Low-level macro help needed

Hello Hans and developers, I have been trying to convert some two- and three-step macros (as shown below) to single-step macros using the LMTX syntax given in the low-level macros manual. I have succeeded in many cases, but failed when the macro follows one particular group of patterns. The group of patterns is similar to this macro to process \MyMacro[optional]{Required}{Required}{Optional} In this the number of arguments can be 2, 3, or 4. If I am not missing something in the manual about how to provide that first optional argument as an empty value, I think I have one. Could [#?] always return a value (perhaps empty)? Lemma in footer - some display issue

Dear CTX users, After many months of procrastination and after discovering Ekdosis for LaTEX, I've dived back into the issues of different levels of footnotes in order to display on the first level the current notes and on the levels below the notes concerning lemmatization. Unfortunately, while I'm quite satisfied with the first page of notes, a strange phenomenon affects the lemmatization notes on the 4th page: the number of the line concerned by the lemma overwrites the last letter of the word in the lemma or in the previous lesson. I can't work out the cause of this problem. Even something like the addition of : \kern0.5em doesn't help. Does anyone have an approach that I haven't intuited? Below a MWE :

making TABLE spacing match tabulate/halign spacing

Greetings, TABLE uses framed extensively to make its cells. it adds all sorts of offsets and paddings (especially vertical) to cells that annoy me greatly. i'd like to set up TABLEs to have the same vertical spacing as a regular tabulate table or even halign, but i keep getting lost in the options for both TABLE and framed. which ones do i need? i'd like it to play nice with interline spacing options as well. creating a printed book

I have created 22 MSword files mainly text with embedded PNG diagrams. I am seeking to have these converted to Context and to redo the (simple) diagrams. I was thinking of using MetaPost. I am seeking to pay a typesetter to assist me in this task. I would be willing to pay for your time or for the time of a colleague you could direct me to. I am seeking to have typeset a book. The MSWord files have already been professionally proof-read, and the subject matter is political economy from the 18th century and how this translates to and may contradict conventional wisdom within the field of modern economics. Other typesetters I have contacted have suggested running pandoc to create a LaTeX file and use Tikz for the diagrams. But I have spent 3 days reading on advancements in the ConText side of the industry which I suspect is far more advanced. I would prefer to use better tools as a longer term solution. Adjusting Font Based Math Parameters

Hi, For testing I would like to be able to adjust the font-based math parameters within ConTeXt MKIV. I have been trying this \startformula \Umathfractiondenomdown\displaystyle=1em \displaystyle \frac{a}{b} \stopformula but the second command does not seem to have any effect on the output at all. I am sure I am missing something, any help much appreciated. JR

equation to right margin

Issue with Custom Conversion Code in Latest Version of ConTeXt

Footnote in a cell inside a row into a table !

Dear users, I'm struggling with a bibliographic reference that I want to integrate after a name that happens to be in a cell, itself located in a table. All my code works, except for the bibliographic reference given by the footnote and the \cite command. Here's the line as it appears in my code: \startxtable[option=stretch, align={middle,lohi}, frame=off, distance=0.5em] \startxrow \startxcell \em Ambrosianus\footnote{Cf. \cite[alternative=entry][Bibliography::mai1]} \stopxcell \stopxrow \stopxtable All preliminary declarations into the file are made correctly, as is the backmatter. The PDF output is correct, but the bibliographic reference is not displayed. I seem to vaguely remember a message pointing out a similar difficulty. By coding the bibliographic reference outside the cell, the whole text display is correct, but the bibliographic reference is not displayed. I’m testing this code under Mac OSX : system > ConTeXt ver: 2022.01.06 19:51 LMTX fmt: 2022.1.7 int: English/English and I’m satisfied with the work it is doing. Thank you very much, Hans, I had already written to Dick Koch before the first replies arrived. He wrote that I could simply use Lua(La)TeX. So it works with Lua(La)TeX. A self-created lua.engine works and your ConTeXt solution with --runner=mtxrun in the first line works as well. penalties

Yesterday I learned: \startsetups[*default] \widowpenalties 3 10000 1000 0 \clubpenalties 3 10000 1000 0 \orphanpenalties 2 8000 1000 \stopsetups If I want the penalty settings applied to “everything” (after defining the layout, I think?), then I need the setup "*defaults". Since TeX uses a club against orphans (brutal!), I’m not sure what \orphanpenalty is for. I remember \twinpenalty is against doubled words (below each other?), and \toddlerpenalty against single letter words at the end of a line (why “toddler”?). widows and clubs get only 150 in TeX, but 2000 in ConTeXt, as far as I could find. Are there more penalties that make sense to set individually? WRT demerits: Did I understand correctly that demerits are the “sum” (some formula) of badness and penalties in a line or paragraph? widows and orphans in \definestartstop?

I have defined a simple environment for verse within prose-context. Obviously I never want the first or last lines of the verses to stand as widows or orphans. I could just add \nobreak to every first and last line of verse to achieve this. But I was wondering whether I could change anything of my \definestartstop to do this automatically. Simply adding \nobreak to before= and after= doesn't work. Thank you all for your time! fixing kerning and substitutions

I am trying to reuse code of a project from 2017 with TL23 context. (Other questions probably coming up...) Back then I used font handlers to fix some smaller problems in the font, i.e. a wrongly placed small capital and missing kerning for the small caps. The following code works with context 2017.04.27 01:00 MKIV beta but has stopped having any effect using recent context (2023.05.05 18:36 LMTX). There are no error messages. Has the syntax changed? Or is the functionality dropped completely? I was also wondering why it has never been working to adjust the kerning for the regular letters, e.g. "A" and "V" in the example, neither in 2017 nor today. Thanks a lot in advance! Adding a line after the TOC

I am struggling with something that might be simple enough, but... The author is insisting that on the TOC page, after all the chapters and their page numbers, I need to add the line (obviously without any page number associated with it): 'All translations are by the author'. I have trie various combinations of \writetolist and \writebetweenlist, and I can get his comment at the beginning of the TOC, but I cannot get it at the end, and perhaps with some vertical space separation from the main list. How can I place it at the end? I wonder if there is a better way to process csv files to a table with more flexibility? Or do I simply miss the switch to mark the first row in the csv file as the header that has to repeat? Deactivate (back)links of the bibliography

Hi, when typesetting bibliographies, ConTeXt seems to link back to the (first?) citation within the text. A side effect is that the whole reference entry is colored in the link color. Is there a possibility to deactivate the back linking or limit it to the key? This is also relevant, when the bibliography contains additional URLs or DOIs that link to external resources but are not highlighted since all surrounding text is colored in the same way. Small issue with \breakhere in math mode

Hi Hans and Mikael, I found a small issue in math mode with \breakhere. When \breakhere is followed by a brace in the following line, it creates a spurious break line. It can be fixed easily by the user by adding an empty line or issuing a \relax command, but I wanted to let you know. How to improve appearance of bars in frac, sqrt, etc. on screens?

Hello, I’m relatively new to ConTeXt (version 2024.05.31, LMTX, standalone) and really enjoy learning it so far, but I have one little problem with the appearance of horizontal bars in math mode. It seems the way ConTeXt displayed horizontal extensible bars in math mode some time ago (as used in \frac, \sqrt, \overbar, ...) was similar to the way LaTeX (PDFLaTeX and LuaLaTeX) and Plain TeX handled this, but it has changed since then. Instead of one bar there are now multiple characters attached to each other. This makes it look more consistent with the font, but unfortunately it doesn’t display well in any PDF viewer I’ve tried (on Linux, so I’ve not tried Adobe Acrobat Reader). The bars look dotted, I guess it’s due to anti-aliasing (the dots disappear when anti-aliasing is disabled, but then of course everything looks pixelated). Two screenshots are attached (different zoom levels in PDF viewer) so that you know what I’m talking about. Draw leftframe to a description

Hi, I want to typeset an "excurses" description that is marked with a leftframe. The problem is that it spans about multiple pages and has footnotes. In principal, I would like the excurses typesetted like to solution with \defineframedtext. However, this does not work with pagebreaks. Additionally, the leftframe is too long (it begins above the "Excursus" text). I tried toffset to let the leftframe begin exactly at the "Excurses" text without success. The solution with \textbackground looks somewhat promising. It supports pagebreaks, but draws above footnotes and prints a small rectangle at the end of the excursus. I also didn't found a way to specify a leftframe only. Also, loffset seems to have no effect, here. Do I use the false environments? Do you know a better solution? Gerion

Issues with vim and lettrine modules

Hi all, I'm trying to compile Axel Kielhorn's guide available here: https://github.com/AKielhorn/Context-Intro However, I get compilation errors regarding *vim *and *lettrine*. Both modules are loaded in the source files, so I typed in the terminal: mtxrun --script install-modules --install vim lettrine but the errors do not disappear. I ask you if these two modules produce known errors. In any case, the sources are available at the URL indicated above. If needed, I'll paste a MWE here in a future message.
