How to keep nested itemize group together with parent itemize item?

I have a nested itemize list like this, with first a question, then answer: \starttext \startitemize[n] \startitem What is the color of the sky? \stopitem \startitemize[3] \startitem blue \stopitem \startitem green \stopitem \startitem red \stopitem \startitem yellow \stopitem \stopitemize \startitem What is the color of the grass? \stopitem \startitemize[3] \startitem blue \stopitem \startitem green \stopitem \startitem red \stopitem \startitem yellow \stopitem \stopitemize \startitem What is the color of the butterfly? \stopitem \startitemize[3] \startitem blue \stopitem \startitem green \stopitem \startitem red \stopitem \startitem yellow \stopitem \stopitemize \stopitemize \stoptext My copyeditor has noticed that often times a page break will appear after a question, leaving the answers, or some answers on a new page. He's requested I make sure the page breaks can only occur in front of a question, such that if a new page is needed, it places the question and answers always on the same page. Is there any way to make that happen in ConTeXt? --Joel

Why does text within a very simple xtable seem to not want to take up a lot of free space?

LMTX and PDF document form German »Bundesgesetzblatt«

Dear list, for some reason unknown to me, LMTX has problems with PDF documents comming form the German official gazzette. http://www.bgbl.de/xaver/bgbl/start.xav?startbk=Bundesanzeiger_BGBl&jumpTo=… contains one of the documents and here is a minimal sample: \setuplayout[page] \starttext \externalfigure[bgbl_Bundesgesetzblatt Teil I_2022_Nr. 20 vom 22.06.2022_bgbl122s0928.pdf] \stoptext The source above distorts the page presentation with LMTX, but it is perfectly fine with LuaTeX. How to tell a single *.tex file to produce separate PDFs?

I have a document that's quite long. It uses a recurse function, a bit like this: \starttext \dostepwiserecurse{1}{180}{1}{% \input chapter\recurselevel } \stoptext That produces 180 chapters of content. Anyway, my boss is upset she has to use a table of contents to navigate to the page she wants, and so wants me to split the file into 180 separate files, which somehow is going to be easier to look at. Honestly, she probably still won't ever actually look at it, but that's her requirement. The problem is, I've been splitting the file by using Print --> PDF and choosing a custom print range, and then saving it. If I ned to repeat that 180 times, it not only will have errors, but probably take 5-10 hours. Is there something I can put, like \breakpdf or something that will tell it to start a new PDF file? They can be named something like file1.pdf, file2.pdf, etc. \starttext \dostepwiserecurse{1}{136}{1}{% \input chapter\recurselevel \breakpdf } \stoptext The perhaps "obvious" answer is just make 180 *.tex files, but since the minimal example above is like 0.01% of the complexity of the real file, that isn't so easy... --Joel

appendaction in "shipouts" "after" fails in the latest version

It could be appended normally in the version 2024.04.01 08:59, but failed in the latest version. Envelopes and shaded paths

Hi, I have been playing about with envelopes to produce shaded paths as described in the new LuaMetFun manual, see page 105 therein. Using the code below I wanted to produce a shaded path, in this case a curve and then rotating it in 5 degree steps from 0 to 355 degrees to produce a kind of spiral. I was expecting the shading to remain that way, however, as the curve is rotated round, the shading effect slowly changes until it is reversed, and as it continues to be rotated it returns to it original shading. Although I quite like that effect, it's a nice feature, I would like to be able to produce the shading the way I wanted. A while back Hans explained to me why this happened and how I could remedy it, but unfortunately my aged memory has failed me and I cant remember how to do it. So I thought the youthful brains of the ConTeXt group may be able to help out, and it might be of interest in any case. I attach a pdf of the spiral effect. Best Wishes Keith McKay

Problem with context --extra=select

Greetings, Regardless of the selection criteria, the select tool selects only the first page. This feature works in my ConTeXt versions from 2024.05.17 and 2024.08.13. I'm running the latest version, i.e. 2024.09.17. context --extra=select --selection=11:16 forexample.pdf I've attached the output in a log file if anyone's interested. Table and rotation: push together 45 degree rotated cells

Hi, I want to typeset a table where some of the column headings are really long, while in the columns itself consists only of numbers. Therefore, my idea was to rotate the column headings but not 90 degrees (I found some solutions for that) but 45 degree. It then would be beneficial to push together the rotated cells, so the text of one cell actually starts above the previous cell. Do you know, how to achieve that? Something like \setupTABLE[row][2-][column][2,3,4][background=color, backgroundcolor=red]. In this example this would cover all numbers but nothing else. Best Gerion

Inline equations and html export

I have noticed a change which seems to break XML/html export for inline equations; although I don't know if the issue is with the new version or with how I'm using it. Minimal example: ``` \setupbackend[export=yes] \setupexport[alternative=html] \starttext $1 + 1 = 2$ \stoptext ``` When compiling with ConTeXt 2024.09.17 and opening either the `.html` or `.xhtml` file with Firefox or Chromium, the positions of the 2 and = sign are reversed, while the equation is correctly rendered when using ConTeXt 2024.08.16. any way to show downloading progress for the `install.sh`?

for the installation of ConTeXt, when the shell script `install.sh` start to run, any way to show the downloading progress when it fetches the zip from the site? For example: ``` mtx-install | fetching 'http://lmtx.pragma-ade.com/install-lmtx//texmf.zip' ``` It looks stopped while the downloading is going on. but the user may wrongly regard something goes wrong When the networking speed is slow. Two options would be nice: a) just how the current percentage of the downloaded data; b) even better, under the line, starting a new line, starting with a percentage, then followed by dash characters plus an arrow like `->` to show the downloading progress dynamically --- while the downloaded data adding up, the number of dash characters prolongs accordingly.

I tried figuring out how to get the spacing for all of these to be set to a single space worth but it seems to not be possible with `distance`, because it asks for a dimension. How can I get a `\space`'s worth of spacing to be the default in descriptions, itemizations, and sections? for itemizations and descriptions the spacing seems to vary and I really don't like that. I would be thankful to know if there's a way to change the spacing.

Calling C code from ConTeXt LMTX

Hello, TL;DR: Could building LuaMetaTeX with the `-fPIC` flag for the Lua library have negative consequences? Is there a better way to be able to call external C functions from ConTeXt? I am working on a small project where it would be convenient to call functions written in C (possibly pre-compiled in a shared library) from ConTeXt. After looking at the Lua FFI, I found a way that seems to work (with ConTeXt LMTX 2024-08-16) but requires a small tweak to the cmake file used for building the Lua library. I would be grateful to have the opinion of people more knowledgeable than I am about whether this change could have negative consequences and whether there is a more straightforward way to call external C code. What I am trying to achieve is: * Compile some C code in a shared library (for instance, it may contain a numerical solver for some partial differential equation). * Have this code run when compiling a document with ConTeXt. (For instance, solving the differential equation with parameters defined in the .tex file and retrieving the results to plot a figure with MetaPost.) One easy way to do that is: * Write wrappers for the functions that will need to be called from ConTeXt using the Lua C API. * Compile the code and wrappers in a shared library and linking to the static lua library used by LuaMetaTeX (liblua.a on Linux). * In the .tex file, import the new library using, e.g., ``` \startluacode mylib = require("mylib") -- additional code using the C functions \stopluacode ``` * Run ConTeXt with the `--permitloadlib` flag. However, the second step requires (at least on Linux) liblua.a to be compiled with the `-fPIC` flag. I could do that by adding ``` set_property(TARGET lua PROPERTY POSITION_INDEPENDENT_CODE ON) ``` at line 47 in lua.cmake. Is there any known negative effect of doing that (apart from a possible small performance drop)? (Just to be clear, this is not a feature request; I'm just wondering whether doing it on my side is fine.) On a related note, is there a standard way to call external C functions (either in a shared library or in a .c file) from ConTeXt LMTX? The SwigLib library described in https://www.pragma-ade.nl/general/manuals/swiglib-mkiv.pdf looks very promising (and maybe could be a way to achieve what I'm trying to do in a much cleaner way), but I (maybe for lack of trying hard enough) have not been able to make it work with ConTeXt LMTX so far. Margins using 2UP imposition schema

Hello: I'm composing an A5 booklet printed on an A4 paper using the 2UP imposition schema. I believe, in such case, margins should be controlled using 'backspace' and 'cutspace' options of the \setuplayout command, but I'm afraid I don't quite understand how to use those properl. I want to make the 'external' margin (right on odd pages and left on even pages) as small as possible, and the 'internal' margin larger, so that I can hole punch the booklet. \button is defined to jump to a given reference. However, I would like to place a button that can execute a macro to be defined by myself. Thus for example pushing the button \executebutton{text}{macro} will execute that macro. Is this available somewhere in ConTeXT? If not, can it be provided in a future update? yours sincerely dr. Interline spacing in tabulate paragraphs

Greetings, Is there a way to set interline spacing in tabulate environments? The table's paragraphs do not seem to obey \setupinterlinespace like the rest of the text does.
