Hello I am using a very short experimental file of five pages to acquaint myself with ConTexT, and find that processing takes a long time (over a minute or sometimes over two minutes) because at every run it is checking on paths etc. - mainly verifying and searching for fonts. Is there some way to prevent this, either by a command within the file or by giving something after -- when I invoke ConText (which I do from the Windows command line)? I shall paste below a short section of a very long log (1452 lines) so that ConTexperts can see what I mean. Hello list, I remember having read something about this, but I can't remember where: I need to prevent the next \par. The context (lowercase) is XML typesetting, where sometimes I want to concatenate two paragraphs in a particular typesetting, while keeping the original structure of the document (two distinct paragraphs). Alternate text for figures that includes math

Dear All, When tagging an image, it looks like the provided alternative text is used verbatim. That means no TeX commands are interpreted, nor any math is being interpreted. Is it possible to serialize the math in an alternate text (as the tracker does with the non-ALT math in the example below)? I can do this manually, but my figures contain quite a bit of math, and it would be nice if alternate text for math is provided consistently throughout the document. Time stamp on PDFs

I have figured out how to place a date stamp on my PDFs (outside of the printable area bounded by crop marks) but I would ideally like to include the time of processing as well. I don't see anything like the plain TeX primitive \time (and when out of curiosity I tried '\the\time' this returned a mysterious number - today it is '691' - which doesn't seem relevant). Predefined output intents:

I know I have raised this before, but I continue to be confused. I spoke with our printer dept and they told me I need to use Coated FOGRA39 (ISO 12647-2:2004) as intent. 1. I checked the wiki and it tells me that Predefined output intents includes the above intent. But my log file tells me: backend > profiles > profile specification 'Coated FOGRA39' not found in 'colorprofiles.xml, colorprofiles.lua'. (I am using ConTeXt ver: 2022.08.25) 2. I checked on the internet re colorprofile files and it tells me that I can download Coated_Fogra39L_VIGC_300.icc as an icc version that is commonly used by Adobe and I feel sure it would be sufficient for my printer's purposes. I placed it where the other profile files are located in the ConTeXt tree /context/tex/texmf-context/colors/icc/profiles 3. It is still not recognised, but perhaps I have to run a command for that to happen. My question(s): - is my procedure correct? In other words, can I place such a file in the profiles subfolder and expect it to work? - do I need to run a particular context -- command for this to happen? Julian

Diacritic in variable fonts

Hi, I really like the idea of using a single font and only changing variables and using it for the whole document. Ubuntu Sans (Variable) makes this possible, but upper diacritics (eg. Ä) are not scaled when width is changed, the lower diacritics (eg. ą) seem to work as desired. Unfortunately, I can't narrow down the problem any further. I can change the width with Google Fonts without any errors, and Inkscape doesn't cause any problems either. How can I fix that? Using Kurinto: Cursive/Slanted

I continue to be stumped by font stuff. I want to use the cursive-style font (font family Kurinto TRom) for italics, but still use the normal oblique style for slanted. But the naïve/obvious approach doesn't do it—italics are unaffected. Help? Cropmarks

Hello I'm getting to grips with page layout and hope that it will be possible to set up crop marks on all four corners of each page. Currently when I give 'marking=on' I'm getting a crop mark top left on an odd-numbered page and top right on an even-numbered page, and it does look as if these are in the correct position; but the printer will want all four corners of each page to be demarcated, and I haven't found a setting to achieve that. Can Bytemaps be overwritten?

Hi all, I've been doing some testing to see if bytemaps can be overwritten as a way of reusing them and came up with the code below. The MPpage page 1 should, if my thinking is correct, give three unitsquares coloured red, blue, and green. However it seems the squares are all coloured green. To get what I expected I rewrote the code as in MPpage page 2, but to get the desired outcome I had to create 3 bytemaps. So, does this mean that bytemaps can't be overwritten, or am I missing something? Good day, Contexters I've been using plain TeX for many years (EmTeX, if anyone can remember that, and latterly XeTeX), but my motivation for getting acquainted with ConText, rather late in life, is the need to produce tagged PDFs that will be accessible to the visually impaired (generally using an audio reader), and I understand (or at least hope) that ConText can help with that. I'm only just getting started with the *Not so Short Introduction*, and of course have many questions which I think/hope I will be able to answer myself from the documentation: I've not managed to load pstricks or edmac, for example, but this must be possible, and some primitives such as \baselineskip seem to have disappeared, together with the font-call system I'm used to: \font\umirtenpointsevenfive = "MinionPro-Regular:+onum:mapping=tex-text:letterspace=1.6" at 10.75pt All that will come as I read the instructions, but what I'm most interested to achieve is tagging that will not only produce the usual column of bookmarks at the left-hand side but will also allow an audio reader to read such things as alt-text for illustrations and, crucially, read a heavily footnoted text in the correct order. For this I take it that the footnotes will have to be tagged in a special way, allowing visually impaired readers either to suppress them as the text is read out, or else to include them at the point where the cue occurs, then revert back to the main text. With my XeTeX-produced PDFs an audio reader will simply read all of the main text on a page, then the footnotes (the last of which may be split between pages), and then start again on the next page - clearly annoying and unacceptable to those who can't see the PDF. I'd be most grateful to be pointed in the right direction - or is what I've outlined simply not achievable? Hi, I uploaded a new version, this time a bit of beta, because of: -- reworked control over callbacks: more restrictive, some protection against overload, better control; as a side effect context can run a bit faster but it depends on the job and features used; if something is not working as expected it might relate to this (easy to fix) -- some preparations for an upgrade of grid snapping, profiling and spacing (mostly related to math in the new columnsets); we're still working on columnsets (side effect of mikael converting some advanced documents to use it) -- overload protection enabled, for the moment only the warnings but at some point we might become more restrictive; keep an eye on messages so that you can see where your styles actually messes with already defined macros or enter the dangerous zone of changing primitives; fwiw: i've been running the highest level of protection already for years now (error mode) .. you can try \enabledirectives [overloadmode=error] at the top of your file to see how badly you behave -- a few fixes here and there (related to mailing list questions and reports); nothing spectacular -- some preparations wrt the new signalling mechanism(s) ... more about that after the meeting -- additional warnings (or abort) in case one runs from tex live and missing or expected files -- we're playing with some potential speedups but given the litle gain they might not make it into the lot eventually (if you run into bottlenecks, lets me know, with examples) if there are unexpected side effects, let me know and i'll fix and upload again Hans ps. i might reintroduce the beta/current updating scheme at some point .. still undecided ----------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: 038 477 53 69 | www.pragma-ade.nl | www.pragma-pod.nl -----------------------------------------------------------------

Opening quotation mark

Hello I have found that trep=yes gives me correct closing quotation marks in the commercial font Baskerville MT Pro if I type the simple ' as usual in TeX; but opening quotation marks remain as ` or ``. In XeTeX I could get round this with e.g.: \catcode"0060=\active% 0060 is the position for ` \def`{{\char"2018}}% 2018 is the position for ‘ (opening quote) But this fails in ConTexT. Any idea how to fix this, with or without any \catcode fiddling? (In XeTeX the font works as expected if I just give mapping=tex-text when setting up the font call, but I don't see an obvious version of that in ConTexT.) Hi, My presentations are using the luciole font (https://luciole-vision.com/) a font designed for eyed-impaired people and big sizes. It is quite appreciated by my pupils. However, some titles are overboxed. There is certainly a way to force line break and avoid such breaks, but I don't know it (although I attended Hans and Mikael's brilliant speeches about \penalty ). fake small caps

For (OpenType) fonts that don’t have native smallcaps, like IBM Plex, I used to get fake smallcaps with \sc. This still worked in 2024-12. Now it doesn’t, and \setsmallcaps or any of the other options that activate the scaps feature also don’t work, which makes sense. https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Pseudo_Small_Caps looks very MkII. Can ConTeXt output in grayscale?

I have a document with lots of color text, Metapost art, and various images in PDF, JPG, and PNG format. I might have the printer just print in black and white, as it cuts printing costs in half. Is there a way to tell ConTeXt to compile everything so it appears grayscale, so I can better visualize how it would look printed? --Joel

\time pendant to \currenttime

Hi list, I was wondering if there is a "\time" equivalent similar to "\currentdate" -> "\date"? I know from the wiki (and source) that there is "\currenttime", but "\time[h=8, m=30]" will not typeset "8:30", so it doesn't seem to be implemented. I understand that such an implementation might become arbitrarily complicated … In fact, I'm trying to typeset durations like "3:30 min" which is not exactly a "time" either, but neither \unit{3:30 minute} nor a math formula achieve the expected rendering. Of course, one could just type it plainly, but maybe this little gap is worthwhile considering in a future version. :-) Thank you! Best Benjamin

ConTeXt in TeX Live

Hi all, Previously, ConTeXt was imported into TeX Live once per year, via a TDS archive from CTAN. There were a few problems with this: 1. To handle this import, the TeX Live maintainers had to create lots of custom scripts, and even then, the import still needed lots of manual effort. 2. ConTeXt received zero updates throughout the year, not even for bug fixes. So even if a bug were fixed upstream, TeX Live users would need to wait up to a full year. 3. ConTeXt contained a number of support files for non-free fonts, which are against TeX Live's policies, so they were removed. However, this meant that there was no easy way for users to install these files. 4. The ConTeXt TDS archive does not contain all files present in the ConTeXt Standalone Distribution. Notably, this includes the ConTeXt companion fonts, which had to be manually imported into TeX Live (and were briefly mispackaged last year). Because of this, I've taken over packaging ConTeXt for CTAN and TeX Live. The very first release via this new process has already been imported into TeX Live, and should reach the CTAN mirrors shortly. I've set up some scripts that automatically repackage the contents of the ConTeXt Standalone Distribution every day, so the ConTeXt in TeX Live should never be more than a couple days older than the official upstream version. In addition, I've created a new "context-nonfree" package on TLContrib that contains any files excluded from TeX Live for policy reasons, so that users can easily install these optional support files. The primary goal of this project is to make an installation of TeX Live with "scheme-context" (plus "context-nonfree" from TLContrib) behave identically to the ConTeXt Standalone Distribution with all modules installed. Note that "scheme-full" (AKA the default "Full" TeX Live installation) is a superset of "scheme-context", which means that most TeX Live users will now have a complete ConTeXt installation by default. Repacking ConTeXt took quite a bit of work, so I'm sure that I've introduced some mistakes.
