I'd like to add a section on using TeXLive fonts to my help page. First: listing those which are predefined in ConTeXt. Then: writing typescripts for the others. Since I don't want to write any unncessary scripts, please check this list to see if I've missed anything. This is what I see by looking at type-exa.tex and running some experiments: (1) The default, with no type specification, gives Bluesky Computer Modern. (2) This produces CM-Super Computer Modern: \usetypescript[modern][ec] \setupbodyfont[modern] (3) This produces Palatino (URW Palladio): \usetypescript[berry][ec] % or [8r] \usetypescript[palatino][ec] % \setupbodyfont[palatino] (4) This produces Times (URW Nimbus): \usetypescript[berry][ec] % or [8r] \usetypescript[times][ec] % \setupbodyfont[times] (5) These both produce Times, Helvetica (\ss) and Courier (\tt) from the URW Nimbus collection: \usetypescript[berry][ec] % or [8r] \setupbodyfont[pos] or \usetypescript[berry][ec] % or [8r] \usetypescript[postscript][ec] \setupbodyfont[postscript] * * * That's all I can find. type-exa.tex contains Lucida typeface definitions, but the corresponding tfm's don't exist on TeXLive. Is there some setting to make these work? Similarly, type-enc.tex contains many font synonyms, but the tfm's do not exist and there are no typeface definitions for them. I'm not on the pdftex list, but I was just looking through their archives and came across this document on the PDF 1.5 spec: http://partners.adobe.com/asn/acrobat/docs/filefmtspecs/ PDFReference15draft.pdf The most notable point of interest to me is on the extensions to the tagged PDF spec (particularly starting on 10.7.4). PDF will now support structured markup for pretty much all of the common structures in ConTeXt, even citations! Any chance we'll finally see pdftex (and later ConTeXt) support this Hans? Bruce

selecting encoding for Unicode

Hi! I have problem in displaying characters which are not in default ConTeXt encoding, eg. amacron, Amacron, Imacron, imacron .. My input is utf-8 and converted to ConTeXt with dbcontext package. In ConTeXt file I have: \chardef\utfunihashmode=1 and \enableregime[utf] and everything is fine, except that I don't know how to switch encoding to Unicode, so that the characters which are defined in e.g. \unic-001.tex can be displayed. I have tried with \useencoding [uc] but it doesn't work. However, when I put {\amacron} it is properly displayed - I conclude that ConTeXt understands the glyph name, but when it has to decode the same character as utf-8, it doesn't recognize it. Any hint? Using \cal, \frak, \goth in math mode

In ConTeXt, \cal, \frak and \goth (etc) are considered "text only" commands. To use them in math mode one has to use \gothing, \fraktur, \calligraphic etc, which make a temporary switch to text mode. This is contrary to the LaTeX expectations, where $\cal ABC$ makes all three letters calligraphic. How could such a thing be achieved in ConTeXt? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

Toggle fields

Dear ConTeXt users, In experimenting with (JavaScript) fields I tried the example on p. 11 in the up-to-date 1998/1 publication. I placed the check field not in the margin, but in the running text and discovered that \goto{Help}[JS(Toggle_Hide{Help})] does work if it is placed after \fitfield[Help], but that it does not work if it is placed before \fitfield[Help]. For the commands \goto{Hide Help}[HideField{Help}] and \goto{Show Help}[ShowField{Help}] their position relative to \fitfield[Help] does not matter. Would it be possible to make a command ToggleField, analagous to HideField and ShowField, whose position relative to \fitfield[Help} is not important? ligatures?

TeXnicians, Once again, I'll stick my neck out showing my pure TeX ignorance. Are there ConTeXt commands for adding ligatures to the usual set (ff, fi, etc.)? Where in the chain are these characters (f + i) grouped and associated with the 'fi' character to be output? Run ConTeXt from TexLive 7 CDROM and WinShell

Thank you to Maarten Sneep and Severin Obertuefer for help with my "Newbie cant get \externalfigure to work" It seems likely that problem arose because of some coding errors and also because I am using an old (1999) version of ConTeXt (part of 4TeX5.0 (NL Tug)). So I am trying to upgrade. I am now trying to run ConTeXt from TexLive 7 CDROM, TexLive says ... "Select a Tex-oriented editor" I chose WinShell To run Context, I made a WinShell User Defined Tool, as follows. In Options => General => Userdefined I did ... exefile = pdfetex ... cmd line = &cont-en When I run that tool I get One or more errors occurred! Please check the options! Now I am stuck again Your suggestions gratefully received Richard Hardwick

some questions on fonts

Dear ConTeXticians, I'm learning to use ConTeXt and the main problems I have with ConTeXt are related to fonts. I need to use utf-8 for my documents, since it is the proper way to handle polytonic Greek, Spanish and German in a single document without having to use strange input methods. I was told that it is possible to use utf-8 in ConTeXt (although Greek isn't defined for utf-8 yet), but I don't know how to enable this feature. Which command can I use utf-8 in my documents? (I know \enableregime, but it doesn't work with option unicode). Another problem is the fontencoding: I'd like to use the cm-super fonts, but if I try to use \setupencoding[default=ec] I get a recursive error with some documents (but this is probably due to the wrong document syntax) or the document fonts are the standard cm fonts in OT1 encoding, what is probably related to the last problem. I cannot invoke other fonts than \setupbodyfont[ber,pos]. I use the MikTeX total distribution and with pdfLaTeX all installed fonts work fine. With ConTeXt if I use \setupbodyfont[palatino], either I get an error from maketfm that doesn't know how to make ec-uplr8a or in other documents the variant palatino for bodyfont seems to be unknown. I'm extremely confused about how ConTeXt works with the installed fonts (probably I don't have the required knowledge to understand it) and actually I don't know how LaTeX mangages the available fonts, but it works. The above question is not how to install new fonts or even how ConTeXt manages fonts. The only thing I'd appreciate to know is the most simple procedure to invoke each installed font on my TeX distribution within ConTeXt. Many thanks for your help, Pablo

Magazine: OpenType Pro fonts in ConTeXt

Hi ConTeXters. I've finally documented some font support macros and typescripts that I've been working on. I collected the ideas in a MyWay magazine: <http://homepage.mac.com/atl/tex/OpenType.pdf> (782 Kb) The companion files are on the site as well: <http://homepage.mac.com/atl/tex/OpenType.zip> (25 Kb) A web page to hold all this stuff is forthcoming. The best way to describe what it does is with the abstract: This is a summary of issues encountered and solutions implemented in order to support some advanced OpenType features in ConTeXt. This article describes an accompanying package that addresses installation (using TeXFont), accommodating extended opticals families, and some ``pro'' font features. The extended character set afforded by pro fonts enables support for comprehensive small caps, old-style figures, and the use of greek glyphs to give workable math fonts. Although the typescripts and commands are described together, certain features (like variant encodings for TeXFont and the idiosyncratic method for creating new math fonts) can be used independently of the other features described. Thanks to all. That gives me some leads. I wanted to try something using your advice but in the mean-time decided to typeset my document in lucida instead of comp modern. My installation just won't do it. So I am struggling on this and leave the graphs to later. I stand corrected, the idea is to have a basket with shapes and another basket with arrows. Pick on the fly the necessary pieces and assemble them in a chart, place the chart in a figure environment and put a numberd legenda underneath of it. -- Hm, I would not know how to achieve this without tweaking the sources... Dear ConTeXt users, I just started to try \fillinfield as described in the up-todate manual 1998/1. For some names it worked properly, but for my own name it didn't. Also, I've noticed odd kerning with apostrophes, in both Jenson Pro and, it seems, in your sample on page 1 where the word "Adobe's" looks quite odd. Any ideas what's going on with that? A mistake in the metric files? And how would this be corrected; go into the kerning pairs and adjust them for this glyph? Bruce

No virtuous deed goes unpunished. I have been using old-fashioned \font commands with Context because the other was just too confusing. But I htought it was time to ger religion. So I copied the following pretty much verbatim from a manual: \definefontsynonym [Serif] [Palatino] \definefontsynonym [Palatino][uplr8r] [encoding=default] \definebodyfont [14.4pt] [rm] [tf=Serif sa 1] ... \switchtobodyfont[14.4pt] ...and I get Computer Modern according to Acrobat Reader. ---------------------------------- But when I use this: \font\rm=uplr8r at 12pt \font\bf=uplb8r at 14.4pt \font\bs=uplbo8r at 17.3pt \rm I get the font I want where I want it. --------------------------------------------------- So what am I messing up in the first example? Hello, I compile a document with texexec --pdf --mode=<somemode> ..., and I want to access whatever is specified for <somemode> in the document as literal text. So if I run texexec --pdf --mode=screen ... I want something like "this document was processed in screen mode" to show up in the text. What I tried is the definition you see at the top for the boxes. I thought about trying to generate massive metafun macros. But I want the itemised text to be text and not a graph. Bottom line: is it possible? realistic? I have been using MS Word so far to do that sort of thing. It has been quite tedious to reflect any change in the box structure: 10 charts means 10 charts to re-edit. As a bonus question that should be easier. Is it possible to draw other sorts of arrows: i would like to draw straght line arrows that could follow a diagonal (say go north-east instead of east first then north), or circular arrows like: % % ----- % ! ! % ! !<-- % ----- \ % \ % | % ----- / % ! ! / % ! I was concerned that I may have over time messed with my system too much. So I reloaded the the 2002 version of the TeXLive CDROM. Things worked more or less. Then I was concerned that I should upgrade to the latest Context. So I downloaded cont-en.zip from the site and unzipped it in my /usr/TeX directory. This is a Linux system. Now if I sign on as an ordinary user when I run texexec I get a "file access denied" message. NO clue as to which file is denying access.
