Showing parts of PDF files or splitting PDF files

Hi, I need to include a PDF picture in a ConTeXt document that is much too detailed to be scaled down onto a single page. So I need to distribute it across two ore more pages. - Is there a way to display only a part of a PDF file in ConTeXt, like it could be done with manipulation of the bounding box of a PostScript picture in LaTeX? - Does anyone know an application that will split a PDF file into user-defined parts (not just printing pages)? - Any other ideas? Gamma support in TeXExec?

Hello, I noticed that TeXExec has no "native" support for Gamma, in the sense that it doesn't change the "cont-" prefix to "gamma-" when the TeX executable is set to Omega. I did a patch to make this possible, but of course since there are no gamma-<language>.tex files, it doesn't work that simply. I therefore did a more extensive patch (it has to dump the format as cont-en and then rename it) but this is sub-optimal. It would be very easy to do if (recent) fpTeX and teTeX supported the --job-name option ... is this the case? If so, the patch can be done very easily. Anybody using fpTeX or teTeX know about this? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

Apologies for the empty message, subject as above. I have found a set of macros that allow either makeindex or Xindy (in makeindex emulation) to run with Context. This allows for more functionality than the present register commands available from Context proper. They generate a makeindex type output file, which can either be processed by makeindex directly or by Xindy via the makeindex4 script and tex2xindy program called by it. Here are the requirements: Complete Xindy package (or complete makeindex package) index.tex from TeXsis site. A simple input statement starts things off: \input index.tex The indexing commands are \index{--- and \idx{--- \idx causes whatever is between { and } to be printed as well as added to the index. The usual conventions found in the LaTeX \index.sty package obtain. Here are some valid statements: \idx{foo} \index{foo!bar} %subitem \index{fable@foo!babble@bar} %subitem with alternate sorting on both %levels \index{Jose|(} %start range \index{Jose|)} %stop range \index{italicized|ital} %italicized page number. ...and so on. ` If the \idx statement form is used, and \markindextrue is present then the indexed terms will be printed in the document with a box around them indicating that they are indexed. This is a two pass system. The command to import the finished index is \input filename.ind ...where filename is the name of the tex file being indexed. In between the two passes one of these two commands must be run: makeindex filename.idx or for the Xindy alternative: makeindex4 filename.idx Here is a sample document: ---------------- \input index.tex \starttext \index{foo!bar} ... \index{France@{\it France}} \page[yes] \input filename.ind \stoptext --------------- The full power of Xindy in Context is not yet unleashed. Context manuals

As Context continues to expand the number of manuals etc. needed to keep up also continues to expand. Is it perhaps time to either consolidate the manuals into a super manual or, more practically, provide a command/subject index that covers all the manuals? I offer as an example the \useURL statement which I figured out from a recent post. Hello, I just read a post on comp.text.tex asking how to make "This page intentionally left blank" in LaTeX. There, it's a matter of redefining the \cleardoublepage comman; I assumed that ConTeXt had some kind of built-in hook to do that, but I found that it is not so; the command that ejects a blank page when needed is \ejectdummypage, but there is no way to configure it to put something on that page. Could the page ejecting mechanism be slightly improved, with a \setupdummypage[...] command that defines what has to be done with the dummy pages? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

\page[blank] not working

Hi, I tried hard but \page[blank] does nothing. \page[empty] works fine, but in that case the headers are printed, which is not what I want. What to do? Hello, I'm working on an extension of tooltips (see attached file) whose primary goal is for use "instead of" footnotes in interactive documents. While I managed to write the core of the stuff in a rather short time, I need some changes in the core to make sure they work fully as designed. In particular, I need two things: (1) a way to disable counter increments during trial typesetting (2) a way to define "classes" of frames, with specific options to be set (once and for all, but configurable by the user) independently of the frame settings. (Just like for itemgroups). Could these be implemented in the ConTeXt core? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta P.S. DocbookInContext: new version uploaded

I have uploaded a new version of DocbookInContext. This version features improved support for tables. It handles align, colsep and rowsep attributes, multiple tgroups and tfoot elements. While writing this mapping for tables required some careful programming, the task was relatively easy due to Context's natural tables. They provide an excellent basis because they are powerful and flexible, and their design is close to that of the CALS table model. Hi, I have used \setuplabeltext[en][appendix={Appendix~}] to create a header like 'Appendix A blabla' above my appendix. However, in the table of content I get 'A blabla'. Using \setuplist[appendix][label=yes] does not work and \setuplist[chapter][label=yes] works only in combination with \setuplabeltext[en][chapter={Chapter~}]. How to solve this for appendices? Miktex-Context Installation

All, I just installed Miktex 2.2 and got this error message when trying to build Context format. Anyone else get this? What is the workaround? Creating cont-en.efmt... pdfetex.exe --ini --interaction=nonstopmode --halt-on-error --alias cont-en *F:/miktex/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex \dump ! You have to increase POOLSIZE. INITEXMF: pdfetex.exe failed on cont-en.tex I checked miktex.ini and found: ;; Maximum number of characters in strings, including all ;; error messages and help texts, and the names of all fonts and ;; control sequences; must exceed string_vacancies by the total ;; length of TeX's own strings, which is currently about 23000. pool_size=500000 Is this what I should increase? Or is there some other sinister thing that needs taking care of?

advice for a beginner

Hi Everyone: I'm a real beginner with TeX and ConTeXt. I have had some success with English documents, but what I really want to do is create Chinese and Japanese docs. What do I need to understand about TeX and ConTeXt in general in order to do this? There seem to be so many things to learn, I'm not sure where to start. One big question for me is whether or not I need to look at using Omega. I'm not asking for a tutorial on how to do asian languages in TeX, just for advice on what areas of the system I need to know about. Thanks Matthew

Hello, does ConTeXt provide extensible arrows with super and subscript? An extensible arrow is something like \leftarrow, \rightarrow, \Leftarrow, \Rightarrow, except that it accepts super/subscripts which gets typeset over or under the arrow body, which extends to accomdate the length of the super and subscripts (with a minimum guaranteed legth). -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta
