understanding \writetolist and \writebetweenlist

Hi, I’m trying to understand the ordering of list entries and find it really hard. Below is the content of "inbetween-01.tex" from the test suite, more or less the same was in https://wiki.contextgarden.ne/Command/writebetweenlist; I tried to enhance it but probably messed it up. Looking at the examples, I only partly understand what’s going on. * What’s the difference of \writetolist and \writebetweenlist WRT their connection to the place where they occur? This seems to be important. (\writetolist has a section number, \writebetweenlist hasn’t …) * What’s the difference between location="here", "none" or nothing with \writetolist? * In my notes, I found the remark that "between" items should be anchored to a paragraph (not being their own par) to avoid inserting whitespace. * The order of \placelist can be normal, command, all or title. The latter isn’t mentioned in the file below, but in the interface. I don’t understand the effect for "normal" or "all" in the example. - normal: there’s some reordering. - command: "only the commands": does this mean, sort the "between" entries by macro name or how? - all: everything in the order of occurrence (that’s clear) - title: sorted by title; how does this affect "between" entries? When pushing something inbetween (in mkiv) it ends up directly in the list. This is the default because otherwise users will wonder why spacing might get messed up (due to an unseen but present node). It is possible to force a location by explicitly setting \type {location} to \type {here}. Another way to force a certain order is to set the \type {order} variable when placing a list. The \type {command} option only pushes commands into the right order, and \type {all} orders all entries (which might be too much). In this case no specific location is needed with the inbetween method. Possible to "freeze" numbering when using stacking

Hi, I use stacking to incrementally reveal text in slides. Is it possible to freeze numbering when using stacking? Including SVG manipulating color or rewrite in MP

Dear all, I have near to zero knowledge about MPgraphics, so I always use SVG files from various sources. How to make this Metapost diagram adjust to the width of text?

I am using this to create a simple branched diagram, with one item, branches into two, and each of those two further branch into two. I'm running into two problems: (1) The lines cut right through the word "apple" and "banana", I need to place a node at the right of apple and banana that connects to sub-branches. In other words, I'd rather it have a broken line, ending at left of apple and then continuing at right of apple. (2) If you put longer text in the top category, it adjusts. And if you put longer text in the lowest branches, it adjusts, but I can't find a way to get the branches to adjust length to accommodate longer text in the middle, where apple and banana are. Trying to get a single page of a specific size, I set the width and height of \startTEXpage only to find out that a \strut as a last command before the \stopTEXpage, will expand the height. 8<---- \setuppapersize [A2] \starttext \startTEXpage[offset=0mm, width=220mm, height=110mm] MWE without \type{\strut} -> Landscape (220 × 110 mm) %MWE with \type{\strut} -> Landscape (220 × 111 mm) %\strut \stopTEXpage \stoptext --->8 There if probably a reason to it, so I'd like to know why it works as it does. .F

Roman numerals typography

Hello, In French typography, roman numerals are usually typeset being connected with a top bar and a lower bar, at least when it comes to century numbers (should be also small caps, something I discovered today). Since I am not sure my vocabulary suits to this reality, you can see a sample looking at photos displayed in this online article https://fr.cultura10.com/r%C3%A8gles-d%27%C3%A9criture-des-nombres-romains/ I have been simulating this with kerning for several years, but I recently switched from Latin Modern Sans to Luciole (both 24pt) for my presentations and I have to redesign this issue. So it is a good opportunity to find some a better alternative than stuff like \def\III{{\rm I\kern -1.3pt I\kern -1.3pt I}}, working at the font level or with a ConTeXt built-in macro. Several questions: 1) Is this already implemented in ConTeXt (I don't have time to reinvent the wheel once more)? The sample I looked at in the \Romannumeral wiki page doesn't implement this, but they may be alternative I am not aware of. 2) If it isn't, I think the best way would be to add a font extension, using hits given by Hans in the 11th meeting proceedings. However, what would be the best idea: playing with kerning, or with ligatures? Thanks for your advices, Damien Thiriet

Transition from ConTeXt mark II to mark IV

Hallo. I need some help. I have all my teaching materials (slides, worksheets, and everything, including many MetaPost figures) in ConTeXt mark II. After the transition to Ubuntu 24.10, I found that the texexec is not a part of the ConTeXt distribution anymore. I tried to compile my stuff with context instead and failed. This is probably because the macros in my old modules (created by myself many years ago) are not compatible with mark IV. Hence my question: Is there any document on the transition from mark II to mark IV? Many thanks for your kind help. Best wishes, Michal

Hiding a part of a path

Metapost lines with fancy line endings and connections

Hi, I have a bunch of similar graphics on a 7x7 where some lines have exceptions for the endings and connections. - When a line ends in one of the four corners the line end has an angle of 45 degrees. - When a line takes a turn the outer corner results also in a 45 degree angle. - Single points always use straight endings. - Lines which end outside of a corner end with a straight line. While I can get the desired result which a filled path I'm looking for a solution where I have to set fewer control points. Line break after a Metapost picture at start of paragraph

Hi, I have just encountered a (to me) slightly surprising behaviour in ConTeXt LMTX 2024.10.31: there seems to be an automatic line break after a Metapost picture if it is at the start of a paragraph. Here is a simple example showing this behaviour: ------------------------------------------------------------------ \starttext % Two different lines \startMPcode fill fullcircle scaled 10pt; \stopMPcode text % Single line text \startMPcode fill fullcircle scaled 10pt; \stopMPcode \stoptext ------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm not sure whether this is a bug or intended behaviour, though - maybe this is the expected output for users more familiar with TeX and/or ConTeXt than I am. I would have two question, though: 1) Is there a canonical way to get the second behaviour (multiple Metapost pictures and text on the same line) if the first Metapost picture starts the paragraph? One workaround seems to be to add \noindent (plus \hskip if I do want indentation) before the first Metapost picture, but maybe there is a better way. 2) If this is intended behaviour, is there already a description of it in the Wiki or would it make sense for me to add it? Why are my images floating away even though I used "here" and "force" settings?

I have a textbook that includes images--and I don't care that they are placed wherever. But for the workbook, its confusing for the readers if the images float to another location. If the items don't appear in this order, it really gets confusing, as basically there is an activity that says "color the map" and students can't find the map--even if its just a page later. TitleInstructionsImageRequirements In other words, I can't have it float somewhere else, though if a page break is needed before it or after it, then that is okay, if that is what is needed to get it to appear. I thought "here" and "force" were supposed to be the commands to achieve this, but its still resulting in the image appearing after requirements or sometimes, after the next activity, which is too confusing to readers. \placefigure[here, force]{Map of New Mexico}{\externalfigure[map1a][width=.8\textwidth]} What more is needed to make it appear exactly as the next item after instructions, and before requirements, without floating away, even if that means a lot of empty space is going to be added to the page? --Joel

Why is framed text crashing into and overlapping other text?

I have a simple enumeration structure like this: 1. word a. _________ b. _________ c. _________ The students will write three properties of each word. The problem I had is it was putting some items on a next page, which confused students. For instance, maybe it shows 1. word(pagebreak) a. _________ b. _________ c. _________ This confused students where to write their answers. (see Attempt 1 code below). So I used a frame to keep the itemized text together. (see Attempt 2 code below). Though in my minimum working example below, it works just fine, somehow in my document it creates weird problems putting frames around the items. Sometimes it puts item 10 on top of 9, so its like the text is written on top of the other text. Sometimes the frames make the text crash over the items after it. Is frame the write tool to use to keep the itemized items together as a group without allowing column and page breaks to separate them? How do I stop the strange behavior of the frames seemingly floating to weird locations and appearing over other text? Is there any way to forbid footnotes from appearing on current page?

I have found some situations in which I have content that interferes with footnotes. Can I tell ConText to delay showing the footnote for a page or two? And then when its safe again, all the footnotes that weren't displayed would be displayed on a later page? --Joel

Tikz CD

Hi, There was a recent question about what appeared to be commutative diagrams, and I wanted to reply saying that one option is to use tikzcd module. However, testing showed that it fails. How to put a ___ before enumerations in ConTeXt?

The problem I find it is looks really messy putting the ___ between the numbering and text, such when you get to numbers that are wider, like 10., the ___ doesn't line up right. I also think its too confusing this way for students to know what to write. Is there a way to move the ___ bit out front of the number? It would look like this: ____ 1. this is some text ____ 2. this is some text --Joel
