Hi, I want to use sub page numbering in a document but I cannot get it to work. I put these commands in my tex file: \setupsubpagenumber[state=start] \setupfootertexts[][Page \subpagenumber de \numberofsubpages] \starttext \part {Part 1} ..... \part {Part 2} I got this message on my console: ! Undefined control sequence. <argument> Page {\subpagenumber } de \numberofsubpages {}{}{} I'm using ConTeXt ver: 2003.1.31 fmt: 2003.4.23 int: english mes: english Any clues will be appreciated! Inclusion of flow chart

Hans, Thanks for the answer on the section and paragraph signs. I tried \definesymbol[yen][\getglyph{\char165}] to have a yen sign, but it didn't work. How should I do it otherwise? Now, I have another brainteaser. I have a number of charts which a very similar one to another. They all have the same boxes, with the same texts. The only difference from one chart to another is the arrows: I am drawing different arrows with different comments from one chart to another. To be more efficient, I created a chart containing all the shapes without any arrows. Then for each chart, I use the example given at the top of page 8 on the chart doc: \includeFLOWchart[][] (this works perfectly) and I then try to define the arrows. \connection mentions where the arrows goes to, but not where it comes from (which is given by the surrounding cell definition). So I tried the following \startFLOWcell \name[name1] \connection[name2] \stopFLOWcell where name1 and name2 are cells defined in the generic chart. As you might have guessed, this breaks everything. Has anybody an idea as to how I could do that? Custom definition of a bodyfont (and using it)

Hi, I'm trying to make my own headings, and it doesn't really come out the way I want. I'll describe what I'm trying to do, and maybe someone has something that can help me. I'd like to have the chapter number really big, in a (light) colour in the background. The title should go over the number. If possible/needed, the number may end up (partially) under the text. I think I can get the positioning correct (in metapost/metafun if I have to), but defining the (huge) font in ConTeXt proves a hurdle I cannot tackle. My attempts (copied rather directly from the manual) are below. m-unit and extra information for a unit.

Hi TeXnicians, I'd like to have an extension to the units module (I don't mind cooking something myself, but a pointer where to start would be great). In my thesis I will encounter some weird units (one is displayed below, it not the worst, but it comes close). I'd like to produce a list of units, but just the symbol and the actual unit is not really enough, I need room for a description. Ideally this description should be given at the definition of the unit. What I have now is sort-of in between, code shown below. Since the unit module is based on synonyms, I probably have to extend those, but I'm afraid that I really don't understand that code... My current method should work, but it requires a double definition (unless someone comes up with an idea how to define (double if I have to) in one place, and put the resulting list in another location). Ideas? About Big-5 Traditional Chinese

Dear all, ConTeXt has Big-5 Traditional Chinese build-in(thanks :), but I can't let it work normally. Because of the `\' and `}' character in Big-5 charset. For example, Big5-0xB35C(uni8A31), Big5-0xA55C (uni529F) and Big5-0xB67D(uni958B). I use ttf2pt1 to produce *.tfm, *.enc and *.map file for ConTeXt, and use default Poorman's Chinese encoding, I can let the pdfetex grasp TTF directly, but I don't know how to escape `\' and `}'. My system, Slackware Linux 8.1 teTeX-1.0.7 pdfTeX (Web2C 7.3.7) 3.14159-1.00b-pretest-20020211 ConTeXt: TeXExec 3.2 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2003 I change font-chi.tex to use \TraChi default, and change to my Arphic public font`bsmi00lp'. I attach a simple test file(in Big-5 encoding). Did I miss something? Thanks for the help. Edward

Why isn't my space a space?

Hello, I'm trying use pretty printing Java inline. To get my keywords in a slanted typeface, I've found out that I need a space before and after the statement I'm typesetting. I'm trying to automate the space in a macro \Java[], but am having no success. I believe I'm typesetting a space before and after my statement, but the space isn't acceptable to the \type macro: ----- \definetype [typeJV] [option=JV,palet=graypretty,style=\ttx,icommand=\sl] \def\Java[#1]{\typeJV{ #1 }} \setupcolors[state=start] \starttext This statement should have inserted spaces, in order to trigger the slanted behaviour in the `import' keyword: \blank[medium] The ``\Java[import java.io.File;]'' statement \blank[big] This is the type of typesetting I would like to automate: \blank[medium] The ``\hskip-0.5em\typeJV{ import java.io.File; }\nospace{}'' statement. \stoptext -----

about encodings and fonts

Hi ConTeXticians, I'm new to ConTeXt, after almost two years of experience with LaTeX, and also new to the list. I use W98SE as aperitif system and the MikTeX total distribution. My questions are rather simple: -which command should be invoked to set the input enconding to utf-8 (if this is possible)? -how can I make that the output is generated using T1 fonts? I mean the ConTeXt equivalence to LaTeX \usepackage [T1] {fontenc}. -after above questions, I'd like to know whether it is any kind of documentation that explains ConTeXt to LaTeX users. -I don't know why, but my ConTeXt installation seems not to be able to use another font than cm. (I know that MikTeX has change the font map maintenance file early this year.) Is it required to install the fonts 'twice': once for the TeX system and another time for ConTeXt? (I mean, what am I doing wrong?) -after having read the mtexfont.pdf, I wonder whether it is possible to use TrueType fonts directly with ConTeXt? (I'm mainly interested in Unicode fonts that also have Greek and polytonic Greek, which I also need to use.) Thanks for all, Pablo

Hi ConTeXters, I found a couple minor regime/encoding bugs in current (and past) ConTeXt. In the files regi-il1 and xtag-ent, \THorn should be replaced with \Thorn . In the file enco-ans (for texnansi), Eth is missing. It's in the same place as with ec: \definecharacter Eth 208 \definecharacter eth 240 If I understand casemaps correctly, then enco-ans should include eth and thorn also: \definecasemap 240 240 208 \definecasemap 208 240 208 \definecasemap 254 254 222 \definecasemap 222 254 222 ...but following the ec example, I think something like the following will help catch most characters, and clean up the file (untested): \definecasemaps 192 to 214 lc +32 uc 0 \definecasemaps 216 to 222 lc +32 uc 0 \definecasemaps 224 to 246 lc 0 uc -32 \definecasemaps 248 to 254 lc 0 uc -32 tsjiers, adam -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Adam T. How to prevent a page break before a \startformula, and more

Hello. I many of my documents I use \startformula and \stopformula to get displayed mathematics. But I would like to be able to discourage ConTeXt to insert page breaks just before \startformula. Is there any easy way to do this? Also, how do I make \lim behave as \lim\nolimits in inner math (between $ and $) mode and as \lim\limits in displayed math mode (between \startformula and \stopformula)? I known that the following code works. \let\oldlim\lim \def\lim{\ifinner\oldlim\nolimits\else\oldlim\limits\fi} But is there some other way? The Context styles library.

I am going through the Context styles library (colo-ini.tex and friends) to figure out what the various files do. A portion of them come with sample demo code and a smaller portion of the demos work on my system. Am I reinventing the wheel? Is there a document somewhere that says: ``This is what these examples are all about''? I know that there are comments at the head of each file but these can be a bit terse. XML and active characters...

Hello, I am exploring possibilities of different expansion of parts of XML source in ConTeXt. I need to have some characters active (in document), and not active (in some XML attributes). So I need either different active-characters contexts for attributes and for text either some switching/hook mechanism to control active characters manually (e.g. switch \catcode when reading attribute), or some another mechanism (what now I do not know). Is there some way to hook start and stop of reading attribute in ConTeXt XML parser?, or another way to achieve described behaviour? Need help : Fatal mem file error; I'm stymied

Hi, I just start using conTeXt for a week, I found this problem when i try to compile a *.tex file. my file look like this: \usemodule[pre-03] \starttext hello \stoptext compile with texexec --pdf filename.tex and I saw this : ..... This is MetaPost, Version 0.641 (Web2C 7.3.1) (Fatal mem file error; I'm stymied) ..... Of course, all elements of the text on the page including pagenumbers, equationnumbers, footnotes and so on should be typesetted with Palatino. With the following testfile I get only the maintext and the equations with the right fonts. The other elements are typesetted with cmr-fonts. What Do I wrong? old style numerals

Dear fraternity, With Alan Hoenig's help, I have created virtual fonts for cmr5--cmr12 that make oldstyle numerals the default (cmros*.vf). I am having trouble fitting them into my cmr setup. While searching in my Context folder for something else I found this searchable archive: http://ml-archives.mini.pw.edu.pl/ntg-context.html Problem is, the background to the html pages is dark gray, rendering the archive almost unreadable. I can access it in Lynx but then navigation gets tricky. Is there another searchable archive that is easier for old folks to read? A surprising interaction

Dear ConTeXtnicians, I have found a problem constructing my front and back cover for a user manual. In the program below I use the setupexternalfigures line below setting the maximum horizontal and vertical size in in order to simplify the inclusion of figures. It has the undesired side effect of reducing the size of the front and back cover. Presumably I need to set the line to \pagewidth and \pageheight before the back cover. \frac, \eqalign and \usemodule[newmat]

I have encountered a problem when using \fac, \eqalign and \usemodule[newmat] at the same time. I like the newmat module since it gives me the \QED command, but when using \frac inside \eqalign I get an error I cannot understand. \usemodule[newmat] % This works fine. \starttext \startformula \frac12=\frac24 \stopformula % Uncomment to get error. %\startformula %\eqalign{\frac12={}&\frac24\cr} %\stopformula % This works fine. \startformula \eqalign{{1\over2}={}&{2\over4}\cr} \stopformula \stoptext The log file is attached. -- Emil Hedevang Lohse <http://home.imf.au.dk/emil/> Alle spørgsmål er lige dumme. Definition of new fonts

Hi, I try to use a font, which is not packaged with TeX or ConText. I already used the texfont script to install it (successfully). But I can't make the system USE the font. Below is the snippet. The commands do (in the end) have no influence at all. The text is typeset in Computer Modern. If I activate the (now commented) "\starttypescript [xxx]" command, I get an "unknown variant - xxx" error in the log. Does anybody have an idea? Unfortunately, the mfonts.pdf didn't help me much.
