupsectionblock [appendix] [sectionconversionset=...] but I'm unable to understand how these commands work exactly. How to use \setuplist for formatting a chapter entry?

Hello list, I have one little problem that I need to solve to finish my work on a document. I want to format a list entry for the TOC for chapters like this: "Hoofdstuk #1 -- #2 . . . . . . . . #3" Where #1 is the chapter number, #2 is the title and #3 the page number where the chapter begins. Of course the ". . . " entry is just like the normal cases where the dots fill the rest of the line. I have an *almost* correct solution using numbercommand and setting the width for the title, but this leaves a gap between the formatted chapter number and the title, because "chapter 9" and "chapter 10" don't take the same width. So, some other solution is needed. I tried using the command option, which needs 3 arguments, but could not get it to work. The line around each such box has rounded corners. Of course, language of the cited publication. Nothing else makes sense at all. This field is also to be used for hyphenation of the title field. BUT, the author of the TeX document must control and decide if the bibliography will use an eventual language= field or rather use the language rule in vigor for the TeX document; alternately, he/she could impose a particular language for the rendering of a particular dataset. Thomas has argued this point. The explicit parsing of "vons" or particles gives control for the sorting of author names. It is not so complicated: if treated as a particle or von, it does not enter into the sorting; if treated as intimately part of the surname (often, but not always, the case for post-revolution names in French, for example) then it does enter into the sorting. German is the only case that I know where the "von" gets placed after the first names. Here, one must not abbreviate the von, of course, as in: "Laue, M. V." - and I have seen this published!! Nor do I want to see: "von Laue, M." However, to be correct, some publications might appear as "Laue, M." Now, say that I want to cite Laue's work published in English (as well as one or more of his references published in German). Clearly this real case will cause grief. I could set language=german for all of his work, but then how are the titles to be hyphenated (and what about quotation marks if the style uses them)? This is why Hans asks if we should optionally parse 5 part author names. font search path and subfolders

In my Linux home folder I have the usual “~/.fonts/” folder in which I have put subfolders “~/.fonts/opentype/” and “~/.fonts/truetype/”. Inside those subfolders I would like font families to have their own subfolders. When I set the font search path by running export OSFONTDIR="/usr/local/share/fonts;$HOME/.fonts/opentype;$HOME/.fonts/truetype" from the command line followed by mtxrun --script fonts --reload only the fonts in the /truetype/ subfolders are recognised. This means I have to put all my opentype fonts directly into the /opentype/ folder. On Stackexchange I found a solution http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/209705/context-system-font-search-pa… which says that putting “//” after the folder made the search recursive, but neither export OSFONTDIR="/usr/local/share/fonts//;$HOME/.fonts/opentype//;$HOME/.fonts/truetype//" nor export OSFONTDIR="/usr/local/share/fonts//;$HOME/.fonts//" works for me. What am I missing? (Typo maybe?) Being able to put opentype font families into subfolders as well would be a great help to keep a clear view of all my fonts. Greetings Jörg

Grey background for pages belonging to last section of every chapter

Hello list, For the last section of every chapter I want a grey background for the text, which otherwise should look the same as every other section, except that it starts on a new page (I can set that by defining my own section command). The last section summarizes the chapter. My current implementation is using a frame: \defineframed[achtergrond] [frame=off, background=color, backgroundcolor=gray, width=fit, height=fit, offset=2ex, align={flushleft,nothyphenated,verytolerant}] And use it as: \achtergrond{ \section{Last section} \startitemize[n] \item ... \stopitemize } But this does not accomodate sections longer then a page. And I can't place \page command in the middle of an itemize, and using \stopitemize, \startitemize[continue] makes the pages vary in sizes. Is there some way to achieve the desired effect (grey background behind the text, and otherwise page layour identical to other sections) without the problem that text exceeds the page size? A note on Arabic names in bibliographies and indices

Dear Syndicate, The current bibliography handler uses the following for authors: \type{\author[junior]{firstnames}[inits]{von}{surname}} Now in Arabic we have something similar to the 'von' field: the definite article 'al-', 'ibn', etc. Just as with 'von' we want to ignore them in the alphabetical sorting. [On the other hand, ConTeXt cannot currently sort its own bbl files alphabetically]. See the linked picture for a real-life example (the top-right of the page contains both Dutch and Arabic examples): https://www.dropbox.com/s/rnimlactrlqz6ak/arabic-dutch-bib.jpg?dl=0 Now the {von} field works for these Arabic prefixes, but there is an issue: There can be no space between 'al-' and what follows (e.g. 'al-Haq'). But the {von} field by default adds a space (von Corbin). So what to do? But in the upcoming bib module we may want a better solution so that bbl files can be more consistent and portable. 2UP Arranging

Using 2UP the rightmargin on odd (recto) pages becomes the leftmargin on even (verso) pages. Is there an option for 2UP doublesided to be printed and folded where the rightmargin is always on the righthand side of each ‘page’ from the reader’s viewpoint? Or another layout scheme to get the same result? When using \setuphead[section][alternative=text] I noticed two things: 1. There is an extra space (horizontally) directly after the section heading. I can't get a grip on how to get rid of it. 2. A different type of section (define with \definehead[summary][section] seems to alter it's behaviour due to a \setuphead[section][..]. Shouldn't the summary behaviour be independend of what one sets for section? My main problem though is how to get rid of that extra horizontal space after the normal section heading. The next sentence should align just like the section is a normal sentence itself (only typeset as bold). Is there a solution for that? Many thanks. Font switching on title page

I have started to design a title page for a paper. First comes an information block at bodyfont size \tf (all in sans serif), followed by the title of the paper in \bfd, then the author (=me) in \bfa. The information block that follows then should be in bodyfont size again, but it isn’t, it is too tall. What am I missing about font switching? Bug? Interaction between criterium=cite and sectioning

Dear gang, When sectioning is combined with the bibliography handler, \placepublications [criterium=cite] stops working. Note that \placepublications [criterium=all] works across sections, which will of course output the entire database (which we do not want). Is there a setting that I'm missing? Citing a PhD dissertation

Dear gang, ConTeXt currently follows archaic BibTeX conventions in labeling doctoral dissertations for bibliography. So we have the tag 'phdthesis' as in \startpublication[k=hamid98, t=phdthesis, a=Hamid, y=1998, s=ISH98] \author[]{Idris Samawi}[I.]{}{Hamid} \title{The Metaphysics and Cosmology of \TeX} \pubname{\TeX\ State University} \pubyear{1998} \stoppublication The tag gets mapped to 'PhD thesis' in the output. But current English style is to use 'thesis' for Masters degrees and 'dissertation' for doctoral degrees [See the Merriam-Webster Style Manual or even google 'phd thesis or dissertation' for lots of confirmation of this]. As development of a new mkiv module continues, I would suggest changing this to the standard usage. In the meantime: How can I change the label in the current bibliography system? More headache with \setuphead

Related post: section with \sethupead[section][alternative=text]; other type of section misbehaves.. Hello list, It seems I have more problems with \setuphead, which I can't get hold on. This time content misbehaves in way I can't understand. Here are the relevant definitions/commands: \setuphead[chapter] [header=nomarking, command=\MyChapterCommand, aligntitle=yes, align={flushleft,nothyphenated,verytolerant}] \setuphead[content] [command=, textcommand=\MyContentCommand] What I expect this set of definitions to do is to indeed perform \MyChapterCommand for a chapter to typeset the title of a chapter. For the table of contents, I hoped that it would not do the command, which I set for chapter (by clearing that option with =,), and instead perform the textcommand \MyContentCommand. However from my output it is clear that the table of content still does \MyChapterCommand. As a workaround, I postponed setting \setuphead for chapter till after the content. But why does this not work? Even if content is supposedly doing the same thing as chapter does, it I make thereafter changes to content, and in fact "undo" the command setting and instead direct it to perform a textcommand, I don't expect it to still perform \MyChapterCommand. But it does that.
